radio licensing provides a baseline of knowledge that is REQUIRED to properly operate a transmitting radio, receiving is relatively easy. (you) can buy anything you want, and learn how to operate the radio for LISTENING (lurking) first… then get a good book to learn the test questions, which will touch on ALL aspects of the radio hobby.
