OAKLAND DIOCESE PROTECTS ASSETS BY FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY
Law firm is calling out Oakland's bishop
A California diocese is filing for bankruptcy to allegedly show compassion to survivors of clergy sex abuse, but according to one law firm, the diocese's alleged reason for filing is claptrap.
On Monday, Bp. Michael Barber of the Oakland diocese stated, "We made the filing because we believe this process is the best way to support a compassionate and equitable outcome for survivors of abuse, while ensuring we continue to provide the essential services and support so crucial to our parishioners and communities."
But attorney Jeff Anderson of Jeff Anderson & Associates sees Barber's filing for bankruptcy differently. "The Diocese of Oakland's decision to declare bankruptcy is a calculated decision in hopes to silence and suppress survivors of abuse," he contended.
"Bishop Barber is attempting to keep information from the survivors, the public, and the courts for the dioceses and his own self-interest," Anderson added. "Same old story, hide the offenders, the assets, and the truth about what they knew."
