BIDDEFORD —After 15 years in business downtown, Bebe’s Burritos and Cantina is closing.

Saturday will be the last day for the Mexican restaurant and bar at its 140 Main St. location, Shilyn Moulton, who manages Bebe’s along with her sister Kieyana Francis, said Tuesday. Moulton and Francis’ mother owns the business.

Moulton said she was notified last Friday that the restaurant was losing its lease. On Monday, building owner Steve Ebling said he was not at liberty to discuss the situation at this time, nor any future plans he has for the space.

“This isn’t easy for any of us,” said Moulton.

In more than a decade of business downtown, she said Bebe’s has built an extensive foundation of regulars, such as local school teachers who frequent the bar to wind down on Fridays.

And those customers have been seeing the news on social media, said Moulton. “They’re as devastated as we are,” she said.

Moulton said local youth sports teams have for the last several months been selling pamphlets that include coupons for Bebe’s, and she would like as many people as possible to come in and use them in the next few days.

Although it has been hard news to handle, Moulton said her family hopes to reopen Bebe’s in the near future.

“We are looking to relocate,” she said. “We are hoping we can find a place not too far from here to reopen.”

Moulton said she’s expecting a large turnout at Bebe’s Saturday night as part of a send-off party.

“It’s going to be pretty emotional for all of us,” she said of the event.

Restaurants are a frequent cover for housing illegals.

this from a totally unrelated case, other than it's Mexican restuarants getting busted for running illegals.

Looks like the cartel paid off a juror to fuck up the trial.

Brothers who own Mexican restaurants in Maine plead guilty to hiring illegal aliens, lying to federal investigators

by Nok-Noi RickerJune 16, 2014

PORTLAND, Maine — The owners of three Mexican restaurants who were convicted of hiring illegal aliens in March 2013, but later granted a new trial after a jury member called them a derogatory name, returned to federal court Monday to enter guilty pleas.

Brothers Guillermo Fuentes, 38, of Westbrook and Hector Fuentes, 40, of Waterville entered guilty pleas in U.S. District Court admitting to knowingly hiring 10 or more undocumented aliens in a 12-month period and making false statements to federal agents, U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II said in a Monday statement.

The Fuentes brothers, who are lawful permanent residents of the U.S., own the Fajita Grill Mexican Restaurant in Westbrook, the Cancun Mexican Restaurant in Waterville and the Cancun Mexican Restaurant II in Biddeford. The restaurants remain open.

The brothers came to the attention of authorities in April 2008 after Westbrook police stopped several Hispanic men who worked at the Fajita Grill but had no U.S. identification documents, according to court documents.

At least four illegal workers cooperated with authorities over the past several years and have continued to live and work in Maine.

The brothers were convicted March 18, 2013, after a seven-day trial on charges of conspiracy to harbor undocumented aliens for profit, harboring undocumented aliens for profit, and aiding and abetting document fraud.

A juror went to the Eagles Club in South Portland during the trial and told another person that the defendants: “Are all guilty wetbacks anyway,” according to the 23-page decision U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby issued in August when granting the new trial.

The brothers’ new trial was originally scheduled for October.

Monday’s guilty pleas are related to the Fuentes’ hiring practices at Fajita Grill, the U.S. attorney’s statement says.

The false statement charge arises out of post-arrest statements the defendants made to law enforcement officers in September 2011 regarding the hiring practices at the Fajita Grill and at the Cancun Mexican Restaurant in Waterville. The defendants falsely stated, among other things, that federally required documentation regarding the immigration status of employees had been properly completed, Delahanty said.

The defendants face up to five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. A sentencing date has not been set.

The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General.

Are you hungry for that South of the Border flavor? Come to downtown Biddeford and visit Bebe’s Burritos and Cantina.

Bebe’s has been open for seven years and is located at 140 Main St. It’s open for lunch and dinner and offers a wide range of Mexican dishes. The entrees range from the traditional to the specialty, vegetarian and vegan. The restaurant seats 100, has a full-service bar and offers live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.I met with Bebe’s owner Pamela Francisto talk about her business and the downtown.

How did you get into the restaurant business?

I used to do office work and I was between jobs. I saw there was a restaurant for sale and just decided to check it out. The restaurant was already existing and I liked what I saw. I had the management skills, studied up on restaurants and thought “I can do this.” I just decided to do it.

Bebe’s Burritos and Cantina on Main Street in downtown Biddeford opened several years ago. The decor is authentic and festive. (Brian Keely photo) Bebe’s Burritos and Cantina on Main Street in downtown Biddeford opened several years ago. The decor is authentic and festive. (Brian Keely photo) Do you cook?

My first job was a cook when I was 14. I can cook when needed to cover someone, but I have a chef, Emily Carnes, and a very capable staff to do the cooking.

Why is a Mexican restaurant good for downtown Biddeford?

Mexican food is good wholesome, healthy food. It’s fresh all the time and is full of vegetables. Who doesn’t need that?

What is your favorite Mexican dish?

Wow, that’s a hard choice. I like the chicken enchiladas and the chicken fajitas a lot. The enchiladas have a cinnamon mole sauce that is unbelievable. I just really like chicken.

Is there anything that people are surprised to find out about you?

They are surprised to find out that I am actually Native American. I am Passamaquaddy Indian. If anyone knows Maine well, they know that tribe has been here forever.

Are there any similarities between Native Americans and Mexicans?

Yes, they are both very family oriented. They both have similar cultures, values and ways of life. Some of the food is similar too. Both love to cook with beans and garden-fresh vegetables. Native Americans make a lot of fry breads, which are very thin and fried on a griddle. Just like the Mexicans make tortillas.

Anything surprising about your restaurant?

People are surprised to find there is a great Mexican restaurant in downtown Biddeford. When people come in for the first time, they always say that it feels and looks like they just walked into Mexico.

Are there any myths about Mexican food?

People assume Mexican food is spicy when it’s actually not. Mexican food is tasty and flavorful but not hot unless you choose to add hot sauce.

What is your favorite aspect of downtown Biddeford?

I really like the buildings. I love brick and wood. I like the people here too. The people are all very friendly and care about their community. It was one of the deciding factors when I chose to buy the restaurant.
