The capital city's ranking has dropped significantly over the years, ranking 109th in 2021, 101st in 2020, and 99th in 2019.

 

The report, published by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in collaboration with the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO), placed Rabat seventeen places lower than in 2021.

The capital city's ranking has dropped significantly over the years, with the city ranking 109th in 2021, 101st in 2020, and 99th in 2019.

The IMD Smart City Index 2023 assesses residents' perceptions of the structures and technology applications available in their city. 20,000 citizens were surveyed about their cities' living conditions and their top priorities, ranging from affordable housing and road congestion to fulfilling employment and green spaces, as well as various structures and technologies.

According to the report, Rabat has a human development index (HDI) of 0.702.ย 

 

For the Health and Safety Index, Rabat scored an average of 41.7. Included in this index are elements such as basic sanitation, recycling services, public safety, medical services provision, air pollution, and finding housing.

In terms of mobility technology, Rabat scored an average of 48 on the basis of apps for car sharing, parking, directions, bicycle hiring, online scheduling, and tickets, among others.

 

Meanwhile, the capital city scored 70 in the โ€œActivitiesโ€ indicator, an assessment of green spaces and cultural activities such as shows, bars, and museums.

 

Rabat received an average of 58.2 for the โ€œOpportunities (Work & School)โ€ indicator in terms of technology. This metric assesses online job availability, IT skill training in schools, online services for starting a new business, and internet speed.

Rabat obtained a poor score of 36.9 on the โ€œGovernanceโ€ index, which includes elements such as public access to information on local government decisions, corruption of city officials, residents' contributions to public decision-making, and residents' feedback on local government projects.

Apart from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, all of the cities in the top 20 are located in Europe or Asia-Pacific, the report noted, while highlighting the notable absence of American and African cities.

According to the courtโ€™s documents, the defendant, whose identity was not made public, โ€œlikedโ€ three posts on the โ€˜Odnoklassnikiโ€™ website. Banned in Ukraine, the platform is popular in Russia and some other former Soviet republics, particularly among the older population.

 

The posts in question included a social media post, a video published by Russiaโ€™s Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper and a โ€œtext and graphic material glorifyingโ€ the actions of the Russian forces in Ukraine. The woman also used a function that made all the posts she liked automatically reposted by her account, making them visible for her 178 social media friends, the court said.

 

At the court hearing, the defendant made a full confession and asked the judge not to punish her particularly harshly. She also said she was acting โ€œunder the influence of political showsโ€and did not understand in time that she was committing a crime.

 

The womanโ€™s age was not revealed by the Ukrainian judicial authorities either. The court documents only state that she was an elderly person with no prior criminal records. Apart from sentencing her to a jail time, the judge also ordered confiscation of the womanโ€™s mobile phone and a notebook and demanded she pay the court expenses amounting to 18,122 hryvnas ($491).

 

The sanctions against a number of Russian websites, such as Odnoklassniki, were imposed by Ukraineโ€™s former president, Pyotr Poroshenko, in 2017. The ban was then extended by President Vladimir Zelensky. Prior to the ban, around 24 million people โ€“ more than half of the countryโ€™s population โ€“ used Russian sites.

 

In January 2022, roughly a month before the conflict between Kiev and Moscow broke out, a Ukrainian man was slapped with a fine amounting to $350 over liking a post calling for the overthrow of the government in Kiev. The Ukrainian prosecutors charged him with undermining national security.

 

Over the course of the ongoing conflict with Russia, Kiev has further tightened its grip on the media, internet, and politics, rolling out multiple highly-restrictive laws. In December 2022, it adopted its controversial, long-debated media law, which was slammed by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)as carrying โ€œsystemic problems for democracy.โ€

September 11: American flags planted at Round Rock park honoring 9/11 victims

ROUND ROCK, Texas - A sea of red, white and blue paints Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

 

About 4,000 flags are planted at Yonder's Point, each one for a person lost because of 9/11.

Organizers said 2,977 of those flags are for the people who died on 9/11.

The rest are a tribute to those unaccounted for, including the many who struggled with PTSD from combat conditions.

The Texas Fallen Project helped put the flags up.

The founder said everyone, especially families, should stop by Monday and reflect.

 

"Everything that we've done in our past," said Bobby Withrow, founder of the Texas Fallen Project. "We need to talk about it. We need to share it. Good and bad because if we don't, we're going to do it again. So, we need to talk about it, talk to our kids about it, and hopefully one of our kids will prevent that event from happening again."

The display will remain open until Thursday.

9/11 Remembrance: Baltimore-area events paying tribute to victims, first responders

BALTIMORE - Twenty-two years ago, the world paused.

 

Nearly 3,000 people died when four commercial flights crashed after they were hijacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001.

 

Each year, we mourn those who died in crashes into the World Trade Center in New York City, into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We also celebrate those first responders who put their lives on the line to help out in the face of dangerous attacks.

 

Here are events happening on Monday in our area to memorialize those involved in 9/11:

 

Baltimore City

 

At 8:30 a.m., September 11 Commemoration: Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, first responders and the general public will remember and pay tribute to the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

"Let's honor their memory, and express our profound gratitude for our first responders; past and present, and reaffirm our commitment to unity, resilience, and hope," city leaders said in a statement.

 

The remembrance will be at 8:30 a.m. at Baltimore's World Trade Center, at 401 E. Pratt Street.

 

There will be a moment of silence at 8:45 a.m., the same time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.

 

At 9 a.m., Maryland Gov. Wes Moore will be at the Baltimore National Cemetery with U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough for a ceremony.

3 p.m., Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller will join Baltimore Orioles players and staff and First Lady Dawn Moore to assemble care packages for active military members and first responders on the field at Oriole Park, in commemoration of the September 11 National Day of Service.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m., the NFFF 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on September 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. The stair climb will be at M&T Bank Stadium, located at 1101 Russell Street.

Anne Arundel County

 

At 9:30 a.m., Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller will attend a Anne Arundel County September 11th Memorial and Wreath Laying event with First Lady Dawn Moore at the Anne Arundel County Police Department, at 8495 Veterans Highway, in Millersville.

Howard County

 

At 8:46 a.m., at the Centennial Park South, Garden of Hope, in Ellicott City, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will mark the 22nd anniversary and pay tribute to all who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, including the four victims from Howard County, with a remembrance wreath laying.

Harford County

 

At 8:30 a.m., Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly will be joined by local military leaders, volunteer fire companies and others for a wreath-laying ceremony and lead a moment of silence at Harford County's Emergency Services Facility, located at 2220 Ady Road in Forest Hill.

Ladder trucks from Fallston and Whiteford Volunteer Fire Companies will form an arch to fly the American flag from their ladders extended approximately 50 feet up for the ceremony. County Executive will lay a wreath in honor of 9/11 victims and their families. A bagpiper and local high school students will provide musical selections. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

 

Baltimore County

 

At 11 a.m., a 9/11 remembrance will take place at the Reisterstown Senior Center, located at 12035 Reisterstown Road.

At 1 p.m., America After 9/11: A documentary traces the U.S. response to the September 11 terrorist attacks and the devastating consequences that unfolded across four presidents.

This will be at the Bykota Senior Center, at 611 Central Avenue in Towson.

The Hilton San Diego Bayfront hosted the event Sunday at 8 a.m., when firefighters, police officers, military members and civilians "join together in a spirit of remembrance and courage to honor the memories of those lost 22 years ago," a statement from organizing nonprofit Firefighter Aid said.

 

The climbers each wore the name of a first responder who died on 9/11/2001.

 

"We climb in memory, and to honor each of the fallen 343 FDNY, 23 NYPD, and 37 Port Authority heroes, and to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by firefighters everywhere," the statement said.

 

Monday 9/11 Commemoration Events

At 8:15 a.m. on Monday, the University of San Diego will observe the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at an event that "will both reflect on the past and look forward to a more peaceful future," a university statement reads. "USD will honor those who died on September 11, 2001, and shine a light on current day efforts to foster peace."

 

In that spirit, the event will be held in the KIPJ Theatre at USD's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.

 

Just outside the Kroc School sits a 9/11 memorial, which includes a fountain surrounded by 3,000 glass plaques with the names and hometowns of the people who died.

 

According to the university, speakers at Monday's event include USD President James T. Harris III and San Diego City Councilman Raul Campillo. Afterward, there will be a presentation from an NROTC Color Guard, including a rendition of Taps, and an interfaith prayer.

 

At 2:30 p.m., the USS Midway Museum will hold a remembrance ceremony on the ship's flight deck in partnership with FDNY Retirees of San Diego, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, National City FD, SDFF Emerald Society and The Wounded Warrior Project. The Midway is located at 910 N. Harbor Drive.

Ohio Department of Public Safety hosts 9/11 tribute workout

OHIO โ€” The Ohio Department of Public Safety encourages everyone to participate in its annual 9-11 Climb Challenge.

The challenge was created to pay tribute to the 412 first responders who sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001, according to the departmentโ€™s website.

The challenge is a workout consisting of 100 stairs or steps, 20 burpees, 30 sit-ups, and 40 lunges or air squats.

The goal is to complete as many repetitions as possible in 41 minutes and 20 seconds, according to the website.

On Monday, September 11 at 7 a.m., there will be a live stream of opening ceremonies and a fitness event to follow along and complete the workout.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Firefighters from eight different states met in Kansas City on Sunday for the 13th annual Kansas City 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

The event is meant to honor the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

โ€œEvery year, we get further away from the events actually taking place, but never forgetting stays at the forefront of our minds,โ€ said Kevin Joles, a firefighter in Lawrence and spokesperson for the memorial climb.

 

343 firefighters climbed 110 stories at 1111 Main to honor the FDNY firefighters who perished 22 years ago.

โ€œThe whole importance of it is as youโ€™re going through the stairs, to remember, talk about stories, to show them that they are not forgotten,โ€ said Dave Bova, the event director.

This yearโ€™s event was the 13th edition of the KC Stair Climb. The event draws firefighters from across the country.

 

โ€œWe get about 60-80 departments that do it every year,โ€ Bova said. โ€œWeโ€™ve almost had every single state represented here in Kansas City. Guys drive from all over the country to be here.โ€

Firefighters make the climb in full gear, which adds about 80 pounds. They had to climb to the top of the Town Pavilion building three times.

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t take 10 minutes. It takes well over an hour,โ€ said Joles. โ€œThey are usually sticking together step by step, staircase after staircase.โ€

 

Event organizers told KCTV5 itโ€™s important for them to hold the event each year, so people remember the lives lost more than 20 years ago.

โ€œThis is going to be an event that as we get farther and farther away from it, itโ€™s going to get more difficult to continue to want to do this,โ€ said Joles. โ€œThis is a good remembrance of not only the 343 that died 22 years ago, but anyone who has fallen in the line of duty.โ€

Sandy Healing Field honors first responders, victims of 9/11 attacks

SANDY, Utah (KUTV) โ€” Several Utah cities are creating a space to honor first responders and victims who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Monday marks 22 years since the terrorist attacks on the United States.

 

In Sandy, a healing field features thousands of American flags on display just south of city hall.

The healing field was created to provide visitors with a sense of hope and a space to reflect.

 

Younger Utahns who were not alive during the attacks are also given an opportunity to learn about the history of Sept. 11.

The field is also a space to honor service members and first responders from Utah. The Sandy Police K-9 Unit shared on Sunday that K-9 Trigg visited the field to visit the flag dedicated to his handler, Officer Brad Taylor, who died on Sept. 3 due to a medical condition.

According to organizers, there are approximately 318 flags at the field honoring Utah service members and first responders.

 

The Sandy Healing Field is open through Tuesday.

How the pain of 9/11 still stays with a generation

The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were the worst acts of terrorism on American soil to date. Designed to instill panic and fear, the attacks were unprecedented in terms of their scope, magnitude and impact on the American psyche.

 

The vast majority (over 60 percent) of Americans watched these attacks occur live on television or saw them replayed over and over again in the days, weeks and years following the attacks.

 

As we reflect on the anniversary of this tragic event, a question to consider is: How has this event impacted those individuals who are too young to remember a world before 9/11?

 

As an applied social psychologist, I study responses to natural and human-caused adversities that impact large segments of the population โ€“ also called โ€œcollective trauma.โ€ My research group at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) has found that such exposures have compounding effects over the course of oneโ€™s lifespan. This is particularly relevant for children who have grown up in a post-9/11 society.

PTSD and Ground Zero

Many of the outcomes on which my team and I focus involve mental health, such as post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

 

Post-traumatic stress symptoms include feeling the event is happening again (e.g., flashbacks, nightmares), avoiding situations that remind individuals of the event (e.g., public places, movies about an event), negative feelings and beliefs (e.g., the world is dangerous) or feeling โ€œkeyed upโ€ (e.g., difficulty sleeping or concentrating).

 

In order to meet diagnostic criteria for PTSD, an individual must have been directly exposed to a โ€œtraumatic eventโ€ (e.g., assault, violence, accidental injury). Direct exposure means that an individual (or their loved one) was at or very near the site of the event. It might be somewhat obvious that people directly exposed to a collective trauma like 9/11 might suffer from associated physical and mental health problems. What is less obvious is how people geographically distant from the epicenter or โ€œGround Zeroโ€ might have been impacted.

 

This is particularly relevant when considering the impact of 9/11 on children and youth across America: Many reside far from the location of the actual attacks and were too young to have experienced or seen the attacks as they occurred. The point is people can experience collective trauma solely through the media and report symptoms that resemble those typically associated with direct trauma exposure.

Impact on physical and mental health

The events of 9/11 ushered in a new era of media coverage of collective trauma, where terrorism and other forms of large-scale violence are transmitted into the daily lives of children and Americans families.

 

I have been exploring these issues with my collaborators Roxane Cohen Silver and E. Alison Holman. My colleagues surveyed a nationally representative sample of over 3,400 Americans shortly after 9/11 and then followed them for three years after the attacks.

 

In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, media-based exposure was associated with psychological distress. This included acute stress (which is similar to PTS but must be experienced in the first month of exposure), post-traumatic stress and ongoing fears and worries about future acts of terrorism (in the months following the attacks).

 

These harmful effects persisted in the years following 9/11. For example, the team found measurable impact on the mental and physical health (such as increased risk of heart diseases) of the sample three years after the attacks. Importantly, those who responded with distress in the immediate aftermath were more likely to report subsequent problems as well.

 

These findings bear close resemblance to research led by psychologist William Schlenger, whose team found that Americans who reported watching more hours of 9/11 television in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 were more likely to report symptoms resembling PTSD. For example, those who reported watching four to seven hours were almost four times as likely to report such symptoms compared to those who watched less.

 

These findings were echoed in work conducted by Michael W. Otto, who also found that more hours of 9/11-related television watching was associated with higher post-traumatic stress symptoms in children under 10 in the first year following the attacks.

9/11โ€™s impact on children

However, it is also the case that studies have found the number of children who reported longer-term distress symptoms to be relatively low. Among other factors, children whose parents had low coping abilities or themselves had learning disabilities tended to report higher distress.

 

For example, my collaborator Virginia Gil-Rivas, who studied American adolescents exposed to 9/11 only through the media, found that symptoms of post-traumatic distress decreased in most adolescents at the one-year mark. An important finding of her study was how parental coping abilities and parental availability to discuss the attacks made a difference.

 

Furthermore, children who had prior mental health problems or learning disabilities tended to be at higher risk for distress symptoms. That could be because children prone to anxiety in general experienced increased feelings of vulnerability.

 

Despite the number of studies that have followed children over the course of several years, no studies have comprehensively examined the long-term impact of 9/11 on childrenโ€™s development and adjustment. That is because it is difficult to compare American children who lived through 9/11 with those who did not, since almost every American child was exposed to images of 9/11 at some point in time.

 

This limits the ability of researchers to examine how childrenโ€™s lives might have changed over time.

 

However, some researchers believe that even media-based exposure to collective trauma could likely have a longer-term impact on the attitudes and beliefs of those who grew up in a post-9/11 world. It is possible, for example, that exposure to 9/11 and other acts of terrorism has led to fears of perceived threats, political intolerance, prejudice and xenophobia in some American children.

How 9/11 trauma impacts people today

Years later, a bigger question is: How does the collective trauma of 9/11 affect people today?

 

Over the past several years, my team and I have sought to address many of the issues that remained unanswered in the scientific literature after 9/11. We sought to replicate and extend the findings initially produced after 9/11 through an examination of responses to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, the worst act of terrorism in America since 9/11.

 

To this end, we surveyed 4,675 Americans. Our sample was demographically representative, meaning that our sample proportionally matched the U.S. Census data on key indicators such as ethnicity, income, gender and marital status.

 

This allowed us to make stronger inferences about how โ€œAmericansโ€ responded. Within the first two to four weeks of the Boston Marathon bombings, we surveyed our sample about their direct and media-based exposure to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and their subsequent psychological responses.

 

Our study found that as media exposure (a sum of daily hours of Boston Marathon bombing-related television, radio, print, online news and social media coverage) increased, so did respondentsโ€™ acute stress symptoms. This was even after statistically accounting for other variables typically associated with distress responses (such as mental health).

 

People who reported more than three hours of media exposure had higher probability of reporting high acute stress symptoms than were people who were directly exposed to the bombing.

 

Then, last year, we sought to explore whether the accumulation of exposure to events like 9/11 and other collective trauma might influence responses to subsequent events like the Boston Marathon bombing.

 

Once again, we used data from demographically representative samples of people who lived in the New York and Boston metropolitan areas. We assessed people who lived in the New York and Boston areas to facilitate a stronger comparison of direct and media-based exposure to 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing: people who lived in New York or Boston were more likely to meet criteria for โ€œtrauma exposure.โ€

 

This study had two primary, congruent findings. First, people who experienced greater numbers of direct exposure to prior collective trauma (e.g., 9/11, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Superstorm Sandy) reported higher acute stress symptoms after the Boston Marathon bombings.

 

Second, greater amounts of media-based live exposure (i.e., people watched or listened to the event as it occurred on live television, radio, or online streaming) to prior collective trauma were also associated with higher acute stress symptoms after the Boston Marathon bombing.

 

So greater direct and media-based exposure to prior collective trauma was linked with greater acute stress responses (e.g., anxiety, nightmares, trouble concentrating) after a subsequent event.

Stay informed, but limit exposure

Overall, our research indicates that the impact on children growing up post-9/11 likely extends well beyond the physical and mental health effects of exposure โ€“ be it direct or media-based. Each tragic incident that individuals witness, even if only through the media, likely has a cumulative effect.

 

Nevertheless, the positive finding is that most people are resilient in the face of tragedy. In the early years following 9/11, several studies examined how 9/11 impacted children nationally. Like adults, children exposed both directly and through the media tended to be resilient in the early years following the attacks and symptoms generally decreased over time.

 

Even so, being aware of the potential for distress through media exposure is important. Even small percentages can have large implications for our nationโ€™s physical and mental health. For example, in the case of 9/11, 10 percent of a nationally-representative sample reporting post-traumatic stress represents 32,443,375 Americans with similar symptoms.

 

So, people should stay informed, but limit repeated exposure to disturbing images, which can elicit post-traumatic stress and lead to negative psychological and physical health outcomes.The Conversation

Russia is denying air superiority to Ukraine and using that to โ€œstopโ€ the counteroffensive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday, the latest in a line of remarks addressing the difficulty the Western-armed Ukrainian army has had this year turning back the tide of the Russian occupation.

 

Speaking at a conference in Kyiv on Friday, Zelensky said Ukraine needed โ€œpowerful and long-rangeโ€ because: โ€œWe are not in the sky and Russia is, they stop us from the sky. They stop our counteroffensiveโ€, reports Le Figaro.

 

Zelensky also accused Western powers of hypocrisy in their urging Ukraine to fight faster, when they themselvesโ€” in his view โ€” acted too slowly to support the invaded nation. He continued: โ€ They stop our counteroffensive. The war is complicated, some processes are complicated, and many things have been slowed down. When some allies say: โ€˜What about the counter-offensive? When will the next step be?โ€™. My answer is that today, our steps are coming faster than [the Westโ€™s] new sanctions packages.โ€

 

Western support to Ukraine, including the deliveries of weapons and new sanctions against Russia, is becoming more โ€œcomplicated and slowerโ€, he said, and this was having an impact on the conflict itself. He said on Friday:โ€œThe war is slowing down. This is true, we recognise this.All the processes are becoming harder and slowing down: from sanctions to the delivery of weapons.โ€

 

The comments are not the first of their sort for Zelensky, who has made several โ€” sometimes testy โ€” remarks on the state of the counter-offensive. In June, the President acknowledged things were going โ€œslower than desiredโ€ and blamed a diet of Hollywood war movies for some in the West for unrealistic expectations of how fast a war could be won. The tone of these remarks was picked up just this month by the Ukrainian foreign secretary who told critics of the nationโ€™s execution of the counteroffensive to โ€œshut upโ€ and see if they could do better.

 

These remarks have often been accompanied by repeated calls for further military equipment, particularly the American-made F-16 jet fighters Ukraine believe will be able to sweep the Russian airforce from the sky.

 

Training of Ukrainian pilots to fly the machines has now actually begun, with dozens of aircraft promised by a group of three European nations. Yet this is not enough, Kyiv says, with advisor to President Zelenskyโ€™s Presidential OfficeMykhailo Podolyak saying other allies should also hand over their inventories to demonstrate their dedication to โ€œinternational law, democracy and justiceโ€, achieved through the defeat of Russia.

How 9/11 influenced the way conspiracy theories spread today

There are some things so difficult to countenance that it can seem simply easier to believe they didnโ€™t happen: that one man could put a bullet through the presidentโ€™s skull, that human beings could stand on the moon, that a seemingly average man might walk into a school and kill the children inside. And, throughout history, many people have chosen simply not to believe those unfathomable events, telling themselves stories that help make the world make sense, albeit more sinister.

 

So when the first plane and then another collided with the Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan in September 2001, it opened a wound so unfathomable in its horror that it seemed necessary to tell a new kind of story โ€“ one that helped make sense of the tragedy, even as it distorted it. The conspiracy theories began almost as soon as the attacks had finished, and they have stayed with us to this day.

 

The theories themselves are so well-worn that they have progressed all the way to memes: the common refrain that โ€œjet fuel canโ€™t melt steel beamsโ€, once an earnestly communicated part of conspiracy lore, has now become so hackneyed that it is almost meaningless. But there are many others, which either tend to suggest that that the US could have intervened but decided not to, or that it actually orchestrated the attacks itself.

 

At the same time, however, they borrowed from tropes and ideas that had existed for centuries before, and which have continued to prove popular in the decades since. For the most part, 9/11 conspiracy theories are the same as those that went before, and those that followed, with the nouns swapped.

 

Perhaps the most distinct facet about the 9/11 conspiracy theories is the way they were pushed through formats that are familiar now in everything from advertising to the arts. In 2005, as the early viral internet we know today was finding its feet โ€“ it was the year of the first Pepe the Frog drawing, the beginnings of โ€œChuck Norris factsโ€ and the โ€œMillion Dollar Homepageโ€ โ€“ there appeared a video known asLoose Change, a documentary that presented the central ideas of the 9/11 conspiracy theory in a way that sent it swiftly across the internet.

Democrat Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday declared gun violence a public health emergency in response to the shooting deaths of a thirteen-year-old girl on July 28, a five-year-old girl on August 14, and an eleven-year-old boy on September 6.

 

โ€œThe action plan includes a suspension of open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County, temporarily prohibiting the carrying of guns on public property with certain exceptions. Exceptions include for licensed security guards and law enforcement officers. Citizens with permits to carry firearms are free to possess their weapons on private property (such as at a gun range or gun store), provided they transport the firearm in a locked box, use a trigger lock, or some other mechanism that renders the gun incapable of being fired,โ€ according to the press release.

 

The public health order also directs:

 

The Regulation and Licensing Division to conduct monthly inspections of licensed firearm dealers to ensure compliance with all sales and storage laws.

The Department of Health, along with the Environment Department, to begin wastewater testing for illegal substances such as fentanyl at schools.

The Department of Health to compile and issue a comprehensive report on gunshot victims presenting at hospitals in New Mexico, which shall include (if available): demographic data of gunshot victims, including age, gender, race, and ethnicity; data on gunshot victimโ€™s healthcare outcomes; the brand and caliber of the firearm used; the general circumstances leading to the injury; the impact of gunshot victims on New Mexicoโ€™s healthcare system; and any other pertinent information.

A prohibition on firearms on state property, including state buildings and schools. This also includes other places of education where children gather, such as parks.

The State Police to add officers in Albuquerque with funding for overtime provided.

The Children, Youth and Families Department to immediately suspend the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative and evaluate juvenile probation protocols.

โ€œNo constitutional right, in my view, including my oath, is intended to be absolute,โ€ Grisham said in a chilling statement during a news conference.

Even worse, Grisham admitted she is openly violating the US Constitution: โ€œThere will be a legal challenge and I canโ€™t tell you that we win it,โ€ she said.

 

Grishamโ€™s declaration and gun grabbing was so extreme and unlawful that far-left Democrat Rep. Ted Lieu called her out. Gun-grabbing mongrel David Hogg also blasted Grisham.

 

Ted Lieu is a Democrat from California of all places and Grishamโ€™s assault on the Second Amendment was even too far for him.

 

โ€œI support gun safety laws. However, this order from the Governor of New Mexico violates the U.S. Constitution. No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.โ€ Ted Lieu said.

An Incident within an incident is ongoing on a California fire right now. I can assure you that the fire management is doing what they can to remedy this disaster, but itโ€™s still a giant mess. I do not envy the task they have in front of them.

 

Over the last 24 hours, Hotshot buggies, Engines, Support Trucks, Tenders, Supt Trucks, UTVs, and everything else have been shut down on the Smith River Complex. A fuel tender, either out of incompetence or just sheer horrible luck, filled hundreds of diesel vehicles with gas and gas vehicles with diesel.

 

Crews are stranded on the mountain while they wait their turn for the mobile mechanics to fix their trucks. The fire has taken a tactical pause.

Again, this may have affected over 100 vehicles. Fire crews that have hit their day 14 are still stuck on the side of mountain roads, spiked out, waiting to become mobile again. For a lot of these vehicles, simply pumping the tanks out is not enough. Likely, some are wrecked, and this incident has ground to a halt.

 

This is the definition of a shitshow, and they are very fortunate the fire is not ripping right now.

 

A couple of weeks ago, I reported on the massive issues with the caterers in fire camps this year due to the โ€œcheapest option firstโ€ policy. I sure hope this fuel issue was just a horrible mistake and not a sign of things to come due to a โ€œlowest fuel bidderโ€ policy.

 

Iโ€™m sure the Team is not very happy, obviously. The fuel contractors are probably having nightmares right now. I would absolutely hate to be in their shoes. But this one incident within an incident has brought an entire operation to its knees. Stranded crews, people timing out canโ€™t leave, and crews spiked out waiting for a solution while their trucks sit dead.

Authoritarians are the reason we still have 9/11 conspiracy theories

On September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers from several nationalities, but aligned with Al-Qaeda, flew four planes that led to the deaths of all aboard these commercial jets, and many more in World Trade Center and Pentagon. Despite the overwhelming evidence in support of what happened, a small number, fueled by populists, reject this notion in favor of a series of highly contradictory explanations. These narratives are either launched or amplified by authoritarians, seeking perhaps converts to their ideology, perhaps trivializing what happened to the victims.

 

Itโ€™s been more than two decades since that tragic day. But far from forgetting about it, some are seeking a far different explanation for the dayโ€™s event. Their conspiracy theories are incredibly varied and therefore impossibly inconsistent, yet the lack of logic behind this has hardly served as a deterrent for the most hard core of those who spread them.

 

For example, weโ€™ve heard that it was a missile, not a plane, flown by representatives from the Saudi Arabian government, Israel, and Iraq too, along with U.S. CIA agents, just to name a few. And if you think the cockpit is getting a little crowded, thereโ€™s also the theory that they were flown by remote control, that the buildings were brought down by controlled detonation, that the USA government allowed this to happen too, or simply did the job itself. Motives are just as varied: to take down the U.S. Government, or it was by the U.S. Government to take down the Muslims, or part of a โ€œJewish World Conspiracy?โ€ Thereโ€™s even some that say it was about blaming Cuba or that a SAM shot down a plane. Aliens canโ€™t be far behind on the list.

 

The percentage of Americans who believe this stuff was small at first, owing to patriotism and rejecting the largely foreign content of the conspiracies, but with the invasion of Iraq and the dubious assumptions and rationale for that fueled a lot of questions, leading to a number of truthers by 2006. In all models, authoritarianism is a chief predictor for a predisposition toward both conspiratorial beliefs.โ€ For this study, this included those who believed in the discredited โ€œbirtherโ€ theories about Obama and where he came from, as well as these contradictory โ€œtrutherโ€ arguments. Sadly, Richey finds this authoritarian personality and predisposition to believe conspiracies โ€œis linked to greater anxiety and cognitive difficulties with higher order thinking.โ€

 

Thereโ€™s a reason why foreign governments and domestic opportunists are pushing conspiracies about 9/11 and other elements of American history and life. โ€œโ€™When you canโ€™t subjugate people using the appeal of your own model, you have to undermine the allegiance of citizens to their own system,โ€™ Rudy Reichstadt explained,โ€ as reported in LeMonde. โ€œAnd the conspiracy scene, this machine for hating existing elites and democratic institutions, is a perfect channel.โ€

This 9/11, letโ€™s honor those who lost their lives by rejecting the arguments of those who push the conspiracies. They undermine what the victims believed in before the terrorists killed them.

The family of an Oakland baker who was dragged to her death by a getaway car during a purse snatching is calling for no jail time for the suspect because it 'goes against her social justice beliefs.'

Ishmael Burch, 19, was taken into custody earlier this month on charges in connection to the February 6 death of Jen Angel, 48, who was robbed by two thieves while she was sitting in her car in the downtown area of the city.

Burch was allegedly driving the getaway car as a second person smashed Angel's car window and grabbed her purse. She tried to chase down the car, but got caught in the door and was dragged 50ft down the street. She died two days later.

Angel's loved ones said in a statement shortly after her death that she was a 'social justice activist' who 'did not believe in state violence, carceral punishment, or incarceration as an effective or just solution to social violence and inequity.'

Their statement was reiterated in the wake of Burch's arrest as they urged prosecutors not to jail the suspect. He is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and is set to appear in court on July 14.

Vatican calls for investigation into Catholic clerics linked to sexual abuse in Switzerland

 

The Vatican has called for an investigation into high-ranking Catholic clergy members in Switzerland having to do with sexual abuse.

 

The Swiss Bishops' Conference stated that there were apparently allegations against retired and active bishops, as well as other clergy members in their handling of abuse cases, per Associated Press.

 

The majority of the clergy members have been accused of covering up abuse cases, but there are some who have been accused of committing sexual abuse themselves.

 

The conference noted that the Vatican had received a letter with the allegations listed in May. As a result, they appointed Swiss Bishop Joseph Bonnemain to lead the preliminary investigation in June, according to the report.

 

Bonnemain is reportedly known for investigating sexual assaults within the church.

 

Winnipeg Free Press reported that Father Nicolas Betticher, a priest at the Bruder Klaus church in Bern, had written the letter, which came to light earlier Sunday in a report by the newspaper Blick.

The letter accuses six bishops of covering up abuse cases. Additionally, one bishop and three priests are accused of sexually molesting teenagers.

 

Betticher told the AP during a phone interview that he was motivated by a call from Pope Francis who said members of the clergy should "announce" any signs of sexual abuse or cover-up that they may come across.

 

โ€œTwenty years ago, we did not have a sufficient legal basis and therefore we made a lot of mistakes,โ€ Betticher said.

 

โ€œNow, I see that for 10 years, we have continued to make mistakes and today, there is a kind of will to hide certain things, or not to be precise, and not to go through with the checks (of allegations of sexual abuse).โ€

 

โ€œToday, we can no longer afford to simply say, โ€˜Ah yes, I know, but I didnโ€™t do it quite right, but weโ€™ll do better next time.โ€™ Thatโ€™s over,โ€ Betticher said. โ€œIt completely discredits the Church. And thatโ€™s what disturbs me, because at the core, people tell us: โ€˜We donโ€™t want to come anymore, weโ€™re leaving the church.โ€™ And that, for me, is unacceptable.โ€

 

The bishops' conference has informed the Swiss public prosecutor's offices "of the cases mentioned in the letter."

 

The revelation comes after a report earlier this year suggested that the Catholic Church had experienced a mass exodus, with more than 500,000 German Catholics leaving the church due to allegations of sexual abuse and assault.

I think there is. I think Hillary Clinton was identifying this when she "projected" (in my opinion, anyway) about a "vast right wing conspiracy". I do think there is a vast left wing conspiracy as I see evidence of it in many places.

The case of paedophile William Landman shows why Daniel Andrews's inquiry won't 'go where it needs to go'

 

"The person who's running the inquiry โ€ฆ we've given to her the power to go where the evidence takes her."

 

So said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews last Thursday, explaining the role Kathleen Foley SC will play in leading the government's recently-launched Board of Inquiry "into historical child sexual abuse in Beaumaris Primary School and certain other government schools".

In the case of Beaumaris Primary, where a cluster of paedophile teachers abused alarming numbers of children in the 1960s and 70s, the evidence is likely to take Foley and her inquiry on hellish journeys that sometimes end in cemeteries.

 

And to be clear, those who survived, the loved ones of those who didn't, and the brave few who ensured this inquiry is even taking place, certainly deserve its fullest attention and respect.

 

But on launch day, even the inquiry's title, trailing off into vagueness, already begged uncomfortable questions. "Certain other government schools"? Which ones? Any and all to which, using the premier's description of Foley's role, "the evidence takes her"?

 

To be blunt, probably not.

 

Even a cursory glance at the terms of reference, which Premier Andrews misidentified as "very broad", spelled out Foley's limited remit with crystal clarity. Presently, her inquiry is solely an examination of abuse perpetrated by the Beaumaris Primary offenders โ€” at that school and 17 other government schools they were shuffled through โ€” and the contemporaneous institutional responses to that particular abuse.

 

Never mind the painful, often traumatising legal ordeals such survivors have faced in recent years when they've sued the Victorian Education Department. The inquiry won't tackle those present-day indignities.

 

And never mind that the Beaumaris abuse represents a small fraction of the degradations inflicted on blameless children by the incalculable number of paedophile teachers who infiltrated Victoria's state school system in the 20th century. As it stands, those will go unexamined too.
