What is the Gaza Strip? Here's how big it is and who lives there.

 

Early on Saturday, Hamas militants broke through the border between Israel and Gaza, launching a massive attack that left more than 1,200 Israelis dead, most of them civilians, and another 2,700 wounded. The attack triggered a swift response by the Israeli military and at least 900 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip in retaliatory airstrikes, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

 

Hamas, which the U.S. classifies as a terrorist organization, has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

 

What is the Gaza Strip?

The Gaza Strip is a narrow, 25-mile stretch of land pressed against the Mediterranean Sea, between Israel and Egypt.

 

When Israel was established in 1948, many Palestinian refugees where forced to move to the strip of land. In 1967, Israel gained control of Gaza after its victory in the Six-Day War against Egypt, Syria and Jordan.

 

A Palestinian uprising in 2000 unleashed a new wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians, and Israel decided to leave Gaza in 2005, withdrawing its forces and removing some 9,000 Jewish settlers living there.

 

Soon after, Hamas defeated the Palestinian Authority, the governing body in charge of Palestinian-populated areas, in elections in Gaza. In 2007, the militant group expelled the Palestinian Authority and gained full control of the territory. Hamas, unlike the Palestinian Authority, doesn't recognize Israel's right to exist.

 

Hamas and other militant groups have managed to launch attacks against Israel from Gaza, using rockets, drones and ground operations. Israel has responded with numerous military campaigns that have damaged infrastructure in Gaza and led to the death of many civilians.

 

How big is the Gaza strip?

The strip is about 139 square miles –that's slightly more than twice the size of Washington, D.C. Its border with Israel is about 36 miles and its border with Egypt is about eight miles. There are about 24 miles (40 kilometers) of coastline on the strip, but it has been blocked by the Israeli Navy since 2009 and is closed to all maritime traffic.

 

Who lives in the Gaza Strip?

The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. More than 2 million people live in the territory.

 

Hamas's capture of Gaza led to an Israeli air, sea and land blockade, and conditions in the territory have worsened for years, with Israel's critics referring to it as an "open-air prison." Most people rely on humanitarian aid and are unable to travel without Israeli permission.

 

Forty percent of Gaza's population is under the age of 14, according to the CIA. Unemployment is high, electricity is only available for about half the day and many people do not have sufficient access to clean water, according to the Israeli organization Gisha.

 

As Israel ramps up its current offensive against Hamas, civilians are already feeling the impact. "There are no shelters or bunkers or safe routes or safe zones in Gaza," Omar Ghraieb, a resident of Gaza, told CBS News. "So it's not like you can sit down and plan with your family on how to leave."

 

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has ordered a "complete siege" of Gaza, vowing "no fuel, electricity or food supplies," will be allowed in or out.

 

Palestinian journalist Hassan Jaber told CBS News that there is not a lot of access to bomb shelters to protect civilians from the aerial strikes. "There is no safe place in Gaza," he said.

 

Jaber also said that some residents of the city could face starvation within "days." /end

U.S. Attorney declines to name those involved in decision not to prosecute Hunter Biden

 

Matthew Graves, the U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C. who was a key figure in Jan. 6 prosecutions and refused to bring tax charges against Hunter Biden, backed out of naming those involved in declining to prosecute the first son, according to his transcribed interview with lawmakers.

 

"I'm already dealing with enough threats and harassment of my assistant United States attorneys," Graves said in the official transcript obtained by Just the News as he explained why their names were not revealed.

 

He told lawmakers during the interview how his agency decided to not partner with David Weiss, the U.S. Attorney for Delaware who was later named special counsel, and prosecuting a Hunter Biden in tax charges.

 

Graves told lawmakers he met with five or six people from his office in March 2022 to determine whether they should get involved in the Hunter Biden case.

 

Three weeks later the office decided to not get involved in the case, and Graves refused to disclose his office's thoughts because the investigation is still ongoing.

 

Graves also said it was "normal" for federal prosecutors to bring tax cases without partnering with the Justice Department Tax Division, but in this case, Weiss needed the division's approval to open a grand jury probe into Hunter Biden.

 

While Graves said he never told the Delaware prosecutor to not bring charges, he also never followed up with Weiss to make it clear that he was still welcome to bring charges even if his own office would not be involved.

 

Furthermore, Graves said he never felt a need to recuse himself from being involved in the case involving President Joe Biden's son even though he worked on the president's campaign, as well as candidate John Kerry's 2004 Democratic presidential campaign and President Bill Clinton's 1996 reelection campaign.

 

"You can certainly understand how some Republicans might have concerns that a U.S. attorney appointed by President Biden might have some conflict-of-interest types of issues, weighing in on a case against the President's son," one of the lawmakers said to Graves in the transcript.

 

"I mean, people can have whatever concerns they might have. I do not view it that way. And I'm not aware of any ethical canon that says that U.S. attorneys have an obligation to recuse whenever a family member of the President is implicated," Graves responded.

 

When pressed further about whether he considered having someone else decide whether he had a conflict of interest, Graves said: "I am saying there is no ethical reason for me to put this decision on someone else. And, in my experience, when you start trying to do things that aren't required to placate people on the outside, you still wind up with those accusations despite what you did."

 

Graves' comments come after IRS whistleblowers said Weiss could not independently bring tax charges in Washington D.C. against Hunter Biden. Additionally, an unnamed FBI supervisor recently told the House that prosecutors purposely slow-walked the Hunter Biden probe.

Going after the Hamas terrorists is what Israel should be doing, not bombing a bunch of random civilians into rubble and cutting off all humanitarian aid. Imagine if you lived there, having nothing to do with the terrorist attacks and yet they treated you and your family and local community that way. Unethical and counter-productive. At least that's my take.

I've never seen the House Republican Conference so discombobulated, rudderless and confused in my time covering Congress.

 

They said they'd spend the fall passing bills using regular order, instead they've booted their speaker and are warring over the next one.

 

They are rewriting the rules for the election the day of the election after criticizing states for doing that in 2020.

The silence from Harvard’s leadership, so far, coupled with a vocal and widely reported student groups' statement blaming Israel solely, has allowed Harvard to appear at best neutral towards acts of terror against the Jewish state of Israel.

 

Unlike President Bacow’s strong statement of support for Ukraine after Putin’s invasion and the decision to fly the Ukraine flag over Harvard yard…

…or Dean Gay’s powerful statement on police violence, we have as yet - 48 hours later - no official Harvard statement at this time of moral testing.

Instead, Harvard is being defined by the morally unconscionable statement apparently coming from two dozen student groups blaming all the violence on Israel. I am sickened. I cannot fathom the Administration’s failure to disassociate the University and condemn this statement.

 

I very much hope appropriate statements from the University and College condemning those who launched terrorist attacks and standing in solidarity with its victims will soon be forthcoming.

 

To be clear nothing is wrong with criticizing Israeli policy past, present or future. I have been sharply critical of PM Netanyahu. But that is very different from lack of clarity regarding terrorism.

In its recent editorial on the controversy surrounding Harvard Kennedy School Dean Douglas W. Elmendorf’s decision to block a fellowship for former Human Rights Watch head Kenneth Roth, The Crimson’s Editorial Board took a bold stance, denouncing Elmendorf’s suppression of freedom of speech. However, in its 752-word article, The Crimson mentioned the central issue in the fellowship denial — Roth’s support of Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel — only once.

 

The Crimson seems to have fallen victim to the same regime of silencing — it is safer, such logic goes, not to talk about “controversial” issues — which it purports to criticize in its article.

 

The Editorial Board passionately exalts the principle of academic freedom and apologizes to Roth on behalf of the Harvard community, arguing Harvard can make amends by “improving.” However, The Crimson never explains exactly what can be improved. To discuss Elmendorf’s decision without providing context on Harvard’s anti-Palestinian racism and institutional bias towards Israeli policy is to circle the drain on the issue but avoid its actual stakes.

 

This is more than just another depoliticized conversation about academic freedom. Palestinian and pro-Palestinian voices in the United States and on college campuses are systemically silenced, as recently documented in The Boston Globe and Jewish Currents. The central reason for the fellowship denial remains unaddressed by Harvard and notably absent from Elmendorf’s email, just as it is mentioned in mere passing in The Crimson’s take on the matter.

 

As Harvard affiliates who advocate for justice in Palestine, we have come to expect the silencing of Palestinian voices as a formative part of our academic experience. Blocked hiring decisions like this one, student and faculty fear of blacklisting on sites like Canary Mission, and mysterious tenure denials are part of a system of keeping Palestinian voices quiet. The stifling may be subtle, as when professors hedge class discussions of Palestine to avoid “controversy,” or more explicit, like when organizers with the Palestine Solidarity Committee were made to turn people away from an already-approved public event due to threats made against our guest speakers and organization. These violations of academic freedom do not occur in a vacuum; they cannot be prevented by an academic freedom policy which does not address the particularities of the Palestinian exception to free speech.

 

This is exactly why The Crimson’s silence is so ironic. Even in its outrage over a matter of suppression of free speech because of outspokenness in support of Palestinian liberation, The Crimson has managed to paper over Palestine.

 

In place of the Editorial Board’s vague recommendation for “improvement,” we call on Harvard to take the following steps to address institutional anti-Palestinian racism:

 

1) Adopt a University-wide policy protecting against anti-Palestinian racism and protecting those with pro-Palestinian views against discrimination: a) In hiring decisions b) In admissions c) In disciplinary proceedings.

 

2) Amend Dean Elmendorf’s apology regarding Kenneth Roth’s fellowship clarifying that his decision was rooted in suppression of criticism of Israeli policy and disclosure of how the decision was reached.

 

We thank The Crimson’s Editorial Board for standing up in favor of academic freedom. We hope, though, that next time they choose to weigh in on an issue like this, they take more care not to replicate the same pattern about which they have taken such a lofty moral stance.

Flying car completes test flight between airports

 

A prototype flying car has completed a 35-minute flight between international airports in Nitra and Bratislava, Slovakia.

 

The hybrid car-aircraft, AirCar, is equipped with a BMW engine and runs on regular petrol-pump fuel.

 

Its creator, Prof Stefan Klein, said it could fly about 1,000km (600 miles), at a height of 8,200ft (2,500m), and had clocked up 40 hours in the air so far.

 

It takes two minutes and 15 seconds to transform from car into aircraft.

 

'Very pleasant'

The narrow wings fold down along the sides of the car.

 

Prof Klein drove it straight off the runway and into town upon arrival, watched by invited reporters.

 

He described the experience, early on Monday morning, as "normal" and "very pleasant".

 

In the air, the vehicle reached a cruising speed of 170km/h.

 

It can carry two people, with a combined weight limit of 200kg (31 stone).

 

But unlike drone-taxi prototypes, it cannot take off and land vertically and requires a runway.
