"The UN Security Council on Monday rejected a Russia-backed resolution calling for an international independent investigation into the blasts that severely damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines last autumn. Russian diplomats suggested that the outcome of the vote was the result of diplomatic pressure exerted by the West on other countries.

 

The draft resolution, which sought to establish an international independent commission to look into “all aspects of the act of sabotage” of the pipelines that directly linked Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea, as well as identify the attack’s sponsors and organizers, was supported by three countries (Russia, China, and Brazil). No country voted against the document, with 12 abstentions, resulting in the resolution being rejected.

 

Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow’s Permanent Representative to the UN, remarked that after the vote “the suspicion [about] who stands behind the sabotage at the Nord Stream will but increase.”

 

Last month, renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersh released a bombshell report accusing the US of having orchestrated the attack on the pipelines. While Washington has denied responsibility, last week Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he “fully agrees” with the reporter’s conclusions."

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tells Just the News that he has doubts about the validity of many of the Democrat-led January 6 committee findings after learning that the panel falsely accused a GOP congressman last year of leading a pre-attack surveillance mission after being told the evidence actually vindicated the lawmaker.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), the chairman of the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee, is planning to release evidence later this week showing House Democrats last year had Justice Department information, videotaped evidence and witness testimony that contradicted their high-profile and later debunked claim he helped Jan. 6 defendants case the Capitol a day before the riot.

McCarthy, who has authorized the release of all the Capitol security footage from the attack, said he is aware of the evidence that Loudermilk will be releasing and found it troubling that the committee led by then-Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and since-defeated Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) were willing to tar a sitting member of Congress when knowing the evidence showed he was innocent.

"This is really why I'm all about transparency," McCarthy said in an interview aired Monday night on the "Just the News, No Noise" television show on the Real America's Voice network. "I'm trying to put everything out. Because everything I look at what the Jan. 6 committee did, they tried to put it in a scope of their own eyes, their own view where they wouldn't even let Republicans on the committee.

"Then they tried to blame Barry Loudermilk for something he didn't do, because Republicans weren't on the committee. But we proved that it's not true. They said he led a tour over in the Capitol. He never went in the Capitol the day before."

McCarthy was asked whether he was certain the Democrat-led Jan. 6 committee knew the allegations they made last spring against Loudermilk were false even before they leveled them. "They knew," he said. "I know they knew. And the one thing after they made that accusation we had [recently retired Rep.] Rodney Davis go out and show the tape, and even the Capitol Police came forward to the Sergeant at Arms and said this isn't true. Why didn't they recant that? … They told them ahead of time.

"And so what happens in these situations, something like that, it puts into question everything else they have said."

McCarthy said he has found other contradictions in the claims the Democrat-led committee made last year, including the amount of video footage that was available from the event.

"They told us in the beginning there's only 14,000 hours of tape," he said. "There's more than 40,000 hours of tape."

Earlier this month, the speaker authorized a full-scale review of the Jan. 6 panel's work to uncover other falsehoods or security issues that should be addressed by the new GOP House majority. He named Loudermilk and his subcommittee to lead the inquiry.

In a statement to Just the News on Monday evening, Loudermilk said he will be releasing evidence this week showing that the Jan. 6 committee had information from federal agents, videotapes and witnesses showing he was innocent before they even made the accusation.

"The Subcommittee on Oversight has uncovered evidence that proves the Jan. 6 committee knew I did not lead a group of visitors on a reconnaissance tour of the Capitol on Jan. 5, and that every single one of the visitors with me that day were innocent," he said. "Unfortunately, the Jan. 6 Committee decided to ignore the facts to fit a political narrative. As chairman of the subcommittee, I promise we will separate fact from fiction."

Loudermilk's saga with the Jan. 6 committee exploded into public view last May when Thompson and Cheney sent him a letter asking him to testify and directly suggesting he might have led a reconnaissance tour with Jan. 6 attackers to case the Capitol a day ahead of the riot.

"Based on our review of evidence in the Select Committee's possession, we believe you have information regarding a tour you led through parts of the Capitol complex on January 5, 2021," the letter charged. "Public reporting and witness accounts indicate some individuals and groups engaged in efforts to gather information about the layout of the U.S. Capitol, as well as the House and Senate office buildings" in advance of the insurrection, they wrote.

Loudermilk directly denied the allegation, calling it a "smear job" and saying he simply gave a tour of adjacent House office buildings to constituents.

Months later, the Capitol Police backed Loudermilk's story, saying they exhaustively investigated the claims and debunked the notion that Loudermilk led attackers on a pre-attack reconnaissance tour.

"There is no evidence that Representative Loudermilk entered the U.S. Capitol with this group on January 5, 2021," Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger wrote in a letter to Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), the then-ranking Republican on the House Administration Committee. "We train our officers on being alert for people conducting surveillance or reconnaissance, and we do not consider any of the activities we observed as suspicious."

Thompson is declining to offer Loudermilk an apology. "We concluded our works, and we move on," Thompson told NBC News. "… All he had to do was come and testify before the committee, and we could have cleared it up."

Loudermilk suggested Thompson seems to be unaware of the Capitol Police letter that cleared him. "It amazes me that the Chairman of the J6 Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), was not aware of the Capitol Police letter clearing me of the 'reconnaissance tour' lie their committee manufactured," he tweeted in recent days.

McCarthy told Just the News he believes the best way for Congress to resolve the many lingering questions about Jan. 6 is to release all the evidence, not the curated facts the Democrats put in their final report.

"That's what creates so much problem," he said. "That's why transparency is the best way to go. That's why they should have handled it in a transparent manner. Let both sides be a part of it. Let the truth come out."

Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, suggested in an interview with RIA Novosti that theWest had been pressuring other countries over the vote. “I think that all the others were somewhat afraid to support us out in the open.”

 

Western countries, he added, “made it absolutely clear that they are not interested in a vote that would support the Russian position.”

 

Commenting on the resolution’s rejection, US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood claimed that the Russia-backed draft “was not an attempt to seek the truth” but rather sought “to discredit the work” of ongoing investigations by Sweden, Denmark, and Germany and “prejudice any conclusions” these countries might reach.

 

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also weighed in, saying that an investigation into the sabotage “will directly harm” the US and its allies, as it threatens to reveal the truth about the incident.

Politicians sometimes find it hard to persuade their electorates of the value of international aid. Opponents argue that charity should begin at home. But new research shows that the national interest could be best served by a public-spirited approach that meets real needs.

 

The 2019 Principled Aid Index, compiled by the London-based think tank Overseas Development Institute (ODI), also found that the most generous donor countries also tend to be the most principled in the way they give aid.

 

The index assesses the 30 rich nations who make up the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) against three criteria: the extent to which their aid is targeted at actual need; the degree to which it contributes to addressing problems that can only be solved by global cooperation; and how little of the aid is tied to the donor’s commercial or strategic interests.

Using this approach, Luxembourg is rated the most principled aid donor, followed closely by the UK and Sweden. Ireland and Norway complete the top five nations in the index. Italy is the lowest performing G7 country in the rankings at number 20 while the US, where the administration is reviewingUS aid priorities, ranks at number nine.

ODI says that donors actually serve their national interest better by not tying aid to their own priorities. Principled aid, it argues, alleviates suffering and achieves global development goals, which makes the world safer and more prosperous.

 

All of the top three nations meet or exceed the UN’s recommended level of 0.7% of gross national income for official development aid (ODA). Denmark, which also exceeds the UN aid target, came 11th in the rankings because of a low score on the global cooperation measure.

 

The report noted that the four DAC donors from the Asia Pacfic area all ranked in the lower half of the table due to their strong regional focus even though they scored well on global cooperation. ODI says donors should prioritise aid that complies with the principled aid goals and avoids “short-termism, self-regard and unilateralism”.

 

Last year the OECD warned that aid from DAC donors had levelled off and in some cases fallen dramatically. For example, Spain’s economic crisis had reduced its ODA from 0.46% of GNI in 2009 to 0.19% in 2017. But non-OECD donors such as China and the UAE were making up some of the shortfall.

Despite growing pains, Vanderbilt’s Clinic for Transgender Health is forging new paths forward

Tennessee isn’t exactly the epicenter of the transgender vanguard. Just ask any activist fighting the state’s antiquated, discriminatory birth certificate laws, which prohibit trans people born in Tennessee from correcting the gender marked on their birth certificates.

 

But with Vanderbilt’s transgender services, new paths forward for individuals undergoing gender transition are being forged here in Nashville. Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Clinic for Transgender Health opened in August 2018, shoehorned though its caseload is into overbooked Friday slots at a forlorn storefront clinic in a Bellevue strip mall. The grand plan? A one-stop shop for Nashville’s transgender needs, from hormone-replacement therapy to consultations about top surgery — the blanket nomenclature for surgeries that reconstruct a transgender person’s chest. (So-called bottom surgery is the procedure by which a person’s genitals are altered to match their gender identity.)

 

The initial rollout was mostly bare-bones. As news of the transgender clinic spread, grumblings about six-month wait times reached fever pitch on various Facebook transgender forums. (As of press time, the clinic has since expanded its hours, with the next available appointment slots being late January 2020.)

 

A smattering of offerings exist outside the Vanderbilt system for people without insurance, including Connectus Health and My House. As the Trump administration tinkered with Planned Parenthood’s funding earlier this year, questions arose about the future of the clinic’s informed-consent policy around hormone-replacement therapy. Also this year, there was a sudden surge of panic after lower-income provider and nurse practitioner Alice Sattler left town. But Rager Health’s Dr. Kristin Rager — an adolescent specialist — recently expanded her clinic to serve patients up to age 30 affected by Sattler’s departure. What’s more, Nashville Mayor John Cooper’s press secretary Chris Song confirms that his boss is interested in continuing initiatives from the Briley administration of extending coverage of gender-confirmation surgery to transgender Metro employees.

 

The question raised by the growing pains involved with Nashville’s nascent transgender medical industrial complex:How does a lower-income person planning for a gender transition obtain services outside of Vanderbilt’s near-monopoly and occasionally impersonal third-party answering service? “When a parent calls, they get me and only me,” Rager Health practice manager Michael Reding tells the Scene. “They’re not going to get a call center or a random employee.”

 

Be that as it may, transgender Nashvillians will be seeing a lot more of Vanderbilt’s Clinic for Transgender Health in the years to come. With new hire Dr. Julian Winocour’s first Vanderbilt vaginoplasty scheduled this month, Vanderbilt’s full-time LGBTQ Health program manager Del Ray Zimmerman has racked up a few successes: He’s helped overhaul Vanderbilt’s burdensome phone and technology system to cut down on flagrant misgenderings from nonplussed receptionists, and in December, Zimmerman will meet with outside consultants about ramping up the transgender clinic’s services.ind

 

The Scene recently spoke with Zimmerman about the future of the clinic, health care options for transgender Nashvillians and more.

 

In talking with transgender people for this story, there was a general concern from people without insurance utilizing some of the services.

 

That’s just a pretty standard Vanderbilt rule. It has nothing to do with the program. At the same time, Vanderbilt provides more uncompensated care. We have to fall in line with how the rules are and how they’re laid out. It does get difficult for uninsured and under-insured patients to access services. One of the things we help folks with is navigating other services outside of our system. If a patient calls us looking to start hormone therapy without insurance, we’ll give them the names and numbers of folks they can call to get set up with sliding-scale fees.

What about the patient who has Affordable Care Act or TennCare coverage? How are they billed differently, and what would be the key differences in how that transition would look?

 

Folks are picking up products associated with Cigna and Blue Cross Blue Shield through the [health insurance] exchange. It is impossible for our program to keep up with all of the insurance plans’ levels and packages. More generally, those companies are on board to be more transgender-inclusive. It depends on the kinds of products people buy. Vanderbilt doesn’t readily accept adult TennCare products. That’s another hiccup in the system. There are some ways that patients can request authorizations. It depends on the powers that be and how they judge the medical necessity around it. The inner workings in how to get those authorizations are still pretty complex. Unfortunately, our insurance system has a lot of problems that negatively affect LGBTQ patients.

 

Would you say the authorization codes are a common hiccup transgender patients are having with Vanderbilt? And how would you advise them on that?

 

With the advent of bottom surgery at Vanderbilt, we’re seeing new things for the first time. I’m seeing more complexities with patients who have resources. Unfortunately, it’s harder for me to give advice because each patient has some sort of financial relationship with their insurer. If there were errors being made in processing between our [plastic surgery] clinic and carriers, there are back-office things that clinic staff can do to mitigate problems as they submit. On the front end, there’s a contractual relationship between the patient and insurer. That makes it difficult.

 

Are there internal guidelines for the pricing decisions made at Vanderbilt?

 

On one level, it’s unethical to quote prices up front. From one patient to another, you have anatomical considerations. As people are needing to budget, I’m looking to give ballpark figures based on anecdotal information. For top surgery, you’re looking from anywhere from $4,000 to $9,000. In terms of bottom surgery, I can’t give a ballpark, because there aren’t any precedents set at this point. Once Dr. Winocour and Dr. [Salam A.] Kassis have surgeries under their belts, I will have a better understanding of what I can tell patients.

 

In talking to doctors, they mentioned the extensive staff training involved and how that impacts wait times for surgery. For staffers who aren’t aware of transgender patients, are longer training sessions needed? What’s some of the language used to finesse their transgender awareness?

 

It’s typically on an ad hoc basis. I have two emails in my inbox today looking for training. With the transgender procedures rollout, we’ve intentionally gone in and trained hundreds of staffers. We walk people through some basic LGBTQ cultural competency. We really hit the point home that sexual orientation and gender identity are not the same thing, because people often conflate them. We spend a concerted amount of time on how to talk to transgender people with respectful language, how pronouns are important, and the hiccups that exist today in our electronic health records and how that can negatively impact the transgender patient.

That’s something the transgender patients we’ve interviewed noticed. It seems like the electronic health records are now more consistent, and the misgenderings have lessened.

 

We’ve certainly had plenty more opportunities lately to take our training on the road. We’re kind of busting at the seams right now in turns of the opportunities that have been presented to us. If people are benefiting from that, I would hope that’s a result of our training. In our front desk positions, we have higher turnover. Staff training should be ongoing. Once we roll out new protocols in our electronic health records, we’re also going to do new training on inputting data. We’ll have a more seamless system over time. That has broader ramifications. When we make these improvements for transgender folks, everyone actually benefits. I use myself as an example. I use my first and middle name. If you just use my first name, it makes me feel like I’m 5 years old. If I have the opportunity to put that, I use “Del Ray,” and it shows up every time I call, then I benefit from the impetus we’re using to make these changes.

 

That brings me to my next question. People have said that receptionists at Vanderbilt’s Bill Wilkerson Voice Clinic sometimes work with patients to schedule appointments on the fly, whereas other clinics have an impersonal third-party answering service. Is there anything being done about the uniformity and management across the board?

 

When we launched in August 2018, we got permission to start with a half-day of service. That’s four hours of patients’ appointments. As you can imagine, the schedule filled up pretty quickly, and we had a six-month waiting list. We got permission to expand the clinical offerings to a full day of service, and that’s helpful with some of the wait times. We have a lot of transgender people trying to access the system. What we’re trying to build is a solid foundation. We started small, and we’re continuing to build out. We put ourselves on the map, and a lot of transgender people are trying to connect with service.

 

On one hand, that’s a really great problem to have. On the other hand, we have a logjam in the system, and we’ve got to fix it. From the beginning, we wanted that one-stop shop, and have different providers weaving into one clinic. You’d have an appointment for hormone-replacement therapy and schedule a surgeon in the same visit. We’re just not there yet. Several high-level department chairs have gotten together to shore up resources to bring down consultants from cities with more established transgender clinics. At 9:57 a.m., a former middle school basketball teammate of Audrey Hale looked at her phone to find a message from The Covenant School shooter on Instagram.

Averianna Patton said she saw the message that Hale planned to die by suicide and that Patton would see it on the news. In the messages Patton provided to NewsChannel 5, Hale told Patton she would see her again in another life. Hale told Patton about no longer wanting to live and the need to die.

"One day this will make more sense," Hale wrote. "I've left behind more than enough evidence behind. But something bad is about to happen."

The Covenant School — a private Christian School in Green Hills — experienced a mass shooting on Monday, when students and staff died on the campus. Three children died and three staff members died.

Hale said family had no idea what was about to happen.

"I tried to comfort and encourage her and subsequently reached out to the Suicide Prevention Help Line after being instructed to by my father at 10:08 am. Audrey has shared with others that she had been suicidal in the past and I knew to take this serious," Patton said to NewsChannel 5.

Patton said she called the Nashville Davidson County Sheriff's Office at 10:13 a.m. to make them aware of the situation and was instructed to call Nashville's non-emergency number.

"I called Nashville's non-emergency line at 10:14 a.m. and was on hold for nearly seven minutes before speaking with someone who said that they would send an officer to my home. An officer did not come to my home until 3:29 p.m.," Patton said.

Patton said she wanted to come forward about this circumstance because she believed more urgency should have happened when she reached out to officials for help.

"After phone calls from friends and Audrey's name was released as the shooter at Covenant Nashville school, I learned that Audrey was the shooter and that she had reached out to me prior to the shooting," Patton said. "My heart is with all of the families affected and I'm devastated by what has happened."

FIRST ON FOX: Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett called for the manifesto by the transgender shooter at the private Presbyterian school in Nashville to be made public.

 

"Our trans youth are troubled," Burchett told Fox News Digital in a late Monday statement. "If they don't get the help they need they can grow up to have some serious issues, but I obviously don't believe they'll all grow up to be shooters like this."

 

"We need to know what was going through this person's head, and the manifesto should be made public," the Tennessee Republican continued.

 

The horrific tragedy that stunned the nation on Monday began when a 28-year-old female - who identified as a transgender man - entered the Covenant School carrying "assault-type rifles" and a handgun, authorities said. Covenant is a small, private Presbyterian school in Nashville with students ranging from pre-school to sixth grade.

 

Three children and three adults that included the head of the school were killed in the attack. The shooter, Nashville resident Audrey Elizabeth Hale, was killed by police.

 

Nashville police Chief John Drake said Hale appeared to have prepared for the shooting, noting that investigators found a written manifesto.

 

"We have also determined that there were maps drawn of the school in detail of surveillance entry points. At one point she was a student at that school," he said. "There was a vehicle nearby that gave us a clue as to who she was."

 

Police say the shooter entered the building through a side door and fired shots before moving to the second floor, where Hale was confronted by responding officers. They don't believe she was wearing any body armor, authorities said.

 

A search of a Honda Fit driven by Hale to the school campus yielded "additional material," police said. Hale also allegedly fired at responding police vehicles from a second-story window.

 

Hale was armed with two AR-style weapons, including a rifle and pistol, and a handgun. Two of the weapons may have been purchased legally in the Nashville area, Drake said. Investigators were probing a possible theory for a motive but did not disclose any details.

 

Officials at the medical center say three young students were transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt with gunshot wounds. All three were pronounced dead after arrival. The three more adults were also pronounced dead following the attack. All three were staff at the school.

 

The victims were identified by police as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, all age 9, Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and 61-year-old Mike Hill. Koonce was the head of school at Covenant, according to the school's website.

 

The Covenant School is a private Christian institution for students up to 6th grade, according to its website.

Russia succeeds in reorienting oil exports – energy minister

The country has found buyers for all of the supplies at risk of being stranded due to sanctions

 

Moscow has completely redirected all of its oil exports from ‘unfriendly states’ to new markets, Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov stated on Tuesday.

 

According to the minister, supplies are now destined to Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

 

“Already we can state that we have managed to fully redirect the entire volume of exports which initially fell out due to sanctions.There is no decrease in sales,” Shulginov stated.

 

Earlier on Tuesday, the deputy prime minister and former energy minister, Aleksandr Novak, also noted that the volume ofexports to India alone rose by 22 timesin 2022. Russia also became China’s top oil supplier in the first two months of 2023, with delivery volumes in January-February surging 23.8% year-on-year.

 

Late last year, the EU stopped accepting Russian oil transported by sea, while a G7-led coalition imposed a price cap on seaborne Russian crude at $60 a barrel. Russia responded bybanning oil deliveriesto foreign buyers whose contracts mention the price cap.

 

Another round of sanctions came into effect on February 5. Brussels placed an embargo on imports of seaborne Russian oil products, also complemented by a price cap. The limit was set at $100 per barrel for petroleum products trading at a premium to oil and $45 per barrel for those trading at a discount.

 

Despite the sanctions, Russia increased both oil exports and crude production last year, by 7.6% and 2%, respectively. This year, Russian energy companies have beenraising output further, with the average daily production of crude oil and condensate reportedly growing by almost 2% in February compared to the previous month.

The United States became the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter during the first half of 2022, according to data from CEDIGAZ. Compared with the second half of 2021, U.S. LNG exports increased by 12% in the first half of 2022, averaging 11.2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). U.S. LNG exports continued to grow for three reasons—increased LNG export capacity, increased international natural gas and LNG prices, and increased global demand, particularly in Europe.

According to our estimates, installed U.S. LNG export capacity has expanded by 1.9 Bcf/d nominal (2.1 Bcf/d peak) since November 2021. The capacity additions included a sixth train at the Sabine Pass LNG, 18 new mid-scale liquefaction trains at the Calcasieu Pass LNG, and increased LNG production capacity at Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi LNG facilities. As of July 2022, we estimate that U.S. LNG liquefaction capacity averaged 11.4 Bcf/d, with a shorter-term peak capacity of 13.9 Bcf/d.

International natural gas and LNG prices hit record highs in the last quarter of 2021 and first half of 2022. Prices at the Title Transfer Facility (TTF) in the Netherlands have been trading at record highs since October 2021. TTF averaged $30.94 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) during the first half of 2022. LNG spot prices in Asia have also been high, averaging $29.50/MMBtu during the same period.

Since the end of last year, countries in Europe have increasingly imported more LNG to compensate for lower pipeline imports from Russia and to fill historically low natural gas storage inventories. LNG imports in the EU and UK increased by 63% during the first half of 2022 to average 14.8 Bcf/d.

Most U.S. LNG exports went to the EU and the UK during the first five months of this year, accounting for 64%, or 7.3 Bcf/d, of the total U.S. LNG exports. Similar to 2021, the United States sent the most LNG to the EU and UK during the first half of the year, providing 47% of the 14.8 Bcf/d of Europe's total LNG imports, followed by Qatar at 15%, Russia at 14%, and four African countries combined at 17%.

In June, the United States exported 11% less LNG than the 11.4 Bcf/d average exports during the first five months of 2022, mainly as a result of an unplanned outage at the Freeport LNG export facility. Freeport LNG is expected to resume partial liquefaction operations in early October 2022.

Utilization of the peak capacity at the seven U.S. LNG export facilities averaged 87% during the first half of 2022, mainly before the Freeport LNG outage, which is similar to the utilization on average during 2021.

Over 5.5 million refugees entered Russia amid Ukraine conflict – TASS

Kathryn Lueders, associate administrator of NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, announced Monday she will retire from the agency at the end of April. Lueders’ current deputy and astronaut, Ken Bowersox, will become the new head of Space Operations, effective Monday, May 1.

 

“Kathy is a tremendous public servant and a trailblazer, not only serving as the first woman to head space operations for NASA and the first woman to manage our human spaceflight program, but also championing a new way of doing business in low Earth orbit. The public-private commercial model Kathy and her team helped pioneer will return humanity to the Moon and prepare us for our next giant leap: the first crewed missions to Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “Ken has been instrumental to advancing NASA’s goals and missions in low-Earth orbit and beyond, and I know Space Operations will be in good hands under his leadership.”

 

During her 31 years with the agency, Lueders provided strategic guidance for NASA’s human exploration of space, as well as operations that allow the agency to launch science missions to learn about Earth and the universe. Her efforts have helped NASA foster significant change in how it partners with American industry to support and expand research aboard the International Space Station – with crewed and cargo transportation to and from the station.

 

Lueders started her NASA career at the White Sands Test Facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she was the Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System and Reaction Control Systems Depot manager. She quickly demonstrated her engineering expertise, leading her through positions in the International Space Station Program and eventually to serve as manager of the Commercial Crew Program at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida before joining NASA Headquarters in Washington.

 

Her many honors include several NASA achievement awards, the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award, and the Distinguished Service Medal. In addition, she is a 2022 National Academy of Engineering member, a 2020 SpaceNews Government Leader of the Year, an inductee to the 2021 Space and Satellite Hall of Fame, and recipient of the 2021 American Astronomical Society Spaceflight Achievement Award, 2020 Woman in Aerospace Leadership Award, 2022 Space Pioneer Award by the National Space Society, and IAASS’ 2019 Leonardo da Vinci Lifetime Achievement Award.

 

Upon Lueders’ retirement, Bowersox will take lead for the mission directorate. His operations experience includes being acting associate administrator of the former Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, will allow NASA to build on its success in human space exploration.

 

As an astronaut, Bowersox flew five orbital missions for NASA, including two Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions. He served as commander of the sixth expedition at the space station. Following his station mission, Bowersox served as the director of flight operations at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. He also has experience from working with American industry and serving on the NASA Advisory Council as chair of the Human Exploration and Operations Committee.

 

“Kathy and Ken have both dedicated their life’s work to NASA and our nation. I wish Kathy well during her retirement. We know countless individuals at NASA – as well as members of the Artemis Generation – will be inspired by Kathy’s service and countless contributions,” Nelson said.

The Moon may store billions of tons of water trappedinside tiny glass spheresthat form when asteroids hit its surface, according to a new study of lunar soil samples. The samples were retrieved during China’s 2020 robotic Chang’e-5 exploration mission.

 

In the study, which was published by the journal Nature Geoscience on Monday, a team of scientists claimed to have found water inside impact glass beads gathered by the Chang’e-5 lander from lunar soil.

 

The miniscule glass beads, which range in size from just 50 micrometers to one millimeter, usually form when an asteroid or comet crashes into the Moon, sending up molten particles which then cool down and become part of the moonscape.

 

The researchers believe that thebeads fill with water when hit by solar winds, which carry hydrogen and oxygen from the sun across space.

 

“Solar wind-derived water is produced by the reaction of solar hydrogen with oxygen present at the surface of the lunar glass beads,”planetary scientist Sen Hu said.

 

The study also looked at water diffusion processes, estimating that the beads could be refilled with water every few years, suggesting“anefficient water recharge mechanismthat could sustain the lunar surface water cycle.”

 

The scientists estimated that the beads could contain up to 270 billion tons of water.

 

Commenting on the finding, Mahesh Anand, a professor of planetary science and exploration at the Open University, described it as “one of the most exciting discoveries we’ve made,”adding that this makes “the potential for exploring the Moon in a sustainable manner”higher than ever before.

 

The Chang’e-5, which was China’s fifth lunar exploration mission, landed on the Moon in December 2020 and collected almost 2kg of lunar samples before safely returning to Earth later the same month.

 

China has an ambitious lunar programand is working toward staging a landing on the Moon before 2030. Together with Russia, it also plans to establish the International Lunar Research Station, which is expected to become operational by 2035.

 

In January, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson claimed that the world had found itself in “a space race” and recognized that China had achieved “enormous success and advances”in its space program.
