Ancient Mayan underwater canoe was used for ritual to the underworld - study

Around the canoe, divers found 38 separate skeletal remains, including a female human foot bone and bones from an armadillo and other animals.

An ancient canoe discovered two years ago deep inside an underwater cave near the Mayan city of Chichen Itza may have been placed at the spot seen as a portal to the underworld as part of a religious ritual, according to new research.

At the 12th International Congress of Mayanists held in June, specialists hypothesized about the ritual use of the ancient vessel, based on the results of studies in laboratories in Mexico and abroad.

The extremely rare canoe was found almost completely intact, submerged in a fresh-water pool known as a cenote, thousands of which dot Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, near the ruins of Chichen Itza, once a major Maya city featuring elaborately carved temples and towering pyramids.

Measuring a little over 1.6 meters in length and 80 cm wide, the canoe was described by the Mexican antiquities institute INAH as "the first complete canoe like this in the Maya area," and was at first tentatively dated to between 830-950 AD, near the end of the Maya civilization's classical zenith, but turned out to date to the 16th century, new carbon analysis shows.

Around the canoe, divers found 38 separate skeletal remains, including a female human foot bone and bones from an armadillo, dog, turkey and eagle, according to the website livescience. In ancient Maya belief, caves and the underwater sinkholes called cenotes were gateways to the underworld.

The armadillo was seen as a symbol for a jaguar deity called 'L,' who had a cape shaped like the armored pattern of the armadillo shell, according to Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

The researchers think that the armadillo remains might be an "allusion to the entry of the [armored animal] into the underworld," according to the statement.

The combination of armadillo bones with the find of a human foot gave rise to the theory that the canoe was used during a ritual and placed in the cave on purpose.

"There are known images in Mayan ceramics in which [the armadillo] appears as a 'stool of the gods,' with characters that place their feet on it," Alexandra Biar, an archaeologist from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) said. "This would be directly linked to the archaeological evidence observed in the cenote," with the armadillo serving as a manifestation of the deity.

Lawsuit Bombshell: Sex Trafficker Jeffrey Epstein Was “a Business Partner” with Members of JPMorgan’s Board of Directors

For months now, the largest federally-insured bank in the United States, JPMorgan Chase, represented by WilmerHale, a law firm with more than 1,000 attorneys, has been attempting to bamboozle the American people with the narrative that it engaged in no wrongdoing when it provided millions of dollars in cold, hard cash to child sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein for more than a decade – without following the legal mandate of reporting this suspicious account activity to law enforcement. Internal emails produced in discovery in two lawsuits against the bank in federal court in Manhattan show that the bank was well aware that Epstein was a known sexual predator of children as it doled out all of this cash – at times reaching $40,000 to $80,000 per month.

The legal narrative that the WilmerHale attorneys crafted for the public and the media is this: a sole former employee of the bank – Jes Staley – is responsible for all of the bank’s wrongdoing involving Epstein, never mind that the bank was all too willing to take the lucrative business deals and clients that came its way from Epstein via Staley, as also documented in internal emails. To get headlines promoting this narrative, the bank has made a big deal of suing Staley on the premise that it wants to recover its legal costs by clawing back his compensation.

Victims of Epstein had filed a class action lawsuit against the bank last year. The bank offered a settlement of $290 million in that matter in June, which is pending a final fairness hearing. The bank did not acknowledge wrongdoing. (See our report here for the $87 million in legal fees under the settlement for the plaintiffs’ attorneys and the onerous terms for Epstein’s victims.) The second Epstein-related lawsuit against the bank, which is ongoing, was filed by the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein built a private island compound and engaged in sex trafficking of underage girls.

Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, accused the Trump administration agencies of colluding with Big Tech companies. DeSantis said these agencies worked together to suppress a story involving Hunter Biden’s laptop during the 2020 election.

In a recent interview on Fox News “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo,” DeSantis expressed his concerns about what he believes to be a significant issue from the 2020 election.

According to DeSantis, the Trump administration’s agencies were complicit in the suppression of a story related to information found on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

“I look back at the Hunter Biden censorship, which was a huge, huge deal to happen in the 2020 election, and yet those were Donald Trump’s own agencies that were colluding with Big Tech. I would never allow that to happen. I would fire those people immediately,” said DeSantis.

One user responded to DeSantis’ statement, “Trump’s case has always been that career bureaucrats, the intelligence community apparatus, and mainstream media colluded to sabotage his presidency and re-election. I don’t think this attack lands the way DeSantis thought it would and seems desperate.”

According to trial lawyer Robert Barnes, the actual court order specifically determined that the Trump administration was purposely kept in the dark and unaware of the Big Tech censorship by the FBI and others.

“The actual court order explicitly found that Trump administration was deliberately kept in the dark & unaware of the Big Tech censorship by the FBI, etc,” Barnes wrote.

DeSantis’s statements come as he trails former President Donald Trump in primary polls for the 2024 presidential race.

Maria cornered Governor DeSantis on his stalled out campaign.

“I’m wondering what’s going on with your campaign? There was a lot of optimism about you running for president earlier in the year, but here’s this weekend’s headline from the Politico playbook, “FAILURE TO LAUNCH — Florida Gov. RON DeSANTIS’ campaign to topple DONALD TRUMP has stalled.” We are way behind, says a top DeSantis PAC official, sounding the alarm. What happened?” asked Maria Bartiromo.

“Maria, these are narratives. The media does not want me to be the nominee. I think that’s very, very clear. Why? Because they know I’ll beat Biden. But even more importantly, they know I will actually deliver on all these things,” DeSantis said.

Australia joins G7-backed 'climate club' and promises to drive down greenhouse gas emissions

Australia is joining the "climate club" backed by the Group of Seven major economies to take more ambitious action in tackling global warming, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced.

The club was first proposed by Nobel Prize winner William Nordhaus as a way of getting countries to voluntarily set high targets for curbing climate change and then require trading partners to meet those same standards.

Such moves are opposed by major emerging economies like China, the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gas.

"We're very pleased to join the climate club because we are ambitious and we also see that this isn't just the right thing to do by the environment, but this is also the right thing to do by jobs and by our economy," Albanese said at a news conference in Berlin after meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who made the idea a key pillar of his G7 presidency last year.

"One thing we can do is to cooperate and learn off each other, because you can't address climate change as just a national issue. It has to be by definition, a global response," Albanese said.

The Albanese government committed last year to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 43 per cent by the end of the decade — almost double the previous target.

In March, parliament passed a law requiring Australia's biggest greenhouse gas polluters reduce their emissions or pay for carbon credits.

Other countries that have joined the climate club include Argentina, Chile, Denmark, Indonesia, Colombia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Singapore and Uruguay.

Amid rampant retail theft across the county, supermarkets in New York have resorted to locking up pints of their high-end ice cream offerings, with lids that must be removed at checkout.

The New York Post reports that the Fairway supermarket in the Upper West Side is one such store, taking precautions with plastic tops on top of $6 cartons of Häagen-Dazs. On the freezer, they posted a sign that reads, "To help maintain the lowest possible cost, a protective lock has been placed on some units of ice cream."

"This lock will be removed at checkout by a store associate. We apologize for any inconvenience," it said about the plastic lock device.

In a video on Twitter, an employee at the store said the ice cream is a "high theft item." He added, "People come, take 10 and run out of the store."

One customer at the store said, "This is the age we live in now, unfortunately. This is the New York that we know.” He continued, “This has nothing to do with anything other than people coming in and ripping off places that are trying to make money.”

“Before you know it, all our groceries will be locked up and we’ll have to go through a security check just to buy food,” another shopper said.

An employee at another store, which locks its freezers with chains, said, "People used to come with garbage bags and fill up the garbage bags with ice cream. Clear out our freezers." The employee explained, “We had to put the locks on because people kept stealing our Red Bull and ice cream out the fridge."

Retail theft has been skyrocketing across the country. The report notes that there have been 13,738 reports of retail theft in New York City in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 8,750 quarterly in 2019. In NYC alone, thefts were up 45 percent with 63,000 incidents in 2022.

A viral video showed a thief using a blowtorch to break into a skincare cabinet at a Queens, NYC Walgreens before making off with $448 worth of products.

The National Retail Federation conducted a study that showed about 75 percent of Americans have to shop at stores where products are locked up. Some such as Walgreens in Chicago have redesigned their locations so that an employee has to take a customer's order and grab their items.

Well it seems many Aussie parents are putting their confidence in 'Big Brother' style technology. A study of 1,000 parents by Real Insurance has found just over a third are currently monitoring their children using GPS tracking apps, 40 per cent of those people believing it is their 'parental right' to use such surveillance methods.

One in ten parents would seriously consider implanting their children with a microchip to keep tabs on them at all times, while three in ten believe the concept is interesting and they would like to know more.

Almost 60 per cent also admitted to using social media platforms to keep track of their children's lives, but half of respondents say they are aware their children are more likely to share parent-friendly content and post more personal information on the platforms where parents aren't connected.

One Sydney-based microchip company, Chip My Life, claim they've been flooded with calls from parents wanting to get their kids implanted despite the technology not actually being available or approved yet.

Some experts though, aren't too fond of the technology citing many moral and health issues. Child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg has compared microchipping children to "tagging a dog".

"They have to understand the greatest protection is in fact what's between the ears of their children," Carr-Gregg told The Daily Telegraph.

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Todd McMurtry, the lawyer who secured settlements from CNN, NBC Universal, and The Washington Post on behalf of Covington Catholic High School teen Nick Sandmann, has joined the legal team for D.A. King and the Dustin Inman Society, who are suing the Southern Poverty Law Center for defamation.

“We’re proud of the willingness of both Liberty Counsel and Todd McMurtry of agreeing to represent us in defense of our good name and reputation from the ridiculous charges of the hatemongering Southern Poverty Law Center,” King, an anti-illegal immigration activist whose organization the SPLC branded an “anti-immigrant hate group,” told The Daily Signal in a phone interview Monday. “We’re also proud of Mr. McMurtry’s experience and success in defamation law.”

“I hope we are successful in court and that no violent, hate-filled supporter of the SPLC finds us first,” the plaintiff added. King was referring to a 2012 incident in which a now-convicted terrorist targeted the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., for a mass shooting, relying on the SPLC’s inclusion of the group on its “hate map” of organizations the left-wing SPLC considers bigoted or hateful in some way.

I wrote in my book “Making Hate Pay,” the SPLC routinely brands mainstream conservative and Christian organizations “hate groups,” putting them on a map with chapters of the Ku Klux Klan. Amid a racial discrimination and sexual harassment scandal in 2019, the SPLC fired its cofounder and a former employee came forward, calling the “hate” accusations a “highly profitable scam.”

McMurtry and the Christian law firm Liberty Counsel joined with King’s current lawyer, James McKoon, on Monday. McKoon, of the McKoon and Gamble law firm in Phenix City, Alabama, initially filed the lawsuit.

Legacy media outlets attacked Sandmann in 2019 when a video of him near the Lincoln Memorial while wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat after the annual March for Life went viral. McMurtry represented Sandmann in multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuits against legacy media outlets, securing undisclosed settlements from CNN, NBC Universal, and The Washington Post. A federal judge dismissed Sandmann’s other defamation lawsuits in July 2022.

King’s lawsuit against the Southern Poverty Law Center made it to the discovery process earlier this year. Other conservative groups have sued the SPLC for defamation, but King’s succeeded because King showed that the SPLC had reason to doubt the truth of its claim that his organization, the Dustin Inman Society, was an “anti-immigrant hate group.” In fact, the SPLC had explicitly stated that the society was not a “hate group” in 2011, but it reversed course in 2018, right after registering a lobbyist to oppose a bill the society supported.

The lawsuit cites an SPLC definition for “anti-immigrant hate group” that dates back to 2020, which no longer appears on the SPLC website—although the center appears not to have adopted a new definition:

Anti-immigrant hate groups are the most extreme of the hundreds of nativist groups that have proliferated since the late 1990s, when anti-immigration xenophobia began to rise to levels not seen in the United States since the 1920s. Most white hate groups are also anti-immigrant, but anti-immigrant hate groups single out that population with dehumanizing and demeaning rhetoric. Although many groups legitimately criticize American immigration policies, anti-immigrant hate groups go much further by pushing racist propaganda and ideas about non-white immigrants.

While the SPLC brands the society an “anti-immigrant hate group,” it does not point to any specific evidence that King or the society “maligned an entire class of people” or fit the definition cited above. “Further, a cursory review of [Plaintiff] DIS’s [Dustin Inman Society’s] website would have revealed that the Board of Advisors of [Plaintiff] DIS is a diverse group of Americans with a variety of racial and immigrant backgrounds,” the lawsuit alleges.

Inger Eberhart, a member of the society’s board and its director of communications, is a black woman; Everett Robinson and Catherine Davis are also black; Mary Grabar is a legal immigrant from Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia); Maria Litland is a legal immigrant who appears on the Austrian Society of America website; and Sabine Durden-Coulter immigrated legally from Germany. Durden-Coulter lost her son in a 2012 car crash caused by an illegal immigrant (with no connection to the crash that killed Dustin Inman).

“One form of sex trafficking involves the cross border transportation of children. In these situations, traffickers recruit and transfer children across international borders in order to sexually exploit them in another country,” explains the now-deleted description of international sex trafficking.

“The traffickers can be individuals working alone, organized crime groups, enterprises, or networks of criminals working together to traffic children into prostitution across country lines,” it continues.

“This form of sex trafficking is a problem in the United States, and recovered victims originate from all over the world, including less-developed areas, such as South and Southeast Asia, Central America, and South America, to more developed areas, such as Western Europe. Once in the United States, a child may be trafficked to any or multiple states within the country.”

“The United States not only faces a problem of foreign victims trafficked into the country, but there is also a homegrown problem of American children being recruited and exploited for commercial sex,” begins the section detailing domestic sex trafficking.

“Pimps and traffickers sexually exploit children through street prostitution, and in adult night clubs, illegal brothels, sex parties, motel rooms, hotel rooms, and other locations throughout the United States,” revealed a section highlighting children forced to engage in prostitution.

In the section “Child Sex Trafficking,” which remains on the Biden administration’s version of the DOJ website, the following paragraph was also erased:
