HPA axis is the feedback loop regulating serum levels of cortisol. Cortisol is stress hormone. If levels are not sufficient the body does poorly when encouraging physiologic or marked emotional distress.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone. Like all steroid hormones It binds receptor in cell cytoplasm and then enters the cell nucleus. It functions through changing a cells gene expression. mRNA for hundreds of proteins expressed, processed and then sent back to cytoplasm for protein to be made. I do not know it DNA methylation is changed. I sincerely doubt any base-pair changes in the code are made.
