Oprah, who has a reported net worth between $2 billion to $3.5 billion, has disabled comments on her Instagram posts shortly after she asked for donations to help victims of the Maui wildfires. Oprah owns over 1,000 acres of land on Maui, with over 800 acres of undeveloped agricultural land; for comparison, she owns more land than Central Park in New York. Oprah was joined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who has an estimated net worth of $800 million, to solicit donations after claiming they both contributed $10 million kickstart the People’s Fund of Maui.

A critic wrote: “Please don’t tell me I just saw a billionaire standing next to a millionaire begging the average, everyday citizen for donations that barely able to get by due to a recession in a country where Biden is giving away all our resources.”

Hawaii’s Housing Chief Resigns after Confrontation over Potential State Land Grab

Hawaii’s chief housing officer, Nani Medeiros, announced plans to resign claiming that she and her family were threatened over a potential land grab by the state. Hawaii Governor Josh Green’s ‘Build Beyond Barriers’ program was created under an emergency proclamation to bypass local zoning and building regulations to quickly approve affordable housing.

Earth Justice and other groups criticized the proclamation and filed a lawsuit to block it.

Herman Andaya, head of Maui Emergency Management Agency, recently resigned from his office following criticism after he publicly defended his decision not to sound powerful warning sirens as a deadly wildfire ripped through Lahaina.
