Caroline Ellison says FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried hoped to be US president someday.
With Bankman-Fried watching from his courtroom seat, Ellison, 28, said at the New York City trial that she committed fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering with Bankman-Fried and others as they stole from customers and investors in FTX, a company Bankman-Fried started, and lenders to his hedge fund, Alameda Research.
โHe directed me to commit these crimes,โ she said of Bankman-Fried.
Repeatedly, Ellison made clear that Bankman-Fried was behind the biggest financial moves in his companies, to the point that bitcoins he created were sometimes called โSamโs coins.โ
She described him as โvery ambitiousโ and envisioning eventually leading huge companies and using his money influentially, especially in politics.
He even thought there was a 5% chance heโd become president someday, Ellison said.
โWhen you say president, what are you referring to?โ asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon.
โOf the United States,โ Ellison answered.
Shortly after Ellisonโs highly anticipated turn on the witness stand began, she was asked to identify Bankman-Fried in the courtroom. The bespectacled Ellison stood and scanned the courtroom for a long minute, at first unable to spot him, before gesturing his way with a flip of her hand and saying he was โover there wearing a suit.โ
The appearance of Bankman-Fried, who sat with his lawyers, has changed dramatically recently as he has lost weight and trimmed his well-known wild coif into a tightly cropped look more traditional among financial professionals.
One balance sheet that Bankman-Fried ended up choosing for Ellison for one lender, Genesis, was known as โAlternative 7.โ An entry on the balance sheet for the amount Alameda had borrowed from FTX was removed.
The effect was that it looked like the loans were safer than they actually were, Ellison said. Ultimately, Alamedaโs liabilities went down from $15 billion on its original balance sheet to around $10 billion on the Alternative 7 version.
Ellison said she knew that FTX executives and entities didnโt have the money to repay Alameda what it had lent out, as those funds had been invested into various things.

Some money, she said, went to political donations, including $35 million funneled through one political operative to Republican candidates and another $10 million that Bankman-Fried steered to President Joe Biden, money that she said Bankman-Fried thought bought him a measure of influence and recognition.

Things did, indeed, get worse.

During the political battle in Israel over the disengagement from the Gaza Strip, blue ribbons indicated support for the disengagement, while orange ribbons indicated opposition.

With tensions running high as the withdrawal nears, Israel has descended into an emotional color war. Jewish settlers and their supporters have embraced orange. On the blue side are peace activists and other backers of the withdrawal. Each side's weapon of choice: ribbons โ tied to cars, backpacks and even wedding bouquets.
Emily Amrusi, a spokeswoman for the settlers, said they adopted orange in imitation of the pro-democracy struggle in Ukraine. Settlers accuse Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of using non-democratic methods to push his plan through parliament. Orange is also the color used to label agricultural products grown by Jewish farmers in Gaza.
The pro-pullout activists chose blue and white because they are the colors of the Israeli flag, said Ami Ayalon, a former head of Israel's Shin Bet security service now among the blue team's top brass. "You don't have to explain anything. Blue and white says it all," he said.

In violent times you shouldn't have to sell your soul.
I hope we live to tell the tale.
