The director of the 2006 comedy film “Idiocracy” says an attempt to use the movie’s characters in humorous political ads was stopped by 20th Century Fox.

It was announced that they were anti-Trump,” Mike Judge told the Daily Beast in a Friday interview. “I would’ve preferred to make them and then have the people decide.” Judge said screenwriter Etan Cohen and actor Terry Crews — who starred in the film as President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho — were on board, but the studio who owned the rights to “Idiocracy” put a “roadblock” up. “Terry Crews had wanted to just make some funny Camacho ads, and Etan [Cohen] and I had written a few that I thought were pretty funny, and it just fell apart,” he said. “I just heard that they were put on the shelf, so it looks like they’re not going to happen.” The idea for the ads came after Cohen wrote a viral tweet comparing the 2016 presidential race to the film: “Idiocracy” follows an average American who traveled 500 years into the future to find himself surrounded by a society of idiots. The ads written by Cohen and Judge would have juxtaposed scenes from the film with current political clips that are similar. “Three or four years ago, I started getting comments about it, people discovering it, and it just keeps building. Now every other Twitter comment I get is about ‘Idiocracy,’ and how it’s a documentary now,” Judge added in the interview. “It’s surreal,” he said. “I didn’t want ‘Idiocracy’ to get popular by the world getting stupider faster. I guess I was 450 years off! But yeah, it’s a tad bit scary!”
