UK: 15 Newborns Diagnosed with Myocarditis from June 2022 to March 2023
In May, it was reported that eight babies were admitted to intensive care, and one baby died, in a mysterious cluster of infections that were blamed on a typically harmless ‘enterovirus’. Since June 2022, a total of 15 newborns in Wales and south-west England were struck down with severe myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart. Nine of the babies tested positive for enterovirus using PCR tests that can be unreliable. Ten cases were detected in Wales, compared with just one in the previous six years. Experts are baffled about the cause and the spike. The World Health Organization (WHO) issued an alert labelled the cluster ‘unusual’ and said it may be recommended that childcare facilities and schools are closed if cases surge. The WHO said that the public health risk was low.
The Associated Press reported that there were false claims on social media that declared the WHO admitted that mothers who were vaccinated against COVID-19 were giving birth to babies with birth defects. The WHO also denied this claim. The local agency that investigated the cases said there is no evidence the myocarditis cases were linked to COVID-19 vaccination, and said “only a small minority” of the mothers were actually vaccinated during pregnancy. There is no word on whether the mothers received COVID shots after they gave birth and were breastfeeding. The earliest a baby can receive a COVID vaccine in the UK is 6 months old. More clarification on the matter is needed.
