I'm not saying it doesn't sound nice to my ears but it just makes me feel sad. Like sad as in I just lost my entire Battalion and I'm the only one that made it and now everyone in the village is wondering why I didn't die as well so I'm thought of as a coward so I should have just died as well dammit even though I basically ended up having to 1 vs 100 the last remaining enemy forces with my bear hands and I'm actually a Legend. As Russian forces advanced on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Russia’s Supreme Court finally terminated the existence of Memorial, Russia’s oldest and best-known human rights group.

The timing was a grim reminder of what is now in jeopardy as a result of Putin’s criminal aggression against Ukraine, and how much is at stake.

For even amid the brutal military attack, Ukraine still has what Russia under Putin has lost: independent media, independent judges, human rights groups, anti-corruption activists, and others who strive to make ensure the system work for everyone, even the weakest. We call that civil society. It is the essence of a robust and vibrant democracy. For Putin, it is anathema.

The Open Society Foundations have been supporting civil society across Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and around the world, for three decades. That included opening a foundation in Ukraine in 1990, the International Renaissance Foundation; the projects it has supported have included everything from ending corruption in the awarding of university degrees to supporting reforms of the public health system and developing a system of accessible legal aid.

We used to work in Russia too, supporting legal reforms, fighting against the spread of HIV/Aids, and even paying the salaries for a while of former Soviet scientists. But that was all before Putin shut everything all down. Scared by popular unrest that overturned strong-man allies in Georgia, in Yugoslavia, and in Ukraine too, Putin decided that independent civil society was a threat to his consolidation of power. He will do the same again if he prevails in Ukraine.

So what should we, as a philanthropic fund, do?

With hundreds of thousands of people streaming out of Ukraine, and millions of civilians in harm's way, the demands for humanitarian assistance are huge, and a massive humanitarian assistance operation is moving ahead.

But supporting Ukraine’s hopes for an independent, democratic future and more broadly challenging Vladimir Putin’s assault on liberal, democratic government across Eastern Europe and Central Asia involves more than a humanitarian response. It calls for a redoubling of support for the idea of an open society, and for the myriad voices and groups who stand up for human dignity and accountable government in Kazakhstan, in Hungary, in Poland, in Moldova, in Kyrgyzstan, in Armenia all voices that can be mobilised now in solidarity with Ukraine. All voices that Vladimir Putin wants to silence.

That is why we have launched the Ukraine Democracy Fund with a $25 million (€23 million) commitment to support not only Ukraine’s now beleaguered civil society groups but also those across the region. And it is why we are inviting other private funders, including philanthropists and the private sector, to contribute. We hope the fund will eventually total over $100 million (€91 million). Russia itself provides the example of what is at stake.

The closure of Memorial was just part of the silencing of independent voices as Putin gradually expanded his power which included the murder of some of the bravest individuals such as human rights activists Natalia Estemirova and Stanislav Markelov, both killed in 2009, the journalist Anna Politkovskaya, shot dead in 2006, and opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in 2015. Today, the country’s leading opposition figure, Alexei Navalny, is serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence in a penal colony, having barely survived an attempt to poison him in 2020 with the nerve agent Novichok.

So, now in Russia, there is no organised opposition to Putin’s war. No mass protests. No critical debate on TV channels entirely controlled by Putin and his cronies. In a closed society, one view prevails – even if it is the voice of madness and destruction.

Today we cannot foresee the outcome in Ukraine, and the future fills many of us with deep foreboding, as we recall the Nazi seizure of Czechoslovakia in 1938.

But while the military struggle continues, Open Society and our partners will continue to support our Ukraine foundation and all the groups they work with, and other independent voices across the region. We will push back against the silence.

Eventually, the guns will fall silent. When they do, whatever the outcome, we know where we will stand: with those who understand that the survival of humanity, and our ability to overcome the existential challenges we face, demands not the dog-eat-dog savagery of a Vladimir Putin, but a tolerant, democratic open society.

Drone incident hindered US intelligence gathering – CNN

The Pentagon has rerouted its spy drones over Black Sea following an encounter with a Russian jet

 

A decision by President Joe Biden’s administration to reroute drone flights over the Black Sea to avoid provoking a direct conflict with Russian forces hascurtailed intelligence gathering on the Ukraine crisis, a senior US military official has told CNN.

 

Flying drones at greater distances from the conflict zone and at higher altitudes has reduced the quality of the intelligence that they can gather, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing the senior official without identifying the source. The rerouting was allegedly ordered earlier this month, after a US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drone was forced down over the Black Sea by a Russian Sukhol Su-27 fighter jet on March 14.

 

Although thePentagon was publicly dismissiveof Russian complaints about the drone flight, declaring that the US will continue to “fly and operate wherever international law allows,”Washington began routing its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) further south, keeping them at a greater distance from the Crimean peninsula and eastern portions of the Black Sea.

 

The rerouting was done to “avoid being too provocative,” CNN previously cited another US official as saying. However, the outlet said, there isalready “an appetite” to resume flying the UAVs closer to Crimea.

 

A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment on how, if at all, the quality of intelligence gathering in the Black Sea has been affected. “We maintain a robust ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) capability in the region and beyond,” he said.

 

The Pentagon accused Russian pilots of reckless flying, claiming that one of the jets clipped the propeller of the unmanned aircraft, causing it to go down. However, the footage purportedly shot by the drone, only showed a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet buzzing over it and allegedly ejecting fuel in the process. Russia denied hitting the drone or using weapons against it, and said the US aircraft was flying with itstransponder switched offin a no-go zone declared by the Russian military.

 

The new drone routes have kept the flights more than40 nautical milesnot only from Crimea but the Ukrainian coast as well, rather than the 12 miles normally recognized as the limit of a nation’s airspace, CNN said. Having moved the flights further south, it may be more difficult to return to the former routes and assert freedom of international airspace for US aircraft, the senior official said.US Navy vesselshave stayed out of the Black Seasince December 2021.

NASA has selected Dr. Jon B. Olansen as the new manager of the agency’s Gateway Program, an international collaboration building humanity's first lunar space station, which will support Artemis missions to the Moon.

 

“Jon is a brilliant engineer and talented leader with an exceptional history of managing large projects with innovative approaches to exploration,” said Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “He’s a perfect fit for Gateway, which brings together international and commercial partnerships, and is an essential element in future human space exploration. The program is in excellent hands.”

 

Olansen replaces Dan Hartman, who is retiring after having served as Gateway program manager since its formation in 2019.

 

“Dan has assembled an outstanding team in the Gateway Program,” Olansen said. “It’s been an honor to work with him, and I look forward to building on the foundation he’s laid for Gateway as it plays its part in the expansion of human frontiers in the near future.”

 

Olansen has also been with the Gateway Program since its inception, managing the development of HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) module, where astronauts will live and conduct research while visiting Gateway on Artemis missions. The HALO module, along with Gateway’s power and propulsion element, will be the first components of the space station to launch in 2025.

 

For shepherding HALO through its preliminary design review, an important milestone that demonstrates that an initial mission design meets all system requirements within cost, schedule, and risk restraints, Olansen received the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2022.

 

Olansen began his career at Johnson in 1989 as a flight controller, and since then has had roles of increasing responsibility within the Astronaut Office, the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, the Space Shuttle Program and Johnson’s Engineering Directorate. In his most recent role before joining Gateway’s team, Olansen led development of Orion’s Ascent Abort-2 crew module and subsequent spacecraft integration and flight test operations, successfully demonstrating the critical performance of Orion’s launch abort system in flight.

 

In addition to the Outstanding Leadership Medal, Olansen has received two NASA Exceptional Service Medals, a NASA Systems Engineering Tech Excellence Award, a NASA Space Flight Safety Award, a “Silver Snoopy” Personal Achievement Award, and many other honors.

 

Once established around the Moon, Gateway will host many capabilities for sustained exploration and research in deep space, including docking ports for a variety of visiting spacecraft; space for crew to live, work, and prepare for lunar surface missions; and onboard science investigations to study heliophysics, human health, and life sciences, among other areas. Gateway will be a critical platform for developing technology and capabilities to support future Mars exploration.

 

A part of NASA’s Artemis missions, which will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, Gateway will help pave the way for a long-term, sustainable lunar presence and prepare for future astronaut missions to Mars.

Baltimore blocks East Palestine toxic water dump

The contractor hired by Norfolk Southern to clean wastewater from its Ohio rail accident must find another destination

 

A Baltimore contractor has agreed to relocate the processing of hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic wastewater from the site of last month’s Norfolk Southern train derailment after local officials mounted strong opposition to the disposal plan. Clean Harbors of Baltimore Environmental Services announced on Tuesday morning that approximately600,000 to 800,000 gallons of water from East Palestine, Ohio would be processed elsewhere.

 

Local officials had only learned on Friday that Norfolk Southern had contracted with Clean Harbors to ship enormous amounts of contaminated water from the derailment site to Baltimore. From there, the water would have beenpiped into Baltimore’s aging, leaky sewer system, and from there it would travel to the city’s troubled Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Just last year, the state declared theplant to be on the brink of “catastrophic failure,” and less than a month ago one of the plant’s buildings dedicated to processing sewage sludge suffered a massive explosion requiring its closure.

 

While the Baltimore city council voted on Monday to implore the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider allowing the wastewater to be sent there, the agency has refused to hear any objections, having warned state environmental agencies in a letter earlier this month that blocking Norfolk Southern’s hazardous materials from their jurisdictions would be “impermissible” as a violation of the Interstate Commerce Clause of the Constitution.

Germany reveals reason for boosting aid to Ukraine

Letter to Bundestag seeks 15 billion euros over the coming years, citing Kiev’s battlefield losses

 

Heavy losses of equipment in battlemean that Ukraine’s military needs more tanks, artillery and air defenses, as well as maintenance for them, according to a letter from the German treasury to the parliament revealed by Der Spiegel on Tuesday.

 

Finance Minister Christian Lindner wrote to the Bundestag on Monday, and the parliamentary budget committee met on Tuesday in secret to consider his request, according to the German outlet. He is asking for 3.2 billion euros ($3.47 billion) more this year and another 8.8 billion ($9.54bn) for “ongoing commitments,” on top of 2.2 billion ($2.39 bn) already spent on Ukraine.

 

“Due to the high material losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, new supplies of material are required,” the treasury wrote, further arguing that a number of procurement and maintenance contracts for “needs-based sustainable equipment” of Kiev’s military need to be concludedimmediately.

 

The letter specifically says the Ukrainians needmore air defense, armored tracked vehicles – including tanks – and ammunition for tanks and artillery. Supplying the weapons systems also creates a “follow-up obligation”to provide ammunition, service and maintenance, the treasury added.

 

The additional expenses are “objectively unavoidable,” Lindner argues, because “without ongoing support to Ukraine, there is a serious danger of it losing” in the conflict against Russia, “with unforeseeable consequences for peace in Europe.”

 

Even so, Lindner did not want to submit a supplementary budget request for this funding, but asked the parliamentarians tofind unspent moneyin other departments, including the funds appropriate for dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Spiegel.

 

Asked about the Spiegel revelations on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Berlin’s decision to boost aid to Kiev “does not bode well.”

 

“Current relations between Russia and Germany leave much to be desired,” Peskov added. “Germany takes an active part in pumping up Ukraine with weapons, directly and indirectly increasing its level of involvement in the conflict.”

 

The Russian Defense Ministry estimated that the US and its allies had spent over $100 billion to prop up the Ukrainian military by the end of 2022. Multiple Western officials have publicly declared thatRussia “must lose” or be “strategically defeated,”while insisting that their countries were not actually taking part in the conflict.

There is such a push for fat acceptance and racial acceptance but there is null and void for transgender people.

I have suffered this from a young age, I remember being very young and having a hair cut that was significantly shorter than normally I would have.

I saw in the mirror a person I didn't recognize. In later years when I discovered sexual aspects of myself, I found other features not blending with my perceived expression.

Honestly, I don't want to go into much detail; but long story short, I have always identified with the female experience and form.

The body just doesn't follow, but I'm okay with that; I have taken the time to refigure my situation and explain to myself that it okay and who I am is who I am regardless of what I am.

 

I do not push my identity onto others, as there is a personal ecosystem of identity and an external.
