Jeff Thomas, a 35-year-old actor and model, was found dead in Miami in a possible suicide.

He was reportedly in a relationship with Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire and conservative donor.

Miami police view the case as a possible suicide and plan to interview Thiel, The Intercept said.

Jeff Thomas, who was 35, was found dead on March 8 in a complex of high-rise residences and a hotel on Brickell Avenue in Miami, according to an incident report.

The Intercept said Thomas was in a relationship with Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire who has spent millions to support right-wing politicians. The publication reported that Thiel is expected to be interviewed as part of the probe.

Miami police declined to confirm details. "It is still an open, active investigation, and we can't comment on open cases," a public information officer told Insider.

The Intercept's D.C. Bureau Chief Ryan Grim reported that Thomas spoke to him about being "kept" by Thiel, who has been married to another man since 2017. Thomas claimed to have met Thiel at Coachella in 2015 or 2016, the article said. Before moving to Miami, he lived in a $13 million Hollywood Hills mansion and Thomas's friends told The Intercept they would often see Thiel at the residence.

"It's not like I was his boyfriend, really, I was just kind of his friend that was there for him when he needed, you know, whatever he needed," Thomas said, according to The Intercept.

The Intercept reported that Thomas and Thiel had been seen at each others' homes, including at raucous parties. The story also said that Thomas claimed that he tried to convince Thiel not to support anti-gay politicians like Blake Masters, who he spent millions trying to get elected.

"I told him to stay out of politics," Thomas said, according to the Intercept. "And he did, and so he didn't support Trump in 2020. He stayed out of it. I was like, OK, great. So I did my part, I influenced him to stay out of it."

Thiel wasn't very active in the 2020 presidential election, the New York Times reported, but in the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections, he met with Trump and supported many hard-right Republicans. Masters, who had worked with Thiel and ran for US Senate in Arizona, lost.

Thomas said he had doubts about his relationship with Thiel, the Intercept reported, and the two were not living together.

Thiel didn't reply to an email seeking comment sent on Friday morning.

“Let’s wait to see if there are going to be charges. Let’s see what the charges are. Let’s see what the evidence is,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (Calif.), vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. “And we should let law enforcement do their jobs without political interference.”

Trump stirred a hornet’s nest over the weekend when he predicted he would be indicted this week for his role in a 2016 payment to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The prediction proved false

— the grand jury in the case is expected to meet again next week

— but the very idea drew howls from Trump’s GOP allies on Capitol Hill, where the chairmen of three powerful House committees demanded that Bragg testifies before Congress.

“Your actions will erode confidence in the evenhanded application of justice and unalterably interfere in the 2024 presidential election,” Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), James Comer (R-Ky.), and Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) wrote to Bragg on Monday. Jordan chairs the Judiciary Committee; Comer leads the Oversight panel, and Steil heads the Administration Committee.

Bragg responded to the Republicans on Thursday, writing that Trump had created a “false expectation” in predicting his arrest this week. He declined the GOP entreaties to provide information, and Democrats are backing him, accusing Republicans of strong-arming judiciary officials and defending Trump over the rule of law.

“I was astonished, actually, when I saw the letter from the three committee chairs to Mr. Bragg, essentially calling on him to violate grand jury secrecy laws in New York, which of course is a felony,” Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, told reporters on Thursday. “He rightly declined to do that.”

Yet Republicans are not the only figures criticizing Bragg this week. Some liberals are voicing concerns that the Manhattan district attorney is moving too quickly in the hush money case, fearing his indictment might arrive before federal and state prosecutors investigating several other episodes

— including Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and his effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election

— bring potentially more severe charges.

Those liberal voices say an early indictment in Manhattan could benefit Trump politically, by rallying support from Republican voters who might be shifting away from the former president, but remain sympathetic to his warnings of a national “deep state” conspiracy targeting conservatives by all levels of government. They’re suggesting Bragg should back off to let the other investigations proceed first.

“A charge like this

“I always scratch my head when I hear that

— as if we have the ability to politically choreograph the sequencing of criminal justice. I mean, give me a break,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) said.

“The process and the law should just play out, and we should stay the hell out of it.”

A vast majority of Democrats appear to agree. While many acknowledged there might be a political advantage if the Justice Department brought the first charges surrounding the Jan. 6 attack

— or Georgia prosecutors were the first to indict Trump for interfering in the 2020 election

— they emphasized that those are independent investigations being conducted by separate agencies, and any coordination between them would taint all of the probes.

“From a political standpoint, it may have an impact on how this is all interpreted and received, and how certain people are able to spin it,” Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) said, referring to the possibility that Bragg may be the first prosecutor to bring charges. “But the central question is the independence of these prosecutors, and their ability to do their jobs. And they have to do their jobs regardless of the political fallout.”

Bragg’s office has sent recent signals that it may soon indict Trump in the scandal that involved Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, paying Daniels $130,000 in return for her silence surrounding an alleged affair with Trump a decade earlier. Trump, who denies the affair, later reimbursed Cohen, who was subsequently convicted of a series of felonies, spent time in prison, and is now the central witness against his former boss.

But it’s still unknown whether or when the grand jury will see fit to indict Trump, what the charges would be, or how challenging the path is to a potential conviction.

Legal observers suggest an indictment of Trump would likely focus on charges of falsifying business records, a misdemeanor. Pursuit of a felony would require showing the falsification was connected to another crime, but those options all carry their own pitfalls.

As the debate has evolved, some powerful Democrats

— including Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who led Trump’s first impeachment

— have accused the Justice Department of moving too slowly in its investigations. But others said the sheer scope of the Jan. 6 probe is enough to justify the marathon process.

“The good news is the Department of Justice doesn’t care about my perception of their pace,” Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) said, pointing to the independence of the agency.

“When you are conducting an investigation that involves the former president of the United States you want to be sure that you have crossed every T and dotted every I. I think it does feel like it’s been a long time, but obviously, they’re gonna do what is necessary to fully investigate,” he said.

The hush money case also had a head start compared to the other probes, with the conduct first coming to light in 2018 and under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney’s office since May of 2021. Some Democrats said it’s been all but inevitable that the Stormy Daniels scandal would yield the first charges.

MONTICELLO, Minn. – Xcel Energy will start to power down its nuclear plant in Monticello several weeks earlier than planned after more radioactive water leaked out of the facility.

The company says it will shut down the facility starting Friday so crews can begin to make permanent repairs after 400,000 gallons of radioactive water leaked out beneath the facility late last year.

On Wednesday, the plant's monitoring equipment detected that more radioactive water, hundreds of gallons worth, had leaked out since crews made temporary repairs, and it had reached the groundwater. Officials say the contaminated water, containing the radioactive isotope tritium, has not yet reached the Mississippi River, which runs next to the plant.

Xcel reported the initial leak to state officials in November of 2022, but the public wasn't informed until last week.

State officials, and the national Nuclear Regulatory Commission, defended the choice to delay public notification for months, with NRC officials stating that it wasn't warranted due to its small scale.

Valerie Myers, a health physicist with the NRC, told WCCO last week that the amount of tritium that's in the water is negligible.

"If we look at the dose impact of something like this, it would be a fraction of a milligram. I'm talking 0.00-something milligrams. The average person will get 300 milligram in a year just from the sun, the ground, everything," Myers said.

Xcel says powering down the plant will make it easier for crews to "permanently resolve" the leak, which occurred in a water pipe between two buildings at the plant, which is about 42 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

The company insists the leak poses no risk to neighbors or the environment, and the shutdown isn't expected to impact electric service.

Xcel will hold two open hours at the Monticello Community Center to answer questions: Friday, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Monday, March 27 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Chocolate factory explosion in West Reading leaves 2 dead, 9 unaccounted for

"It was the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life," a witness said. "It was scary."

WEST READING, Pennsylvania (WPVI) – Two people are dead after a four-alarm fire erupted from a West Reading chocolate factory Friday evening.

According to West Reading police, nine people are still unaccounted for.

Officials say there is an unknown amount of injuries at this time.

Several local fire crews responded to the scene. The fire was broke out just before 5 p.m. at the RM Palmer Company following a large explosion.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion coming from the candy factory, then saw flames shortly after.

Kristen Wisniewski lives three blocks from the local and well-known chocolate company.

"It was the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life," she said. "It literally felt like the ground fell out from underneath you. The whole house shook and my dogs froze, they couldn't move, it was scary."

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a gas leak, but officials are still investigating the cause.

No one was evacuated as a result of the explosion. West Reading's mayor, a firefighter herself, was on the scene and asked that anyone within a one-block radius stay away from the area.

"It's pretty leveled, unfortunately there's not too much to be able to salvage from it," said Mayor Samantha Kaag. "In the front, with the church and the apartments, the explosion was so big that it moved that building four feet forward."

The damage is extensive. Officials say RM Palmer Building #2 is destroyed and there's damage at the neighboring Palmer building #1.

When a father and son duo first heard the explosion, they said they didn't know what to think.

"I didn't know, I just come running out and saw that mess over there. I think it was a gas explosion the way it sounded," said Garry Witmoyer from Wyomissing. "It was very scary, the building filled with smoke from just the explosion."

"I didn't see flames at first, just a bunch of shingles and materials falling from the sky. I knew it was an explosion," said Witmoyer's son, Garry Witmoyer Jr.

Officials say there is no danger to the community at this time. Fire crews are still on the scene clearing the debris.

There is no word yet on the condition of those hospitalized. Officials have also not released the victims' names.
