Valero Seeks U.S. Approval to Import Venezuelan Oil

HOUSTON/WASHINGTON, March 30 (Reuters) – Valero Energy Corp VLO.N, the second-largest U.S. oil refiner, is seeking Washington’s permission to import Venezuelan crude, according to four people close to the matter, hoping for a repeat of the approval granted to Chevron Corp in November after a four-year ban.

President Joe Biden’s administration has eased some U.S. sanctions on the OPEC-member nation in an effort to encourage a political dialog with the country’s opposition. That has led to further pressure from U.S., European and Asian energy firms, but Washington has resisted any additional major steps for now.

Venezuelan oil resumed flowing to the U.S. in January under a Treasury Department license granted to Chevron that allowed it to expand output there and export the oil. Refiners including Valero and Phillips 66 have bought cargoes from Chevron, according to U.S. Customs and shipping data.

The Chevron decision came as part of negotiations for humanitarian aid and a presidential election. But efforts to fund the aid by releasing Venezuela’s frozen money abroad have stalled and no new talks have been scheduled since that time.

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro tweeted this week that the U.S. has agreed to attend an international conference on Venezuelan democracy to be held in Bogota.

CHEVRON-STYLE EXEMPTION

Valero is asking the Treasury for a Chevron-style exemption from sanctions and allow it to directly purchase crude from Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA, said one of the sources, who is based in Washington.

Other details of the Valero request were not immediately known. No decision appears imminent, the source said, signaling that the U.S., for now, does not want to be seen further easing Venezuela sanctions until President Nicolas Maduro makes political concessions to Venezuela’s opposition.

Before oil sanctions were imposed on PDVSA in 2019, Valero was among the U.S. top three receivers of the South American country’s crude through long-term supply contracts that have not expired.

A Valero spokesperson said the company has not contacted the U.S. Treasury Department for permission to import Venezuelan oil.

“I am told that we have not applied for a license,” said spokesperson Lillian Riojas.

PDVSA did not reply to requests for comment. The Treasury Department declined comment.

The U.S. has banned all cash payments to Maduro’s administration under its easing of sanctions. Chevron’s license – and approvals granted to European firms Eni ENI.MI and Repsol REP.MC – allow only for oil or debt swaps.

‘NO NEW LICENSES’

“The United States provided targeted, time-limited sanctions relief to support efforts to restore democracy and alleviate the suffering of the Venezuelan people,” said a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, referring to the six-month license granted to Chevron in November.

“We have no new licenses to announce or preview,” the spokesperson added.

Chevron’s resumption of Venezuelan crude imports has not led to an increase in the country’s overall exports this year, according to PDVSA schedules and Refinitiv Eikon data. The No. 2 U.S. oil company exported some 86,000 barrels per day of Venezuelan oil in February.

PDVSA’s new boss Pedro Tellechea in January suspended most oil supply contracts while reviewing payments for past shipments. That suspension has recently brought Venezuela’s exports almost to a halt, with only four customers – Chevron, Iran, Cuba and Hangzhou Energy – authorized to lift cargoes.

The investigation into payments and disclosure of $21.2 billion in commercial accounts receivable since 2020 this month prompted the resignation of powerful Oil Minister Tareck El Aissami and the arrest of top PDVSA officials.

Biden Leaves Market And Military Unclear About Strategic Oil Reserve

The Biden administration’s inconsistent approach to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has raised concerns and intensified skepticism among oil producers and tanker owners. Initially, the White House proposed refilling the SPR at specific oil prices (between $67 and $72 per barrel) aiming to strike a balance between supporting the industry and protecting consumers. However, crude oil prices have since dipped below $70 and recent statements by Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Biden’s energy security adviser, Amos Hochstein, suggest a wavering commitment to this strategy.

This uncertainty coincides with the fallout from Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse, which significantly impacted oil futures. Amid this chaos, there was an opportunity for the Energy Department to refill the SPR and signal support for domestic oil producers. Still, the administration’s contradictory messaging has left the oil markets unclear about its intentions.

“The story here is not that complicated,” today wrote a Liam Denning, the Bloomberg Opinion columnist covering energy, mining and commodities. “Bank failure and fear of contagion hit risk assets of many types. Money managers stampeded out of oil-price bets at a pace that would do SVB’s depositors proud. Rory Johnston, who writes the Commodity Context newsletter, calculates speculative open interest in crude contracts fell during the two weeks through March 21 at its fastest pace on record. Net speculative length collapsed to its lowest level since March 2020. In other words, this was the sort of blood-on-the-streets moment where buyers with a cool head and cash on hand could swoop in. Like an Energy Department nominally seeking to refill the SPR and signal support to domestic oil producers, for example.”

But the Department of Energy did not swoop in and it’s uncertain when it will.

According to Denning about 75% of the 180 million barrels released from the SPR have already been “refilled” by canceling future Congress-mandated sales. However, a gap of 40 million barrels remains, which will grow to over 60 million this year as the last of the mandated sales are executed.

“Biden’s energy policy is a high-wire act balancing green objectives with the demands of energy security today,” writes Denning. “As with the recent approval of the Willow oil project in Alaska, the president will draw fire from within his own party’s ranks for anything that looks friendly to fossil fuels. Yet the underlying logic of using the SPR to modulate the market is sound green politics, too. As last year’s brush with $5 pump prices, and Biden’s response, demonstrated, he is apparently aware that letting oil supply drain ahead of demand is a good way to lose power before an energy transition can take hold.”

“Why else make a show of the new approach on the SPR in the first place?”

And then there is the strategic importance of oil reserves. In the current situation affecting the global tanker markets – tight supply accompanied by high charter rates – is being driven by the conflict in Ukraine and headlines show the difficulty countries around the world are having sourcing energy. A conflict with China would have more dramatic consequences for the markets. There would be significant but unpredictable impacts on oil markets, tanker markets, and trade flows upon which to base assumptions on tanker availability.

“In the event of a broad conflict with China in the Pacific theater, the U.S. will likely lose reliable access to the currently relied-upon sources of oil within the Pacific region,” wrote Captain Stephen M. Carmel, Senior VP at Maersk Line Limited, in a recent article on oil security. “The U.S. will then need to manage exceedingly long lines of supply to ensure oil flows to the forces in the greatly increased quantities demanded by a wartime operational tempo.”

North Korea Unveils New Nuclear Warheads as USS Nimitz Arrives in South

SEOUL/BUSAN, March 28 (Reuters) – North Korea unveiled new, smaller nuclear warheads and vowed to produce more weapons-grade nuclear material to expand its arsenal, state media said on Tuesday, as a U.S. aircraft carrier arrived in SouthKorea for military drills.

North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released photos of the warheads, dubbed Hwasan-31s. Leader Kim Jong Un visited the Nuclear Weapons Institute and inspected new tactical nuclear weapons and technology for mounting warheads on ballistic missiles, as well as nuclear counterattack operation plans, KCNA said.

Nuclear experts said the images could indicate progress in miniaturizing warheads that are powerful yet small enough to mount on intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of striking the United States.

“It has something more powerful in a smaller space. That’s worrisome,” said Kune Y. Suh, professor emeritus of nuclear engineering at Seoul National University, comparing the new warheads to the 2016 version.

Kim Dong-yup, a former South Korean naval officer who teaches at Kyungnam University, said the images appeared to show “a miniaturized, lightweight and standardized warhead” intended for use with at least eight different delivery platforms listed in posters on the wall, including missiles fired from submarines.

“Now that the delivery vehicles are nearly ready, they would churn out warheads to secure second strike capabilities – perhaps hundreds, not dozens – while running centrifuges even harder to get weapons-grade nuclear material,” he said.

Kim Jong Un ordered the production of weapons-grade materials in a “far-sighted way” to boost its nuclear arsenal “exponentially” and produce powerful weapons, KCNA said.

He said the enemy of the country’s nuclear forces was not a specific state or group but “war and nuclear disaster themselves,” and the policy of expanding the arsenal was solely for defensive purposes and regional peace and stability.

U.S. EXERCISES

In Washington, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said the United States remained willing to discuss verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, but North Korean had shown no desire for such talks.

“So we will continue to make sure that we have the appropriate military capabilities and the appropriate readiness to use those capabilities if need be, to protect our national security interests and those of our allies,” he said, referring to large-scale military exercises underway with South Korea.

Kim was also briefed on an IT-based integrated nuclear weapon management system called Haekbangashoe, which means “nuclear trigger,” whose accuracy, reliability and security were verified during the simulation of a nuclear counterattack, KCNA said.

North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles on Monday and conducted a nuclear counterattack simulation last week against the U.S. and South Korea, which it accused of rehearsing an invasion. A commentary in North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun said the U.S.-South Korea military exercises amounted to “an open declaration of war.”

KCNA said the North Korean military simulated a nuclear airburst with two tactical ballistic missiles equipped with mock warheads and tested a nuclear-capable underwater attack drone.

It said the Haeil-1 drone reached a target in waters off the northeast coast after cruising along a “jagged and oval” 600km (373-mile) course for more than 41 hours.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said Pyongyang did not deserve “a single penny” of economic aid while pursuing nuclear development, his spokesman said.

A South Korean military spokesman said additional analysis would be needed to verify whether North Korea’s new warheads were deployable. He said the report on the underwater drone was most likely “exaggerated and fabricated.”

U.S. CARRIER STRIKE GROUP

On Tuesday, a U.S. carrier strike group led by the Nimitz docked at South Korea’s Busan naval base after joint drills. It was the carrier’s first visit in nearly six years and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.

South Korean Rear Admiral Kim Ji-hoon said the joint exercises were intended to improve U.S. extended deterrence – a reference to the U.S. nuclear umbrella protecting its ally – given the evolving North Korean threat.

The strike group commander, Rear Admiral Christopher Sweeney, said his ships were prepared for any contingency.

“We don’t seek conflicts with (North Korea). We seek peace and security. We’re not going to be coerced, we’re not going to be bullied and we’re not going anywhere,” he told reporters.

World Shipping Council Responds to Ocean Shipping Antitrust Enforcement Act: Why?

The World Shipping Council (WSC) has voiced its opposition to the bipartisan Ocean Shipping Antitrust Enforcement Act, introduced this week by U.S. Representatives Jim Costa (CA-21), Dusty Johnson (SD-AL), John Garamendi (CA-08), Josh Harder (CA-09) and Jimmy Panetta (CA-19).

The proposed legislation aims to repeal the exemption for foreign ocean carriers from federal antitrust laws and address unfair practices affecting American businesses and consumers.

According to a U.S. Department of Transportation report, the top 10 foreign-based ocean carriers, operating foreign-flagged vessels, control over 80% of the shipping market. The new act would apply antitrust laws to these carriers, allowing the U.S. to address unfair trade practices, such as unjustified rate increases, excessive fees, and unexplained schedule changes.

US Ocean Shipping Antitrust Enforcement Act Takes Aim At Container Carriers

However, the WSC, representing liner shipping companies, argues that the Shipping Act provides legal certainty for ocean carriers to share space on ships, ensuring competitive markets and efficient services. WSC President and CEO John Butler says that vessel sharing arrangements (VSAs) benefit the supply chain, and removing such a system would undermine competition and choice in liner shipping services.

“Nobody has offered a reason why we should throw away such a useful tool as vessel sharing arrangements, and I think some of the rhetoric comes from a misunderstanding about how VSAs help the supply chain work better,” says Butler.

VSAs are operational agreements between ocean carriers that allow them to share space on each other’s ships. According to the WSC, this allows more carriers to provide more services more efficiently to more ports than carriers could provide individually, leading to benefits for shippers, ports, consumers, and supply chain workers.

The WSC argues that liner shipping is already a hotly contested market. In its Fact Funding 29 Report last May, the independent Federal Maritime Commission found that “the individual ocean carriers within each alliance continue to compete on pricing and marketing independently and vigorously”, and that “[t]he transpacific is a highly contestable market.”

Butler highlights that VSAs are purely operational agreements, allowing carriers to minimize transport costs while offering more frequent sailings and serving more ports. Carriers within a VSA compete with each other and those outside the VSA when selling their services.

The WSC is keen to work with the bill’s sponsors to better understand their policy objectives and address misconceptions about VSAs.

“We look forward to working with the bill’s sponsors to better understand their policy objectives. A similar bill was introduced in the last Congress, but did not gather significant support,” said Butler.

“Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people,” wrote John Adams, the second President of the United States “It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Adams’ assessment of the character required of men and women to abide by the supreme law of the land was shared by other Founding Fathers, including James Madison, the fourth U.S. president. Frequently hailed as the Father of the Constitution, Madison declared in Federalist No. 55, that the pact binding together the original thirteen states demands “sufficient virtue among men for self-government.”

The question now before us is, what happens when the people are cut off from the source of morality, religion, and virtue? That is, what consequences befall an America whose ruling class deliberately sets about to extinguish the light that guides us? We are now tragically beginning to get a clearer picture of what a Godless America looks like.

In our most recent newsletters, we explored The Federalist Papers in a series of articles published to educate and inform our fellow Americans as to the significance these historic writings are to the birth of our nation. These crucial American essays and articles authored by three of the Founding Fathers — Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay — urged the thirteen states to ratify the Constitution to set into motion a design of ordered liberty – a decent civil society rooted in faith and individual freedom.

Now we turn our attention to America’s norms and practices, social and cultural along with political and legal, created by the Constitution, or what is called the “constitutional order.” In the first few installments of our new series, we’ll start by describing how that order is under attack and later in the series, explore how we may, as a nation, repair it.

You likely followed the reports from earlier this week about a murderous assault on a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee that left six dead, three of them children. That the killer was a purported transgender activist underscores the plain fact that Americans have inched toward understanding in the last several years: Our struggle to preserve our inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is not simply political but is also, maybe primarily, spiritual.

Our constitutional order holds that we are equal under the law because we are all created in God’s image. But this essential insight is precisely what transgender ideology is determined to undermine – “make” ourselves in whatever fashion we deem fit. And do not forget, that transgenderism is an industry as well, enriching corporate elites in the pharmaceutical and medical industry, including major political donors, all profiting from the despair of others.

With transgenderism now a pillar in the ruling establishment’s twisted and anti-Christian ideology, the violence we saw this week, and the political class’s hollow response to it, alerts us to the fact that lines are being drawn against Christians and other people of faith. Out to destroy our country, they will use whatever means useful to bring chaos, disorder, and confusion to this nation – children, manipulation, executive orders, hypocrisy – whatever it takes. We urge you to join us in standing for our rights and defending our lives in a fight we never asked for but one that may decide the future of our nation.

NYPD Ordering Every Officer to Show Up in Uniform For ‘Possible Unrest’ Over Trump Indictment

The New York City Police Department is reportedly ordering every officer, regardless of rank or assignment, to wear their uniform tomorrow in case of “possible unrest” over President Donald Trump’s indictment.

The news comes despite NYC being an extremely liberal area and with no protests announced by any conservative groups.

An internal NYPD memo obtained by PIX11 News stated that “officers of all ranks should perform their duties in uniform and be prepared for mobilization beginning Friday morning.”

Trump previously called for protests but has not repeated the call following the news of the indictment breaking.

Last week, a powdery substance and a threatening letter were sent to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office. The substance was tested, and Bragg spokesperson Danielle Filson said that law enforcement “determined there was no dangerous substance.”

Bragg claimed that he has continued to receive threatening emails and letters over the political prosecution of a former president.

Trump is the first president to ever be criminally charged in history.

The New York Times first reported on the Trump indictment. They wrote:

A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Donald J. Trump on Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star, according to four people with knowledge of the matter, a historic development that will shake up the 2024 presidential race and forever mark him as the nation’s first former president to face criminal charges.

The felony indictment, filed under seal by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, will likely be announced in the coming days. By then, prosecutors working for the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, will have asked Mr. Trump to surrender and to face arraignment on charges that remain unknown for now. Mr. Trump has for decades avoided criminal charges despite persistent scrutiny and repeated investigations, creating an aura of legal invincibility that the vote to indict now threatens to puncture.

But unlike the investigations that arose from his time in the White House, this case is built around a tawdry episode that predates Mr. Trump’s presidency. The reality star turned presidential candidate who shocked the political establishment by winning the White House now faces a reckoning for a hush money payment that buried a sex scandal in the final days of the 2016 campaign.

Mr. Trump has consistently denied all wrongdoing and attacked Mr. Bragg, a Democrat, accusing him of leading a politically motivated prosecution. He has also denied any affair with the porn star, Stormy Daniels, who had been looking to sell her story of a tryst with Mr. Trump during the campaign.

Mr. Cohen has said that Mr. Trump directed him to buy Ms. Daniels’s silence, and that Mr. Trump and his family business, the Trump Organization, helped cover the whole thing up. The company’s internal records falsely identified the reimbursements as legal expenses, which helped conceal the purpose of the payments.

Although the specific charges remain unknown, Mr. Bragg’s prosecutors have zeroed in on that hush money payment and the false records created by Mr. Trump’s company. A conviction is not a sure thing: An attempt to combine a charge relating to the false records with an election violation relating to the payment to Ms. Daniels would be based on a legal theory that has yet to be evaluated by judges, raising the possibility that a court could throw out or limit the charges.

Mr. Bragg is the first prosecutor to lead an indictment of Mr. Trump. He is now likely to become a national figure enduring a harsh political spotlight.

USSF completes service dress uniform fit tests

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Space Force completed its final service dress uniform fit test March 27-31 at the Pentagon. The initial fit test was conducted February 13-17 at Peterson Space Force Base.

Fit tests are an essential process in developing the prototype’s sizing and fit. One hundred Guardians worldwide were selected as fit test participants, an important milestone in delivering a first-rate uniform.

“From the word ‘go’ we have been committed to keeping Guardian feedback at the forefront of developing the service dress,” said Col. James Jenkins, director of the Office of Change Management Team. “We know Guardians are excited for a uniform they can call their own and we are accelerating as quickly as possible to deliver a product they can wear with pride.”

The Space Force unveiled its initial service dress uniform prototype in September 2021, quickly followed by a uniform roadshow garnering Guardian feedback.

“We used Guardian focus groups and roadshows to narrow service dress design options,” said Wade Yamada, U.S. Space Force Director of Staff deputy. “We listened intently to Guardian design and fit requests. In many ways, Guardians helped select our current service dress design.”

The next step in developing the service dress uniform is the wear test to assess the durability, functionality and comfort of the prototype. The wear test will begin in summer 2023.

During the wear test, Guardians will wear the uniform three times a week and provide detailed feedback assessing the prototypes.

“We are excited by Guardians’ input into their future uniform,” said Catherine Lovelady, Office of Change Management Team uniform lead. “We are passionate about ensuring our members continue to have a voice in shaping a unique Space Force uniform.”

Guardian feedback will continually be at the forefront of uniform development as the service works toward delivering to the force in late 2025.

Nokia is set to launch 4G internet services on the moon later this year

Finnish telecommunications major Nokia plans to set up 4G networks on the moon. Yep. The moon. The company hopes to aid lunar discoveries by enabling internet access on the Earth's natural satellite.

Plans are in motion to launch the network on a SpaceX rocket over the coming months, Nokia’s principal engineer - Luis Maestro Ruiz De Temino - told reporters earlier this month at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

According to the manufacturer, the network on the moon is going to be powered by an antenna-equipped base station stored in a Nova-C lunar lander designed by U.S. space firm Intuitive Machines, as well as by an accompanying solar-powered rover.

Once on the surface, an LTE connection will be established between the lander and the rover. The infrastructure will land on the Shackleton crater, which lies along the southern limb of the moon.

The network will be used within Nasa’s Artemis 1 mission, which aims to send the first human astronauts to walk on the moon’s surface since 1972.

The aim is to show that terrestrial networks can meet the communications needs for future space missions, Nokia said, adding that its network will allow astronauts to communicate with each other and with mission control, as well as to control the rover remotely and stream real-time video and telemetry data back to Earth.

Hubble Finds Saturn's Rings Heating Its Atmosphere

The secret has been hiding in plain view for 40 years. But it took the insight of a veteran astronomer to pull it all together within a year, using observations of Saturn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and retired Cassini probe, in addition to the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft and the retired International Ultraviolet Explorer mission.

The discovery: Saturn's vast ring system is heating the giant planet's upper atmosphere. The phenomenon has never before been seen in the solar system. It's an unexpected interaction between Saturn and its rings that potentially could provide a tool for predicting if planets around other stars have glorious Saturn-like ring systems, too.

The telltale evidence is an excess of ultraviolet radiation, seen as a spectral line of hot hydrogen in Saturn's atmosphere. The bump in radiation means that something is contaminating and heating the upper atmosphere from the outside.

The most feasible explanation is that icy ring particles raining down onto Saturn's atmosphere cause this heating. This could be due to the impact of micrometeorites, solar wind particle bombardment, solar ultraviolet radiation, or electromagnetic forces picking up electrically charged dust. All this happens under the influence of Saturn's gravitational field pulling particles into the planet. When NASA's Cassini probe plunged into Saturn's atmosphere at the end of its mission in 2017, it measured the atmospheric constituents and confirmed that many particles are falling in from the rings.

"Though the slow disintegration of the rings is well known, its influence on the atomic hydrogen of the planet is a surprise. From the Cassini probe, we already knew about the rings' influence. However, we knew nothing about the atomic hydrogen content," said Lotfi Ben-Jaffel of the Institute of Astrophysics in Paris and the Lunar & Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, author of a paper published on March 30 in the Planetary Science Journal.

"Everything is driven by ring particles cascading into the atmosphere at specific latitudes. They modify the upper atmosphere, changing the composition," said Ben-Jaffel. "And then you also have collisional processes with atmospheric gasses that are probably heating the atmosphere at a specific altitude."

Ben-Jaffel's conclusion required pulling together archival ultraviolet-light (UV) observations from four space missions that studied Saturn. This includes observations from the two NASA Voyager probes that flew by Saturn in the 1980s and measured the UV excess. At the time, astronomers dismissed the measurements as noise in the detectors. The Cassini mission, which arrived at Saturn in 2004, also collected UV data on the atmosphere (over several years). Additional data came from Hubble and the International Ultraviolet Explorer, which launched in 1978, and was an international collaboration between NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), and the United Kingdom's Science and Engineering Research Council.

But the lingering question was whether all the data could be illusory, or instead reflected a true phenomenon on Saturn.

The key to assembling the jigsaw puzzle came in Ben-Jaffel's decision to use measurements from Hubble's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). Its precision observations of Saturn were used to calibrate the archival UV data from all four other space missions that have observed Saturn. He compared the STIS UV observations of Saturn to the distribution of light from multiple space missions and instruments.

"When everything was calibrated, we saw clearly that the spectra are consistent across all the missions. This was possible because we have the same reference point, from Hubble, on the rate of transfer of energy from the atmosphere as measured over decades," Ben-Jaffel said. "It was really a surprise for me. I just plotted the different light distribution data together, and then I realized, wow – it's the same."

Four decades of UV data cover multiple solar cycles and help astronomers study the Sun's seasonal effects on Saturn. By bringing all the diverse data together and calibrating it, Ben-Jaffel found that there is no difference to the level of UV radiation. "At any time, at any position on the planet, we can follow the UV level of radiation," he said. This points to the steady "ice rain" from Saturn's rings as the best explanation.

"We are just at the beginning of this ring characterization effect on the upper atmosphere of a planet. We eventually want to have a global approach that would yield a real signature about the atmospheres on distant worlds. One of the goals of this study is to see how we can apply it to planets orbiting other stars. Call it the search for 'exo-rings.'"

New Program Office Leads NASA’s Path Forward for Moon, Mars

NASA has established the new Moon to Mars Program Office at NASA Headquarters in Washington to carry out the agency’s human exploration activities at the Moon and Mars for the benefit of humanity. Amit Kshatriya will serve as the agency’s first head of the office, effective immediately.

This new office resides within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, reporting to its Associate Administrator Jim Free.

“The Moon to Mars Program Office will help prepare NASA to carry out our bold missions to the Moon and land the first humans on Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “The golden age of exploration is happening right now, and this new office will help ensure that NASA successfully establishes a long-term lunar presence needed to prepare for humanity’s next giant leap to the Red Planet.”

As directed by the 2022 NASA Authorization Act, the Moon to Mars Program Office focuses on hardware development, mission integration, and risk management functions for programs critical to the agency’s exploration approach that uses Artemis missions at the Moon to open a new era of scientific discovery and prepare for human missions to Mars. This includes the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, supporting ground systems, human landing systems, spacesuits, Gateway, and more related to deep space exploration. The new office will also lead planning and analysis for long-lead developments to support human Mars missions.

Kshatriya previously served as acting deputy associate administrator for Common Exploration Systems Development, providing leadership and integration across several of the programs that now fall within the new office.

Lakiesha Hawkins will serve as the deputy for the Moon to Mars Program Office. As deputy, Hawkins will support Kshatriya in all aspects of the office’s day-to-day management and operations. Stephen Creech will serve as the technical deputy for the office. In this capacity, Creech will be responsible for ensuring technical issues are identified and brought to resolution across all of the offices and programs under the Moon to Mars Program Office.

Updates to the mission directorate also include the Strategy and Architecture Office that develops the integrated master plan based on the agency Moon to Mars Objectives, alongside NASA’s Science, Space Technology, and Space Operations Mission Directorates. With these changes, NASA will continue to lead the nation in exploration while also building a coalition of international partners in deep space with the Artemis Accords.

Since establishing its Exploration Systems Mission Directorate in September 2021, NASA has worked diligently to assess and align its two human spaceflight organizations while remaining focused on Artemis and other agency mission priorities including International Space Station operations, commercial crew and cargo, and more.

The Space Operations Mission Directorate remains responsible for all low-Earth orbit space operations and is focused on the space station, space communications and navigation supporting all NASA human and science exploration missions, as well as a continued development of a vibrant and expanding commercial space economy closer to home. Space Operations also manages the Launch Services Program, Commercial Crew Program, Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program, Human Spaceflight Capabilities, and other associated resources.

Other organizational updates include a business function for each mission directorate to manage administrative processes and financial formulation, and the exploration operations function will report to the Moon to Mars Program to maximize efficiency for integrated risk management with the relevant hardware programs supporting Artemis missions.

Through Artemis, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, paving the way for a long-term, sustainable lunar presence to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before and prepare for future astronaut missions to Mars. This is NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach.

Florida will not extradite Trump – DeSantis

The former US leader is a Florida resident, and is expected to be arraigned next week

Donald Trump’s potential top rival for the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has ripped the New York City prosecutor behind the criminal indictment of the former president.

“Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstancesat issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda,” DeSantis said in a tweet on Thursday.

So far there has been no reports of any potential extradition requests, as a spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney's office told AP that prosecutors had reached out to Trump's legal team to “arrange a surrender” and a court appearance, expected sometime next week.

DeSantispreviously said he wouldn’t get involved in the case “in any way,” indicating that he wouldn’t try to help block the Florida resident’s extradition to New York, but has now echoed Trump’s belief that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg “is stretching the law to target a political opponent.”

“The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head. It is un-American,” DeSantis added.

Trump did not reveal his next steps, but warned in a post on Truth Social that this “witch-hunt will backfire massively on Joe Biden,” while his lawyer Joe Tacopina vowed to “vigorously fight this political prosecution in court.”

Grand jury indicts Donald Trump

The former president is “expected to surrender to authorities” next week, according to US media reports

Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on Thursday for his alleged role in paying hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, according to his lawyer and court sources cited by US media.

Whilespecific charges were not immediately made public, Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, confirmed to AP that the grand jury voted to indict Trump on Thursday. CNN and other US outlets also confirmed the indictment, citing multiple “sources familiar with the matter.”

“We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court,” Tacopina said, insisting that his client “did not commit any crime.”

A spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney's office confirmed the indictment, which is expected to be officially announced in the coming days. Trump will be requested to surrender and appear in court to face arraignment on the still-sealed charges, multiple news agencies reported, citing unnamed sources.

The case centers on an alleged payment of $130,000 made by Trump to Stormy Daniels via his then-lawyer Michael Cohen during the final stages of his campaign for the US presidency in 2016. It was alleged in a legal case against Cohen that Trump later reimbursed him with several payments of $35,000 which were recorded as legal expenses, opening up further allegations of possibly falsifying business records, the non-payment of taxes and potential violations of campaign finance law. Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal charges related to the alleged hush-money payment.

Trump had consistently denied the affair and any knowledge of the hush payment, and warned last week of potentially disastrous consequences if he is arrested and charged. The former president has since called on his supporters to “protest” and “take our nation back” in the event that he is officially charged and arrested by the “corrupt and highly political Manhattan district attorney’s office.”

-Professor Turley is a very respected liberal law professor and longtime civil libertarian. Has been critical of both parties over the years.

-Turley says the use of John Huber gives the IG the prosecutor he needs to bring charges and seek indictments. (No need to go through RR which is critical)

-Huber is conducting a full-fledged criminal investigation into all the matters Republicans are calling for a special counsel to investigate.

-Huber has been investigating these possible crimes for five months (Now seven), since November 2017.

-By giving the IG a prosecutor they can now go after the deep state without looking like a political witch hunt. This is critical.

-Sessions informed Congress in his letter that all the matters recommended for investigation by Goodlatte, Gowdy, and Grassley are “fully within the scope of [Huber’s] existing mandate.” He also informed the chairmen that Inspector General Michael Horowitz, who is working with Huber, has a staff of 470 investigators, giving Huber access to enormous investigative firepower that far exceeds the staff of any special counsel. (Who needs a SC with that type of manpower?)

-The inspector general’s jurisdiction to conduct civil and criminal investigations includes “actions taken by former employees after they have left government service.” Then Huber can act on any of those matters.

-This is HUGE A Grand Jury can be empaneled anywhere, in any deep red state, away from D.C. (This is very important and why Trump needed to appoint as many Judges as possible)

-Huber and Horowitz can accomplish everything a SC can do.

-If Sessions feels that charges should have been made that weren't, he can still appoint a SC to make that happen.

-Huber is a lawyer from deep red Utah, not the D.C. swamp.

-“If a special counsel were appointed, there would be a great deal of delay,” Turley stated, versus the team of Huber and Horowitz, who are already five months into this investigation. (It's too late to even appoint a SC. Charges can be filed before midterms.)

-From /u/ClardicFug - Huber and Horowitz were both appointed to their positions by the Obama administration. This helps optics a lot. Pretty much decimates the "Trumped rigged the investigation" argument that's sure to be made.
