It sped up the death process. They didn't need to break Christ's legs because the death process was quicker.
They didn't always break the legs. Some died before it was necessary. They pierced Christ's side though.
Also, Pilate had Christ beaten (scourged) to within an inch of His life before He was put on the cross. He had done this to try to appease the Jews who demanded he be put to death. The beating probably sped the death process on the cross up quite a bit.
He laid down His Life, and He gave up the Ghost, but the cross was still the mechanism of his execution.
I've heard that it caused the pleural sac to explode.
Of His own will, yes. We agree. He allowed them to put Him on the cross. He could have called 10,000 legions of angels, but He did the Father's will.
It was, and probably still is, the most torturous form of execution. The pain from the pierced feet and hands, lifting up to try to breathe, is unimaginable, but then allowing the body to rest, is suffocating.
Did you know that the Davidic Psalm, Psalm 22, written >1000 years B.C., foreshadows the crucifixion of Christ? David was obviously not a Roman, but crucifixion was an unknown form of execution to the Jews of that day. It was a Roman punishment, and David would not have known of it. Yet he describes it in detail in Psalm 22.
Psalm 22: 7-18
All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
8 โHe trusts in the Lord,โ they say,
โlet the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
since he delights in him.โ
9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you, even at my motherโs breast.
10 From birth I was cast on you;
from my motherโs womb you have been my God.
11 Do not be far from me,
for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.
12 Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted within me.
15 My mouth[d] is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.
16 Dogs surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce[e] my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.
Rush called it the "Drive-by Media".
The Passion of the Christ probably depicts the torture as good as a movie can, but I imagine it was worse than that.
Clap Clap Clap Clap!
I was listening to an hour long advertisement and suddenly some guy interrupted and started talking about random stuff.
Oh? I just thought the Gif was pretty great is all.
Andy Griffith was a flaming lib. Andy Taylor was a Reagan conservative.
So they ran from the crisis when it got too hot? Got it. That's good stock right there. /s/
But you also butchered the Queen's English.
I'm from North Cackalacky so the Andy Griffith Show is kind of a big deal around here; to this day. Probably one of the best shows ever on TV and certainly in my top 5 all time. Love me some King of the Hill, and Moonshiners (F&G I know).
Ernest T. Bass. Don Knotts was way underrated at the time. I saw some documentary about the show and, apparently, there were contract disputes and whatnot that led to Knotts leaving the show. Supposedly, Andy Griffith kept a tight grip on the cast, contracts, etc, and I can believe that.
And the age of consent is 14 there (40 miles south from (you)), last time I heard. Crazy that those laws are still in place.
