What’s ‘digital blackface?’ And why is it wrong when White people use it?

Maybe you shared that viral video of Kimberly “Sweet Brown” Wilkins telling a reporter after narrowly escaping an apartment fire, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

 

Perhaps you posted that meme of supermodel Tyra Banks exploding in anger on “America’s Next Top Model” (“I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!”). Or maybe you’ve simply posted popular GIFs, such as the one of NBA great Michael Jordan crying, or of drag queen RuPaul declaring, “Guuuurl…”

 

If you’re Black and you’ve shared such images online, you get a pass. But if you’re White, you may have inadvertently perpetuated one of the most insidious forms of contemporary racism.

 

You may be wearing “digital blackface.”

 

What is digital blackface?

Digital blackface is a practice where White people co-opt online expressions of Black imagery, slang, catchphrases or culture to convey comic relief or express emotions.

 

These expressions, what one commentator calls racialized reactions, are mainstays in Twitter feeds, TikTok videos and Instagram reels, and are among the most popular Internet memes.

 

Digital blackface involves White people play-acting at being Black, says Lauren Michele Jackson, an author and cultural critic, in an essay for Teen Vogue. Jackson says the Internet thrives on White people laughing at exaggerated displays of Blackness, reflecting a tendency among some to see “Black people as walking hyperbole.”

 

If you’re still not sure how to define digital blackface, Jackson offers a guide. She says it “includes displays of emotion stereotyped as excessive: so happy, so sassy, so ghetto, so loud… our dial is on 10 all the time — rarely are black characters afforded subtle traits or feelings.”

 

Many White people choose images of Black people when it comes to expressing exaggerated emotions on social media – a burden that Black people didn’t ask for, she says.

 

“We are your sass, your nonchalance, your fury, your delight, your annoyance, your happy dance, your diva, your shade, your ‘yaas’ moments,” Jackson writes. “The weight of reaction GIFing, period, rests on our shoulders.”

 

Why digital blackface is wrong

Some may say posting a video of Sweet Brown saying, “Oh Lord Jesus, it’s a fire” is just for laughs. Why overthink it? Why give people yet another excuse for labeling White people racists for the most innocuous behaviors?

 

But critics say digital blackface is wrong because it’s a modern-day repackaging of minstrel shows, a racist form of entertainment popular in the 19th century. That’s when White actors, faces darkened with burnt cork, entertained audiences by playing Black characters as bumbling, happy-go-lucky simpletons. That practice continued in the 20th century on hit radio shows such as “Amos ‘n’ Andy.”

 

“Historical blackface has never truly ended, and Americans have yet to actively confront their racist past to this day,” Erinn Wong writes in an academic paper on the topic.

 

“In fact, minstrel blackface has emerged into even more subtle forms of racism that are now glorified all over the Internet.”

 

Wong says that digital blackface is wrong because it “culturally appropriates the language and expressions of black people for entertainment, while dismissing the severity of everyday instances of racism black people encounter, such as police brutality, job discrimination, and educational inequity.”

Defining digital blackface isn’t easy

In trying to define digital blackface, it depends on who you talk to. The standard for some is comparable to what one Supreme Court Justice once said when asked his test for pornography: “I know it when I see it.”

 

This guidance might help: If a White person shares an image online that perpetuates stereotypes of Black people as loud, dumb, hyperviolent or hypersexual, they’ve entered digital blackface territory.

 

And yet even with that definition, it’s hard to figure out exactly what is and isn’t digital blackface.

 

This is the challenge that Elizabeth Halford faces.

 

Halford, a brand designer, wrote an apologetic essay in 2020 about how she made a meme out of Wilkins’ “Ain’t nobody got time for that” catchphrase and sent someone a GIF of the singer Beyonce repeating, “I’m not bossy, I’m the boss.”

 

“I’ve engaged in digital blackface,” Halford wrote.” I’ve laughed at people of color on the news facing horrifying crime and disaster and loss. I’ve appropriated Black trauma as punchlines and peeled their faces off to put on my own and say what I can’t say, to make you laugh, or just because it went viral.”

 

Halford tells CNN she was bothered that she overlooked the context of Sweet Brown’s interview. The woman had just experienced a tragedy.

 

“I guess we find it funny, the way (Black) people tell their story with so much flair,” she says. “but at the end of the day, one woman’s apartment building burned down while she was in bed.”

 

But Halford says that doesn’t mean she won’t use any more GIFs of Black people. She doesn’t object to the Beyonce “I’m the boss” meme because she thinks it empowers women. She says that as long as a meme or GIF “is empowering and not demeaning” she feels free to use it.

 

Besides, Halford says, if she refrains from using any Black memes, she runs into another problem:

 

“Those are the most effective, because White people are so boring,” she says.

 

Jackson, in her Vogue essay, acknowledges it can be hard to know where to draw the line.

 

“Now, I’m not suggesting that white and nonblack people refrain from ever circulating a black person’s image for amusement or otherwise…” she writes. “There’s no prescriptive or proscriptive step-by-step rulebook to follow, nobody’s coming to take GIFs away.”

 

But no digital behavior exists in a deracialized vacuum, she says. A White person can spread digital blackface without malicious intent.

 

“Digital blackface does not describe intent, but an act — the act of inhabiting a black persona,” she adds. “Employing digital technology to co-opt a perceived cache or black cool, too, involves playacting blackness in a minstrel-like tradition.

 

“No matter how brief the performance or playful the intent, summoning black images to play types means pirouetting on over 150 years of American blackface tradition.”

 

So whatever happened to Sweet Brown?

Another challenge with defining digital blackface is that some of the alleged victims of the practice might chafe at being labeled casualties of racism.

 

Consider what happened to the woman now known as Sweet Brown after she went viral. She hired an agent and appeared on “The View” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” An Auto-Tuned version of her original video now has at least 22 million views.

 

Sweet Brown did go public with accusations that she had been exploited. But it had little to do with her race.

 

Is Sweet Brown the victim of digital blackface? Or did she benefit from the exposure?

 

It’s a tough question. But in the meantime, if you are a White person who is contemplating using a “hold my wig” GIF, you should consider the advice Jackson offers in her Teen Vogue essay to White people who playact being Black online.

 

Jackson writes:

 

“If you find yourself always reaching for a black face to release your inner sass monster, maybe consider going the extra country mile and pick this nice Taylor Swift GIF instead.”

The artificial intelligence chatbot service ChatGPT suffered an outage and data breach due to a bug, the developer, OpenAI, announced on its site on Friday. Experts had previously warned about the service being a cybersecurity risk.

 

The company explained that the service was taken offline on Monday to deal with a bug that allows some users to see others’ personal information. The “unintentionally visible” information included an “active user’s name, email address, payment address, the last four digits (only) of a credit card number, and credit card expiration date.” The company announcement assured clients that full credit card information was “not exposed at any time.” OpenAI then pledged to take a series of steps to improve the system’s safety to prevent any further incidents. Seizing Russian assets is ‘challenging’ – EU task force head

Debates on the legality of assets expropriation continue, with many arguing it could become a dangerous precedent

 

The EU working group that deals with the issue of confiscating frozen Russian assets will have to be “innovative” in approaching the task, Swedish diplomat and head of the EU’s “freeze and seize task force,” Anders Ahnlid, told AFP on Friday.

 

According to Ahnlid, “it is a challenge to find legal means that are acceptable” to expropriate the assets in order to use them for thereconstruction of Ukraine, which is the task force's plan. He noted that precedents for such actions are rare, one of the few being the seizure of Iraqi assets by the US at the end of Saddam Hussein's regime.

 

“Hopefully, we can achieve results during Sweden's EU presidency [which ends in June]… But these are complicated matters. There will be short-term and long-term aspects of what we're doing,” the diplomat warned, adding that his working group will have “to be a bit innovative in order to move forward.”

 

He noted that the task force is still trying to determine “which assets are we talking about and where are they.” There are two types of assets –state propertythat belongs to the Russian government and private assets. The former mostly refers tonearly $300 billion in Russia’s foreign currency reserves, which have been frozen by the West. According to Ahnlid, they are easier to seize legally. The latter, however, are much harder to identify and can be seized only in a few cases, for instance when they can be proven to be the proceeds of a crime. The diplomat says the task force may decide not to confiscate these assets permanently, but only seize income or interest on the capital.

 

Ahnlid is not the first to point out the difficulties surrounding the plan to confiscate Russian assets. The Swiss government, for instance, has been opposed to the move, saying last month that it would violate international agreements and Switzerland’s constitution.

 

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has also been openly skeptical, warning that apart from legal obstacles, such a step could be considered aprecedent jeopardizing faith in the Western financial systemand the dollar. According to her, countries could becomereluctant to keep money in US banks, fearing that their funds could be seized as well. Many analysts also point out that the move could put European and American assets at risk, as they could also be in danger of being confiscated in case of an international dispute.

Russia outproducing West's ammunition supplies to Kiev – Putin

However, Putin said that Moscow’s forces have been using far more munitions than Ukraine, and that the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff “even had to introduce certain limitations.”

 

“Russia’s output level and its military-industrial complex are developingat a very fast pace, which was unexpected by many,” he said. While multiple Western countries will provide Ukraine with munitions, “the Russian production sector on its own will producethree times moreammunition for the same period of time,” according to the president.

 

Putin also noted that the Western “instigators”of the conflict plan to send more than400 tanks to Ukraine. “The situation here is the same as with the ammunition. During that period, we willproduce and modernize over 1,600 [tanks],” he said, adding that the total number will exceed Ukraine’s by more than three times.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX), who is joining former President Donald Trump for a rally in Waco, Texas, Saturday evening, told Breitbart News Saturday that the target on Trump’s back clearly shows that he is “our guy” moving forward, contending that the far left is “running scared” because they know Trump is going to restore the country to how it was during his first term.

 

Hunt said he expects Trump to give a powerful message to the American people during tonight’s rally in the Lone Star State, drawing a stark contrast between the state of the country now and how it was with former President Trump at the helm. Biden, Hunt explained, has given the United States “the worst border crisis” and “worst inflation I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

 

The congressman predicted that Trump will lay out his “Day One” plan to put America back on track.

 

“We are a joke on the world scale, and that’s only because of the failed policies of Joe Biden. What we’re gonna see from President Trump tonight is lay out a plan for what he is going to do on day one when he is elected in the next couple of years,” he said, noting that the plan involves ensuring that the priorities of taxpaying Americans remain the number one issue for the federal government.

 

“I think we’re gonna get a big dose of that from the president tonight,” he said.

 

Notably, this will be Trump’s first public rally since announcing that he expects to be indicted. Hunt pointed out that Trump has been “the most investigated American in the history of Americans” and mocked the left and Trump’s critics, observing that this “hush money” allegation — which he described as a “false story” — is still the only thing they “have” on him.

Kanye West changes his mind about Jewish people

WEST READING, Pa. (WHTM) — RM Palmer Company, the chocolate company that owns the factory that was destroyed in an explosion, as well as The Hershey Company released statements regarding the event on Saturday, March 25.

 

In the statement, the company stated in part that they are “devastated by the tragic events at one of our West Reading facilities and we are focused on supporting our employees and their families.”

 

The Associated Press states that the explosion killed two people and left five people missing. One person was pulled from the rubble overnight.

Philip Wert, vice president of the West Reading council, said the building had been constructed in the late 1950s or early 1960s, and officials had to “access our archive to pull the blueprints last night, in order to get a better layout of the building and the mechanicals and the utilities, where things are,” the Associated Press reported.

Pennsylvania offers a window into why doubters and deniers of the 2020 presidential election want to serve as poll workers and watchers.

Employees of Montgomery County in suburban Philadelphia wheel voting machines into the front hallway of a local high school two weeks before Election Day.

 

This is poll worker training day.

 

Dozens of poll workers go through a dry-run of procedures before voting starts in Pennsylvania, a state with a close U.S. Senate race that could determine which party controls the chamber.

 

For many, the training is a refresher course.

 

Barbara Rieck served in her first election 10 years ago.

 

“I'm a glutton for detail,” says Rieck, aretired pharmaceutical supplies coordinator. “Handling the paperwork for the election is fun for me.”

 

There are also new poll workers in the mix.

 

Lisa, who declines to share her last name, says she signed up partly because of doubts about the last presidential race.

 

Does she think the 2020 election was stolen?

 

“Kind of,” she answers.

 

Working the election will help her believe voting is secure, she explains.

 

“Because when I'm seeing it, I believe it and I know what's happening for real,” Lisa says. “When I'm not seeing something, it's hard to believe because you're not seeing it.”

 

Groups spreading false information about the 2020 election are encouraging supporters to get involved in the voting process this year.

 

Audit The Vote PA claims, baselessly, that the 2020 election was stolen.

 

Toni Shuppe, the group’s leader, turned down Newsy's request for an interview.

 

Shuppe has said enlisting poll workers and watchers is one of the most important ways to ensure voting is fair.

 

“The mainstream is trying to paint us all as election deniers and crazy kooks,” Shuppe says in a video posted to Audit The Vote PA’s Facebook page. “All we want is an accurate count at the end of the day, and for both parties to be able to walk away from the election comfortable that the certified result is going to reflect what the voters wanted.”

 

Audit The Vote PA, and the Election Integrity Force, a national group supporting former President Donald Trump, are particularly focused on boosting numbers of poll watchers.

 

Unlike poll workers, who check in voters and handle ballots, watchers observe voting.

 

Pennsylvania allows certified watchers to review voter lists and challenge a voter’s identity.

 

Audit The Vote PA says it has trained 6,000 people to serve as poll watchers this year.

 

“Does it deter fraud necessarily? No. But I have to believe that just having eyes in there, if somebody has been paid to stuff the ballot box in their precinct, they'll think twice if there's eyes on it,” Shuppe says in another video posted to Facebook.

 

There have been isolated reports of aggressive observers causing disruptions in the name of election integrity.

 

A report from Pima County, Arizona, described an increase in private citizens during primary voting this summer “demanding to gain access to our facilities to observe. Sometimes these individuals were loud, actively filming or otherwise harassing voters and/or early voting site workers.”

 

Election officials across the country tell Newsy they are aware misinformed poll workers and watchers could cause trouble.

 

“We do have concerns that, they're obviously, they're coming in with known biases,” says Carly Koppes, clerk and recorder for Weld County, Colorado. “They're having a set goal of trying to find what they believe are flaws and fraud in our election process.”

 

Election officials say they often know less about the poll watchers planning to be in precincts compared to poll workers.

 

While Pennsylvania county boards of election certify official observers, they come from political parties and candidates and may not go through the rigorous coaching of a poll worker.

 

“Since poll watchers are recruited by the candidates and the campaigns directly, I don't get an opportunity to interface with them one-on-one or in a setting like this ahead of the election,” Montgomery County Voter Services Director Dori Sawyer tells election workers gathered for training.

 

Sawyer says instructions for poll watchers are printed on the back of their certificate “to assist with setting expectations.”

 

She and other local voting officials contacted for this story expressed faith that common safeguards in polling places should keep voting secure.

As in many states, Pennsylvania strives for a bipartisan split among poll workers.

 

Watchers must stay in a designated space away from voters.

 

Precincts have an election judge with the authority to remove anyone who tries to intimidate a voter or gets too close to someone casting a ballot.

 

“I'm confident that if any issues do arise, that our team is primed and ready to tackle whatever comes our way," Sawyer says. “Handle it with grace, and swiftly, and efficiently.”

 

Working or observing an election can turn a skeptic into a believer of the process, Sawyer says.

 

“I think that the closer that people get to something that they have questions about,” she says, “the more that they see that there's nothing to see.”

 

Being a poll worker for the first time this spring and going through hours of training have been eye-opening for Lisa, who questioned the accuracy of the 2020 election, and says she’s not part of Audit The Vote PA.

 

"When you're on the other side of the table, so to speak, it's really different,” Lisa says at the end of the poll worker training session.

 

She now feels better about the outcome of the 2020 vote.

 

“Because of all the accountability, the checks and balances and things like that,” Lisa says. “It's really hard to, you know, kind of rig it.”

Apple boss hails China ties

Tim Cook has praised the company’s nearly 30-year-long relationship with the country, both as a market and a manufacturing hub

 

US iPhone maker Apple and China have “grown together” over the past three decades, and the relationship between the company and one of its largest markets has become “symbolic,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the China Development Forum in Beijing on Saturday.

 

In his first visit to China since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Cook said the company would soon celebrate the 30th anniversary of operating in the Chinese market.

 

“We could not be more excited… Apple and China… grew together and so thishas been a symbiotic kind of relationship,” Apple CEO stated, as cited by the Financial Times.

 

During his speech, Cook also praised Apple’s “very large supply chain operation in China,” as well as “a thriving App Store” in the country. According to Reuters, citing a local news outlet, Cook also praised China’s efforts with regard to innovation technologies, stating that “innovation is developing rapidlyin China and I believe it will further accelerate.”

 

The CEO also mentioned education and the “need for young people to learn programming critical thinking skills,” adding that Apple plans to increase spending on itsrural education programin China to 100 million yuan ($14.5 million).

 

Cook’s visit comes at a time when Beijing and Washington are at loggerheads over the latter’s attempts to block Chinese access to US technology. The trip also follows a difficult year for Apple, which suffered from supply chain constraints due to China’s zero-Covid controls. The company’srevenue in the final quarter of 2022fell for the first time in over three years after it had to delay deliveries of some of its products during the holiday period due to supply disruptions in China.

 

Сook did not mention either problem in his speech, however, which some analysts see as a show of support for the country.

 

While Apple has reportedly been mulling boosting iPhone production in India, industry experts say the company is unlikely to shift production in the near term, as the scope of products it manufacturesin China is too vast. A report by CNN, citing an estimate from market research firm Counterpoint, said that as of September 2022 Apple’s manufacturing plant in the city of Zhengzhou wasproducing 85% of its iPhone Pros.
