Nicola Sturgeon says she is ‘innocent of any wrongdoing’ after arrest in SNP finances investigation

Former first minister is released without charge; MP calls for her suspension from party

Former Scotland first minister Nicola Sturgeon says she is “innocent of any wrongdoing” after she was arrested as part of a criminal investigation into the party’s finances.

Ms Sturgeon, who stepped down from her role in March, was arrested on Sunday morning after meeting police by arrangement. She was released without charge shortly before 5.30pm. In a statement about an hour after her release, she said she was “certain I have committed no offence” and her arrest was “a shock and deeply distressing”. She insisted she would “never do anything” to harm the Scottish National Party (SNP) or Scotland.

Earlier, a SNP MP suggested the party should suspend its former leader. Angus MacNeil, who represents a constituency in the Outer Hebrides in Westminster, said it is time for the SNP to put “some political distance” between it and the “soap opera” of the financial scandal that has engulfed Ms Sturgeon and several people close to her.

Her arrest came two months after the arrest of her husband, the SNP’s former chief executive and one-time top power broker, Peter Murrell. Colin Beattie, a member of the devolved Scottish parliament, quit as SNP treasurer when he was also arrested in April. Both were released without charge.

The investigation concerns the whereabouts of about £660,000 in party donations collected after Brexit from supporters of a new independence referendum, which was never held. The money for a referendum was meant to be ring-fenced, but by 2019 the SNP had less than £100,000 in cash on its balance sheet and the donations have yet to be accounted for.

Members were also not told until recently that the party’s auditors quit 18 months ago. Now all three signatories of the SNP’s most recent filed accounts – Ms Sturgeon, Mr Murrell and Mr Beattie – have all been arrested.

Officers in the investigation, called Operation Branchform, seized a £110,000 luxury motorhome from outside the home of Ms Sturgeon’s mother-in-law in April. They also searched the marital home of Ms Sturgeon and Mr Murrell as well as the SNP’s party headquarters.

The financial scandal has overshadowed the first few months of the tenure of Ms Sturgeon’s replacement as party leader and first minister, Humza Yousaf. Viewed as close to Ms Sturgeon, he won the SNP’s leadership contest largely by promising “continuity” from her regime.

BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show broadcast an interview with Mr Yousaf hours before Ms Sturgeon’s arrest, in which he said he was still in regular contact with her. He said she was in a “good place” and lauded her as one of the best politicians in Europe. He said he could not comment on a live police investigation when asked about Operation Branchform.

Ms Sturgeon has previously denied that the reason she suddenly announced in February she was quitting was related to the investigation into the SNP’s finances, which had been rumbling on in the background since 2021. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” she said.

Labour’s shadow secretary of state for Scotland, Ian Murray, said the SNP’s finances were “an appalling scandal” and he criticised the party’s handling of it.

The issue appears to have damaged the SNP’s position in the polls, leading to suggestions that Labour could take almost half the party’s 45 Westminster seats at elections next year.

Support among the Scottish electorate for SNP’s core issue of independence remains at close to 50 per cent.

Succession: George Soros Hands Son Alex Control of His $25 Billion Empire

Billionaire left-wing Democrat donor George Soros is handing control of his $25 billion financial empire to his younger son Alex who has vowed to pursue even more ultra-liberal causes.

The newly crowned 37-year-old heir told the Wall Street Journal he will broaden his father’s famously woke interests to include issues like voting and abortion rights as well as “gender equality.”

He also feels bound to inject himself into the day-to-day political affairs of the nation ahead of the 2024 election.

“I’m more political,” Alex observed when comparing himself to his Hungarian-born financier father.

He has already visited the White House 17 times in just over a year and met with big-name Democrats, as Breitbart News reported.

He also recently tweeted a picture of himself with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Open Society Foundations, the Soros family non-profit, currently directs about $1.5 billion a year to causes all around the planet.

The young man’s profile on the Open Society website outlines he is also “the founding chair of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, and sits on the boards of Bard College, the Center for Jewish History, Central European University, the European Council on Foreign Relations, and International Crisis Group.”

The Soros scion told the outlet he worried about the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House — suggesting the family will contribute greatly to Democrats in the 2024 presidential election.

As much as I would love to get money out of politics, as long as the other side is doing it, we will have to do it, too,” he said.

During the interview, Alex reportedly urged Democratic figures to be clearer on delivering their messages while being “more patriotic and inclusive” to win the trust of voters.

As Breitbart News has chronicled previously, Soros-backed organizations funneled millions of dollars to organizations dedicated to advocating for mass immigration and amnesty for illegal immigrants, organizations helping illegal aliens evade deportation from the United States, and organizations that work to normalize and legalize prostitution.

In a move that has left the international community abuzz, Iran, a country scrutinized for its stringent restrictions on civil liberties, has secured two critical positions within the United Nations.

After assuming leadership in a U.N. forum on the promotion of human rights through technology, Iran has now been elected as Vice President of the General Assembly, solidifying its expanding influence within this key international body, JNS reported.

Advocates of human rights are voicing concerns due to Iran’s track record of strict penalties for dissenting voices, which are based on its interpretation of Sharia law, an Islamic legal system. This contrasts with the forum’s stated mission of enhancing human rights through technology.

Iran is one of the countries with the highest rates of executions in the world, according to several human rights organizations. Crimes punishable by death include murder, rape, drug trafficking, and, in some instances, economic crimes. Iran has also faced criticism for imposing the death penalty in cases of “blasphemy”, apostasy (renouncing Islam), and homosexuality, and for executing juvenile offenders. Some of the punishments include public executions, flogging, amputation, and stoning.

Despite these controversies, Iran’s secured another position as the vice president of the General Assembly, which underscores its growing influence on the international stage.

According to the UN General Assembly’s Rules of Procedure, the Vice President’s role is largely to support the President of the General Assembly. In the absence of the President, a Vice President can preside over sessions of the Assembly. The Vice Presidents do not have additional powers beyond those of a regular member of the General Assembly, except when presiding over a session in the absence of the President.

Critics argue that Iran’s ascent to these roles contrasts the U.N.’s principles of ‘promoting peace, justice, human rights, and social progress.’ Iran’s history of civil rights violations should disqualify it from such positions of influence. They call for the U.N. to review its decision and hold Iran accountable for its human rights record.

“In addition to murdering its own citizens, attacking innocents around the world and racing towards a nuclear weapon with the goal of wiping Israel off the map, Iran will now serve in a senior U.N. position,” he added.
