The Kremlin on Friday said Russia will skip the annual global Earth Hour event this weekend after the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was labelled a “foreign agent” by Moscow.

 

The move comes as Russia cracks down on most foreign-linked groups since its offensive in Ukraine, including climate-orientated organisations.

 

Earth Hour, which WWF organises, encourages people worldwide to turn their lights off for 60 minutes to raise awareness about environmental issues.

 

Russia has taken part in the event, which is scheduled this Saturday, for 14 years.

 

“This year, we took the decision to hold back from this event,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Friday.

 

''“It is because they have become a foreign agent.”''

 

The Russian justice ministry included the WWF’s Russia branch on its list of foreign agents earlier this month.

 

The global environmental advocacy group has worked in Russia since 1994. The foreign agent label has Soviet-era connotations and has been widely used against Kremlin critics.

 

Before the Kremlin’s announcement, WWF in Russia said on its website that Earth Hour will only take place online this year because of its new status.

 

The organisation said it will legally challenge the foreign agent decision.

 

But it also urged caution asking supporters not to use the WWF symbol “as we are worried about our partners and colleagues.”

 

More than 60 environmental groups have signed a petition to President Vladimir Putin this month, calling on him to reverse the WWF foreign agent designation.

 

They said the organisation is “apolitical” and has “successfully” worked on its mission to protect the Russian environment since the 1990s.

 

“We are convinced that this decision will have a negative impact on the preservation of the unique nature of our country and believe it should be reversed,” they added.

 

Putin was for much of his long presidency a climate-change sceptic but in recent years has made a U-turn on the issues, calling on Russia to adapt to a changing climate.

 

Russia has been badly affected by climate change, with permafrost in its northern regions warming and Siberia’s forests hit by massive fires every summer.

Arizona Supreme Court Will Allow Kari Lake to Expose Mail-In Ballot Signature Scam

 

The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that Kari Lake, who lost the race to become governor and filed a lawsuit alleging election fraud, will be allowed to expose the Signature Verification security system on mail-in ballots, which she says is corrupt. Kari Lake said that Adrian Fontes, the current Secretary of State of Arizona who was the Maricopa County Recorder during the contested 2020 election, is a Mexican drug cartel attorney and a fraud. Lake may face criminal charges over allegations that she shared voter signatures on social media.

Caroline Wren, who ran Kari Lake’s campaign for Arizona governor, said that three whistleblowers involved in the Signature Verification department in Maricopa County said that tens of thousands of signatures, perhaps as many as 130,000 were rejected, but someone counted the rejected ballots anyway.

A little less than a year after the first QAnon post, which has since led hundreds of thousands of news junkies down a conspiracy rabbit hole, news correspondent Jack Posobiec from One America News Network spoke with one of the co-originators of the “Q” persona who runs a group of individuals posing as a high-level government intelligence officer. On an anonymous “free speech” platform called 8Chan, they leave thousands of riddles, “clues,” odd questions, and cryptic lines as bread crumbs for their followers to help them in their search for truth.

Many major media outlets have overviewed the nest of conspiracy theories nurtured within Q followers. While many have speculated about who is behind Q and how it came to exist, thanks to Posobiec’s extensive research and the confession of a co-creator who goes by the pseudonym “Microchip,” we now know, with a high degree of certainty, the real origin story of QAnon.

Microchip’s story is believable, and he doesn’t appear to have a good motivation for taking credit for QAnon if he didn’t actually help create it. Additionally, Posobiec indicated he had long suspected it was him before Microchip confessed, after following the suspected Q creators closely for many months.

Retired FBI Agent Exposes Planned Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP)/ UFO Invasion

 

John DeSouza, a 25 year veteran of the FBI, exposed a planned UFO invasion that the Pentagon is currently promoting. Border Patrol officials are releasing new details on what they are calling an "elaborate human smuggling scheme."

 

That's after 17 immigrants who were described as "undocumented non-citizens" in a statement released by Border Patrol, were arrested Tuesday night. Lisbon police were working to solve a hit-and-run in February, when the investigation led them to the discovery of the immigrants at the home, officials said.

 

Border Patrol agents say they later learned the immigrants were found to befrom Nicaragua and Guatemala.

 

“We are seeing a sharp increase in the flow of illegal labor in and out of Maine,” said William Maddocks, chief patrol agent of the Houlton Sector. “Border Patrol will continue to protect our local communities here in Maine and the U.S. as a whole by ensuring those illegally entering the country are apprehended.”

 

Agents reportthe immigrants were employed by an unnamed Massachusetts-based company, which also rented the home at 93 Main Street for them.

 

Border Patrol officials say housing 17 immigrants in Lisban Falls home is ’unsafe and degrading’ after arrest Tuesday.

 

Photos provided by Border Patrol show several airbeds and mattresses side-by-side on the home's floor, with only thin blankets covering most of them.

 

"Housing 17 people in one house is unsafe and degrading," said Maddocks.

 

Twin-sized mattresses were found side-by-side in Lisbon Falls home during the arrest of 17 immigrants Tuesday.

 

"The exploitation of the undocumented population will continue as long as there is no consequence. We will do all we can to remove the incentives that drive such exploitation," he continued.

 

More beds with thin blankets found shoved together at Lisbon Falls home, where 17 immigrants were arrested Tuesday.

 

After being brought to a detainment center in Rangeley,two of the immigrants were found to have re-entered the country after being previously removed, officials said. Re-entering is a felony crime punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine.

 

Four of the immigrants were found to be already in removal proceedings, having allegedly entered the U.S. illegally by crossing the southwest border.

 

The other 11 immigrants were entered into removal proceedings by Border Patrol agents, who say the incident is still under investigation.

Justice for Manchin: Senate Republicans closing in on 2024 recruit

 

Elated Senate Republicans believe they are on the cusp of landing their highest-profile recruit of the 2024 campaign: West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice.

 

Justice, a Democrat-turned-Republican with sky-high approval ratings, is increasingly expected to launch a bid for Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) seat after consulting with top party officials in Washington this month, according to a half-dozen GOP senators and aides. A Justice candidacy would notch two big wins for Republicans, breaking their losing streak in recruiting popular governors and reshaping next year’s battleground map.

 

Republicans privately predict Justice may wait to enter the race until at least next month in order to have a full fundraising quarter. And though the timing is in flux, the GOP would be gobsmacked at this point if he did not run.

 

He is dropping hints everywhere. He’s put his coal business up for sale to pay off debts and met with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Steve Daines (R-Mont.) last week. He finished up his state’s legislative session earlier this month, pushing through a tax cut after Manchin helped direct federal funds to the state. And he’s been texting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), according to two people familiar with Justice's interactions.

 

“The governor has a good political sense. So I am assuming that he's going to get in,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.). “It would change things. He has a huge approval rating, he just passed the biggest tax cut in state history. He’s got a lot of good things to talk about.”

 

But Justice’s plans, not to mention Republicans’ confidence that he puts them in striking distance of picking up a Democrat-held seat, doesn’t faze the incumbent one “iota.” Manchin reiterated in an interview that he won’t decide whether he’ll run until the end of the year, describing himself as content to watch his rivals spar from afar — for a few months, at least.

 

“God bless them, it’ll be entertaining to watch their primary. That’s the greatest thing,” Manchin said.

 

The Senate GOP whiffed repeatedly during the 2022 midterms on trying to recruit popular governors like Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, Doug Ducey of Arizona and Larry Hogan of Maryland. Already this year, though, former Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts has joined the Senate via appointment. Justice is different: The party’s spent months courting him, and Republicans believe if he runs they will get much closer to picking up a Democrat-held seat.

 

In conversations with D.C. Republicans, Justice has discussed the pros and cons of making the jump from governor to senator, according to one of the people familiar with his interactions. Yet Justice has made no final public decision. And until he files his candidate paperwork, there’s still a chance he backs out.

 

Should he jump in, he'd immediately help Republicans solidify their path to a majority which runs through Ohio, Montana and West Virginia. They need to net two seats to take back the majority, regardless of the outcome of the presidential race.

 

Still, a Justice win isn’t straightforward. He’ll have to navigate Republican primary waters in his state that are already choppy thanks to Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.), whom former President Donald Trump and the Club for Growth backed in a hotly contested House GOP primary last year.

Donald Trump is about to be a loser, several of his attorneys say.

 

Since last month, according to two sources familiar with the matter, some of Trump’s lawyers have told him that if he is criminally charged in New York City, he should be prepared to lose. There’s a widespread belief in Trumplandia — including within the ex-president’s legal orbit — that it would be difficult for the former president to get an impartial jury in the Democratic stronghold of Manhattan. Instead, these Trump attorneys are telling him his best chance is to win on appeal.

 

“The [former] president is more confident in his chances [than others are], but when some of us have brought this [idea of counting on an appeal] up to him … it seemed like he believed we had a good point,” one of the sources says.

 

A Trump spokesperson and a Trump attorney did not immediately provide comment for this story.

 

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg empaneled a grand jury to investigate whether the former president broke New York state business records laws by reimbursing his former personal attorney and fixer, Michael Cohen, for a hush money payment to cover up an alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels.

 

The Trump grand jury had been scheduled to meet again on Wednesday to hear from an unnamed witness, but the district attorney’s office abruptly canceled the meeting, according to CNN, leaving the timing of a potential indictment uncertain. (Days ago, Trump claimed on his social media network that he expected to be arrested on Tuesday, March 21.)

Relativity Space launches world's first 3D-printed rocket on historic test flight, but fails to reach orbit

The world's first 3D-printed rocket didn't earn its wings during its launch debut late Wednesday (March 22), but it did notch some important milestones.

 

The Relativity Space rocket, called Terran 1, lifted off from Launch Complex 16 at Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 8:25 p.m. EST (0025 GMT on March 23), kicking off a test flight called "Good Luck, Have Fun" (GLHF).

 

Terran 1 performed well initially. For example, it survived Max-Q — the part of flight during which the structural loads are highest on a rocket — and its first and second stages separated successfully. But something went wrong shortly thereafter, at around three minutes into the flight, when the rocket failed to reach orbit.

 

"No one's ever attempted to launch a 3D-printed rocket into orbit, and, while we didn't make it all the way today, we gathered enough data to show that flying 3D-printed rockets is viable," Relativity Space's Arwa Tizani Kelly said during the company's launch webcast on Wednesday night.

 

"We just completed a major step in proving to the world that 3D-printed rockets are structurally viable," she added.

 

Indeed, Relativity Space is likely celebrating at the moment. Rockets rarely perform perfectly on their first-ever liftoff; Japan's new H3 rocket failed during its debut flight earlier this month, for example. And Relativity Space co-founder Tim Ellis said before launch that getting through Max-Q was "the key inflection" for the GLHF mission.

 

"This will essentially prove the viability of using additive manufacturing tech to produce products that fly. We already effectively did this in ground testing, pushing and prodding well above this max stress successfully on both stages in a simulated worst-case flying environment, and have tested over 12,000 seconds of engine hot fires across dozens of articles — so I think we've done this already, but in flight of course is the most visceral proof," Ellis tweeted on March 7.

LISBON, Maine – Border Patrol Agents working in Lisbon, Maine, identified a location being used to house undocumented non-citizens and removed 17 migrants from the grounds.

 

The subjects, from Nicaragua and Guatemala, add to a growing trend of undocumented non-citizens transiting in and out of the State of Maine.

 

On March 21, 2023, agents assigned to the Rangeley Border Patrol Station conducted a follow-up investigation on information provided by the Lisbon Police Department relating to a hit-and-run accident. The investigation led to a house in Lisbon, Maine, where 17 undocumented non-citizens were discovered.

 

“U.S. Border Patrol will continue to protect our local communities here in Maine and the U.S. as a whole by ensuring those illegally entering the country are apprehended,” said William J. Maddocks, Chief Patrol Agent of the Houlton Sector. “No one is made safer by allowing criminal activity to go unchecked. Immigration law violations are no different, and criminal activity without consequence is not in our community or national interests,” he added.

 

The agents determined the undocumented non-citizens worked for a Massachusetts-based company. The company rented the house to provide a residence for the migrants. “We are seeing a sharp increase in the flow of illegal labor in and out of Maine,” said Maddocks. “Housing 17 people in one house is unsafe and degrading. The exploitation of the undocumented population will continue as long as there is no consequence. We will do all we can to remove the incentives that drive such exploitation, including the continued issuance of civil penalties, fines, and seeking federal criminal prosecution through the U.S. Attorney’s office for every criminal law violation we encounter.”

 

The undocumented non-citizens were transported to Rangeley, Maine, for processing. During processing, two of the subjects, from Guatemala, were found to have re-entered the United States after being previously removed. Reentering the United States after removal is a felony crime, punishable by a fine under Title 18 and not more than two years of prison.

 

Four undocumented non-citizens were found to have entered the United States illegally along the southwest border and were already in removal proceedings. Those subjects were released to await immigration proceedings.

 

The other subjects - from Nicaragua and Guatemala - were entered into removal proceedings under Title 8.

 

This incident remains under investigation.

Appeals court blocks COVID-19 vaccine mandate for US government workers

 

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — President Joe Biden’s order that federal employees get vaccinated against COVID-19 was blocked Thursday by a federal appeals court.

 

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans rejected arguments that Biden, as the nation’s chief executive, has the same authority as the CEO of a private corporation to require that employees be vaccinated.

 

The ruling from the full appeals court, 16 full-time judges at the time the case was argued, reversed an earlier ruling by a three-judge 5th Circuit panel that had upheld the vaccination requirement. Judge Andrew Oldham, nominated to the court by then-President Donald Trump, wrote the opinion for a 10-member majority.

 

The ruling maintains the status quo for federal employee vaccines. It upholds a preliminary injunction blocking the mandate issued by a federal judge in January 2022. At that point, the administration said nearly 98% of covered employees had been vaccinated.

Maine and federal law enforcement officials were either unable or were unwilling to reveal the identities and current whereabouts this week of seven men arrested at a Rockland Home Depot on Saturday, Feb. 18.

 

“The Asset Protect Office of Home Depotwas watching [the seven men] via remote camera and management from Home Depot wanted the people trespassed from the store,” a the Rockland Police Department said in a Feb. 18 press release.

 

“Rockland Police have received information in the past regarding a particular group or groups of individuals, often using white vans, that have allegedlystolen tens of thousands of dollars, or more,of materials and equipment throughout the state, particularly from Home Depot,” the release said.

 

Two Rockland PD officers arrived and detained the seven men, but when it was discovered that they spoke poor English and had no U.S. identification, they called in an unnamed U.S. Border Patrol agent.

 

“Based on the limited information the Rockland Police Officers had on scene and complexity of the investigation, all the persons involved were trespassed with the criminal investigation ongoing,” the release stated. “Rockland Police and members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office assisted Border Patrol in detaining and transporting all the individuals to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.”

 

From there, the seven unknown men were handed off to U.S. Border Patrol and transported to an unknown location.

 

The Maine Wire contacted the Rockland Police Department, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) multiple times by email and phone to learn more about the case, the individuals involved, and their current whereabouts.

 

But none of the law enforcement agencies would — or could — provide more than basic information about what happened to the seven men, who they are, or where they are being kept.

 

None of the men have been charged with a crime in Maine, but they have been held in law enforcement custody since Saturday.

 

On Tuesday, Ryan Brissette, public affairs officer with the Department of Homeland Security office in Boston, responded to an inquiry seeking information about the arrestees.

 

“At this time, all inquiries should be forwarded to Rockland PD,” Brissette said.

 

However, the Rockland Police Department said it did not book or process the individuals but only transported them to a Knox County facility.

 

Rockland Police Chief Timothy Carroll said the department had no records whatsoever regarding the identities of the individuals it delivered to federal custody.

 

The Rockland PD press release said “criminal charges are pending” against the seven individuals. Asked how charges could be pending without any public records related to the subjects, Carroll said the release was incorrect and should have simply said the investigation is ongoing.

 

A Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy said the Sheriff’s office did not book or process the individuals but just held them for U.S. Border Patrol officials to pick up. Like Rockland PD, the Knox Sheriff’s Department said it had no records other than the initial complaint from Home Depot concerning the subjects.

 

Neither Maine agency could provide any information or public records about the individuals they transferred into federal custody.

The spokespersons for the Maine State Police and the Maine Attorney General’s office only learned about the Rockland operation involving seven alleged foreign nationals when the Maine Wire inquired about the case.

 

Typically, when individuals are arrested in Maine records concerning their arrest, such as biographical information, mug shots, and related police reports, are available to the media and public within 24-48 hours. However, in this case, local and county law enforcement officials don’t have any public records concerning the subjects as they were never booked.

 

Under federal immigration law, if federal agents detain a foreign national present in the U.S. illegally within 100 miles of the border and determine that the individual has been present in the U.S. less than two years, that individual can be removed from the U.S. without a hearing.

 

U.S. Border Patrol officials, including from New England and from a Department of Homeland Security Office in Chicago, declined to share any further information with The Maine Wire about the seven individuals in question, despite several requests for public records.

 

“We have nothing further at this time,” wrote Steven Bansbach, a public affairs official with the U.S. CBP’s Chicago Field Office.

 

A DHS official eventually instructed the Maine Wire to file a federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with CBP in order to obtain public records related to the case. The Maine Wire filed that request, but CBP determined that the request should have been sent to ICE.

 

The Maine Wire filed a similar request with ICE seeking information about the identities of the seven men; however, ICE responded Friday that it would not process the request because the Maine Wire did not have the permission of the seven unknown men, whose permission cannot be sought because the federal government won’t — or can’t — say who they are.

 

At present, next to nothing is known about the individuals or the operation that led to their arrest, apart from a narrative published to Facebook by the Rockland Police Department.

 

The individuals have not been charged with a crime by either the Rockland Police Department of the Knox County Sheriff’s office. A Rockland PD spokesperson confirmed that the individuals were not read their Miranda Rights.

 

It is currently unknown whether the individuals have been charged with a federal crime, whether they were or are present in the country illegally, what language they spoke, what their names were, what their country of origin(s) is/are, what agency is holding them now, and where they are being held.

 

Here’s what we do know from the Rockland PD’s Facebook post:

 

The individuals were operating two large white vans and were suspected of having participated in prior thefts. A Knox County source said residents in the area had previously been warned to be on the lookout for a van matching that description that had been associated with the theft of tools and other property from private residences.

 

Home Depot’s asset protection unit called Knox County dispatch Saturday morning and two Rockland police officers, Sergeant Andrew Redden and Officer Logan Finnegan, located the seven individuals. (Chief Carroll declined to make Redden and Finnegan available for interviews this week.)

 

Carroll, the Rockland Police Chief, said the white van that was present when his officers arrived at Home Depot is not in Rockland PD custody.

 

“I believe it was released to another person,” he said.

 

The locations of the second white van and its operators are unknown.

 

There is no information available concerning the whereabouts of the seven individuals after USCBP picked them up later on Saturday, Feb. 18, and the Rockland PD has not published an update; however the Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy indicated that the men were taken to Calais, where CBP operates three border crossing stations.

 

Law enforcement sources who spoke with the Maine Wire on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the press said that US Border Patrol has, in recent months, begun operating further from the Canadian border and deeper into the interior of Maine.

 

One source said US Border Patrol’s area of operations has grown to assist local law enforcement in response to an increasing number of crimes suspected to have involved foreign nationals present in the U.S. illegally.

UPDATE: On Friday, Feb. 24, after this story was published, a CBP spokesperson forwarded a statement. The identities of the seven men remain unknown. The circumstances and identity of the seventh man also remain unknown. The Maine Wire will continue to investigate. Here is the statement:

 

On Saturday, February 15, (sic) 2023, agents from the US Border Patrol’s Houlton Sector responded to a request for assistance call from the Rockland Police Department as they investigated an incident at the Home Depot in Rockland, Maine. While assisting with the criminal investigation, the responding agent determined that six of the subjects being questioned by the Rockland Police Department were foreign nationals that did not have valid immigration status or documentation to be in the United States.

 

It was determined that five of the subjects had entered the United States illegally, and were therefore in violation of 8 USC 1325, Improper Entry. First time offenders of 8 USC 1325 may be fined and face misdemeanor charges. Subsequent violations may also face additional fines as well as felony charges.

 

The sixth subject was found to have reentered the United States illegally after having previously been removed, and was therefore in violation of 8 USC 1326, Reentry after Removal. Violating 8 USC 1326 is a felony offense.

 

The Border Patrol evaluates each offender regarding their immigration status, and other aggravating circumstances such as recidivism and criminal history to determine the legal pathway each subject will be processed under. Those pathways may include administrative actions such as issuance of fines, asset forfeiture and removal from the U.S. Criminal violations may also result in criminal prosecution.

 

In this case, all subjects have been processed for administrative removal from the United States. In addition to being processed for removal, some have been fined $5,000 each for entering the United States illegally.

 

Any questions regarding the initial criminal investigation should be directed to the Rockland Police Department.

Nuclear warning issued to Ukraine over Crimea

Any Ukrainian attempt to capture Crimea could bemet with a nuclear responseby Moscow, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned. He insisted, however, that Kiev’s claims that it could seize the peninsular are nothing more thanhollow threats.

 

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Medvedev dismissed the likelihood that Ukraine would carry out an attack on Crimea, asserting that “this is propaganda and should be treated that way, during war it always exists.”

 

Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, added that “if we talk about some sort of serious offensive that is associated with an attempt to retake Crimea, it is quite obvious that this is the basis for the use ofall means of protection, including those provided for by the fundamentals of the Doctrine of Nuclear Deterrence, when the use of any types of weapons against Russia threatens the existence of the state itself.”

 

Crimea became part of Russia in 2014 after the local population voted overwhelmingly in favor of the move following a Western-backed coup in Kiev. Ukraine and its Western supporters have refused to recognize the step, and Kiev has repeatedly vowed to retake the peninsula by force.

 

Medvedev stressed that any attempt to break off part of Russia would be considered as athreat to the nation’s existence. “Therefore, draw your own conclusions. There are absolutely grounds for using any weapon here. Absolutely any kind. And I hope our ‘friends’ across the ocean understand this,” the former president said.

 

He also stressed that the prospect of a nuclear conflict has not faded, but insteadcontinues to grow.Every day that Western weapons are delivered to Ukraine, the closer the world moves towards a “nuclear apocalypse,”Medvedev cautioned, adding that “it doesn’t mean that this will happen, butthe horsemen of the apocalypse continue to move.”

 

The former Russian leader also claimed that without military aid and “direct cash injections”from NATO, the “Kiev regime would not have survived even a week” against Russian forces. The greater the supply of weapons, the more difficult the situation becomes, Medvedev added.

 

He stated that it is “obvious” Kiev is preparing some sort of new offensive, although Russia’s General Staff is making its own assessments and planning a response. Medvedev insisted that Russia would prefer to resolve all issues peacefully, but that the West seems uninterested in such a resolution.

Conservative journalist Jack Posobiec was briefly surrounded by Swiss police Monday at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

 

Various videos were posted to social media that showed Swiss police encircling Posobiec as he ate with several other individuals at the Migros Restaurant, as seen in videos shared both by Posobiec and Benny Johnson. “Excuse me, can I ask you why you’re detaining this journalist?” reporter Savanah Hernandez asked one of the officers surrounding Posobiec. The officer immediately told her to put her phone away, and said, “I don’t answer your questions.” What appeared to be a spokeswoman for the Swiss police said, “we’re just making a normal police control, because you know, it’s WEF, everything’s very sensitive.” Nearly 2,500 global business, political, and social leaders are expected to attend the conference in the Swiss Alps, CNBC reported. “Is there a reason he is specifically was targeted?” Hernandez asks the supposed spokeswoman. “There is a reason, because we have to have a reason to control a person,” the spokeswoman responded, but refused to provide Hernandez with the reason. “I don’t have to tell you that. Why are you asking me that?” the spokeswoman said. She then demanded that Hernandez delete the footage she captured of the interaction between Posobiec, his team and the Swiss police. Kiev labels Austrian bank ‘sponsor of war’

The move comes in response to Raiffeisen Bank's decision to maintain business operations in Russia

 

Ukraine’s National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) has included Austrian banking group Raiffeisen in its list of international sponsors of war.

 

According to an agency statement on Thursday, the designation is due to the continued operation of the European bank in Russia and to its official recognition (through its representative office) of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), which were recognized by Moscow as independent states in February 2022.

 

NACP expressed discontent with the fact that the Russian branch of Raiffeisen provides favorable credit terms to the Russian military, and that it also uses the wording ‘special military operation’ in its documents.

 

The Ukrainian agency has included in its notorious listGerman wholesaler Metro, French retailer Auchan, Italian cement company Buzzi Unicem, and others for the same reason.

 

Meanwhile, according to media reports, Raiffeisen has also come under pressure from the European Central Bank (ECB), which is urging the Austrian banking group to quit the Russian market. The ECB has been pressuring it to develop a plan for unwinding its business in the sanctioned country, with one of the options being a sale or closure of its Russian affiliate, Reuters reports.

 

Raiffeisen, which has been operating in Russia since 1996, plays a critical role in the country’s economy, providing a lifeline for euro payments to and from Russia. It’s one of only two foreign banks on the Russian Central Bank’s list of 13 systemically important credit institutions, the other being Italy’s UniCredit.

Russia warns of radioactive disaster in Ukraine

Depleted uranium shells promised to Kiev by the UK would “cause irreparable harm” to soldiers and civilians alike, Moscow says

 

The potential use of Western-supplied depleted uranium shells by Ukraine would have adevastating impacton the country’s economy and population, lasting for centuries to come, the Russian Defense Ministry warned on Friday.

 

Speaking at a briefing, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who is in charge of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Forces, issued a scathing criticism of the UK’s plans to support Kiev with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium.

 

He noted that such munitions have only ever been deployed in combat by NATO countries, most notably during the Iraq War, when the US used at least 300 tons of depleted uranium.

 

“As a result,the radiation situation in the [Iraqi] city of Fallujahwas much worse than in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the nuclear bombings by the United States,” Kirillov stated, recalling that Fallujah had been dubbed “the second Chernobyl,” while the local population suffered from askyrocketing number of cancer cases.

 

The West is well aware of the consequences of using such weapons, the general stressed. Even though it “will cause irreparable harm” to the health of Ukrainian troops and civilians, “NATO countries, in particular the UK, express a readiness to supply this type of weapon to the Kiev regime,” Kirillov stated.

 

He warned that the use of the munitions will contaminate farmland. “In addition to infecting its own population, this will cause tremendous economic damage to the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine… reducing any export of agricultural produce from Ukrainian territory for many decades, if not centuries to come,” the general said.

 

The UK’s plans to send depleted uranium shells to Ukraine for use with Challenger 2 battle tanks were first unveiled on Monday, prompting an outcry from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which called the move a sign of “absolute recklessness, irresponsibility and impunity” on the part of London and Washington.

 

While the US has said it does not plan to support Ukraine with such ammunition, it shrugged off Russian concerns over the matter, describing depleted uranium shells as “a commonplace type of munition” which has “been in use for decades.”

Ukrainian counter-offensive ‘will shock the world’ – US adviser

Kiev’s forces will be in better shape than they were a year ago, Dan Rice has predicted

 

The Ukrainian military is poised to unleash a massive offensive against Russian troops in the coming weeks, which will stun the global community, a US adviser to Kiev's top general claimed on Thursday.

 

Speaking in an interview with the Ukrainian daily New Voice, Dan Rice, an Iraq War veteran who now serves as an adviser to Valery Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, claimed Russia had encountered serious hurdles while trying to gain control of the key Donbass city of Artyomovsk, known in Ukraine as Bakhmut.

 

In recent weeks, Russian forces have captured several villages around the strategic logistical hub, with Evgeny Prigozhin, chief of the Wagner Private Military Company, claiming the group was in control of 70% of the city. Last week, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, described the Ukrainian troops’ situation on the ground as “very poor,” saying they were virtually encircled and suffering heavy losses.

 

While Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky himself has described the battle as “one of the hardest,” Rice played downthose difficulties, focusing instead on adverse weather conditions, and asserting that Moscow had chosen a “terrible time to attack.”

 

He stated that when the “right time” for Kiev’s offensive comes in the spring, “Ukraine will have a much stronger army, and much better provision than it had a year ago” when hostilities started.

 

“And you have to go on the offensive to win back positions. And I believe that this spring Ukraine will have a very powerful counteroffensive that will shock the world,”Rice insisted.

 

Last week Politico reported, citing sources, that the US expected Kiev to start its counterattack in May after receiving more Western weapons. The news outlet said that while Kiev had not made a final decision on its strategy, US officials believe thatUkrainian forces could push into Crimea either by crossing the Dnieper River– a scenario deemed unrealistic – or move from the north in a bid to cut off Russian troops on the peninsula.

 

When asked to comment on the report, Mikhail Podoliak, a senior aide to Zelensky,expressed frustrationthat such sensitive information was being disclosed, explaining that any counter-offensive “should be a surprise for the enemy”. (Right, sure. This announcement was worked out for weeks to see if anyone believes it. Such nonsense.)
