Chairman Wenstrup: Director Walensky, given how difficult it was to get you here today, with the HHS often negotiating on your behalf, it appears that maybe this administration did not want you to speak regarding these topics…nearly ten weeks ago, the Select Subcommittee requested that the CDC make you available to testify today…through the negotiation process, the Biden administration said there was insufficient time for you to prepare…it took the threat of a subpoena for the administration to finally allow you to attend this hearing.

Walensky: These vaccines built a wall of protection which dramatically decreased the risk of severe disease and death from COVID-19.

Comer: Did the CDC work with private companies to influence the censorship of dissent about vaccines?

Walensky: That topic is one that is under litigation in the courts, so I will not be speaking to that.

Comer: The vaccine did not stop spread or infection.

Walensky: If I could just correct that point- initially it did. For the Wuhan strain, and for the Alpha strain, all of the early data…demonstrated that for those who worked, if you didn't get infected, that you weren't transmitting it to other people.

Ruiz: America's faith in our public health institution was battered by the previous administration's reckless mishandling and politicization of the pandemic response, and these narratives that somehow it was American-funded, bio-weapon made from China, and purposely released from a lab in order to harm the world.

Dr. Wenstrup: Did the American Federation of Teachers provide suggestive edits to the CDC's, February 2021 School Opening Guidance, including a trigger to automatically close schools?

Walensky: The AFT was interested in having closing triggers…they were not accepted, of course.
