Mexico's president slams U.S. "spying" after 28 Sinaloa cartel members charged, including sons of "El Chapo"

Mexico's president lashed out Monday at what he called U.S. "spying" and "interference" in Mexico, days after U.S. prosecutors announced charges against 28 members of the Sinaloa cartel for smuggling massive amounts of fentanyl into the United States. The three sons of former drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán — known as the "Chapitos" — were among those charged.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador suggested Monday that the case had been built on information gathered by U.S. agents in Mexico, and said "foreign agents cannot be in Mexico."

He called the Sinaloa investigation "abusive, arrogant interference that should not be accepted under any circumstances."

A former top U.S. drug enforcement agent called the president's comments unjustified. Mike Vigil, former head of international operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration, said López Obrador was mistakenly assuming that U.S. agents needed to be in Mexico to collect intelligence for the case. In fact, much of the case appears to have come from trafficking suspects caught in the U.S.

"He wants to completely destroy the working relationship that has taken decades to build," Vigil said. "This is going to translate into more drugs reaching the United States and more violence and corruption in Mexico."

Four Sons of El Chapo Face Sweeping New Charges in Fentanyl Indictments

The charges, in five related cases, offered a panoramic view of how the deadly drug was created, transported and ultimately sold by the Sinaloa cartel on American streets.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Medici

As an Italian vocabulary word, "medici" means "medical doctors" and identifications with the family members as physicians may be found among their names as early as the eleventh century. Fanciful stories depict the images as pills or cupping glasses, a late-medieval medical instrument used to draw blood. Pills did not exist until much later and bloodletting was not a common practice at the time of the first Medici coat of arms. Art historian Rocky Ruggiero suggests plausibly however, that the images may represent whole ripe blood oranges that typically are grown in Italy. Although knowledge of vitamins did not exist at the time, the benefit of oranges for certain diseases was recognized and their association with recommendations by medical doctors suggests to Ruggiero that this likely is the imagery intended in the coats of arms for the Medici family.

Judge denies Bragg’s bid to block House GOP’s subpoena of Mark Pomerantz in NY Trump case

A federal judge on Wednesday ruled that Mark Pomerantz, who was previously involved in the Manhattan district attorney’s criminal investigation of former President Trump, must face a House Judiciary Committee subpoena.

U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil’s 25-page order rejects a request from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) to block House Republicans from questioning Pomerantz, who resigned from Bragg’s office last year.

Vyskocil asked the parties to reach a “mutually agreeable compromise” regarding how Pomerantz’s deposition will proceed. Bragg appealed the ruling minutes later.

“The subpoena was issued with a ‘valid legislative purpose’ in connection with the ‘broad’ and ‘indispensable’ congressional power to ‘conduct investigations.’ It is not the role of the federal judiciary to dictate what legislation Congress may consider or how it should conduct its deliberations in that connection. Mr. Pomerantz must appear for the congressional deposition. No one is above the law,” ruled Vyskocil, a Trump appointee.

House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has sought to investigate Bragg’s criminal prosecution of Trump, subpoenaing Pomerantz and asking another employee to turn over personal emails about his hiring process in recent days.

Bragg last week filed the lawsuit against Jordan to block Pomerantz’s subpoena and Jordan’s other attempts at getting information from prosecutors. Bragg portrayed the investigation as a “transparent campaign to intimidate and attack” his office’s work.

“In our federalist system, elected state and federal actors sometimes engage in political dogfights…The Court does not endorse either side’s agenda. The sole question before the Court at this time is whether Bragg has a legal basis to quash a congressional subpoena that was issued with a valid legislative purpose. He does not,” Vyskocil wrote.

Pomerantz served as one of the Manhattan district attorney’s top prosecutors on the Trump case, ultimately resigning in February 2022 soon after Bragg took office.

Pomerantz has said he resigned over Bragg’s reluctance to seek an indictment of Trump from a grand jury that was sitting at the time.

Late last month, a new grand jury ultimately did return an indictment of Trump, but on a different criminal prong that revolves around a hush payment scheme.

Austin speaks with Israeli defense chief in wake of US document leak

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant last week following the leak of dozens of U.S. classified documents, Axios reported Wednesday.

Two Israeli officials told Axios that Austin and Gallant spoke last Thursday, with Austin reassuring his counterpart that the U.S. government was working to prevent additional leaks in the future. The outlet reported that the call happened after lower-level officials sent messages to reassure Israeli officials of the U.S. commitment to Israel following the leaks.

The Hill has reached out to the Pentagon and Israel’s defense ministry to confirm.

The documents leaked included information about the U.S. conducting spying operations on Israel and an assessment on Israel’s willingness to send military assistance to Ukraine.

Israel has been sending humanitarian aid and nonlethal support, but has sought to maintain a neutral stance in the war.

Israel also denied allegations made in another document that leaders of its Mossad intelligence service had encouraged agency staff and Israeli citizens to participate in March protests against the government’s proposed judicial reforms.

Those protests exploded after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked Gallant as his defense chief, a move he reversed earlier this month.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken maintained on Saturday that cooperation between the U.S. and its allies were not affected by the leaks, and President Biden has said he is not concerned by the contents of the materials.

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said during a press briefing last week that the U.S. was “reaching out” to its allies and partners following the leaks.

A 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, Jack Teixeira, has been arrested in connection with the leak and has been charged with violating the Espionage Act and another law the bans the unauthorized removal of classified documents.

A hearing scheduled for Wednesday to determine whether he should remain jailed while awaiting trial was delayed to give the defense more time to prepare.
