okay…. what you're seeing is a time-lapse composite image. the spacecraft, STEREO is in a heliocentric orbit just barely inside the earth's orbit around the sun, and the HI1 and HI2 instrument packages are designed to image the solar wind in the inner solar system. the blob that "protrudes" from the center right edge is part of the support for the imaging system, ie, like your finger sticking out in front of your camera lens. the "object" that seems to enter the field of view from the lower right and move toward the center is really just an internal reflection of the earth, which is the larger sphere entering the field of view from the upper left. you'll notice that the movements of the two are in exact symmetry about the center of field. what appears as a triangular shape coming from the internal reflection as it approaches the image of the earth itself is just a characteristic of optics that create the internal reflection. notice too that as the earth again recedes to the left, the reflection recedes to the right, still maintaining perfect symmetry around the center of field, and as the distance increases, the triangular artifact also begins to vanish. since the STEREO spacecraft is orbiting the sun in the same plane as the planets, they sometimes pass in front and behind one another. they are not crashing into each other and are in fact tens of millions of miles apart. the diagonal band slanted to the left, which appears to cross the field of view from left to right is in fact the milky way in the background, from more or less the same perspectiveas it would be seen from earth. look closely, and it is clearly recognizable.

bottom line… no UFO destroying a object about to crash into the earth. nothing unusual at all, except maybe your over-active imagination.

K THEN?
