West not prepared for conflict with China – FT

The US has only a week’s worth of anti-ship missiles, one think tank has estimated

Ammunition shortages laid bare by the Ukraine conflict have prompted some US think-tanks to check on stockpiles in the West and find them wanting, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The military industry of NATO allies is not able to help, either.

A Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) wargame of a conflict with China over Taiwan showed that the US had only about 450 long-range anti-ship missiles, enough for about a week.

Another think tank, the Center for New American Security (CNAS), said the existing missile inventory is “too small to blunt an initial invasion, let alone prevail in a protracted conflict against China.” To deter and defeat Beijing, the Pentagon “needs large stockpiles of stand-off missiles, maritime strike weapons, and layered air and missile defenses,” CNAS concluded.

According to the FT, the US Department of Defense has asked for $1.1 billion in the 2024 fiscal year to buy 118 long-range anti-ship missiles (LRASM), compared to half that amount for 83 missiles the year before. The Pentagon also wants $30 billion for ammunition, a 23% increase over 2023 levels, and $315 billion for new weapons.

CNAS has noted that the Pentagon tends to prioritize big-ticket items such as ships, planes and tanks, “leaving missiles and munitions with inadequate funding.”

The FT revealed that Western powers have spent a combined $170 billion on military and financial aid to Ukraine since February 2022. Kiev is still complaining about ammunition shortages, however.

The US military-industrial complex has spent decades prioritizing efficiency and adopting the just-in-time supply chain used by other industries, according to the FT, leaving it unable to scale up production in wartime. Parts and labor shortages are currently a problem as well.

“The defense industry is so consolidated that it can’t very quickly expand to support a greater demand,” said Stacie Pettyjohn of CNAS. “So we’re slow and behind and don’t have enough of anything.”Only five companies are responsible for major Pentagon contracts, and some parts are made by only one or two suppliers, with no way to make up the shortage elsewhere.

NATO allies are unable to step in and pick up the slack, because the US push to promote American-made weapons has left the European defense industry stunted and fractured, multiple think-tank experts told the FT.

West to shift Ukraine weapons strategy

The US and its allies are setting up repair facilities and translating manuals for foreign hardware, the Pentagon’s acquisition chief says

The US and its allies are pivoting from delivering more weapons to Ukraine to fixing Western hardware that has already been sent to Kiev and damaged during the conflict with Russia, Politico has reported.

Ukraine has been having problems with maintaining the “international hodgepodge of equipment” provided to it by the US, Germany, UK, Poland and many other countries since the start of the fighting in February 2022, the US news website noted in an article on Wednesday.

The ability to quickly fix the damaged hardware has become even more crucial since the launch of the counteroffensive in early June, which has proven “difficult” for Kiev’s forces and “led to some well-publicized losses of US-made Bradley fighting vehicles and hulking mine-resistant troop carriers, along with some damaged German Leopard tanks,”it said.

The Pentagon’s acquisition and sustainment chief, William LaPlante, told Politico that in order to assist Ukraine, the US and its allies are “setting up repair facilities in Europe, we’re translating [training and repair] manuals, we have to do much more together so there’s going to be more of a focus on that.”

Politico described LaPlante as leading a “22-nation working group, led by the US, Poland and the UK,” tasked with making sure that Western-supplied weapons remain in working order during Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.

“We have regular conversations” with Kiev, the Pentagon official said. “What more do they need? Are there more parts we can send? We’re actually tracking what’s called the availability rate of each one of these systems,”in near real-time.

The group has already assisted Ukraine in setting up a support effort to track over 4,000 supply lines for high-demand spare parts for foreign hardware, according to the report. The US has also translated into Ukrainian over 700 technical manuals for the weapons sent to Kiev, so that local technicians can fix them on the spot.

“We’re making sure that they [the Ukrainians] have everything that they need. And if the parts have to come from a country halfway around the world, we make sure we get it to them. So the sustainment is actually most of the work going on right now,” LaPlante said.

However, at the moment “much of the most serious repair work still needs to be shipped to places such as Poland or Czechia before making the long trip back to Ukraine,” Politico added.

EU could shift military training centers to Ukraine – media

The bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, wants to propose the scenario in the event of a ceasefire, Germany’s DPA news agency has claimed

The EU could consider moving a training program for Kiev’s troops to Ukrainian territory in the future, Germany’s DPA news agency has reported. Brussels may also agree to funnel billions more euros into supporting the Ukrainian military in the years to come, it added.

In a report on Thursday, DPA claimed that the bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, was ready to propose a considerable extension to the existing training program for the Ukrainian military during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels later in the day.

According to the media outlet, which claims to have seen a document listing Borrell’s proposals, “when the circumstances allow, a gradual relocation of the training activities to Ukraine could even be considered.”

This scenario could materialize if and when there is a ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow, the German news agency claimed. The reported logic behind the idea is that it could act as a deterrent against any future Russian incursions, as service members from EU nations would be stationed in Ukraine as well.

In addition, Borrell reportedly plans to call for member states to pay for more weapons deliveries to Kiev, including modern fighter jets. According to DPA, Borrell wants some €5 billion ($5.6 billion) earmarked to this end annually between 2024 and 2027. The money would supposedly come from the EU’s Peace Facility (EPF).

Among the other proposals Borrell is reportedly expected to make on Thursday is setting “new quantitative and qualitative training targets” for EU nations. DPA noted that the bloc had originally pledged to train 30,000 Ukrainian service members, with 25,000 troops having already finished their courses or due to finish shortly.

According to the German outlet, the diplomat also wants to see closer cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in terms of arms production and intelligence sharing.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto made it clear on Wednesday that Budapest would block a new €500 million tranche of EU military aid for Ukraine unless Kiev removed a Hungarian bank from its “sponsors of war” list. Ukrainian authorities added the designation to OTP bank in May over its alleged operations in Russia.

Russia has consistently argued that Western support for Ukraine will only serve to prolong the bloodshed.

Pentagon memo reveals special treatment for trans soldiers

The Biden administration reversed its predecessor’s ban on trans people in the military amid historically low recruitment

The Pentagon has extended special privileges to transgender service members including exemptions from readiness requirements and even the obligation to deploy, according to a new memo published by The Dossier on Tuesday.

Transgender servicemembers may secure a waiver from both grooming and uniform standards in order to obtain the “real life experience” deemed necessary to continue with medical transition, according to the 34-page document. While not classified, it was not previously available to the public and represents updated guidance as of February.

They may also obtain a waiver from physical fitness standards if experiencing negative side effects from hormone treatment, and these waivers can be renewed every six months.

A transitioning service member can even avoid deployment entirely while taking cross-sex hormones during their transition. They are considered “non-deployable” for a minimum of 300 days during this period, or until considered “stabilized” on the hormone cocktail.

The military pays for every medical procedure involved in transitioning gender from psychological counseling to “voice feminization surgery,” the memo explains, with full transition time expected to take from 9 to 18 months.

While the Womack Army Medical Center, which authored the document, acknowledges that Defense Department facilities are not equipped to perform complex procedures like vaginoplasty or phalloplasty, it simply instructs the medical provider to refer them to the military’s extensive network of civilian practitioners instead. Only in the case of laser hair removal is the procedure not covered by the taxpayer.

While a recruit may identify as non-binary or gender-fluid, they are required to select a gender marker of male or female – not because the Pentagon wishes to “misgender or disrespect a [servicemember’s] gender identity,” but because “the current medical and Army system views gender as a dichotomous variable,” the memo notes.

President Donald Trump had banned transgender individuals from serving in the US military in 2017. His successor Joe Biden reversed the ban shortly after taking office in 2021. Though the Pentagon repealed its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011, allowing gay and lesbian troops to serve openly, gender dysphoria was still considered cause for involuntary discharge from the service until 2016.

All branches of the US military are currently facing some of the worst recruiting shortfalls in their history. Republican lawmakers have blamed the problem on the Pentagon’s prioritization of diversity, equity and inclusion over military readiness.

Dem Stacey Plaskett Defends Censorship: ‘Free Speech Is Not an Absolute’(Whoring for the DS)

Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) defended censorship on Thursday, arguing that certain views should not enjoy the free speech protections of the First Amendment, which she said was limited by the Supreme Court.

Plaskett, the ranking member of the minority on the House Weaponization Subcommittee, attacked the alleged views of one of the witnesses, Democratic Party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, calling them hateful.

“This is not the free speech that I know of,” she said. She recalled a recent controversyover remarks Kennedy made about the coronavirus affecting some population groups more than others, among other past comments.

Plaskett continued: “Free speech is not an absolute. The Supreme Court has stated that.” (The Court has not restricted the content of speech, but a “time, place, and manner” exceptions for the way speech is expressed.)

The ranking member went on to claim that Republicans had not invited Kennedy to testify because he had been censored on social media, but rather to associate themselves with his controversial views. She also claimed that past witnesses interviewed by the committee, such as would-be “disinformation czar” Nina Jancowicz, had been subjected to death threats, and implied that committee chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) supported those threats.

Republicans were not interested in defending free speech, Plaskett said. Rather, their goal was to force social media companies to promote “any conspiracy theories, no matter how harmful.”

She added: “They want to force social media companies to promote conspiracy theories because they think that’s the only way their candidate can win the 2020 [sic] election.” She said that Congress should be focused instead on issues like inflation.

In response, Kennedy devoted his opening statement to defending his record and noting that he had also been censored for talking about ordinary subjects. The purpose of free speech, he noted, was to protect speech that people did not agree with.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) has come to the defense of country star Jason Aldean as he faces down a cancel campaign over his song “Try That in a Small Town.”

In a video shared to Twitter on Wednesday, Noem said that she could not believe people have orchestrated a cancel campaign against Jason Aldean.

“I am shocked by what I’m seeing in this country with people attempting to cancel this song and cancel Jason and his beliefs,” Noem said. “Him and Brittany are outspoken about their love for law and order and for their love of this country and I’m just grateful for them.”

Noem then invited Aldean to perform anywhere in her state of South Dakota.

“I think a lot of times people who go out and fight every day on these important issues and have an opinion and remember the freedom and liberty that this country was founded on get persecuted for it and we’re seeing that right now with the Aldean’s and the songwriters that worked so hard on this,” Noem said.

“I just want them to know that we support them, we love them, thank you for writing a song that America can get behind,” she added.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has also come out in support of Aldean. “Cancel culture is the enemy of freedom of expression. I stand with Jason Aldean,” she announced on Twitter.

The video features Aldean performing in front of a courthouse amid interspersed footage of “a flag burning, protesters screaming and attacking police in various scenarios, and robbing a convenience store,” according to Billboard.

Later in the video, a Fox News chyron appears with the words “state of emergency declared in Georgia.” Aldean’s video juxtaposes these violent images with more harmonious scenes like a girl playing hopscotch and a raised American flag. Critics of the song took issue with several lyrics wherein Aldean calls out criminals and rioters directly. Per Billboard:

Aldean addressed the controversy over his song after CMT removed it from circulation on Tuesday in a lengthy message on his Instagram Stories.

“I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous,” he said.

The blockbuster film Sound of Freedom has gained an enthusiastic new fan — former President Donald Trump, who praised the anti-child trafficking drama as a “great movie” and “an incredible inspiration” during a special screening Wednesday evening at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Trump kicked off the evening in trademark style, making a grand entrance at his club’s main dining room to an avalanche of fans and well-wishers.

He then sat down to dinner with the Sound of Freedom team.

The former president started the screening with a few words about his 2024 re-election campaign.

“We’re leading by 50 points,” he said. “It’s been pretty crazy out there. It’s a vicious world. These are vicious people, these are very sick people — they’re deranged. We have a lot of them out who really don’t stand for what we stand for. But for some reason, the public understands it better than they’ve ever understood it before and are stepping up like I’ve never seen before.”

He added: “We won the first time and then we did much better the second time… but the election was rigged — you can say what you want, it doesn’t matter. But the election was rigged. And we’re going to do it a third time. I will say this: we’ve never had the kind of spirit, love, the enthusiasm that we have right now.”

President Trump sat in the front row of the outdoor screening, flanked by the movie’s star, Jim Caviezel, and director, Alejandro Gómez Monteverde, along with the movie’s real-life inspiration — Tim Ballard, the former Homeland Security agent who quit his job in order to devote himself to rescuing children from sex trafficking rings and bringing their kidnappers to justice.

A visibly moved Trump — who didn’t budge from his seat for the movie’s entire running time— addressed the audience of several hundred supporters and club members after the final credits rolled.

“I hope you enjoyed it. It’s something I’m not sure if you’re supposed to enjoy or learn — it’s a combination. But that was a great movie,” he said. “Now I understand why it’s doing so well.”

Trump also praised Caviezel, saying “it was an honor getting to know you.”

“I hope everyone had a fantastic time. It’s an incredible inspiration,” Trump concluded.

Sound of Freedom has emerged as the surprise box-office success of the summer, easily beating much bigger studio releases, including Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Paramount’s latest Mission: Impossible sequel on a per-screen basis.

Released by Angel Studios, the company behind the hit faith-based series The Chosen , the independently financed Sound of Freedomhas grossed $80 million in two weeks and is expected to pass the $100 million mark in a matter of days, making it one of the most successful indie films of the past decade.

But its popularity has inevitably resulted in attacks from the mainstream news media, which first ignored the movie and then sought to smear it as a “QAnon” fantasy, even though the film was shot five years ago before the term had gained prominence.

The movie’s power was clearly not lost on the audience at Bedminster on Wednesday. Viewers broke into spontaneous applause and cheers at key moments, including Caviezel’s retort that has become the movie’s tagline — “God’s children are not for sale.”

Among the prominent faces in the audience were Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) and former White House chief strategist (and former Breitbart News executive chairman) Steve Bannon. First daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner stopped by. Conservative influencer Jack Posobiec was also on hand.

Pastor Paula White — who served as Trump’s Christian advisor — led the audience in a prayer just before the screening began.
