Ukraine farmland, and its grain production that fed the world, is now owned by mega-corporations based in the US and EU, including Vanguard Group, Kopernik Global Investors, BNP Asset Management Holding, Goldman Sachs-owned NN Investment Partners Holdings, and Norges Bank Investment Management. Several large US pension funds, foundations, and university endowments are also invested in Ukrainian land through NCH Capital – a US-based private equity fund, which is the fifth largest landholder in the country.

Ukraine’s agricultural land was taken over when a law passed in March 2020 lifted the country’s moratorium on sales of agricultural land. Journalist Don DeBar explained how these firms dumped of cheap Ukrainian wheat on the Polish market to undermine Poland’s support for the war.

English primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall, who the World Economic Forum (WEF) lists as one of its “agenda contributors,” bemoaned the size of the world’s human population during a panel discussion at the organization’s annual summit in Davos, Switzerland. She told an audience of elites that “We cannot hide away from human population growth. Because, you know, it underlies so many of the other problems. All of these problems that we talk about wouldn’t be a problem if there was the size of the population that it was 500 years ago.” The current population is about 8 billion, but 500 years ago, the population is estimated 435 million people. Does anyone know if local news reports are geofenced? In other words, if I check local news on line instead of listening to the radio might I be missing stories based on location or other criteria?

 

Remember when different editions of major newspapers were printed for different markets? I think something like that could be going on with on-line news. I don't use social media (unless this place counts), so I don't know if something similar is happening with social media platforms, but based on what we've learned I'd bet it is.

 

I'm suspicious because I could find information on line about my city "ward" but not others in my area.

According to a press release from the White House, former Navy SEAL Vice Admiral Joseph Kernan of Florida is to be named as Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence. Per the press release, Kernan currently serves as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for SAP National Security Services. Kernan also serves as the chairman of NS2 Serves, a “veteran training and employment program,” as well as on the Board of Directors for both the National Navy SEAL Museum and The Mission Continues, a nonprofit founded by Missouri governor and former SEAL, Eric Greitens.

 

Kernan previously served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy before successfully completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training with Class 117 in 1982, and becoming a Naval Special Warfare/SEAL officer. During his time in the SEALs, Kernan served as the Commander of Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC), Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. Fourth Fleet, and the Deputy Commander of U.S. Southern Command. Additionally, he was a Senior Military Assistant to former Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

 

Kernan is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the National Defense University. His previous SEAL experience includes commanding platoons at Underwater Demolition Team 12 (UDT-12), SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 (SDVT-1), and SEAL Team 5. Kernan served his executive officer tour at Naval Special Warfare Unit 1 in Naval Station Subic Bay, in the Philippines.

I've never seen the House Republican Conference so discombobulated, rudderless and confused in my time covering Congress.

 

They said they'd spend the fall passing bills using regular order, instead they've booted their speaker and are warring over the next one.

 

They are rewriting the rules for the election the day of the election after criticizing states for doing that in 2020.

 

They are taking the cell phones of elected officials when they go into meetings – these are adults with staffs who are not able to bring their electronics into party meetings.

 

This speaker election could go a while. Two weeks now on an internal party matter with govt funding expiring in a month and change

Top Senate Republicans seek to reprimand Fani Willis over Trump charges

Georgia Senate Republicans filed a formal complaint to punish Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis after she sought charges against former President Donald Trump under a new law aimed at sanctioning “rogue” prosecutors.

 

The complaint contends Willis “improperly cherry-picked cases to further her personal political agenda” and asks the newly formedProsecuting Attorneys Qualification Commission to initiate an investigation and take “appropriate measures” to sanction her.

 

“The integrity of our justice system is at stake, and the trust of the community in the District Attorney’s Office has been severely eroded,” states the complaint, which a group of eight state senators submitted hours after the law took effect Oct. 1.

 

The Republicans don’t specifically mention Trump in the complaint, but they sought to link a spate of deaths in the Fulton County Jail to Willis’ decision to “empanel a special grand jury to investigate her political adversaries” amid a yearslong backlog of cases.

 

Willis, who has criticized the law as racist and retaliatory, declined to comment through a spokesman. But she has long said that she can balance the high-profile trials in the Trump case with the other demands of her office.

 

The complaint sharpened an already deep rift over Trump among state Republicans.

 

Gov. Brian Kemp, a chief sponsor of the law, has repeatedly said there’s no evidence Willis should face any sanctions by the commission for bringing the indictment against Trump and his allies alleging they participated in a “criminal enterprise” to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

 

Kemp, however, has criticized the timing of the charges.

 

“I haven’t seen anything that she has done that has broken the law or the procedures that we have. And I’ve been very honest with people about that,” Kemp said in a recent interview. “It may be a political action she’s taken in some ways, with timing and other things, but it doesn’t mean it’s illegal.”

 

But the GOP-controlled state Senate has forcefully broken from that approach. Senate leaders encouraged their constituents to file complaints with the commission against Willis shortly after she announced the indictment in August.

 

And last week, Senate Republicans launched a probe into dangerous conditions at the Fulton County Jail that is expected to scrutinize Willis’ handling of the backlog of cases that worsened during the coronavirus pandemic.

 

The document, reviewed Monday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was filed by a group that included Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch and state Sen. Jason Anavitarte, another high-ranking Republican in the chamber.

 

The complaint contends that Willis has “prioritized cases that align with her political party’s interests” rather than on the merits of each case. And it invokes the 10 inmates who have died in Fulton County custody in the past year.

 

“Her selective prosecution has resulted in dangerous, deadly, and unjust overcrowding in the local jail and an unprecedented backlog of cases in the judicial system,” the complaint states. “These consequences are unacceptable and detrimental to our state.”

 

Georgia State University law professor Clark Cunningham, who has written extensively on constitutional law, said the complaint shouldn’t go anywhere.

 

“The law is intended to set a fairly high bar for such an extraordinary intervention,” Cunningham said.“And a complaint like this seems to be an inappropriate use of the oversight process.”

 

‘Alarming’

 

the charges have particularly rocked the Georgia Senate.

 

State Sen. Shawn Still, a first-term Republican, was charged in connection with his role as a GOP elector after he signed a false certificate claiming Trump won Georgia in the 2020 presidential election. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, the chamber’s president and also a Trump elector, could also be indicted. Both have said they did nothing wrong.

 

Two of the complaint’s supporters — state Sens. Shelly Echols and Bo Hatchett — were repeatedly targeted on social media by Moore, who was ousted from the GOP Senate caucus this month. Hatchett said the “most alarming thing, for me, is the selective prosecution.”

 

“She is selecting politically motivated cases to go after while at the same time neglecting a huge backlog that’s unsustainable and dangerous,” Hatchett said. “It appears that she has neglected her duties as a prosecutor while focusing on a few politically motivated cases.”

 

The other Republicans who joined the complaint are state Sens. Clint Dixon, Russ Goodman, Chuck Payne and Sam Watson.…

I noticed a pb NOTABLE about the "ebony alert" and I'd like to point something out. For many decades "whites" (whatever that means) were considered the "preferred" demographic in the US. The three-page complaint was filed shortly after a Fulton County judge rejected a challenge from a bipartisan group of district attorneys who sought to block the law from taking effect Oct. 1.

 

In the six-page order, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker ruled that the plaintiffs failed to prove that freezing the law from taking effect would prevent an “immediate and irreparable injury.”

 

The legal challenge was brought by four district attorneys — three Democrats and one Republican — who view the law as an unconstitutional power grab that threatens their ability to choose which cases to pursue and how they discuss their strategy in public. They have vowed to appeal the case to the state’s top court.

 

Known as Senate Bill 92, the law was approved along party lines by the General Assemblyearlier this year after Kemp put it atop his policy agenda shortly after his reelection victory.

 

He vowed to punish “far-left prosecutors” he accused of undermining public safety, including a district attorney in his native Athens-Clarke County who won her election on a platform of prioritizing violent crimes over minor drug offenses.

 

The law is among a spate of Republican-led efforts nationwide to exert more control over liberal prosecutors they view as “rogue” because they refuse to enforce low-level drug offenses, anti-abortion restrictions and other tough-on-crime crackdowns.

 

The law allows the commission to sanction or remove district attorneys for a range of causes, such as “willful misconduct” or “persistent failure” to follow the law. Kemp and GOP legislative leaders appointed members of the panel this year, and the commission recently posted a job seeking a full-time director.

 

Still, it’s unlikely the commission will soon issue any sanctions. It still must put forth a series of rules and regulations before weighing any complaints. And its members have indicated the panel can’t discipline a prosecutor until the Georgia Supreme Court approves its rules.

 

Gooch, the Senate GOP leader, said he’s still exploring other options to reprimand Willis, including legislative hearings that could scrutinize her use of public resources.

The US will likely 'go to war' in Israel with air and naval power if Syria or Iran become actively involved, retired 4-star general says

The US is likely to directly intervene with air and naval strikes if Israel's existence is threatened, Ret. Gen. Barry McCaffrey said.

 

Speaking on Sunday on MSNBC's "Weekends with Alex Witt," the four-star US Army general described how such an escalation likely would only occur if Israel's Middle Eastern neighbors became heavily involved.

 

"The other shoe we're waiting to see if it drops is, will Hezbollah intervene out of Lebanon with their 100,000 some odd rockets? Will the West Bank ignite? And what will the Syrians and the Egyptians do?" McCaffrey said.

 

"I would suggest to you our support of Israel will be absolute, and if we see Syrian military intervention, active Iranian military intervention, we'll go to war," McCaffrey added.

 

Hamas militants launched a series of surprise attacks and rocket barrages against Israel on Saturday, killing hundreds and capturing dozens of hostages along the border of the Gaza Strip. Israel has declared war in response.

 

The Israel Defense Forces say 700 Israelis have been confirmed dead, while another 1,500 were wounded. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Health Ministry said at least 400 Palestinians have been killed in retaliatory Israeli strikes, Reuters reported.

 

The US announced on Sunday that it is sending an aircraft carrier strike group, including F-35s and F-16s, to patrol the Eastern Mediterranean and deter all-out war involving Israel's neighbors.

 

"They're there for more than a show of force or a potential noncombatant evacuation," McCaffrey, who served in the Gulf War and led the US Southern Command from 1994 to 1996, told MSNBC.

 

McCaffrey noted that this was his own assessment of the conflict and thatthere "is absolutely no way" that any US official would concur publicly that America could go to war in Israel.

 

"What I am saying is that if the existence of the State of Israel is at stake, if the Syrian military intervene, if Hezbollah started overwhelming the Israelis, in my judgment, at that point,we would consider actively intervening with air power and naval power,"he said.

 

However, it's unlikely that the US would send troops into Israel, given the Israel Defense Forces' own ground capabilities, McCaffrey added.

 

When asked if other US and Israel allies would also step in, McCaffrey said it was too early to discuss such a question with just Hamas directly involved.

 

"I think the deterrence factor is what the Biden administration is after right now. They want to make sure that the Syrian military and Hezbollah don't enter this fray," he said. "If they do, it's going to be a lethal threat to the existence of Israel."

Carson, who was a prominent far-left activist and poet in New York City, was remembered by friends and Democrat lawmakers for his acts of "kindness," but unearthed posts on social media reveal that Carson celebrated the death of conservatives, advocated for violence against police, violently threatened elected officials, and dedicated his life to abolishing law enforcement.

 

Carson threatened an elected official in a post on X under the username @ArtSchoolJock and wrote: "Hi! Political organizer here! It's not bullying to hold elected officials accountable. That being said, I would love to shove this little f-cking nerd in the locker where he belongs."

 

While responding to an article written by the New York Post that announced the death of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who died after a battle with cancer, Carson quoted the post on X and wrote "lmao hell yeah."

 

In another controversial post on X, Carson celebrated a police precinct being damaged by rioters in response to the death of George Floyd by writing, "This is really good."

Carson's death received nationwide attention not only because he was a prominent activist, but also because of how his girlfriend, Claudia V. Morales, responded to his death.

 

Morales, an Antifa-affiliated anti-police activist, was with Carson during the fatal stabbing and allegedly refused to give the suspect description to police because the assailant was black.

 

In addition, friends of Ryan Carson said on Wednesday that Carson would have sympathy for the man who fatally attacked him and that he would want his killing to be used to further left-wing policies in the city.

New York State Assemblymember Emily Gallagher said, "I'm absolutely positive that he would immediately see that this was a person who was suffering from a lack of resources in our community, who probably needs better mental health support, possibly housing, possibly drug support, drug treatment."

 

"What he would want to avenge his death is for us to fix how broken this city is," she added.

 

Post Millennial Senior Editor Andy Ngo reported that police worked overtime to find the suspect despite Carson's history of hatred towards the police, in which he referred to officers as "subhuman."

 

"Despite Ryan Carson dedicating his life to the abolishment of law enforcement, a sentiment shared by his BLM-activist girlfriend Claudia V. Morales, the NYPD worked in overdrive to arrest the black male suspect accused of murdering him on a Brooklyn street," Ngo said.

 

Additional unearthed posts revealed by Ngo include Carson mocking a journalist who expressed criticism of the "defund the police" movement, and his former support of police departments suffering from staffing crisis's which led to units being disbanded.

 

Furthermore, Ngo revealed that Carson "attended a violent BLM-Antifa riot in 2020, and made observations on how his comrades could better riot. When Antifa were described as 'pussies,' he responded he would be able to 'whoop your lil baby ass.'"

 

Police identified an 18-year-old suspect in connection with Carson's killing who authorities say is a repeat offender with a history of violence. The suspect has been taken into custody and his name has not yet been released to the public.

California’s Anti-“Misinformation” Law Collapses Thanks to the First Amendment

The authoritarian law will be officially repealed.

The Golden State has succumbed to mounting lawsuits and repealed a hotly debated law that sought to muzzle physicians offering COVID advice that contradicted mainstream medical perceptions. Legal action saw the bill, initially enacted in September 2022 and implemented in January, brought to an abrupt halt.

 

The law intended to classify COVID “misinformation” as misconduct in the medical profession, authorizing the Medical Board of California to revoke licenses of healthcare providers deviating from the prevailing scientific viewpoints. Though a federal judge brought the controversial rule to a standstill almost immediately after its enforcement, the extent of its actual application remains nebulous.

 

Governor Gavin Newsom, offered no remarks upon signing a Senate bill to negate the contentious section of the Business and Professions Code.The repeal should finalize in January, precisely one year after the initial law rolled out.

 

The first lawsuit was initiated in California’s Central District by the Liberty Justice Center soon after Newsom rolled out the new law. In their lawsuit, two doctors alleged that the new rule infringed on their constitutional right to free speech and scientific inquiry’s fundamental nature, expressing deeply felt reactions to their victory.

 

“We’re glad California repealed this bill before it could spread to other states, and we’re proud to have defended our clients’ First Amendment rights,” wrote Jacob Huebert, president of the Liberty Justice Center.

An FBI informant who was a member of the Proud Boys, the white nationalist Patriot Front and the neo-Nazi group The Base—and who allegedly stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021—was given “time served” for a recent felony gun charge.

 

The defendant, Michael Alan Jones, was sentenced to time served and two years of supervised release for unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon—a charge stemming from a March 2022 traffic stop in upstate New York, where police officers allegedly found him in possession of an illegally modified AR-15.

 

Jones had previously been convicted of two felony sex crimes. His lawyer said Jones’s “then-minor girlfriend twice performed oral sex on him in the boys’ bathroom of their high school.”

 

Last week, his lawyer asked a court to avoid more prison time for his latest crime. Jones had already served about six months in prison, and has been on home detention since last December, when his leg almost had to be amputated, according to his lawyer.

 

Jones’s lawyer admitted in a recent letter that his client was a member of the Proud Boys.

 

“However, since that time, he has changed his thinking and actually worked as a paid FBI informant who infiltrated the Charlotte chapter of the Proud Boys and gave agents valuable information about the organization,” Jones’s lawyer said.

 

“Jones has since matured and no longer harbors these views. In fact, renouncing these views was a prerequisite for his parents allowing him to come back to their home after he was released from jail,” he said, omitting Jones’s past affiliations with the Patriot Front, The Base or J6.

 

The Justice Department, for its part, asked for Jones to serve 24- to 30-months imprisonment, arguing that such a punishment is consistent with sentencing guidelines.

 

Jones’s arrest last year reportedly made waves among the Proud Boys and other right-wing groups. The left-leaning media outlet Raw Story obtained leaked messages that showed them discussing Jones.

 

“They created a whole new degree of f—ed-upness,” a member identified as “Jimbob Smith” reportedly said on Telegram. “It’s a fed-ophile. It was a fed informant mixed with a pedophile. Only Charlotte can do that!”

 

Raw Story also reported that Jones “fought with the police alongside the Proud Boys at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.” Jones has not been charged in relation to J6.

Women wearing only "g-strings" while bending over in front of traffic has become an increasingly common sight in National City, California, as prostitution issues spiral after the implementation of a controversial state law, the city’s mayor told Fox News Digital.

 

"They're waving to people on the freeway or, just to be honest with you, they are bending over for the freeway. I don’t know how else to put it; they're showing their wares," National City Mayor Ron Morrison told Fox News Digital in an interview this month.

 

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 357 in July 2022, which repealed a previous law that banned loitering with the intent to engage in prostitution. The law took effect in January this year, with Morrison arguing that the moment Newsom’s pen touched the bill, pimps in the state knew they could expand their prostitution ventures with little repercussions from law enforcement.

 

"The moment it was signed by the governor, boom, everyone knew the rules were out the window," Morrison told Fox News Digital.

 

"Those that are out there on the street, most of them are wearing less than what you would consider a scanty negligee. It is just flaunting in everybody's face. And so a lot of people are screaming, ‘Hey, you know, can't you get them on indecent exposure?’ And the problem is the way our laws read in this state. The definition of indecent exposure is as long … as the genitals are covered. Anything else is fair game out in public."

 

National City is a diverse working-class city of roughly 60,000 residents just outside San Diego on the bay, Morrison said. Prostitution issues are no stranger to the city, with the mayor explaining that as an urban area, sex workers have been known to cross the San Diego city border – but never at the rate he’s currently seeing.

 

"Very much beyond brazen," Morrison said of what he’s seeing on his streets.

 

Prostitutes gather in a downtown area that faces a freeway and are most often seen early in the morning and around 3 p.m. Morrison added that another new California law that legalized jaywalking has compounded the issues as some women stand in traffic to attract a john.

 

"I was driving on one of the streets the other day, and there's this young lady standing there in the middle of the street wearing basically a G-string, and that was it, and a couple pasties. But she's right in front of my car, I couldn't move. So, I did ask her very politely, ‘Would you please move out of the street?’ And she looked at me and says, 'If you don't want to talk to me, you can go around,'" Morrison said.

 

Businesses, ranging from mom-and-pop stores to national hotel chains, have sounded off to the mayor that the prostitutes are driving away business and have forced some businesses to refund families who were appalled at seeing nearly naked women while on their California getaway.

 

Even a local school covered its windows after prostitutes were repeatedly found hanging out near its gates, Morrison said.

 

The mayor argues that the issue comes down to Senate Bill 357, which he called an "idiotic law" that should be known as the "Safe Streets for Pimps Initiative," which has allegedly not only left his town and other municipalities in the state dealing with an increase of sex workers on the street, but it has also incentivized human trafficking.

 

"This one has just opened the doors to prostitution, sex trafficking, child sex trading, I mean, you name it. This has obviously done that. And I don't think anyone that is not just purely politically motivated could disagree with that," Morrison said.

 

The mayor described himself as a "nonpartisan" who has worked at various levels of government over more than 30 years, whose main focus is to "look out for people in National City and their businesses" and not play politics in Sacramento.

 

Senate Bill 357 was authored by Democrat state Sen. Scott Wiener, who championed the bill as one that would help protect transgender women from being targeted by police.

 

"[The previous law] allowed police officers to arrest a person, not based on what they did but based solely on how a person looks," Wiener told local media earlier this year. "So, an officer could arrest someone because they were wearing tight clothing, high heels and extra lipstick.

A naked selfie of Joe Biden's brother Frank has been discovered on a gay porn site.

 

The photo was uploaded to GuysWithiPhones.com in 2018, when Frank – who has a long-term female partner Mindy Ward – was 64. Even after more than five years, it is still live on the site.

What's happening in the lower arm of this spiral galaxy? A supernova. Last month, supernova SN 2023rve was discovered with UAE's Al-Khatim Observatory and later found to be consistent with the death explosion of a massive star, possibly leaving behind a black hole. Spiral galaxy NGC 1097 is a relatively close 45 million light years away and visible with a small telescope toward the southern constellation of the Furnace (Fornax). The galaxy is notable not only for its picturesque spiral arms, but also for faint jets consistent with ancient star streams left over from a galactic collision possibly with the small galaxy seen between its arms on the lower left. The featured image highlights the new supernova by blinking between two exposures taken several months apart. Finding supernovas in nearby galaxies can be important in determining the scale and expansion rate of our entire universe a topic currently of unexpected tension and much debate.

Western governments are terrified of Middle East killers who may return to their previous attacks on their European citizens. After all, Western leftwing suicidal immigration policies have  ensured large unassimilated Muslim populations. Millions have fled the self-created violence and tyranny of the Middle East only to cheer it on from a safe distance in their adopted Western homelands, whose welcoming of these “refugees” is now so often reciprocated with sheer contempt for the apologetic hosts.

 

Nonetheless, the Gaza crowds of 48 hours ago who were boasting their sons murdering with impunity and spat on bound defenseless women, are now aggrieved. But they might as well be barking at the moon about the supposed “unfairness” of the Israeli air counterattack.

 

Among the rubble of once Hamas high-rises they are weeping for media cameras, calling on a corrupt and anti-Semitic UN for accustomed relief, threatening on spec the West with who knows what (is it now infant beheading or body dismemberment?),  and in general suddenly quite unhappy about their “final” war they just recently boasted was all but won.

 

Will the heroic legions of Hamas who beheaded and raped now pour out in the streets to fight the IDF and push them into the sea as promised?

 

Perhaps not?

 

Some final thoughts: Why has Iran gone from bragging three days ago about its training and tutelage of the Hamas killers suddenly to pleading that while it is certainly delighted about the beheadings, rapes, executions, and mutilations, it technically had no actionable role in ensuring them?

 

The truth is that a Hamas right now is alternately threatening and begging Western governments, beseeching its suddenly mum Iranian suppliers, whining that Hezbollah and the PNA have not yet sufficiently shared the bloodletting of this war, and generally railing for more jihad from a few of its increasingly so-so, nonplused Middle-Eastern sponsors.

 

Hamas fears it may have boxed itself in, with two American aircraft carriers between it and Iran, with private satisfaction from many Arab states that their nuisance Hamas might at last have committed suicide through its mass homicide, with even fanatic supporters hard-pressed to make their “moral” case for the beheading of babies, and with a half-million IDF soldiers headed their way to deliver upon them divine justice, perhaps in the Lincolnesque Second Inaugural sense of  “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.”

 

Translated, that means for the first time in its existence an unholy Hamas may not get out of its self-created rendezvous with what it has so duly earned, given there is now no assurance of third-party relief and thus no restraint on Israel.

 

Even a shaken and shamed Biden administration—guilty of an open border and its de facto support for Hamas and Iran, but suddenly scared of a furious election-cycle American public—may for a while not call off Israel.

 

The arrogant but half-educated Harvard crowd, the European Islamists, the woke and pampered anti-Semites on Western campuses, the AOC socialists, the pro-Hamas Squad, the BLM chorus who cheered on the Hamas glider death attack, of course CAIR, and all the usual suspects for now are as furious as they are impotent—petulant that for once, just this once, and for a while longer at least, no one is listening to their oh so tired amoral defense of the indefensible.

More eyes in the sky: NRO building new satellites to deliver ‘10 times more signals and images’

The National Reconnaissance Office is on track to dramatically increase the number of spy satellites it relies upon to collect intelligence, the agency’s deputy director Maj. Gen. Christopher Povak said Oct. 10.

 

Speaking at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, Povak offered further insight into the agency’s plan to grow its constellations of satellites for imaging, signals intelligence and reconnaissance.

 

The NRO, an intelligence and defense agency, builds and operates an unknown number of classified satellites that collect intelligence for U.S. policymakers, military commands and other organizations. The director of the NRO Christopher Scolese earlier this year revealed the agency set a goal to quadruple the number of satellites it operates over the next decade and move to a more “proliferated architecture” of different size satellites in more orbits.

 

Povak on Tuesday said these new satellites “will deliver over 10 times as many signals and images as we’re collecting today.”

 

“The proliferation and diversification of our architecture will provide increased coverage, greater capacity and resilience and more timely delivery of data,” he said. The diversity of assets will make it more difficult for adversaries to harm the U.S. intelligence infrastructure, Povak added.

 

'Responding to competitors'

 

The NRO is increasingly relying on commercial imaging satellites but is also building more of its own assets in space partly in response to the growing capabilities of rival nations, he said.

 

“Competitors across the globe are posing unprecedented challenges and eroding our technology advantage at a rapid pace,” Povak said.

 

“China in particular is closing a technology gap,” he added. “They’re investing significant money, manpower and resources to challenge America’s dominance in space, developing increasingly capable military space systems, a troubling array of sophisticated and lethal weapon systems, all enabled by space, and a growing arsenal of anti-satellite capabilities.”

 

China and Russia are developing ground and space-based weapons specifically designed to interfere with or destroy U.S. systems, he said. These weapons include ground-based missiles, electronic jammers and cyber attacks.

 

“We’re answering these challenges by advancing the capabilities we put in space and on the ground,” said Povak.

 

The new satellites the NRO expects to deploy over the next decade, he said, “will create more persistent coverage over any area of the Earth, provide faster revisit rates and increase the accuracy and fidelity of our data.”

 

“Our investments will increase the survivability and strength of our systems by shoring up single points of failure, addressing vulnerabilities on the ground, in the cyber domain and on orbit,” Povak said.

 

The NRO also is buying small satellites for experiments to “rapidly assess new technologies in the space environment and test new concepts of operations on orbit,” Povak said. “This ‘pathfinder’ strategy is already reducing our timelines for deploying future operational systems.”

 

‘Responsive space’

 

Povak said the NRO is watching U.S. Space Force efforts to speed up the timeline to launch space missions, under a program known as responsive space.

 

“Responsive space to us means that we want to be able to be prepared to launch a payload as soon as that payload is ready,” he said.

 

It also means having access to multiple launch providers and launch sites to deploy a diversity of spacecraft ranging from the traditional schoolbus-size satellites so smaller platforms built with commercial satellites buses “that we can integrate new payloads on.”

 

To be able to meet the goal of quadrupling the number of satellites, the NRO is shrinking the production cycle, said Povak. “Instead of taking six to eight years to create one specific satellite, we’re now producing multiple satellites every year.”

NASA’s Webb Captures an Ethereal View of NGC 346

Filaments of dust and gas festoon this star-forming region in a new infrared image from MIRI.

 

One of the greatest strengths of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is its ability to give astronomers detailed views of areas where new stars are being born. The latest example, showcased here in a new image from Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), is NGC 346 – the brightest and largest star-forming region in the Small Magellanic Cloud.

 

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, visible to the unaided eye in the southern constellation Tucana. This small companion galaxy is more primeval than the Milky Way in that it possesses fewer heavy elements, which are forged in stars through nuclear fusion and supernova explosions, compared to our own galaxy.

 

Since cosmic dust is formed from heavy elements like silicon and oxygen, scientists expected the SMC to lack significant amounts of dust. However the new MIRI image, as well as a previous image of NGC 346 from Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera released in January, show ample dust within this region.

 

In this representative-color image, blue tendrils trace emission from material that includes dusty silicates and sooty chemical molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. More diffuse red emission shines from warm dust heated by the brightest and most massive stars in the heart of the region. An arc at the center left may be a reflection of light from the star near the arc’s center. (Similar, fainter arcs appear associated with stars at lower left and upper right.) Lastly, bright patches and filaments mark areas with abundant numbers of protostars. The research team looked for the reddest stars, and found 1,001 pinpoint sources of light, most of them young stars still embedded in their dusty cocoons.

 

By combining Webb data in both the near-infrared and mid-infrared, astronomers are able to take a fuller census of the stars and protostars within this dynamic region. The results have implications for our understanding of galaxies that existed billions of years ago, during an era in the universe known as “cosmic noon,” when star formation was at its peak and heavy element concentrations were lower, as seen in the SMC.The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier space science observatory.

Ukrainian saboteurs being trained by British special forces – FSB chief

Alexander Bortnikov accused Kiev and London of nuclear terrorism after Russian nuclear facilities were allegedly targeted

 

United Kingdom Special Forces officers have been training Ukrainian saboteurs to commit acts of terrorism and sabotage against targets on Russian territory,including nuclear power plants, claimed the director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Aleksandr Bortnikov.

 

Speaking at a security meeting in Baku on Wednesday, the official claimed that this August the FSB had detained members of a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group who revealed that they were trained by members of British special forces, who werealso responsible for planning their operations.

 

“The group’s tasks included carrying out sabotage against military targets, oil, transport and critical infrastructure facilities, as well as nuclear energy, specifically the Smolensk and Kursk nuclear power plants," Bortnikov said.

 

The FSB chief noted that similar attacks had previously also been attempted on the Leningrad and Kalinin nuclear power plants when over 20 explosive devices installed on power lines leading to the stations were neutralized as the result of anti-sabotage work.

 

However, according to Bortnikov, one such attack by Ukrainian saboteurs did require that the second block of the Kursk Nuclear power plant perform an emergency stop, adding that “such actions by the Ukrainian military intelligence and its British mentors can’t be classified as anything but nuclear terrorism.”

 

“The question arises: does London realize the reckless nature of the actions of its intelligence services? And what, ultimately, do these madmen hope to achieve?After all, through their actions they are taking the terrorist threat to a higher level,” the FSB director said, suggesting that the international community must now develop a new approach to fighting terrorism, its ideological inspirers, sponsors and leaders.

 

During his speech, Bortnikov also noted that the West has turned Ukraine into a “platform for training terrorists and mercenaries.” He claimed that in theEU alone there are currently 17 military training camps that are operating under the patronage of NATO intelligence servicesand teaching fighters in the ways of modern warfare.

 

The FSB chief explained that this knowledge is subsequently utilized in post-Soviet nations and beyond. He pointed out that Western intelligence agencies and non-governmental organizations are actively enlisting “members of international terrorist organizations, Nazis and mercenaries trained in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Europe, and overseas” to aid Ukrainian armed groups in conducting acts of terrorism and sabotage within Russian territory.
