Trump Encourages Supporters to Protest Outside Miami Courthouse

Former President Donald Trump is encouraging supporters to protest outside the Miami courthouse where he is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday afternoon.

During an interview with Roger Stone on Monday, Trump was asked about a rally organized being organized by Laura Loomer.

 

The rally is scheduled to begin at noon outside the courthouse on 400 North Miami Avenue. A flyer for the protest urges people to “bring your Trump flags, Trump shirts, Trump hats, Trump signs, bullhorns & your love of President Trump.”

 

When asked for his thoughts on the planned protest, Trump did not hesitate to endorse it.

 

“We need strength in our country now,” Trump said. “Our country is being taken away from us. Our country’s going Communist. It’s going Marxist. It’s going really bad. The people of our country aren’t that way, but the people running it are.”

Trump complained that when he was arraigned in Manhattan over charges of falsifying business records, the police kept protesters very far away from the front of the courthouse.

 

“Look, our country has to protest. We have plenty to protest. We’ve lost everything. We’ve lost our borders. We’ve lost our election integrity. We’ve lost respect all over the world. They want to double and triple your taxes. Look at what they want to do to your taxes,” Trump continued. “These crazy people want to make your taxes so high that you’re not going to be able to live.”

 

The former president and current 2024 Republican frontrunner reminded Stone that our nation was energy independent just three years ago under his leadership.

CNN Drags in Former Oath Keeper and Serial Liar Jason Tatenhove to Smear Trump Supporters Before Trump Arraignment

 

Former Oath Keeper Jason Van Tatenhove testified before the January 6th show trial in July 2022 in front of a national audience.

 

Tatenhove’s testimony was littered with half-truths and outright lies. Liz Cheney and the committee knew this but let him “testify” anyway. There was no cross examination. There never is. The January 6th committee is an insult to Western law and tradition. It was a made for TV show trial.

 

Tatenhove was the Oath Keeper’s Media Director in 2015-2016. It’s been over 7 years since he worked for the Oath Keepers organization.

 

Tatenhove accused the Oath Keepers of plotting an “armed revolution” on the US Capitol on January 6.

 

The truth is that the Oath Keepers were told to leave their weapons in their hotel room that day. There was NO armed revolution and there never were plans made for an armed revolution.

 

Tatenhove also accused the Oath Keepers of being a racist, anti-Semitic group knowing this is a complete lie. In fact, several of the current leaders in the Oath Keepers movement are African-American. Oath Keepers Operations Leader Michael Greene is black and was indicted by the Biden regime and found guilty for standing in the unmarked area around the US Capitol on January 6.

 

Tatenhove also said law enforcement died that day. This was another lie. One police officer died from a stroke the following day. However, four Trump supporters were killed that day. At least two were killed by DC police officers.

 

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes later called The Gateway Pundit to discuss Jason Van Tatenhove’s slander against his organization. Rhodes encouraged every member of the Oath Keepers to sue Tatenhove for defamation.

 

Tatenhove was not at the January 6 rally or protests and has not held any office with the Oath Keepers since 2016. But he continues to defame the Oath Keepers and the fake news continues to call him in to smear the organization and all Trump supporters.

 

On Monday Jason Tatenhove told CNN that

 

Jason Tatenhove: What concerns me more than, say, than the organized groups like the Proud Boys, who seem to have shifted their focus to drag events and protesting LGBTQ+ events. I’m more concerned with the rhetoric and the messaging that is kind of on this fringe around the national organized groups. And really, that’s really the most dangerous aspect of this, because the national groups are fairly good at self-policing and trying to keep people that may not be, you know, that may be more apt to take violent action, kind of out of the area. But this seems to be more of an organic gathering of people that Trump has been messaging directly to. And we saw that start with the choosing of Waco for the kickoff of the campaign. The Ukrainian owner of Burisma allegedly made 17 audio recordings of conversations with the Bidens, Sen. Chuck Grassley revealed Monday from the Senate Floor. Then-Vice President Joe Biden may also have been involved in prompting Burisma to hire his son for a cushy job on the board of directors, according to Grassley’s summary of the FD-1023 confidential human source report the FBI continues to withhold from Congress.

 

These new details, coupled with the House Oversight Committee’s subpoenaing of Hunter’s business partner and fellow Burisma board member on Monday, place the Ukrainian oil and gas company back in the spotlight of the Biden family pay-to-play scandal.

 

For the last month, Grassley and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer have pushed the FBI to release the FD-1023 CHS report that alleged a foreign national — identified by individuals with knowledge of the matter as Mykola Zlochevsky — had bribed the Bidens to influence policy decisions. Zlochevsky, the founder of the Ukrainian oil and gas company Burisma, had allegedly told a “highly credible” CHS, that he paid then-Vice President Biden $5 million and Hunter another $5 million to prompt the firing of a prosecutor looking into Burisma corruption.

 

The FBI refuses to release the FD-1023, however, prompting Grassley to call for transparency. To that end, the Iowa Republican told the country that “the foreign national who allegedly bribed Joe and Hunter Biden allegedly has audio recordings of his conversations with them.”

 

“Seventeen total recordings,” Grassley continued. “According to the 1023, the foreign national possesses 15 audio recordings of phone calls between him and Hunter Biden.” Another two audio recordings involve calls between Zlochevsky and then-Vice President Joe Biden, Grassley stressed.

 

Then, after noting that Zlochevsky kept the recordings “as a sort of insurance policy,” Grassley added that the same FD-1023 also indicated that “then-Vice President Joe Biden may have been involved in Burisma employing Hunter Biden.”

 

Americans have long known Burisma paid Hunter Biden ridiculous sums of money to sit on its board, but until yesterday, the sham seemed crafted by the Ukrainian company to buy influence with the Obama-Biden administration. Now, however, it also appears the then-vice president had a hand in Hunter’s position on the board.

The claims that Zlochevsky possessed recordings — not just of Hunter Biden, but also of “the Big Guy” — suggests we face a serious national security risk, with a compromised president potentially beholden to a blackmailer.

 

This new revelation makes FBI headquarters’ burying of the FD-1023 doubly bad: Not only did the FBI improperly discard the CHS’s intel as “disinformation” and thus not adequately investigate the Bidens’ activities, but the bureau apparently also failed to consider the need to provide Biden a defensive briefing.

 

In addition to unveiling these two new important details, Grassley suggested more details will be forthcoming. “I want everyone to remember that I have read the unredacted version” of the FD-1023, the Iowa senator said as he ended his floor speech.

 

What Grassley will reveal next, however, is but one of the worries for the Bidens. Yesterday also brought news that the House Oversight Committee had subpoenaed Hunter’s ex-business partner and friend Devon Archer to testify on Friday.

 

Archer had sat on the board of Burisma with Hunter. The two were also longtime business partners at Rosemont Seneca. Archer was reportedly “present at meetings Hunter arranged for his foreign business partners to meet with his father or talk to him on the phone.” Archer was also famously photographed meeting then-Vice President Joe Biden “in his White House office weeks before Archer and Hunter joined the board of the corrupt Ukrainian energy company Burisma.”

 

These facts suggest Archer may be able to confirm some of the details provided by the CHS. It seems unlikely Archer will talk, though, with Hunter’s former business partner instead likely asserting his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. On the other hand, Archer recently lost his challenge to an unrelated criminal conviction for fraud, and he may see cooperation as more attractive now.

 

But that presumes Archer has someone to bargain with, and the Biden DOJ is unlikely to want to cut a deal with him. The Republican-controlled House may, however, and while not widely known, it also has the power to grant immunity from criminal prosecution. That might just be what is needed to expose the extent of the Bidens’ corruption.

 

The corruption of the DOJ and the FBI is another matter entirely — hundreds more whistleblowers are needed for that enterprise.

The video was composed from images taken by the robotic Cassini spacecraft as it passed Jupiter in 2000, on its way to Saturn. The two moons visible are volcanic Io, in the distance, and icy Europa. In the time-lapse video, Europa appears to overtake Io, which is odd because Io is closer to Jupiter and moves faster. The explanation is that the motion of the fast Cassini spacecraft changes the camera location significantly during imaging. Jupiter is currently being visited by NASA's robotic Juno spacecraft, while ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), launched in April, is enroute.

These facts suggest Archer may be able to confirm some of the details provided by the CHS. It seems unlikely Archer will talk, though, with Hunter’s former business partner instead likely asserting his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. On the other hand, Archer recently lost his challenge to an unrelated criminal conviction for fraud, and he may see cooperation as more attractive now.

But that presumes Archer has someone to bargain with, and the Biden DOJ is unlikely to want to cut a deal with him. The Republican-controlled House may, however, and while not widely known, it also has the power to grant immunity from criminal prosecution. That might just be what is needed to expose the extent of the Bidens’ corruption.

The corruption of the DOJ and the FBI is another matter entirely — hundreds more whistleblowers are needed for that enterprise.

Journalists covering former President Donald Trump’s upcoming arraignment in Miami are banned from bringing cellphones and other electronic equipment into the courtroom, the chief district judge of the Florida federal court ruled on June 12, shortly after a separate judge ruled that the case will not be televised.

 

The ban covers all news reporters and other members of the media who will be present inside the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. United States Courthouse in Miami on June 13, Judge Cecilia Altonaga said in her ruling (pdf) on Monday.

 

Trump is expected to appear at the courthouse in downtown Miami at around 3 p.m. to face charges in the federal government’s classified document case.

 

According to Altonaga, the U.S. Marshals Service will “continue to inspect all cellular phones and other electronic equipment as they are brought into the federal courthouse facilities as directed to protect the Bench, Bar, and public from harm.”

 

Anyone violating the ban risks a 30-day prison sentence, a $5,000 fine, and punishment for contempt of court, the judge concluded.

The monument that the poet Victor Hugo called the “Khéops of the West” has since become one of the highest symbols of French Catholic identity and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, with more than 3 million visitors a year.

 

This important anniversary will give rise to a number of celebrations that will continue through the fall of 2023.

 

Standing on relatively inhospitable terrain, enthroned on a rocky islet less than a kilometer in diameter, surrounded by a vast sandy plain subject to the vagaries of the tides, the UNESCO World Heritage site has stood the test of time, offering itself as a spectacle for dozens of generations to see.

 

Indeed, the history of this place of prayer and pilgrimage was as precarious and tumultuous as its surroundings.

 

While the construction of the present abbey church dates back to 1023, a first church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel is said to have been built as early as 708 on the mount, then known as Mont-Tombe.

 

According to “Revelation,” the oldest text reporting the context of the abbey’s construction (written around the beginning of the 11th century), St. Aubert, then-bishop of Avranches, was visited three times in a dream by the archangel, who instructed him to erect a sanctuary in his honor on the summit of the site, “so that he whose venerable commemoration was celebrated at Mont Gargan [the first great shrine dedicated to the Leader of the Celest Army, in the Puglia region of Italy] might be celebrated with no less fervor in the middle of the sea.”

 

St. Aubert undertook the building of a first church with the capacity of about a hundred people, consecrated in October 709, and given the name Mont-Saint-Michel-au-péril-de-la-Mer. The prelate installed 12 canons there, responsible for praying the Divine Office and welcoming local pilgrims.

 

The canons were replaced in the 10th century by Benedictine monks at the behest of Richard I, duke of Normandy, who had little taste for the canons’ opulent lifestyle.

 

In 1023, the order undertook the construction of the abbey church we know today, based on three rock-cut crypts and the former chapel. This ambitious project marked a decisive step in the international outreach of the site, where miracles abounded as the flow of pilgrims from all over Christendom expanded.

 

“This edifice is like Noah’s ark laid over the crypts,” said François Saint-James, a guide and lecturer at Mont Saint-Michel, in an interview with Le Devoir newspaper, underlining the architectural prowess required for this medieval project. “It was a time when France was covered with a white cloak of churches, as a monk from Cluny once wrote. You have to imagine the gigantic scale of the work. The granite blocks were cut on the Chausey islands, 34 kilometers from here. Caen stone, a soft, light stone that’s easy to carve, was used. … When, in the midst of the Hundred Years’ War, the Romanesque choir collapsed, it was rebuilt in flamboyant Gothic style.”

 

While the abbey’s architectural evolution continued uninterrupted until the 19th century, one of its highest points was the construction of “La Merveille” (The Wonder) in the 13th century, a jewel of Norman Gothic art. It consists of two buildings on three levels, supported by high buttresses, with a cloister and refectory, 80 meters above sea level, beneath which were built an almshouse, a storeroom, and guest rooms.

 

The fame of the shrine started to decline in the 17th century, when part of the abbey was turned into a prison by the royal power. Seized by central government during the revolution, it became a detention center for priests deemed hostile to the Jacobin terror.

 

In the 19th century, the site, listed as a historic monument in 1874, was gradually returned to monastic life and its original vocation as a sanctuary. The abbey’s distinctive silhouette was further enhanced by a neo-Gothic spire in 1897, topped by a gilded statue of the archangel.

To mark its 1,000th anniversary, a special tribute is being paid to the abbey that many have dubbed the “Wonder of the West” with the exhibition “La Demeure de l’Archange” (The Archangel’s Abode) retracing its glorious and tumultuous history through some 30 masterpieces, until Nov. 5. Many of these items, which include sculptures, scale models, statues, and silverware, will be on display to visitors to the abbey for the first time.

 

Another highlight of the many celebrations taking place over the summer and part of the autumn will be the “Millennium Solstice,” a never-before-seen light show projected onto Mont Saint-Michel from various spots in the bay on the evening of June 23.

 

The beauty of this sacred site, trodden by millions of pilgrims over the centuries, has been celebrated and immortalized in the writings of many great men of letters over the last few centuries, from Gustave Flaubert to Théophile Gautier and Victor Hugo. In particular, it inspired the novel “Les Merveilles du Mont Saint-Michel” (1879) by the prolific writer Paul Féval. He had already paid tribute to the monument a few years earlier, in “La Fée des grèves,” with these lines often quoted by admirers of the famous Mont:

 

“Twilight broke. Mont-Saint-Michel was the first to emerge from the shadows, offering the golden wings of its archangel to the reflections of the dawning dawn; then the sides of Normandy and Brittany lit up in turn. Miami Republican Mayor Francis Suarez Details Security Preparations Before Trump’s Political Arraignment Tuesday

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) blasted President Joe Biden over an alleged “criminal bribery scheme” in which an FBI informant suggests the president and his family have received millions of dollars in foreign payments, asking if they had paid their “fair share.”

 

On Monday, while speaking on the Senate floor, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) revealed that a largely unredacted version of the FBI’s FD-1023 form said that “the foreign national who allegedly bribed Joe and Hunter Biden allegedly has audio recordings of his conversations with them — 17 such recordings.”

 

In response, Donalds affirmed that Grassley’s comments “pan out” with what he has seen of the same form.

 

“Everything that Sen. Grassley says does pan out because the document does state that the Burisma executive actually has receipts,” Donalds told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “And then the other piece that definitely pans out is that they move the money through several accounts that would take investigators 10 years to find.”

 

“By the way, I will add this: Joe Biden likes to say that the rich need to pay their fair share,” he continued. “’Hey, Joe, did you pay your taxes on that $5 million?’ I don’t think you did.”

 

Donalds asserted that he believes Biden is compromised and echoed others’ calls for a special counsel investigation.

 

“The president and the president’s family have been shaking down foreign companies and foreign countries for a long time,” Donalds said. “Don’t tell me that Joe Biden is not compromised by the fact that his family has gotten millions and millions of dollars through all these dummy shell corporations that they set up in his last year and a half as vice president.”

 

“They set it up on purpose for this exact thing,” the congressman said. “It’s time that a special council is brought forward to investigate this the same way they have a zealous prosecution of President Trump.”

 

When asked about the alleged “bribery scheme,” Biden has called the allegations “a bunch of malarkey,” saying, “Where’s the money? I’m joking.”

 

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) also told Ingraham to expect appropriations legislation coming from the House next week that will employ Congress’s “power of the purse” and seek to withhold government funding of the FBI amid allegations of corruption within the federal agency.

Treat Williams, who is remembered for headlining the family drama Everwood and the musical Hair, died Monday night following a motorcycle accident in Vermont. He was 71.

 

According to the Vermont State Police, the crash happened on Vermont Route 30 just north of Morse Hill Road when a southbound 2008 Honda Element attempted to turn into a parking lot.

 

"Initial investigation indicates the Element stopped, signaled a left turn, and then turned into the path of a northbound 1986 Honda VT 700c motorcycle operated by Williams," read the statement by the police.

The following year he played a supporting role in The Ritz, and rose to fame in 1979 as George Berger in the Miloš Forman film Hair, based on the Broadway musical. The part in Hair resulted in his first Golden Globe nomination (for New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture - Male). Ultimately, WIlliams appeared in over 75 films, including 1941 (1979), Once Upon a Time In America (1984), Flashpoint (1984), Dead Heat (1988), and Deep Rising (1998).

 

In 1991, Williams segued to television in his first regularly scheduled series, drama Eddie Dodd, which was based on the 1989 film True Believer. It aired for six episodes. Next was the short-lived sitcom Good Advice opposite Shelley Long from 1993 to 1994. But it was Everwood from 2002 to 2006 that clicked. Williams played Dr. Andy Brown, who moves his family to the fictional small town of Everwood, Colorado after the death of his wife.

 

Williams appeared as a regular in the TV dramas Against the Wall in 2011 and American Odyssey in 2015. Both aired for 13 episodes. He was part of the core cast of drama Chesapeake Shores, appearing in 53 episodes between 2016 and 2022. And he had recurring roles on the dramas Chicago Fire and Blue Bloods.

 

The late actor is survived by his wife, Pam Van Sant, and their two children, Gill Williams and Elinor Williams.

Nottingham incident LIVE: Terror police storm home on street where 2 were killed

Legal experts warn that even one slip in former President Donald Trump’s defense against charges of mishandling classified material could send him to jail for the rest of his life.

 

When Breitbart did the math of the 37 counts against Trump, assuming the maximum for each count, Trump could face a sentence of up to 400 years in prison.

 

The site noted that two of the allegations against Trump carry a maximum of five years each; four carry maximum sentences of 20 years each, and 31 counts carry a maximum sentence of 10 years each.

 

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said locking up Trump forever was the plan all along, according to Fox News.

Although Trump has put a bold front on his predicament by saying he would not abandon his campaign even if convicted, legal scholar Jonathan Turley said Trump is in a tight spot.

 

“The problem is that he’s got to run the table. He’s 76 years old. All the government has to do is stick the landing on one count and he could have a terminal sentence,” Turley told Fox News.

 

“You’re talking about crimes that have a 10 or 20-year period as a maximum. The evidence here is quite strong and we haven’t heard their other side. Generally, these indictments are a lot stronger on the day they’re issued than the next day,” Turley said.

 

Turley said the defense “may be able to knock down some of these issues, but some of this evidence is coming from his former counsel. And these are very damaging statements made against him. It may be hard to move those.”

 

“The fact is both things may be true. Yes, the Department of Justice may have been out to get him, but he made it easy. I mean, if you look at what is being described in this indictment, confronted with someone that he felt was trying to get him, he couldn’t have made it more easy for them to do so,” Turley said.

 

In a column on his website, Turley said the stakes are high for both sides.

 

“The Justice Department has done tremendous damage to itself — and, potentially, to this case — due to its prior history with Trump. FBI and Justice officials have shown open bias against him and have treated him differently than figures like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,” Turley wrote.

 

But Truly did not minimize the stakes for Trump.

 

“Trump is now facing the most serious criminal charges in his career. If successful and Trump is not pardoned by himself or one of his Republican competitors (or even by a magnanimous Joe Biden), it could be a lethal threat. At 76 years old, Trump would be unlikely to survive a prison stint even without the imposition of the maximum sentences allowed under these charges,” Turley wrote.

 

Turley noted in another column posted on his website that although the 2024 presidential election is 17 months away, the case might well not go to trial until after the voting, which means, as Turley wrote, “the ultimate judgment in the case will be the millions of jurors in the coming election.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A brief commotion arose on the White House lawn today, as a Secret Service agent could be heard shouting "Spit it out! Spit it out right this instant!" as he chased President Joe Biden out onto the grass. A source within the administration later confirmed that Biden had a AA battery in his mouth at the time of the incident.

 

"This has been a daily common problem over the last few years," said the source. "He's always just putting the most random things in his mouth. Batteries, rubber bands, paper clips…you name it. Tourists sightseeing near the White House at the time reported seeing Biden frantically shuffling away from the pursuing Secret Service agent, determined to not follow the orders to spit out the battery. "He looked like he was being very disobedient," said one onlooker. "I think I even heard the Secret Service agent tell him he wouldn't get his fruit snacks this afternoon."

 

An anonymous source within the White House later revealed Biden was ordered to sit in the "Time Out" chair in the corner of the Lincoln Bedroom before his wife, Jill, directed him to apologize to the Secret Service agent.

 

At publishing time, White House staff had been urgently called to the Oval Office after President Biden was found scribbling on the walls with a Sharpie.

Adams County Sheriff's Office reports a man has been arrested after firing multiple rounds at power-generating facilities in the Hells Canyon Corridor.

Brownlee and Hells Canyon power equipment sustained damage. However, no customers have been directly affected by outages related to the incident.

On June 8, Adams County deputies responded to a report of a male shooting at power-generating equipment in the Hells Canyon Corridor. A multi-jurisdiction effort, including Adams, Washington, Baker and Wallowa Counties, led to the safe apprehension of a 58-year-old male suspect, later identified as Randy Vail of Meridian.

Adams County, Meridian Police and the FBI executed a search warrant at Vail's property in Meridian. He is being held in Washington County Jail on multiple felony charges. Idaho Power is continuing to work to repair the damaged equipment.

Getting the Idea of Government and Political Authority Out of Your Mind

 

Political authority, or the authority of State, or the authority of Government, is something the average person virtually never questions. Most people go through their entire lives believing that their Government – although almost composed of provable criminals, cheats and liars – still has a solid basis for its political authority. Most people, whether left wing, right winigor anywhere in between on the political spectrum, are Statists: they think that Government has an inherent right to rule, using coercion if necessary.

 

Yet, even a cursory examination shows that, if a normal person acted like Government, they would be characterized as cunning, secretive and manipulative, and either be diagnosed as insane, or locked up as a danger to society, or both. So why do people allow and consent to such a situation?

 

David Hume on Government and Political Authority

The 18th century British philosopher David Hume attested to this situation when he wrote that:“Nothing is more surprising than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.”

 

Hume was clearly one of those rare few who took the time to closely examine the origins and political authority of Government. Interestingly, he was propagating many of these ideas during the mid-1700s, a few decades before the time of the American and French Revolutions.

 

Hume realized that most Government is formed and is held together by war. History teaches us this over and over again, including politicians’ inventions of fictitious enemies to justify a State’s existence:

 

“Most governments are not formed by contract but rather through conquest and war.”

 

“The heights of popularity and patriotism are still the beaten road to power and tyranny; flattery to treachery; standing armies to arbitrary government; and the glory of God to the temporal interest of the clergy.”

 

“It is probable, that the first ascendant of one man over multitudes begun during a state of war; where the superiority of courage and of genius discovers itself most visibly, where unanimity and concert are most requisite, and where the pernicious effects of disorder are most sensibly felt. The long continuance of that state, an incident common among savage tribes, enured the people to submission; and if the chieftain possessed as much equity as prudence and valour, he became, even during peace, the arbiter of all differences, and could gradually, by a mixture of force and consent, establish his authority….

 

Hume warned that authority should never become too uncontrollable over liberty:

 

In all governments, there is a perpetual intestine struggle, open or secret, between Authority and Liberty; and neither of them can ever absolutely prevail in the contest. A great sacrifice of libertymust necessarily be made in every government; yet even the authority, which confines liberty, can never, and perhaps ought never, in any constitution, to become quite entire and uncontrollable.”

 

Lastly, Hume explicitly stated that a State’s supposed political authority could not hold water when investigated closely:

 

“No maxim is more comfortable … than to submit quietly to the government, which we find establish’d in the country where we happen to live, without enquiring too curiously into its origin and first establishment. Few governments will bear being examin’d so rigorously.”

 

Is political authority merely based on opinion?

 

“It is on opinion only that government is founded; and this maxim extends to the most despotic and most military governments, as well as to the most free and most popular.”

 

As we shall see, this last quote rings true, and is especially interesting given that it flatly contradicts the widely held notion put forth by Hume’s fellow British philosopher John Locke, who proposed that their was some kind of social contract from which the State justly derived its powers….

One of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s primary goals, having regained leadership of the House, must be to reinstate the institutional integrity that was honored only in the breach over and over again by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

 

Long-standing fundamental House rules and protocols repeatedly were violated under Pelosi, for the single purpose of pursuing a partisan political agenda at the expense of historically honored principles. The formation of the House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the Capitol and its indisputable perversion of important House rules highlight the issue. The rules that were violated allowed the committee to abuse the subpoena process and deny subpoenaed witnesses basic protections the rules were intended to provide. This must be corrected immediately.

 

There is one mechanism readily available to the speaker to restore order and respect for the rules. It is called the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (“BLAG”).

 

The BLAG was created in 1993 by a Democrat-controlled House, over the objection of a majority of Republicans in the House. It is a body comprised of five members of the House leadership, three majority party members and two minority party members, that speaks for the House in directing litigation in which the BLAG perceives the House to have a direct interest.

 

Republicans who opposed the formation of BLAG argued that the entire House should vote before a legal position that purports to speak for the House is adopted. The Democrats prevailed, and now by House rule, once BLAG members vote to direct the House general counsel to participate in litigation and take a position, even if the vote is 3-2, its position speaks for the entire House.

The J6 Committee’s Actions Highlight Partisan Abuse of the Rules

 

McCarthy characterized the degree to which the Jan. 6 Committee flagrantly violated long-entrenched House protocol and rules to support its partisan political agenda as “unprecedented” and “an egregious abuse of power.” However, when the rules violations have been challenged, courts have concluded that they were bound by the House’s own interpretation and application of its rules and had to yield to the BLAG as the official advocacy voice of the House. Since BLAG endorsed the Jan. 6 Committee’s actions by a 3-2 vote, their rules violations were permitted with impunity, notwithstanding the express language of the House rules.

 

McCarthy must now convene the BLAG, as he has the full authority to do, to reverse its partisan political perversion by Pelosi and company, and to return the House to a body that at least honors its own rules, without regard to a politically expedient agenda of the day.

 

The following examples of the Jan. 6 Committee’s abuse of House protocol and rules demonstrate why we should care and why McCarthy must act now.

 

First, the House resolution creating the Jan. 6 Committee called for it to be comprised of 13 members, five of whom were to be selected in consultation with then-House Minority Leader McCarthy. Despite McCarthy’s public protestations, Pelosi summarily rejected McCarthy’s selections for the committee. McCarthy then refused to participate in a process that violated the rules, and the committee went forward with nine members instead of the 13 provided for in the resolution creating it. Pelosi’s partisan political selections for the committee undermined its integrity.

 

Second, the committee abused its authority regarding witnesses called to testify, in violation of the resolution establishing it and House rules and regulations. These important rules require consultation between a committee’s chair and its ranking minority member before a witness can be subpoenaed to give sworn testimony. Under long-standing party rules and House protocol, a committee’s ranking minority member is chosen by the House minority leader. Her or his purpose is to protect a witness from abusive partisan subpoenas and from abusive questioning during a deposition.

 

The Jan. 6 Committee had no ranking minority member as a matter of law. Some have tried to claim Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., was the ranking minority member, but this is expressly contradicted by the unequivocal statement by Committee Chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., that Cheney definitely was not the ranking minority member (as you can see at the 16:37 mark at the committee’s first hearing). The committee had none.

 

Under House rules and the Jan. 6 Committee resolution, without a ranking minority member, the committee had no valid subpoena authority. The rules deem the protection of subpoenaed witnesses to be so important that unless each witness called to testify is given a copy of Rule 3(b), which explains the committee’s deposition authority, the committee cannot compel a witness to testify. The Jan. 6 Committee failed to give key witnesses a copy of the rule.

The BLAG Process Must Not Be Abused for Partisan Political Purposes

 

In order to formally endorse the committee’s clear violations of express House rules and established protocol, Pelosi convened the BLAG and secured a 3-2 vote along strictly partisan lines, authorizing House counsel to file a brief in federal court in Washington, D.C., advising the court that the House’s official position to which the court must yield was that the committee must be deemed to have fully complied with the rules, notwithstanding the actual language of the rules, because the Democratic Party-controlled BLAG so voted, albeit 3-2 on partisan party lines.

 

The text of the rules and historical House protocol were rendered meaningless. Pelosi and her cronies successfully argued, through the BLAG, that courts must yield to what the political party in power at the time in the House says House rules mean, regardless of the harm caused to the rights of individual Americans and to the institutional integrity of this constitutionally critical branch of government. The courts so far have yielded to that BLAG position.

 

McCarthy Can and Must Restore Institutional Integrity

 

McCarthy has spoken loudly and in compelling terms about the grave damage done to the integrity of the House by the composition of the Jan. 6 Committee, its disregard for the rules and protocol, and the damage the BLAG’s actions did in arguing in favor of the committee’s perversion of the rules and protocol.

 

McCarthy has it well within his power to easily remedy the matter and restore the integrity of House rules and the institution itself. This depends on having rules and protocols that are applied evenly and consistently and are not violated with impunity simply to serve a partisan political agenda.

 

He can and must convene the BLAG and make it clear through that legal voice of the House that the earlier 3-2 BLAG vote endorsing the perversion of the rules and protocol no longer is valid and cannot continue to speak for the House. The BLAG must identify the rules and protocol violations committed by the Jan. 6 Committee about which McCarthy so adamantly complained, and the BLAG must set the record straight as to the procedural safeguards that the rules provide with respect to committee actions.

 

Committees must not be allowed to run roughshod over the rights of Americans called to testify. Moreover, every one of us has a direct stake in the integrity of committee investigations on important matters of public interest. The House must ensure that the institutional integrity of the House has been restored and that our individual rights matter and are not to be violated by our elected representatives to serve their partisan political purposes. Only then can we be true to the fundamental American principle of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

The transition from the RNA to the DNA world was a major event in the history of life. The invention of DNA required the appearance of enzymatic activities for both synthesis of DNA precursors, retro-transcription of RNA templates and replication of singleand double-stranded DNA molecules. Recent data from comparative genomics, structural biology and traditional biochemistry have revealed that several of these enzymatic activities have been invented independently more than once, indicating that the transition from RNA to DNA genomes was more complex than previously thought. The distribution of the different protein families corresponding to these activities in the three domains of life (Archaea, Eukarya, and Bacteria) is puzzling. In many cases, Archaea and Eukarya contain the same version of these proteins, whereas Bacteria contain another version. However, in other cases, such as thymidylate synthases or type II DNA topoisomerases, the phylogenetic distributions of these proteins do not follow this simple pattern. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain these observations, including independent invention of DNA and DNA replication proteins, ancient gene transfer and gene loss, and/or nonorthologous replacement.
