Veteran U.S. diplomat Henry Kissinger met with Chinese President Xi Jinping Thursday during a surprise visit to Beijing, state media reported.

Details of the talks were not disclosed, though a statement praised Kissinger as a “legendary diplomat.”

The meeting comes two days after spontaneous talks between Kissinger and China’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu on Tuesday.

 

Veteran U.S. diplomat Henry Kissinger met with Chinese President Xi Jinping Thursday during a surprise visit to Beijing, according to state media.

West not prepared for conflict with China – FT

The US has only a week’s worth of anti-ship missiles, one think tank has estimated

 

Ammunition shortages laid bare by the Ukraine conflict have prompted some US think-tanks to check on stockpiles in the West and find them wanting, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The military industry of NATO allies is not able to help, either.

 

A Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) wargame of a conflict with China over Taiwan showed that the US had only about 450 long-range anti-ship missiles, enough for about a week.

 

Another think tank, the Center for New American Security (CNAS), said the existing missile inventory is “too small to blunt an initial invasion, let alone prevail in a protracted conflict against China.” To deter and defeat Beijing, the Pentagon “needs large stockpiles of stand-off missiles, maritime strike weapons, and layered air and missile defenses,” CNAS concluded.

 

According to the FT, the US Department of Defense has asked for $1.1 billion in the 2024 fiscal year to buy 118 long-range anti-ship missiles (LRASM), compared to half that amount for 83 missiles the year before. The Pentagon also wants $30 billion for ammunition, a 23% increase over 2023 levels, and $315 billion for new weapons.

 

CNAS has noted that the Pentagon tends to prioritize big-ticket items such as ships, planes and tanks, “leaving missiles and munitions with inadequate funding.”

 

The FT revealed that Western powers have spent a combined $170 billion on military and financial aid to Ukraine since February 2022. Kiev is still complaining about ammunition shortages, however.

 

The US military-industrial complex has spent decades prioritizing efficiency and adopting the just-in-time supply chain used by other industries, according to the FT, leaving it unable to scale up production in wartime. Parts and labor shortages are currently a problem as well.

 

“The defense industry is so consolidated that it can’t very quickly expand to support a greater demand,” said Stacie Pettyjohn of CNAS. “So we’re slow and behind and don’t have enough of anything.”Only five companies are responsible for major Pentagon contracts, and some parts are made by only one or two suppliers, with no way to make up the shortage elsewhere.

 

NATO allies are unable to step in and pick up the slack, because the US push to promote American-made weapons has left the European defense industry stunted and fractured, multiple think-tank experts told the FT.

West to shift Ukraine weapons strategy

The US and its allies are setting up repair facilities and translating manuals for foreign hardware, the Pentagon’s acquisition chief says

 

The US and its allies are pivoting from delivering more weapons to Ukraine to fixing Western hardware that has already been sent to Kiev and damaged during the conflict with Russia, Politico has reported.

 

Ukraine has been having problems with maintaining the “international hodgepodge of equipment” provided to it by the US, Germany, UK, Poland and many other countries since the start of the fighting in February 2022, the US news website noted in an article on Wednesday.

 

The ability to quickly fix the damaged hardware has become even more crucial since the launch of the counteroffensive in early June, which has proven “difficult” for Kiev’s forces and “led to some well-publicized losses of US-made Bradley fighting vehicles and hulking mine-resistant troop carriers, along with some damaged German Leopard tanks,”it said.

 

The Pentagon’s acquisition and sustainment chief, William LaPlante, told Politico that in order to assist Ukraine, the US and its allies are “setting up repair facilities in Europe, we’re translating [training and repair] manuals, we have to do much more together so there’s going to be more of a focus on that.”

 

Politico described LaPlante as leading a “22-nation working group, led by the US, Poland and the UK,” tasked with making sure that Western-supplied weapons remain in working order during Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.

 

“We have regular conversations” with Kiev, the Pentagon official said. “What more do they need? Are there more parts we can send? We’re actually tracking what’s called the availability rate of each one of these systems,”in near real-time.

 

The group has already assisted Ukraine in setting up a support effort to track over 4,000 supply lines for high-demand spare parts for foreign hardware, according to the report. The US has also translated into Ukrainian over 700 technical manuals for the weapons sent to Kiev, so that local technicians can fix them on the spot.

 

“We’re making sure that they [the Ukrainians] have everything that they need. And if the parts have to come from a country halfway around the world, we make sure we get it to them. So the sustainment is actually most of the work going on right now,” LaPlante said.

 

However, at the moment “much of the most serious repair work still needs to be shipped to places such as Poland or Czechia before making the long trip back to Ukraine,” Politico added.

EU could shift military training centers to Ukraine – media

The bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, wants to propose the scenario in the event of a ceasefire, Germany’s DPA news agency has claimed

 

The EU could consider moving a training program for Kiev’s troops to Ukrainian territory in the future, Germany’s DPA news agency has reported. Brussels may also agree to funnel billions more euros into supporting the Ukrainian military in the years to come, it added.

 

In a report on Thursday, DPA claimed that the bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, was ready to propose a considerable extension to the existing training program for the Ukrainian military during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels later in the day.

 

According to the media outlet, which claims to have seen a document listing Borrell’s proposals, “when the circumstances allow, a gradual relocation of the training activities to Ukraine could even be considered.”

 

This scenario could materialize if and when there is a ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow, the German news agency claimed. The reported logic behind the idea is that it could act as a deterrent against any future Russian incursions, as service members from EU nations would be stationed in Ukraine as well.

 

In addition, Borrell reportedly plans to call for member states to pay for more weapons deliveries to Kiev, including modern fighter jets. According to DPA, Borrell wants some €5 billion ($5.6 billion) earmarked to this end annually between 2024 and 2027. The money would supposedly come from the EU’s Peace Facility (EPF).

 

Among the other proposals Borrell is reportedly expected to make on Thursday is setting “new quantitative and qualitative training targets” for EU nations. DPA noted that the bloc had originally pledged to train 30,000 Ukrainian service members, with 25,000 troops having already finished their courses or due to finish shortly.

 

According to the German outlet, the diplomat also wants to see closer cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in terms of arms production and intelligence sharing.

 

Meanwhile, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto made it clear on Wednesday that Budapest would block a new €500 million tranche of EU military aid for Ukraine unless Kiev removed a Hungarian bank from its “sponsors of war” list. Ukrainian authorities added the designation to OTP bank in May over its alleged operations in Russia.

 

Russia has consistently argued that Western support for Ukraine will only serve to prolong the bloodshed.

Pentagon memo reveals special treatment for trans soldiers

The Biden administration reversed its predecessor’s ban on trans people in the military amid historically low recruitment

 

The Pentagon has extended special privileges to transgender service members including exemptions from readiness requirements and even the obligation to deploy, according to a new memo published by The Dossier on Tuesday.

 

Transgender servicemembers may secure a waiver from both grooming and uniform standards in order to obtain the “real life experience” deemed necessary to continue with medical transition, according to the 34-page document. While not classified, it was not previously available to the public and represents updated guidance as of February.

 

They may also obtain a waiver from physical fitness standards if experiencing negative side effects from hormone treatment, and these waivers can be renewed every six months.

 

A transitioning service member can even avoid deployment entirely while taking cross-sex hormones during their transition. They are considered “non-deployable” for a minimum of 300 days during this period, or until considered “stabilized” on the hormone cocktail.

 

The military pays for every medical procedure involved in transitioning gender from psychological counseling to “voice feminization surgery,” the memo explains, with full transition time expected to take from 9 to 18 months.

 

While the Womack Army Medical Center, which authored the document, acknowledges that Defense Department facilities are not equipped to perform complex procedures like vaginoplasty or phalloplasty, it simply instructs the medical provider to refer them to the military’s extensive network of civilian practitioners instead. Only in the case of laser hair removal is the procedure not covered by the taxpayer.

 

While a recruit may identify as non-binary or gender-fluid, they are required to select a gender marker of male or female – not because the Pentagon wishes to “misgender or disrespect a [servicemember’s] gender identity,” but because “the current medical and Army system views gender as a dichotomous variable,” the memo notes.

 

President Donald Trump had banned transgender individuals from serving in the US military in 2017. His successor Joe Biden reversed the ban shortly after taking office in 2021. Though the Pentagon repealed its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011, allowing gay and lesbian troops to serve openly, gender dysphoria was still considered cause for involuntary discharge from the service until 2016.

 

All branches of the US military are currently facing some of the worst recruiting shortfalls in their history. Republican lawmakers have blamed the problem on the Pentagon’s prioritization of diversity, equity and inclusion over military readiness.

This magnificent spiral galaxy is Messier 64, often called the Black Eye Galaxy or the Sleeping Beauty Galaxy for its dark-lidded appearance in telescopic views. The spiral's central region, about 7,400 light-years across, is pictured in this reprocessed image from the Hubble Space Telescope. M64 lies some 17 million light-years distant in the otherwise well-groomed northern constellation Coma Berenices. The enormous dust clouds partially obscuring M64's central region are laced with young, blue star clusters and the reddish glow of hydrogen associated with star forming regions. But imposing clouds of dust are not this galaxy's only peculiar feature. Observations show that M64 is actually composed of two concentric, counter-rotating systems. While all the stars in M64 rotate in the same direction as the interstellar gas in the galaxy's central region, gas in the outer regions, extending to about 40,000 light-years, rotates in the opposite direction. The dusty eye and bizarre rotation are likely the result of a billion year old merger of two different galaxies.

Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) defended censorship on Thursday, arguing that certain views should not enjoy the free speech protections of the First Amendment, which she said was limited by the Supreme Court.

Plaskett, the ranking member of the minority on the House Weaponization Subcommittee, attacked the alleged views of one of the witnesses, Democratic Party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, calling them hateful.

 

“This is not the free speech that I know of,” she said. She recalled a recent controversyover remarks Kennedy made about the coronavirus affecting some population groups more than others, among other past comments.

 

Plaskett continued: “Free speech is not an absolute. The Supreme Court has stated that.” (The Court has not restricted the content of speech, but a “time, place, and manner” exceptions for the way speech is expressed.)

 

The ranking member went on to claim that Republicans had not invited Kennedy to testify because he had been censored on social media, but rather to associate themselves with his controversial views. She also claimed that past witnesses interviewed by the committee, such as would-be “disinformation czar” Nina Jancowicz, had been subjected to death threats, and implied that committee chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) supported those threats.

 

Republicans were not interested in defending free speech, Plaskett said. Rather, their goal was to force social media companies to promote “any conspiracy theories, no matter how harmful.”

 

She added: “They want to force social media companies to promote conspiracy theories because they think that’s the only way their candidate can win the 2020 [sic] election.” She said that Congress should be focused instead on issues like inflation.

 

In response, Kennedy devoted his opening statement to defending his record and noting that he had also been censored for talking about ordinary subjects. The purpose of free speech, he noted, was to protect speech that people did not agree with.

Many of us remember that special day on July 20, 1969 when our feelings of awe were palpable as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took small steps for man and giant leaps for mankind.

 

The historic Apollo 11 tour went down in world history, and will always be known as one of the most important space missions of all time. The moonwalk was spectacularly important for NASA, science, and society as a whole. In addition,the first trip to the moon was also important for Freemasonry. Why? Because the Apollo 11 mission to the moon was piloted by none other than Buzz Aldrin, an active Freemason.

 

Both Feet on the Ground

 

You might know him as one of the first men on the moon, but we know him as the first Mason on the moon. Brother Edwin Eugene (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr. was an active Mason and is a member of Clear Lake Lodge No. 1417, AF&AM in Seabrook, Texas. He was born January 20, 1930 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating third in his class in 1951. Brother Aldrin later went on to receive a PhD in Astronautics from M.I.T. in 1963. He served in the Korean War and and is credited with two enemy fighter kills during his tour.

 

Brother Aldrin was initiated into Freemasonry at Oak Park Lodge No. 864 in Alabama and raised at Lawrence N. Greenleaf Lodge, No. 169 in Colorado. He is also a member of York Rite and Arabia Shrine Temple of Houston.

 

Shooting for the Moon

 

On the crest of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, The Grand Master of Texas approved Brother Aldrin’s request to open a Representation of the Grand Lodge of Texas on the Moon and, thereby, establish Masonic Territorial Jurisdiction there. He also asked Buzz to carry a special deputation on his journey. Aldrin signed this deputation and confirmed that it was, indeed, carried to the moon.

 

Aldrin also carried a handmade silk Masonic flag with him on his space journey, embroidered with the words, “Supreme Council, 33°, Southern Jurisdiction, USA.” After his mission on September 16, 1969, Brother Aldrin visited the House of the Temple in Washington, DC, and presented the flag to Grand Commander Luther Smith. The flag is now located in the archives of the House of the Temple.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) has come to the defense of country star Jason Aldean as he faces down a cancel campaign over his song “Try That in a Small Town.”

 

In a video shared to Twitter on Wednesday, Noem said that she could not believe people have orchestrated a cancel campaign against Jason Aldean.

 

“I am shocked by what I’m seeing in this country with people attempting to cancel this song and cancel Jason and his beliefs,” Noem said. “Him and Brittany are outspoken about their love for law and order and for their love of this country and I’m just grateful for them.”

 

Noem then invited Aldean to perform anywhere in her state of South Dakota.

 

“I think a lot of times people who go out and fight every day on these important issues and have an opinion and remember the freedom and liberty that this country was founded on get persecuted for it and we’re seeing that right now with the Aldean’s and the songwriters that worked so hard on this,” Noem said.

 

“I just want them to know that we support them, we love them, thank you for writing a song that America can get behind,” she added.

 

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has also come out in support of Aldean. “Cancel culture is the enemy of freedom of expression. I stand with Jason Aldean,” she announced on Twitter.

As Breitbart News reported, CMT recently pulled the music video for Jason Aldean’s new single “Try That In a Small Town,” which aggressively attacks recent riots and rising lawlessness in the United States. The video features Aldean performing in front of a courthouse amid interspersed footage of “a flag burning, protesters screaming and attacking police in various scenarios, and robbing a convenience store,” according to Billboard.

 

Later in the video, a Fox News chyron appears with the words “state of emergency declared in Georgia.” Aldean’s video juxtaposes these violent images with more harmonious scenes like a girl playing hopscotch and a raised American flag. Critics of the song took issue with several lyrics wherein Aldean calls out criminals and rioters directly. Per Billboard:

 

Written by Kelly Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, Tully Kennedy and Kurt Michael Allison, the song is an often confrontational take, with lyrics challenging those who “carjack an old lady at a red light” or “pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store” or “cuss out a cop” to try that in a small town and “see how far ya make it down the road/ around here, we take care of our own.”

 

In a later verse, Aldean, who was on stage when the worst gun massacre in U.S. history took place at the Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, 2017, sings, “Got a gun that my granddad gave me/ They say one day they’re gonna round up/ Well, that sh-t might fly in the city/ Good luck.”

 

Aldean addressed the controversy over his song after CMT removed it from circulation on Tuesday in a lengthy message on his Instagram Stories.

 

“I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous,” he said.

 

Aldean asserted that he never brought race into the song and that he used real news footage.

 

“NO ONE, including me, wants to continue to see senseless headlines or families ripped apart. … ‘Try That In A Small Town,’ for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief,” he said.

 

Country singer and gun control singer Sheryl Crow, however, called his song “lame” while accusing him of promoting violence.

Former President Donald Trump came to the defense of country star Jason Aldean after he fell subject to a cancel campaign over his recent song “Try That in a Small Town.”

 

Hailing Aldean a “fantastic guy,” the former president urged people on Truth Social to get out and support his music. “Jason Aldean is a fantastic guy who just came out with a great new song.Support Jason all the way. MAGA!!!” he said.

 

Aldean has received support from several politicians, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

 

As Breitbart News reported, CMT recently pulled the music video for Jason Aldean’s new single “Try That In a Small Town,” which aggressively attacks recent riots and rising lawlessness in the United States. The video features Aldean performing in front of a courthouse amid interspersed footage of “a flag burning, protesters screaming and attacking police in various scenarios, and robbing a convenience store,” according to Billboard.

 

Later in the video, a Fox News chyron appears with the words “state of emergency declared in Georgia.” Aldean’s video juxtaposes these violent images with more harmonious scenes like a girl playing hopscotch and a raised American flag. Critics of the song took issue with several lyrics wherein Aldean calls out criminals and rioters directly. Per Billboard:

 

Written by Kelly Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, Tully Kennedy and Kurt Michael Allison, the song is an often confrontational take, with lyrics challenging those who “carjack an old lady at a red light” or “pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store” or “cuss out a cop” to try that in a small town and “see how far ya make it down the road/ around here, we take care of our own.”

 

In a later verse,Aldean, who was on stage when the worst gun massacre in U.S. history took place at the Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, 2017, sings, “Got a gun that my granddad gave me/ They say one day they’re gonna round up/ Well, that sh-t might fly in the city/ Good luck.”

 

Aldean addressed the controversy over his song after CMT removed it from circulation on Tuesday in a lengthy message on his Instagram Stories.

 

“I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject too the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless, but dangerous,” he said.

 

Aldean asserted that he never brought race into the song and that he used real news footage.…

The pandemic of the disease COVID-19 (COronaVIrus Disease 2019) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) resulted in millions of deaths and many patients have chronic consequences after overcoming the acute condition. Several vaccines have been developed in an effort to stop the spread of the virus, but they have potentially serious adverse effects. We present a case report of a patient with acute (myocarditis, exacerbation of bronchial asthma) and long-term (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome - POTS) complications after vaccination with the second dose of mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 (Comirnaty®). Treatment consists of regimen measures, numerous pharmacotherapy (metoprolol, ivabradine, corticosteroids, antihistamines, antiphlogistics, bronchodilators) and several nutraceuticals (maritime pine bark extract, quercetin, vitamins, magnesium, phosphatidylcholine). In the discussion, we analyze post-vaccination injury and present a short review of the current literature.

Trump kicked off the evening in trademark style, making a grand entrance at his club’s main dining room to an avalanche of fans and well-wishers.

 

He then sat down to dinner with the Sound of Freedom team.

 

The former president started the screening with a few words about his 2024 re-election campaign.

 

“We’re leading by 50 points,” he said. “It’s been pretty crazy out there. It’s a vicious world. These are vicious people, these are very sick people — they’re deranged. We have a lot of them out who really don’t stand for what we stand for. But for some reason, the public understands it better than they’ve ever understood it before and are stepping up like I’ve never seen before.”

 

He added: “We won the first time and then we did much better the second time… but the election was rigged — you can say what you want, it doesn’t matter. But the election was rigged. And we’re going to do it a third time. I will say this: we’ve never had the kind of spirit, love, the enthusiasm that we have right now.”

 

President Trump sat in the front row of the outdoor screening, flanked by the movie’s star, Jim Caviezel, and director, Alejandro Gómez Monteverde, along with the movie’s real-life inspiration — Tim Ballard, the former Homeland Security agent who quit his job in order to devote himself to rescuing children from sex trafficking rings and bringing their kidnappers to justice.

 

A visibly moved Trump — who didn’t budge from his seat for the movie’s entire running time— addressed the audience of several hundred supporters and club members after the final credits rolled.

 

“I hope you enjoyed it. It’s something I’m not sure if you’re supposed to enjoy or learn — it’s a combination. But that was a great movie,” he said. “Now I understand why it’s doing so well.”

 

Trump also praised Caviezel, saying “it was an honor getting to know you.”

Sound of Freedom has emerged as the surprise box-office success of the summer, easily beating much bigger studio releases, including Disney’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Paramount’s latest Mission: Impossible sequel on a per-screen basis.

 

Released by Angel Studios, the company behind the hit faith-based series The Chosen , the independently financed Sound of Freedomhas grossed $80 million in two weeks and is expected to pass the $100 million mark in a matter of days, making it one of the most successful indie films of the past decade.

 

But its popularity has inevitably resulted in attacks from the mainstream news media, which first ignored the movie and then sought to smear it as a “QAnon” fantasy, even though the film was shot five years ago before the term had gained prominence.

 

The movie’s power was clearly not lost on the audience at Bedminster on Wednesday. Viewers broke into spontaneous applause and cheers at key moments, including Caviezel’s retort that has become the movie’s tagline — “God’s children are not for sale.”

 

Among the prominent faces in the audience were Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) and former White House chief strategist (and former Breitbart News executive chairman) Steve Bannon. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), astronomers have found the possible ‘sibling’ of a planet orbiting a distant star. The team has detected a cloud of debris that might be sharing this planet’s orbit and which, they believe, could be the building blocks of a new planet or the remnants of one already formed. If confirmed, this discovery would be the strongest evidence yet that two exoplanets can share one orbit.

 

“Two decades ago it was predicted in theory that pairs of planets of similar mass may share the same orbit around their star, the so-called Trojan or co-orbital planets. For the first time, we have found evidence in favour of that idea,” says Olga Balsalobre-Ruza, a student at the Centre for Astrobiology in Madrid, Spain who led the paper published today in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

 

Trojans, rocky bodies in the same orbit as a planet, are common in our own Solar System [1], the most famous example being the Trojan asteroids of Jupiter — more than 12 000 rocky bodies that are in the same orbit around the Sun as the gas giant. Astronomers have predicted that Trojans, in particular Trojan planets, could also exist around a star other than our Sun, but evidence for them is scant. “Exotrojans [Trojan planets outside the Solar System] have so far been like unicorns: they are allowed to exist by theory but no one has ever detected them,” says co-author Jorge Lillo-Box, a senior researcher at the Centre for Astrobiology.

 

Now, an international team of scientists have used ALMA, in which ESO is a partner, to find the strongest observational evidence yet that Trojan planets could exist — in the PDS 70 system. This young star is known to host two giant, Jupiter-like planets, PDS 70b and PDS 70c. By analysing archival ALMA observations of this system, the team spotted a cloud of debris at the location in PDS 70b’s orbit where Trojans are expected to exist.

 

Trojans occupy the so-called Lagrangian zones, two extended regions in a planet's orbit where the combined gravitational pull of the star and the planet can trap material. Studying these two regions of PDS 70b’s orbit, astronomers detected a faint signal from one of them, indicating that a cloud of debris with a mass up to roughly two times that of our Moon might reside there.

 

The team believes this cloud of debris could point to an existing Trojan world in this system, or a planet in the process of forming. “Who could imagine two worlds that share the duration of the year and the habitability conditions? Our work is the first evidence that this kind of world could exist,” says Balsalobre-Ruza. “We can imagine that a planet can share its orbit with thousands of asteroids as in the case of Jupiter, but it is mind blowing to me that planets could share the same orbit.”

 

“Our research is a first step to look for co-orbital planets very early in their formation,” says co-author Nuria Huélamo, a senior researcher at the Centre for Astrobiology. "It opens up new questions on the formation of Trojans, how they evolve and how frequent they are in different planetary systems,” adds Itziar De Gregorio-Monsalvo, ESO Head of the Office for Science in Chile, who also contributed to this research.

 

To fully confirm their detection, the team will need to wait until after 2026, when they will aim to use ALMA to see if both PDS 70b and its sibling cloud of debris move significantly along their orbit together around the star. “This would be a breakthrough in the exoplanetary field,” says Balsalobre-Ruza.

 

"The future of this topic is very exciting and we look forward to the extended ALMA capabilities, planned for 2030, which will dramatically improve the array’s ability to characterise Trojans in many other stars," concludes De Gregorio-Monsalvo.

North Korea’s defence minister said Thursday the current port visit of a US nuclear-capable submarine to South Korea could meet the legal conditions under which Pyongyang would use its nuclear weapons.

 

Relations between the two Koreas are at one of their lowest points ever, with diplomacy stalled and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un calling for increased weapons development, including tactical nuclear weapons.

 

The United States and South Korea have stepped up displays of military muscle in response, and a US nuclear-capable submarine made a port call to South Korea this week for the first time since 1981.

 

Pyongyang’s defence minister Kang Sun Nam said the arrival in Busan port of a US Ohio-class submarine “may fall under the conditions of the use of nuclear weapons specified in the DPRK law on the nuclear force policy”, referring to North Korea by its official name.

 

North Korea last year adopted a sweeping nuclear law, setting out an array of scenarios in which it could use its nukes, including pre-emptive nuclear strikes if threatened.

 

Kang said the presence of the sub was an “undisguised and direct nuclear threat to the DPRK”, and meant that “strategic nuclear weapons have been deployed on the Korean peninsula for the first time after 40 odd years”.

 

“The US military side should realise that its nuclear assets have entered extremely dangerous waters,” he said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

 

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the Ohio-class submarine Wednesday, and warned Pyongyang that were it to use nuclear weapons against the South, “it will lead to the demise of its regime”.

 

Ohio-class subs can carry up to 20 Trident II ballistic missiles. The US Navy typically does not confirm if a submarine is carrying nuclear weapons before it goes out to sea.

 

The allies also held their first Nuclear Consultative Group meeting in Seoul Tuesday, to improve their joint response to any nuclear attack by North Korea.

 

– ‘Direct, outright threat’ –

It appears that the deployment of the submarine has rattled the North, Hong Min, a researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification, told AFP.

 

“Pyongyang’s message is that the US and South Korea are acting in a manner that is bringing the North closer to consider invoking its nuclear weapons use guidelines,” he said.

 

“Yoon’s comment during his visit to the submarine mentioning the end of the North Korean regime appears to have rattled Pyongyang a lot, prompting it to react much more aggressively.”

 

North Korea has conducted a string of banned weapons tests this year, including twice launching its newest solid fuel Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile.

 

Seoul and Washington have ramped up defence cooperation in response, staging joint military exercises with advanced stealth jets and US strategic assets.

 

Washington first announced it would deploy a submarine capable of launching ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads to the Korean peninsula in April, while Yoon was on a state visit.

 

North Korea baulks at having US nuclear assets deployed around the Korean peninsula.

 

Kang said that for Washington and Seoul, “any use of their military muscle against the DPRK will be their most miserable choice by which they will have no room to think of their existence again”.

 

Pyongyang’s statement comes as an American soldier, Travis King, is believed to be in North Korean custody after crossing the border during a tourist trip to the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarised Zone on Tuesday.

 

Pyongyang has a long history of detaining Americans and using them as bargaining chips in bilateral ties. It has not yet issued any comment on King.

 

The US-led United Nations Command has said it is working with North Korea’s military to “resolve this incident”.

 

But with relations between Pyongyang and Washington at one of their lowest points in years, experts say it will be difficult to gain consular access to King.

 

In addition, nearly all foreign embassies in Pyongyang withdrew foreign staff after North Korea closed its borders in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

That includes Sweden, which handles US consular affairs in the North Korean capital.

Two young brothers imprisoned in their feces-covered Wisconsin home raised the alarm by smashing their way out of a window — walking naked through the street like “cavemen” who’d “never seen the sun before,” according to distressing court documents.

Multiple neighbors called 911 after seeing the boys, ages 7 and 9, walking naked outside their Milwaukee home last Thursday, according to a criminal complaint detailing multiple felony charges against their mom, Katie Koch, 34, and stepdad, Joel Manke, 38.

The boys were bruised and bloodied and had so much feces in their hair, it had to be shaved off in a hospital, the affidavit said.

A 13-year-old girl told cops that she saw a “naked person walking on the sidewalk like a ‘caveman,'” the document stated.

“Like they had never seen the sun before,” the same young witness also told WDJT, while another neighbor who’d been there 30 years said he had no idea there were even kids in the house.

Responding cops described the boys’ home as a “terrible hoarding situation” — with feces covering the walls and so much trash that officers “had a difficult time seeing the floor.”

The 7-year-old boy was put in a diaper, and the boys’ bedroom had a lock outside as well as boarded-up windows, the affidavit said.

“It was something out of a horror movie,” Assistant District Attorney Mallory Davis told an initial hearing for the mom and stepdad, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“These children were essentially confined to their room for much of their lives.”

Manke, the stepdad, admitted in interviews to boarding up the windows and locking the boys in their room, the affidavit said.

He “stated that he knew how the children were living was not right but he had to ‘pick his battles’ with [their mom] Koch to avoid arguments,” officers stated.

“Manke stated that he never contacted police or schools to report the children because he doesn’t believe in doing that to family members.”

'Something out of a horror movie': Mother and boyfriend accused of imprisoning children in Milwaukee home for years

A Milwaukee mother and her boyfriend are facing multiple felony charges for allegedly imprisoning two children in their home for years.

Katie Koch, 34, is the mother of the children. She's facing four felony counts and two misdemeanors connected to child neglect and false imprisonment. Joel Manke, 38, is facing four felony counts.

According to the criminal complaint, another neighbor first saw the children looking through a shattered window last Thursday, July 13, then climb onto the air conditioning unit. They then jumped into the yard and walked down the street naked.

A child witness said the children two boys ages 7 and 9 "were acting like cavemen, like they had never seen the sun before."

On Monday, July 17, neighbors described what they saw when the children escaped the home.

Christine Eder lives across the street. She said it looked like "they had never been outside before. If they have been, it's been a very long time."

Eder said it took a moment for her to process what she was seeing when two boys stumbled away from a usually quiet house across the street.

She said, "They were just walking different. Their hair looked like it had never been brushed, never been cut. They didn't know the outside existed."

She said she had her husband call 911 while she kept eyes on the boys.

In Milwaukee County intake court Monday, the assistant district attorney described the living conditions like something out of a horror movie.

Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Mallory Davis said the children were essentially confined to their room for much of their lives. The windows were boarded up and door was locked from the outside. Responding officers described it as "a terrible hoarding situation" in which they could not see the floor.

A responding officer said the kitchen and living room were piled with garbage, and the smell of feces and urine filled the home. Trash was also piled outside the children's room, which locked from the outside; inside, the walls were smeared with feces.

Koch told officers the children had broken a window and ran away.

When asked what she knew about Manke and Koch, Eder said, "Absolutely nothing. I never saw her or him. Ever."

Joel Manke said he's lived in the home since 2007. Koch told investigators she and her children moved in about four years ago.

Some of the neighbors interviewed said they didn't even know children lived in the home during that time.

In an interview with investigators, Manke said he knew that how the children were living was not right, but that he had to "pick his battles" with Koch to avoid arguments.

He also said Koch had never taken the children to a doctor in the years she had lived with him, nor had they been to school in that time. Koch told investigators that she homeschooled the children.

She also "admitted that the home is not habitable," and said "her boys deserve better".

Conditions were so poor that after the children were taken into protective custody, their heads had to be shaved because their hair was so matted with feces.

"These children have been horribly damaged from their mother's actions. They are completely uneducated. They are not potty trained, even at their ages. They are, essentially at this point, unable to function in society," said Davis.

Eder said her usually-close-knit neighborhood is now redoubling efforts to be aware of their surroundings. She added, "I'm glad wherever they are they're taken care of, and I hope someone is taking them outside."

In court Monday, the court commissioner set a $30,000 cash bail for Koch. A public defender said Koch has no money to post bail. Manke's cash bail was set at $6,500. Their preliminary hearings are set for July 26. If convicted on all felony counts, Koch and Manke each face fines totaling $120,000 and 43.5 years in prison. Koch faces an additional $20,000 in fines and 18 months in prison for the two misdemeanor counts.

On Tuesday, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson commented on what happened.

"I'm glad that those children were able to escape, that's a terrible, unfortunate situation. No kid should have to endure that sort of experience, especially not with relatives of theirs, in any home, in any community in Milwaukee, or Wisconsin, or the United States," said Johnson. "I hope those people who were responsible, their parents, see some justice on this."
