AWAKE - The Advanced (Proton Driven Plasma) Wakefield Acceleration Experiment - begins its second run with an upgraded plasma source
The experiment sends proton beams from the Super Proton Synchrotron through plasma cells to generate so-called wakefields, which accelerate a second beam โ the โwitnessโ electron beam. Its new rubidium vapour plasma allows stronger wakefields to be obtained.
The next step is to demonstrate that AWAKE can accelerate electrons to high energies and control the beam quality, which would open the possibility of real physics applications.
