An entire operation grinds to a halt…

An Incident within an incident is ongoing on a California fire right now. I can assure you that the fire management is doing what they can to remedy this disaster, but it’s still a giant mess. I do not envy the task they have in front of them.

 

Over the last 24 hours, Hotshot buggies, Engines, Support Trucks, Tenders, Supt Trucks, UTVs, and everything else have been shut down on the Smith River Complex. A fuel tender, either out of incompetence or just sheer horrible luck, filled hundreds of diesel vehicles with gas and gas vehicles with diesel.

 

Crews are stranded on the mountain while they wait their turn for the mobile mechanics to fix their trucks. The fire has taken a tactical pause.

Again, this may have affected over 100 vehicles. Fire crews that have hit their day 14 are still stuck on the side of mountain roads, spiked out, waiting to become mobile again. For a lot of these vehicles, simply pumping the tanks out is not enough. Likely, some are wrecked, and this incident has ground to a halt.

 

This is the definition of a shitshow, and they are very fortunate the fire is not ripping right now.

 

A couple of weeks ago, I reported on the massive issues with the caterers in fire camps this year due to the “cheapest option first” policy. I sure hope this fuel issue was just a horrible mistake and not a sign of things to come due to a “lowest fuel bidder” policy.

 

I’m sure the Team is not very happy, obviously. The fuel contractors are probably having nightmares right now. I would absolutely hate to be in their shoes. But this one incident within an incident has brought an entire operation to its knees. Stranded crews, people timing out can’t leave, and crews spiked out waiting for a solution while their trucks sit dead.

 

A California nightmare.

"Russia has deployed 46 launchers of the Iskander missile complex along the border with Ukraine," Deputy Head of the State Security Service Vadym Skibitskyi said.
