Population boom: Australia will open its doors to 650,000 migrants over the next two years - putting even more pressure on the housing shortage

 

Australia is set to see its biggest two-year population growth ever with more than 650,000 migrants arriving this financial year and 350,000 expected in the next year.

 

More than half of the expected migrants arrived in Australia as part of the post-Covid boom in skilled workers, international students and working holiday-makers.

 

In the first three months of this financial year, from July to September 2022, about 106,000 migrants arrived in Australia, according to The Australian.

 

Since September, another 304,000 people have come to live and work with two-thirds settling in New South Wales and Victoria.

 

It marks the highest population rise since March 2009.

 

Jim Chalmers has revealed net overseas migration this financial year is likely to be 350,000, a 50 per cent rise on what was expected in the October budget and January's annual population statement.

 

Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy told a Senate hearing last month temporary migration had recovered faster than expected.

 

'Net overseas migration numbers are being artificially boosted this year by the resumption of inward flows of international students and working holiday-makers,' Dr Kennedy said.

 

'Coupled with broad softening in hiring demand, increases in net overseas migration should help to ease skill and labour ­shortages, particularly for the hospitality and retail sectors.'

JPMorgan chief Jamie Dimon executive to be deposed in Epstein lawsuits

 

The deposition is set to take place in May behind closed doors.

 

Chief executive of JPMorgan Chase Jamie Dimon is set to be interviewed under oath over his bank’s decision to keep on infamous financier Jeffrey Epstein as a client as part of two of lawsuits brought forth by an alleged Epstein victim and the US Virgin Islands.

 

The deposition is set to take place in May behind closed doors, according to the Financial Times. JPMorgan banked Epstein from 1998 to 2013.

The lawsuits claimed that JPMorgan ignored several internal warnings regarding Epstein’s illegal activities and that the banking giant benefitted from human trafficking. The bank has called these claims meritless.

 

During the pre-trial process, communications between JPMorgan employees revealed a reference to a "Dimon review" into the bank’s relationship with Epstein.

 

According to the Financial Times, JPMorgan has denied that Dimon had any knowledge of such a review. A person familiar with the matter said that no record was found during the internal probe of Dimon being in direct contact with Epstein or being included in any discussions regarding keeping him as a client.

 

JPMorgan lawyers have resisted attempts to depose Dimon, and have tried to limit during the pre-trial process the range of documents handed over.

 

Judge Jed Rakoff denied in part last week the bank’s request to dismiss the lawsuit, and allowed some of the claims made against JPMorgan as well as Deutsche Bank to proceed.

 

Rakoff later ordered the bank to hand over communications regarding Dimon and former general counsel Steve Cutler from before 2006, when Epstein was first arrested.

 

Former JPMorgan executive Jes Staley is set to be deposed by his former employer’s lawyers in April, with the complaint stating that Staley witnessed and participated in sex crimes at Epstein’s residences and did not disclose such details.

 

A person familiar with the matter told the Financial Times that Dimon was originally set to be deposed in April as well, but lawyers argued that Dimon’s interview should take place after Staley’s.

24-year-old Raniere allegedly seduced and sexually abused the 15-year-old Gina Melita after the two met in a theater group. After ending their relationship, Melita introduced him to her friend Gina Hutchinson, also 15, whom he also abused. After Gina's sister Heidi found Raniere climbing into her bedroom window and confronted the pair, Raniere told her that Gina was a "Buddhist goddess meant to be with him."

Gina dropped out of school and continued her relationship with Raniere, working at Consumers' Buyline, his multi-level marketing company, for a time. On October 11, 2002, she was found dead of a gunshot wound to her head on the grounds of the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Buddhist monastery in Woodstock, an apparent suicide.

Earlier this fall, Florida prosecutors dropped charges against New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft for allegedly getting a rub-and-tug at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Florida, on the grounds that surveillance footage used to try to prosecute him was illegally obtained. But even though Kraft has managed to avoid the fist of the law, the women involved in the case — largely, middle-aged Asian immigrants — have not.

 

Three employees of Orchids of Asia, including two women who were alleged to have provided services to Kraft, have been ordered to pay thousands of dollars in fines related to the case, and are facing months of probation.

 

In 2019, Kraft was charged with solicitation as part of an anti-sex trafficking investigation into a string of about 10 massage parlors in Florida. Prosecutors alleged that on two separate occasions, on January 19th and 20th, 2019, video surveillance footage showed Kraft engaging in a sex act with a worker at the massage parlor. Kraft was charged along with 24 other men in the bust. He pleaded not guilty and the charges against him were dropped when a Florida appeals court ruled that the video surveillance footage featuring him had been obtained illegally, making it non-admissible.

 

The owner of the spa, Hua Zhang, pleaded guilty to a count of soliciting to commit prostitution and a count of renting a space to commit prostitution. She was sentenced to a year of probation and 100 hours of community service (which she can opt out of by paying an $1,000 fine) and was fined $5,000. She’ll also have to undergo STI testing as part of her sentence.

 

Another of the women, Shen Mingbi, pleaded guilty to one count of soliciting to commit prostitution. Prior to entering her guilty plea, her bank account was frozen and authorities took away her passport. She must pay $20,000 to the city of Jupiter’s police department and $5,000 in other fees. She was also sentenced to a year of probation and 100 hours of community service. A third woman, spa manager Lei Wang, was sentenced to one year probation after pleading guilty to a count of soliciting to commit prostitution. She must pay fines of up to $6,623 if she wants to get out of having to do community service. Both women will also have to undergo STI testing as part of their sentences.

 

Local police initially referred to the investigation as a sex-trafficking sting and much of the media covered it as such, to the chagrin of many sex worker activists. “The language of trafficking and sex trafficking was used over and over again, and ultimately all of these resources went to locate adults engaging in consensual activities,” says Dr. Jill McCracken, co-director of the sex-worker rights group SWOP Behind Bars. “That to me is a huge problem and a waste of resources.” Prosecutors later determined there was no evidence that sex trafficking took place at the establishment. “It was somehow easier for law enforcement officers in South Florida to believe that the women had been sold into sex slavery by a global crime syndicate than to acknowledge that immigrant women of precarious status, hemmed in by circumstance, might choose sex work,” Vanity Fair writer May Jeong wrote in an October 2019 piece about the flawed investigation.

 

The penalization of the massage parlor workers while sparing the clientele in question is “actually incredibly typical,” says sex-worker rights advocate Kate D’Adamo. “Honestly, the only unique thing about this story is that it’s getting media attention and the results of these raids are being reported beyond the initial charges.” McCracken agreed: “This does not surprise me, as upsetting as it is to say. The people with less resources are the ones ultimately paying the price.”

 

Lawyers for Kraft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Supreme Court justices under new ethics disclosures on trips, other gifts

 

Supreme Court justices and all federal judges must provide a fuller public accounting of free trips, meals and other gifts they accept from corporations or other organizations, according to revised regulations quietly adopted this month.

 

The new requirements mark a technical but significant change that lawmakers and court transparency advocates hope will lead to more disclosure by judges and justices and also make it easier for parties in specific cases to request that judges remove themselves from cases when potential conflicts arise.

 

Gifts such as an overnight stay at a personal vacation home owned by a friend remain exempt from reporting requirements. But the revised rules require disclosure when judges are treated to stays at commercial properties, such as hotels, ski resorts or corporate hunting lodges. The changes also clarify that judges must report travel by private jet.

 

The revisions come after years of pressure from members of Congress, who say the judiciary should follow ethics guidelines closer to those that apply to the executive and legislative branches.

 

The revised rules were adopted by a committee of the Judicial Conference, the courts’ policymaking body. They took effect March 14, according to a letter last week from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts replying to questions from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), who has pressed for more transparency as chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s panel overseeing the federal courts.

House GOP Subpoenas Blinken for Key Documents on Afghanistan Withdrawal

 

The House Foreign Affairs Committee has signed a subpoena for Secretary of State Antony Blinken to obtain a July 2021 Dissent Channel cable and the Secretary’s response.

 

Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) requested the cable that is believed to have warned the administration of a lack of proper preparation for President Joe Biden’s unilateral decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, according to the Foreign Affairs Committee’s March 27 press release on the subpoena.

 

The July 2021 Dissent Channel cable was written by 23 State Department officials working in the Kabul Embassy.

 

According to the committee, despite McCaul offering to review the document on camera and the State Department being allowed to redact the names of signatories to protect their privacy, they refused to provide the documents.

 

“This committee is empowered by the U.S. Constitution to conduct oversight of the State Department,” said McCaul.

 

“We have made multiple good faith attempts to find common ground so we could see this critical piece of information. Unfortunately, Secretary Blinken has refused to provide the Dissent Cable and his response to the cable, forcing me to issue my first subpoena as chairman of this committee.”

 

The committee asserts that this cable and Blinken’s response are crucial documents as they reveal what information State Department employees who were on the ground provided to Blinken about a month prior to the evacuation, as well as the secretary’s response.

 

The cable was first requested in August 2021 by then-Chairman Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) and separately by then-Ranking Member McCaul. Chairman McCaul reiterated that request on Jan. 12, 2023, and again on Jan. 30.

 

McCaul sent a letter (pdf) to Blinken on March 20, following up on previous requests and emphasizing the need for the State Department to produce the records regarding the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

 

McCaul asked that the State Department send at least three documents by March 22 in response to a query from the department to identify the materials deemed most significant to the committee’s oversight responsibilities.

 

The exploration for records coincides with Blinken’s scheduled appearance before the committee on March 23 to discuss Biden’s 2024 budget plan.

 

The chairman went on in the press release on the subpoena, “The American people deserve answers as to how this tragedy unfolded, and why 13 U.S. servicemembers lost their lives. We expect the State Department to follow the law and comply with this subpoena in good faith.”

 

The State Department did not immediately respond to The Epoch Times’ request for comment.

Democrat Bill Seeks to Ensure Transgender People Can Serve in US Military

 

Democratic lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would prohibit the U.S. Department of Defense from discriminating against or barring transgender individuals from serving in the military.

 

Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.) introduced the bill on Monday with the support of 22 Democratic co-sponsors. Though a full-text version of the legislation is not yet available, Jacobs said its purpose is to “prevent future discriminatory policies” against transgender military service members.

 

Jacobs introduced the bill just over a month after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) introduced legislation seeking to codify specific eligibility requirements for transgender individuals to serve in the military. The Republican bill, titled the “Ensuring Military Readiness Act,” would require transgender individuals to have been “stable for 36 consecutive months in their biological sex prior to accession” into the military, and would allow transgender service members who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria while in the military to remain in service as long as they do not pursue gender reassignment therapy or hormone therapy.

 

Jacobs said her bill, titled the “Ensuring Military Readiness Not Discrimination Act,” would “prevent future discriminatory policies like ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ President Trump’s transgender military service ban, and Senator Rubio and Congressman Banks’ bill that would reinstate President Trump’s transgender military service ban.”

 

“Anyone willing and able to serve our country should be able to serve authentically,” said Jacobs, who serves as vice-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus and co-chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force.

 

Jacobs also presented her bill as a way to address the military’s recent recruiting challenges. All U.S. military branches struggled with recruitment last year, and the U.S. Army missed its recruiting goal by 25 percent, or about 15,000 fewer recruits than it had planned for the 2022 fiscal year.

 

“Discrimination of all kinds, especially against the transgender and gender non-conforming communities, prevents our military from recruiting and retaining the best and brightest and weakens military readiness,” Jacobs said Monday. “As our military faces recruitment and retention challenges, we need to ensure that our policies reflect our military’s values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.”

 

Jacobs’ bill also garnered the support of various LGBT advocacy groups, including the Human Rights Campaign, SPARTA, the Modern Military Association of America (MMAA), the National Center for Transgender Equality, Minority Vets, and American Veterans for Equal Rights.

Reports say Trump Grand Jury will have the day off tomorrow and will be there for another case on Thursday.

Honey, Joe Biden Just Shrunk Our Pension into ESG

 

Biden said that ESG is good for investors and offers high returns to workers and pensioners. Wrong.

 

President Joe Biden recently issued his first veto since taking office on Jan. 20, 2021.

 

Biden rejected a bipartisan bill that would have required investment fund managers to take politics out of their investment decisions and to stay focused on providing the best return to their clients as much as possible.

 

Why should you care? Because Biden was, in effect, saying it was permissible for fund managers, who have control of trillions of dollars in pension accounts, to take into consideration a company’s ESG score (related to how it stands on racial justice, climate change and LGBT issues) when they decide where to invest the money.

 

Workers and retirees are angry about this decision — as they should be. ESG is effectively a tax on your retirement funds, and it means you will have a smaller nest egg when you retire than if the money managers simply bought the top-performing stocks. Workers don’t want politics diluting the returns on their 401(k) plans and other pension accounts.

 

Let’s step back a minute. Social investment funds have been around for decades. I’m fine with it. As a matter of conscience, if people want to avoid investing in pro- or anti-abortion causes, divest from products made with child labor or avoid owning any fossil fuel companies, gun manufacturers, plastic companies or firms that don’t have enough transgender bathrooms — it’s a free country. These funds normally underperform the market, but that’s a decision of personal conscience.

 

I try to be a socially conscientious investor myself. I don’t like the politics of Ben and Jerry’s, for example, so I try not to buy their ice cream. But to be honest, I love their ice cream, so sometimes I give in to temptation. The Left tried to stage boycotts against Chick-fil-A because of some of the owner’s social policy views, but the chicken sandwiches are so popular that the crusade failed miserably.

 

But this new fad of ESG investing is entirely different and more nefarious. ESG stands for environmental and social justice governance. The idea is to promote racial equality, save the planet from climate change, and advance gay rights and a whole host of other related trendy and mostly left-wing causes.

 

ESG investing is perfectly appropriate when the investors are making their own decisions with their own money on where and what to invest in. But the scandal arises when fund managers that make investment decisions with other people’s savings, or pension plans start injecting their own political biases into the investment portfolios and choose company stocks they should or shouldn’t buy.

 

Fund managers, such as Fidelity and Blackrock, that pool their clients’ investment dollars and pick (hopefully) high-performing stocks have what is called a fiduciary duty. They are legally required to get the best return they can. Their duty is not to save the planet.

 

Biden said in his veto message that ESG is good for investors and offers high returns to workers and pensioners. Wrong.

 

A recent analysis by Bloomberg found that last year, ESG funds severely underperformed the market — in some cases by well more than 10%. Many ESG funds were divested from oil and gas companies, even though Exxon, Conoco Phillips and others were among the highest-return stocks. In other words, if you bought the stocks that ESG funds sold, and sold the stocks that ESG funds bought, you’d have made a lot of money in recent years. And by the way, given that more than 70% of our energy now comes from fossil fuels, how does it advance our well-being as a nation by closing these energy sources down?

 

Another study by Boston College professors in retirement policy examined the performance of ESG funds and found “the average annualized return for those with a state ESG mandate would be 20 basis points lower than for those without a mandate.”

 

My estimate is that ESG has cost the public billions of dollars of reduced returns on their retirement nest eggs. This comes atop the $30,000 or so that people have lost on average in their 401(k) plans after Biden came into office, and the combination of high inflation and lousy stock market returns overall.

 

The good news is that more than a dozen Republican governors are fighting back to protect pensions from “political influences.” They are telling fund managers in their states that ESG is a violation of their duty to workers whose money has been placed in their trust. ESG should only be allowed with the explicit approval of the investor.

 

In other words, politicians and community activists aren’t very good stock pickers. So keep your grubby hands off our pensions.

Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear has signed into law a measure barring asset managers handling the state's retirement systems from considering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors when making investments with state funds.

 

Beshear signed House Bill 236 on Friday, requiring that such asset managers only consider financial factors and the interests of the fund's beneficiaries. It further explicitly bans "actions on nonpecuniary interests including environmental, social, political, and ideological interests," a summary of the bill explains.

 

State Treasurer Allison Ball celebrated the law's signing, saying "Kentucky now has the strongest anti-ESG legislation in the nation."

 

"For many years, pension investments were about maximizing returns," she continued. "Recently, however, there has been a destructive shift in investment methodology to use the savings of Americans as financial muscle to push ideological causes through the ESG movement. Kentucky has said no to this shift by passing HB 236, which clarifies that pension fiduciaries must base investment decisions solely on financial metrics, not politics."

 

ESG investing is a practice in which asset managers make investments with a mind toward non-financial considerations, such as a firm's sustainability practices. The concept has attracted scrutiny from Republicans due to concerns that this approach may constitute a breach of fiduciary duty to investors.

 

That scrutiny has grown stricter in recent weeks following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, an avid practitioner of ESG investing.

 

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis moved to bar state fund managements from considering ESG concerns in January of this year. Earlier this month, the governor announced the formation of a coalition of 19 states to combat ESG practices. Kentucky was not among them.

Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker was the ‘mystery’ witness who testified before the grand jury on Monday.

 

According to NBC News, the grand jury not expected to meet Wednesday and will not likely be asked to vote on a possible Trump indictment this week.

The New York grand jury considering possible criminal charges against former President Donald Trump related to hush money payments to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election is not expected to be asked to vote on an indictment this week, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

 

The grand jury is not expected to meet on Wednesday, the source said, the next day the panel was regularly scheduled to convene.

 

The panel has been meeting Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The sources cautioned that the schedule is subject to change, but that the grand jury for now is expected to return on Thursday to hear a matter separate from the Trump hush money case.

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Visitors flocked to see Michelangelo’s David sculpture in Florence on Tuesday, following an uproar over a Florida school’s decision to force the resignation of the principal over complaints about a lesson featuring the Renaissance masterpiece.

 

Tourists, many of them Americans on spring break or studying abroad, posed for selfies in front of the giant marble statue, which features the Biblical David, naked with a sling over his shoulder and a rock in his hand, ready for battle with Goliath.

 

Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia, which houses the sculpture, reopened Tuesday after its weekly Monday closure, and both tourists and locals alike couldn’t get over the controversy.

 

“It’s part of history,” said Isabele Joles from Ohio, who is studying French and Italian art with her school group. “I don’t understand how you can say it’s porn.”

 

She and other visitors were reacting to the decision by Tallahassee Classical School board to pressure Principal Hope Carrasquilla to resign last week after an image of the David was shown to a sixth-grade art class.

Genome of Australian fly defeats killer bacteria by evolving to co-exist with it

 

he composition of the microbiome—that is, the community of fungi, bacteria and viruses that usually exist in the gut—can affect the health of their host organisms. This includes their ability to fight disease, the level of nutrition they can extract from food and more.

 

The influence of the microbiome is particularly dramatic in the case of insects where microorganisms can exist not only in the gut of the host insect, but also inside the host's cells. These intracellular microorganisms include bacteria that are passed on from mothers to their offspring.

 

These types of bacteria are known as endosymbionts and can have a whole range of effects on their hosts.

 

These may include effects that help the host, like the provision of nutrition to cells and protecting the host cells against viruses. But they also have more dubious results—including killing the host's embryos and changing the sex ratio of offspring the host produces.

 

When the endosymbionts are detrimental to the host, the host genome might evolve to block these effects. This can lead to an evolutionary "arms race" between the host and its bacterial endosymbiont.

 

Our research team has now uncovered a remarkably complex example of processes like this in an endemic Australian fly known as Drosophila pseudotakahashii, which is common along the east coast of Australia.

 

Our work, published in the journal PLOS Biology, initially found that all members of this fly carry an endosymbiont bacteria known as Wolbachia, which is passed from the mother to their offspring.

 

When we use antibiotics to cure flies of this Wolbachia strain, the flies survive. However, in any mating that takes place between males that were infected by Wolbachia and females that no longer carry the infection—the offspring of these females die.

This results in an enormous advantage to the females that carry the infection because they are not sterilized by infected males.

 

This whole situation is made more complicated by the fact that a second Wolbachia strain exists that can infect flies alongside the first strain.

 

When the second strain is present, female flies only produce female offspring—making it effectively a "male-killer."

 

In some cases, this might benefit the flies by reducing competition for resources and helping them to avoid inbreeding. But male-killers can mean a big cost for the fly, because flies cannot produce offspring without mating.

 

In the absence of males, the fly population would become extinct.

 

So, this sets up another arms race where the host must evolve a way of suppressing the male-killer bacteria.

 

In Drosophila pseudotakahashii, we saw this arms race in action, producing very rapid changes in a specific region of the fly's genome—which is the complete set of DNA (genetic material) in an organism.

 

And the genome began to win.

 

Over a few weeks, the fly populations with the male-killer bacteria were able to start producing males again, despite the presence of the second Wolbachia strain. And we were able to identify some genes that are likely to be involved in this "male-killer suppression."

 

Our local fly species can provide us with a lesson in the complex nature of interactions between hosts and microorganisms that shape many aspects of an organism's life. Moreover, it illustrates the ongoing evolutionary changes that can happen very quickly to alter these internal interactions.

 

But these specific lessons have broader implications as we look toward manipulating the microbiome of organisms to encourage beneficial effects.

 

For instance, Wolbachia strains living inside mosquitoes are being deliberately spread around the world because the bacteria can actually block the transmission of some mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue Fever.

 

But what if the host's genome evolves to stop these effects? Or what if bacteria that kill males could be released to suppress pest populations?

 

We are at the start of a journey when it comes to microorganisms and the more we learn, the more we need to expect the unexpected.

The Brief: As Prosecutors Pursue Their Lame Cases Against Trump, His Support Rises

 

If liberal Democrats are trying to elect Donald Trump to a second term, they are succeeding.

 

The more they threaten to prosecute the former president on trumped up charges, the more his poll numbers rise as his base of support rallies to his defense. What’s behind the boomerang effect? All of the threatened criminal cases are transparently political, not legal.

 

Americans can plainly see this, and they resent liberal prosecutors interfering in elections by trying to knock out a leading candidate for the highest office in the land. Voters choose presidents, not prosecutors with a partisan agenda who are pursuing legally lame charges.

 

There are three pending cases aimed at Trump. Let’s take a closer look at each.

 

New York DA Alvin Bragg’s Asinine Case

 

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his predecessor devoted unlimited resources to scour Trump’s personal and business records. Failing to find evidence of a crime, the DA simply dreamed one up. But his legal theory of supercharging a dubious misdemeanor into a felony is not supported by the law, making his case not just absurd but pathetic.

 

The so-called “second crime” is a supposed campaign finance violation. But the law does not permit him to do that. A local prosecutor cannot charge a federal crime. And he can’t charge a state campaign crime because it was a federal election. Either way, the statute of limitations ran out long ago. So, this is simply a fabricated case that is politically driven.

 

If unclear the Manhattan DA is foolish enough to proceed with his planned grand jury indictment, Bragg will pay a price.

 

First, sources say there’s an internal revolt within the DA’s office by senior experienced prosecutors who are accusing Bragg of engineering the prosecution of a non-crime that is unsupported by the law and any credible evidence. Second, the grand jury itself may now recognize that Bragg snookered them by endorsing a lying witness, Michael Cohen, and hiding exculpatory evidence —which is both sneaky and reprehensible. It’s the kind of stuff for which lawyers get disbarred.

 

Only an incredibly dumb prosecutor blinded by his hatred of Trump would endorse Michael Cohen as a reliable or trustworthy witness. Among the many crimes to which he pleaded guilty was perjury. Cohen is one of the most disreputable and disgusting people you will ever meet. His name is synonymous with sleaze and dishonesty. It is mystifying how Bragg doesn’t comprehend this. Any half-decent lawyer will easily shred Cohen on cross-examination, leaving Bragg to look like the fool that he is.

 

The Department of Justice looked at the Stormy Daniels payment and concluded there was no crime. So did the Federal Election Commission. Why? Because the payment did not constitute a campaign contribution. All you have to do is read the law. It’s obvious.

 

But Bragg has apparently convinced himself that he can be a hero among progressives and Democrats by prosecuting Trump. Instead, history will write that he was an incompetent buffoon. The case will never stand up to the expected legal challenges.

 

It’s obvious that Trump was targeted for purely political reasons. Amazingly, Bragg’s now-former assistant DA openly admitted it in an ill-advised book that he published. Mark Pomerantz vented his hatred of Trump and reasoned that he had to be stopped because the former president “posed a real danger to the country and to the ideals that mattered to me.”

 

It’s the duty of a prosecutor to see that justice is done fairly and equitably. Disagreeing with someone’s political views or harboring personal animosity is not a basis for criminal prosecution. Indeed, it is a serious breach of legal ethics that merits disbarment.

 

Bragg and Pomerantz should be the subjects of a legal proceeding, not Trump.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis’ Anemic Case

 

Like Bragg, Georgia district attorney Fani Willis vowed to nail Trump before she ever assumed office. She made it the centerpiece of her campaign. She had no access to evidence, mind you. She knew nothing about the case. But she preordained the outcome by promising to lock him up. This, too, constitutes an egregious breach of the cannon of ethics that governs prosecutors.

 

Once elected, Willis convened a special purpose grand jury headed by a giddy foreperson, Emily Kohrs, who suffered diarrhea of the mouth in a bizarre sequence of media interviews. At the time, I wrote this: “She (Kohrs) acted like a vapid and immature teenager who was smiling, gushing, laughing, and joking about a very serious legal proceeding. Batshit crazy noted some on social media. I don’t disagree. I know ten-year-olds with more brains and maturity. Kohrs made a mockery of our justice system.”

 

If Trump is indicted in Georgia, you can expect the defense to make an immediate motion to dismiss based on grand jury impropriety and bias. Kohrs managed to taint the jury pool, not to mention the evidence.

 

As for the law, Willis claims that Trump somehow solicited Georgia government officials to commit fraud in the 2020 election when he asked them to investigate voting irregularities. Given the paucity of evidence, that is an exceedingly difficult charge to prove.

 

Complaining about a rigged election and the suspected shredding of ballots in two phone calls to the Secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, is not enough. Nor is it a crime for a candidate to request that votes be “re-examined” because he needed to “find” 11,780 votes —the amount by which he lost.

 

To bring a legitimate charge, Willis would have to prove that Trump “commanded” an official to commit a crime that would alter an election. However, offering an opinion is not the same thing as demanding that someone fabricate votes. The statute requires a showing of specific intent. That is, Trump “willfully and knowingly” intended to violate the election laws.

 

Good luck proving that. The former president’s two telephone calls simply don’t show it.

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s Inflated Case

 

It’s bad enough that Biden’s Attorney General has been running a protection racket for the many influence peddling schemes that netted the president’s family tens of millions of dollars from malign foreign adversaries such as China and Russia. The AG didn’t bat an eye when the FBI pressured social media companies into censoring and suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story in advance of the 2020 election.

 

It’s equally bad that Garland ordered the FBI to treat vocal parents at school board meetings as domestic terrorists, to spy on Catholics, and to target pro-life activists while refusing to pursue abortion activists who commit crimes. Protesters were allowed to threaten conservative Supreme Court Justices outside their homes with no criminal charges, despite clear violations of federal law.

 

But all of that pales in comparison to Garland’s grandest political ploy. He assigned a special counsel, Jack Smith, to investigate Trump over the events of January 6th, as well as the alleged classified documents imbroglio at Mar-a-Lago that triggered an exaggerated and wholly unmerited FBI raid.

 

There is no evidence whatsoever that supports a charge that Trump incited violence on January 6, 2021, or that he was involved in an insurrection conspiracy. In his speech at the National Mall, Trump encouraged his supporters to let their voices be heard but cautioned them to behave peacefully. Under no construction of the law did he advocate imminent violence which the incitement statute and case law demand.

 

As for the classified documents dispute, Trump insists he declassified the records before he departed office. The law affords him unfettered discretion to do so. If the materials at his residence were no longer classified, then he has not run afoul of the law.

 

As I have written before, the Trump records are little more than a dispute over the custody of papers that is governed exclusively by the Presidential Records Act of 1978. This controlling statute is civil, not criminal. The proper remedy for Garland was to seek a return of the contested documents by filing a motion in civil court and allow an impartial judge to resolve any conflict.

 

It is not obstruction of justice for Trump to assert his rights under the Presidential Records Act. After all, that is precisely what Bill Clinton did in a similar case a decade ago. At the time, the Justice Department argued that a former president can keep whatever documents he wants, and the government has no authority to seize them.

 

Trump was following the same standard enunciated by the DOJ and endorsed by both the National Archives and a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

 

Moreover, Trump invited the FBI to take whatever records it wanted. A warrant was unnecessary and abusive. But Garland chose to criminalize a civil statute that contains no criminal recourse. Senior officials at the FBI correctly objected to the raid, but the attorney general overruled them and ordered a phalanx of armed FBI agents to descend on Trump’s home.

 

As it is with district attorneys Bragg and Willis, the pursuit of Trump by Garland is about politics, not the law. The true intent is to bludgeon Trump with the cudgel of investigations and threatened prosecutions.

 

Yet, the unintended consequence is that Trump is gaining even more support by those who see these prosecutors as transparently corrupt and abusive.

Funny thing. The same mistake was made with Jack Ruby shooting Oswald. The shooters shoes were different than the perps booking shoes.

Now, Ruby was not issued regulation shoes. His shoes were not confiscated, and we know that because there are no shoes on his property invoice. Democrats in the Colorado House of Representatives invoked a rule to limit debate on gun control legislation over the weekend and passed three bills on the matter.

 

The Democratic-controlled chamber invoked Rule 14 to limit debate on Saturday. The rule allows for debate to be stopped an hour after a motion to end debate is made and after an affirmative vote of a majority of members.

 

House Speaker Julie McCluskie, D-Dillon, and Majority Leader Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, issued a statement on the Republicans' efforts to block the legislation.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Several river barges broke loose from a tow boat on the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday, with three barges pinned against the lower McAlpine Dam site, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a statement.

 

The lock chambers at the McAlpine Locks and Dam - on the Ohio River at mile 606.8 - were closed to river traffic due to the "navigation accident, which occurred approximately at 2 a.m. EDT" Tuesday, the Army Corps said.

 

"Three barges are pinned against the lower dam site, one barge is pinned against the Louisville and Indiana bridge pier and all other barges were recovered by other vessels in the local area," according to the statement.

 

No injuries were reported and all personnel were accounted for, said the Army Corps, which noted it is working with the U.S. Coast Guard, navigation industry and marine surveyors on the recovery effort.

 

The Army Corps said the locks will remain closed until the barges on the dam are stabilized.

 

Officials with the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and the U.S. Army Corps could not immediately be reached for comment.

Last month, the governor vetoed SB 1184 which would have eliminated rental tax, and today she vetoed SB 1063 which would have eliminated sales tax on groceries.

 

Over the past year, food prices have skyrocketed between 15% and 45% on many items Arizonans rely on to feed their families. Data shows that a family of four on a low-cost grocery budget currently spends about $1,000 per month on food. Right now, 65 cities and towns within Arizona levy a sales tax of up to 4% on food for home consumption.

 

“This veto is a disgraceful windfall for cities and an absolute gouge for families,” said Majority Leader Sonny Borrelli who sponsored the bill. “We’re not only paying inflated prices to feed our families, but we’re also paying more in taxes as the cost of food rises. Food is not a luxury; it is a necessity. A tax on our groceries is regressive and hurts everyone. Over the next four fiscal years, cities and towns are estimated to receive an average of $2.3 billion per year in state-shared revenues, which is an increase of S844 million more than the average for the last four fiscal years. And yet the governor vetoed this bill, only padding cities’ bloated budgets instead of leaving more money in the wallets of hardworking taxpayers.”

 

“Senate Republicans have been working toward introducing legislation necessary to provide financial relief to all Arizonans, especially low-income families who are feeling the tremendous burden of inflation,” said Senate President Warren Petersen. “It’s very clear the governor has no interest in helping with that financial burden.”

WASHINGTON (AFNS) – Delivering a unified and unambiguous message, the Department of the Air Force’s highest-ranking civilian and military leaders told Congress March 28 that progress is being made modernizing the Air and Space Forces, but to fully succeed Congress must pass the budget on-time so critical “transformation” is not delayed.

 

To properly modernize and transform both the Air Force and Space Force to meet real-world threats, “the Department of the Air Force needs timely authorizations and appropriations,” Secretary Frank Kendall told the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

 

“The (Department of the Air Force) is ready to move forward with the next generation of capabilities we need, and there is no time to lose,” he told lawmakers on a key subcommittee responsible for crafting and helping to pass into law the annual spending bill providing funds to the Air Force and Space Force.

 

Kendall’s request was echoed by Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., and Chief of Space Operations, Gen. Chance Saltzman. All three took part in a hearing before the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.

 

The hearing was the first major step in a lengthy, annual process that yields a new spending plan for the Department. As designed, the process is expected to finish by October 1 when the new fiscal year begins. But because of complexities in policy and political disagreements that deadline has often been missed in recent years, forcing Congress to enact temporary, short-term budgets known as “continuing resolutions” or CRs. A CR maintains spending at levels from the previous year’s budget but it also prohibits spending on new or substantially revised programs and projects.

 

That restriction is troublesome, Kendall, Brown and Saltzman told lawmakers because the Department’s budget request contains nearly two dozen new programs designed specifically to add equipment and capabilities necessary to address challenges posed by strategic competitors like China and Russia.

 

“An on-time budget will continue the change required to address both today’s and tomorrow’s national security threats,” Brown told lawmakers. “We must fulfill our sacred duty of providing our Airmen with the tools they need to be successful.”

 

Later in the hearing, in response to a question, Kendall warned lawmakers of the consequences if the budget is not enacted on time and ready by the start of the fiscal year. “I can’t overstate how devastating it would be,” he said.

 

“We have got to stay ahead of the threat; our deterrent capability depends on that and our ability to prevail depends on that. It would be utterly devastating to the Department; it would have a lot of negative impacts across the board,” Kendall said.

 

Brown, in responding to the same question, said, “It would be a step backwards … That’s not the place we need to be with our pacing challenge. Our goal is to stay ahead of the pacing challenge, not chase the pacing challenge.”

Saltzman, in his opening remarks, made a similar point.

 

“This budget request is designed to deliver the forces, personnel, and partnerships the Space Force requires to preserve U.S. advantages in space,” Saltzman told the subcommittee, referring to the Space Force’s $30 billion budget request. “ … But only if the Congress passes timely appropriations.”

 

The Department’s $215.1 billion budget request, Kendall told the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, includes “approximately 20 completely new or significantly rescoped program elements … that we must develop, produce, and field if we desire to maintain the air and space superiority that America and our allies have counted on for decades.”

 

The budget proposal submitted to Congress March 13 includes $185.1 billion for the Air Force and $30 billion for the Space Force. If enacted into law as proposed, the Department's overall budget would grow by $9.3 billion beyond last year’s enacted budget.

 

As he has frequently emphasized, Kendall told lawmakers again that the budget proposal was designed to ensure the Air and Space Forces remain formidable, that they allow the services to evolve to ensure that deterrence is maintained and, specifically, to transform the Air and Space Forces so they can meet the primary security challenge – “China, China, China.”

 

He mentioned that the budget is the result of “difficult choices,” but that it advances the most critical programs and goals.

 

“For the strategic triad, we have fully funded the Sentinel ICBM, the B-21 Raider bomber, and our nuclear command and control programs. For the conventional force, we are increasing production of both the F-35 and the F-15EX,” he said.

 

He noted that the budget includes funding for the Next Generation Air Dominance Program and for further developing uncrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft. He mentioned as well a focus on “continuing the acquisition of sensor programs like the E-7 and the new resilient Missile Warning and Tracking space system.” The proposal also includes funding for a 5.2 percent raise for Airmen and Guardians, the highest in history, as well as additional funding to improve dormitories and other facilities important for quality of life.

 

All of these “choices” he told lawmakers, move the Air Force and Space Force “into the future.”

c. The Volag pockets 25 percent of every transportation loan it collects from refugees it “sponsors”.

 

d. All Volag expenses and overhead in the Washington, DC HQ are paid by the U.S. government.

 

e. For their refugee programs, Volags collect money from all federal grant programs – “Marriage Initiative,” “Faith-based,” “Ownership Society etc., as well as from various state and local grants.

The ultimate goal of this bill, which a San Francisco lawyer dubbed ‘state sanctioned kidnapping,’ is to send gender confused children to a shelter where they will be brainwashed into taking puberty blockers.

 

California’s Assembly Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved the bill to allow children to enroll in the group homes without any claims of abuse or neglect.

 

“For LGBTQ+ youth, the rejection from parents, harassment in school, and the overall LGBTQ negativity present in society can lead to depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol use, and other negative outcomes. Over one-half of surveyed LGBTQ+ youth reported that not being able to get permission from their parents or guardians was sometimes or always a barrier to accessing mental health services,” the bill reads.

 

The bill will now head to the full Assembly for a vote.
