Off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot, 44, is charged with EIGHTY-THREE counts of attempted murder

after 'trying to kill jet's engines mid-FLIGHT' - while riding in cockpit jump seat

 

An off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off the engines on a packed-out Alaska Airlines passenger jet on Sunday has been charged with 83 counts of attempted murder. Joseph David Emerson, 44, faces the litany of homicide charges along with an additional 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft, police documents show. Emerson is believed to have been sat in the jump seat beside the operating pilot on board a Embraer 175 plane flying from Everett in suburban Seattle to San Francisco. He is accused of attempting to deploy the fire suppression system before crew members managed to 'subdue' him and remove him from the controls, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines said the flight, which departed Washington state at 5.23pm, was diverted to Portland International Airport following the 'security threat'.

A native of Richland, Washington, Secretary Mattis enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve at the age of 18. After graduating from Central Washington University in 1971, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

 

During his more than four decades in uniform, Secretary Mattis commanded Marines at all levels, from an infantry rifle platoon to a Marine Expeditionary Force. He led an infantry battalion in Iraq in 1991, an expeditionary brigade in Afghanistan after the 9/11 terror attack in 2001, a Marine Division in the initial attack and subsequent stability operations in Iraq in 2003, and led all U.S. Marine Forces in the Middle East as Commander, I Marine Expeditionary Force and U.S. Marine Forces Central Command.

World's oldest dog Bobi dies at 31

Bobi exclusively ate human food, was never leashed, says owner in Portugal

Bobi, the purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal who was the world’s oldest dog, has passed away at the age of 31.

 

Guinness World Records says Bobi died Saturday at his home in Conqueiros, Portugal,after living for 31 years and 165 days.

 

The organization cited Bobi’s owner, Leonel Costa, as saying that he was never tied up or leashed during his life and as he got older, spent most of his time in the backyard of his property hanging out with cats.

 

Costa also said Bobi exclusively ate human food that was watered down before serving in order to remove seasonings, according to Guinness World Records.

 

"What we ate, [he] ate too," Costa told the organization.

 

The American Kennel Club identifies Rafeiro do Alentejo dogs are medium-sized livestock guardian canines that have a typical life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

 

Bobi’s certified birth records reportedly state he was born on May 11, 1992, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Bobi’s age was also verified by the Companion Animal Information System, a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government and managed by the National Union of Veterinarians.

 

Bobi broke the "oldest dog living" record that was recently reached by an Ohio-based chihuahua named Spike, 23, and the "oldest dog ever" record that was long-established by an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, 29, who lived from 1910 to 1939, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Guinness World Records reportedly received evidence of Bobi’s age two weeks after the publication announced Spike’s title as the world’s oldest living dog.

==Japan FTC Launches Probe into Google=

 

Tokyo, Oct. 23 (Jiji Press)–Japan's Fair Trade Commission said Monday that it has opened an investigation into Google LLC on suspicion of unreasonably demanding that smartphone makers favor its apps over rival products, in violation of the antimonopoly law. 
   It was the first time for the FTC to disclose an individual case at the initial stage of its probe.
   U.S. and European regulatory authorities concluded through their investigations into the U.S. technology giant that the company unfairly restricted competition for more than a decade. The FTC suspects that Google may have tried to take an advantageous position in the Japanese smartphone market.
   According to the FTC, Google allegedly asked Android mobile device makers to install on their devices its own search app Google Search and browser app Google Chrome in exchange for allowing their devices to feature its dedicated app store. Google also requested that the apps be given preferential treatment when makers decide where to place their icons on screen.
   The U.S. firm also allegedly formed contracts with smartphone makers to provide them with part of advertising revenues in exchange for not preinstalling rival search engine apps on their devices, the FTC said.

Slow down WHO’s power grab: Nations must opt out of IHR amendments before 1 December

In 2022, the World Health Assembly quietly agreed to reduce the period during which nations have to opt out of future amendments to the International Health Regulations. We didn’t agree to this, they just did it.

 

For nations to retain the longer 18-month period previously allowed for nations to opt out, countries need to send the World Health Organisation a short note that they are opting out of the amendments decided by the World Health Assembly in 2022.

 

This will slow down the “warp speed” at which WHO is trying to gain sovereignty over nations’ health and emergency management and send a message to the world that your nation is not happy about what WHO is doing.

Israel and Hamas claim to represent their people while getting them killed

 

The latest war in the Holy Land offers no clear-cut victories, as civilians on both sides suffer from the effects of poor leadership

 

As war rages again in the Middle East, with Israel and Hamas vowing to exterminate each other, the one thing we can be sure of is that neither belligerent will achieve real victory or lasting peace. As usual, that’s probably not even the real goal for the so-called leaders on either side.

 

Israeli and Hamas officials both claim to be killing the bad guys in order to defend their people, but their actions seem to suggest otherwise. A Hamas official, for instance, told Al-Jazeera TV that the group’s October 7 cross-border attacks in southern Israel were necessary to defend “the dignity and freedom” of the Palestinian people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged in response to “demolish Hamas” and to ensure that such attacks against his country’s people never happen again.

 

An examination of the tactics on both sides, past and present, shows that these bitter rivals have been either grossly misguided in trying to achieve their stated goals, or lying about their true motivations. Perhaps it’s some of both.

 

There was certainly no “dignity” or “freedom” being pursued when Hamas fighters stormed across the border in order to kill or capture as many civilians as possible. The terrorists murdered about 1,300 people, including babies in their beds, and took hundreds of hostages back to Gaza. Some of the gory details are in dispute, but it’s safe to say that Hamas purposely murdered non-combatants and kidnapped men, women and children.

 

It's also safe to say that no sane leader could have supposed that such an atrocity would serve the interests of the Palestinian people. Hamas militants knew that civilians in Gaza City would pay a heavy price when Israel responded to the attacks, especially since the group has purposely stationed its command centers and weapons caches in or under apartment buildings, hospitals, mosques and schools. They also knew that their bloody rampage would leave the Palestinian people further away from a peace deal – perhaps further than ever – that would create their own state.

 

That’s by design, of course, because Hamas refuses to recognize Israel or seek any sort of two-state solution. The group’s original founding document called for the obliteration of Israel and the killing of Jews. Hamas aims to create a Palestinian state by force, “from the river to the sea.”

 

Knowing the genocidal ideology of Hamas and its track record of killing Israelis, it’s hard to fathom how the West Jerusalem government, supposedly so devoted to protecting its citizens, could allow the October 7 attacks to happen. Despite warnings from Egyptian officials, Israeli forces were caught off-guard and took hours to arrive at the scene. For example, concert-goers at a music festival where the terrorists killed an estimated 260 people reportedly had to wait more than six hours for help to arrive.

Hundreds of suspected violent criminals released without bail in Washington

 

Washington judges released hundreds of suspected violent criminals without bail, the Spokesman-Review reported Sunday.

 

Records obtained by the outlet revealed that many people accused of serious violent crimes — including rape, child molestation, assaults, vehicular homicide, and death threats — were allowed to await trial at home instead of being locked inside a jail cell. Such individuals were reportedly released 665 times in Spokane County from January 2021 to September 2023.

 

A former Spokane police officer accused of raping two women, a man accused of punching a nurse, and another man accused of slashing someone’s face with a handsaw were all released without bail.

 

County Commissioner Al French told the Spokesman-Review that the findings are “alarming.”

 

“We are assessing how to respond,” French said. He noted that at one time, he believed the releases were linked to overcrowding, but added that judges have claimed not to make decisions based on jail capacity.

Democrat-Appointed Colorado Judge Green Lights Effort to Kick Trump Off 2024 Ballot

 

A Colorado judge Friday denied a motion by Donald Trump and the Colorado GOP to throw out a lawsuit seeking to block Trump from appearing on the ballot in Colorado.

 

The ruling was issued by Judge Sarah Wallace, a Colorado district court judge.

 

Wallace was appointed to the bench earlier this year by Democrat Gov. Jared Polis.

 

Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, faces challenges to appear on the ballot in multiple states based on his alleged role in events of January 6, 2021. Those lawsuits cite the Fourteenth Amendment, ratified in the aftermath of the Civil War, which bans those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding public office.

 

Trump has not been convicted of insurrection and was acquitted by the U.S. Senate of charges of engaging in insurrection.

 

He continues to deny wrongdoing.

 

In denying Trump and the Colorado GOP’s motions, the Colorado court did not rule on the merits of the case. Trump still has one additional motion pending to throw out the case.

 

If that motion fails, the trial is expected to begin October 30 with Wallace presiding.

 

Trump’s motion made the case that his actions on January 6 were on “public issues” and therefore protected by free speech rights under the First Amendment to the Constitution. In her opinion, Wallace said that a Colorado free speech law did not in this case.

 

A Trump campaign spokesperson pushed back on Wallace for allowing the case to proceed.

 

“[Wallace] is going against the clear weight of legal authority. We are confident the rule of law will prevail, and this decision will be reversed – whether at the Colorado Supreme Court, or at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Blinken Rejects Idea of Gaza Ceasefire Despite Massive Child Casualties

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday rejected the idea of the US calling for a ceasefire in Gaza when confronted with the massive number of child casualties in Israel’s onslaught.

 

“UNICEF says 1,524 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip during these bombings. Why isn’t the US calling for at least a temporary ceasefire?” Margaret Brennan, the host of CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” asked Blinken.

 

Blinken claimed that the death of children on both sides hits him “right in the heart” but did not criticize Israel’s vicious bombing campaign. He pointed to US efforts to get Israel to allow aid trucks to enter Gaza through Egypt, and Brennan then asked why the US isn’t pushing for at least a temporary ceasefire.

 

“Israel has to do everything it can to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Blinken said, referring to the October 7 Hamas attack. “Freezing things in place where they are now would allow Hamas to remain where it is and to repeat what it’s done some time in the future. No country could accept that,” Blinken said.

 

Blinken made a similar argument earlier this year when rejecting the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine ahead of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, saying a pause in fighting would only benefit Russia. Now, it’s clear Ukraine’s counteroffensive has failed after months of brutal fighting and heavy Ukrainian casualties.

 

During the interview with Brennan, Blinken also claimed it was Hamas’s fault that American citizens in Gaza could not leave despite the fact that the enclave is under Israeli blockade and Egypt has not been letting people enter its territory from its one border crossing with Gaza.

 

“We’ve had people come to Rafah, the crossing with Egypt. And to date, at least, Hamas has blocked them from leaving, showing once again, its total disregard for civilians of any kind who are — who are stuck in Gaza,” Blinken said. “So really, the ball is in Hamas’ court, in terms of letting people who want to leave, civilians from third countries, including Americans get out of Gaza.”

 

Despite Blinken’s claim, reports in recent days have said dual citizens were told to go to the Rafah border crossing but were not allowed into Egypt. According to a report from NBC News, there are up to 600 Americans stuck in Gaza, and they say they’re not receiving help from the US to get out. “America’s not helping us, Biden’s not helping us, the embassy is not helping us,” Amir Kaoud, a Palestinian-American at the Rafah crossing, told NBC.

Defense for Children International-Palestine has received $165,000 from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund since 2018 and propagates shoddy research that is weaponized by Israel’s detractors to delegitimize the Jewish state. Since Israel began retaliatory strikes against Hamas, it has amplified the false claim that an Israeli airstrike killed 500 Palestinians at the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza on Tuesday. Democratic lawmakers have relied on the group’s flawed statistics to push anti-Israel legislation in the House. In May, nearly 30 Democrats led by Rep. Betty McCollum (Minn.) introduced a bill accusing Israel of wrongfully detaining Palestinian children, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

 

Defense for Children International-Palestine’s ties to terror were public knowledge long before Israel designated the group a terrorist organization in 2021. The Jerusalem Post reported in 2018 that many of the group's top officials and board members were linked to the PFLP, a U.S.-designated terrorist group. At the time, Stephen Heintz, the fund’s president, defended the group’s support for Defense of Children International-Palestine, telling the Jerusalem Post in a letter to the editor that he was "convinced" that none of the group’s resources funded terrorist activity.

Israeli President Confirms IDF Found Hamas Files on How to Make Chemical Weapons; Report

 

According to an Axios report, Israeli President Isaac Herzog confirmed over the weekend that the IDF has located files on a Hamas USB drive that contain instructions on how to build chemical weapons.

 

Herzog confirmed the findings in an interview with Sky News.

 

“This is how shocking the situation is where we’re looking at the instructions that are given on how to operate and how to create a kind of non-professional chemical weapon with cyanide,” Herzog said.

Axios reported on Saturday that the Israeli Foreign Ministry’s weapons of mass destruction non-proliferation department sent a classified cable to Israeli embassies in dozens of capitals worldwide, including Washington, late last week under the headline: “Hamas intention of using chemical weapons.”

 

• The authenticity of the Hamas file could not be independently verified by Axios, but Israeli officials have previously said they wouldn’t share information with allies if they didn’t think it was authentic and reliable.

CBS News’s “60 Minutes” broadcast the discussion on Sunday after host Scott Pelley met with the five in Palo Alto, California, where they emphasized that Silicon Valley was one of China’s top targets for hacking and influence operations.

 

The five intelligence chiefs include the United States’ Christopher Wray, Director of the FBI; Australia’s Mike Burgess, Director-General of Security; Canada’s David Vigneault; Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service; the United Kingdom’s Ken McCallum, Director General of MI5; and New Zealand’s Andrew Hampton, Director-General and Chief Executive of the Government Communication Security Bureau.

 

“The People’s Republic of China represents the defining threat of this generation this era,” said Wray. “There is no country that presents a broader, more comprehensive threat to our ideas, our innovation, our economic security, and ultimately our national security. We have seen efforts by the Chinese government, directly or indirectly, trying to steal intellectual property, trade secrets, personal data — all across the country. We’re talking everything from Fortune 100 companies, all to smaller startups. We’re talking about agriculture, biotech, health care, robotics, aviation, academic research. We probably have somewhere in the order of 2,000 active investigations that are just related to the Chinese government’s effort to steal information.”

 

Burgess acknowledged that, to an extent, all countries spy, although it’s mainly done so that countries can be “covertly informed” about what their adversaries are doing.

 

“But the behavior we’re talking about here goes well beyond traditional espionage,” Burgess said. “This scale of the theft is unprecedented in human history. And that’s why we’re calling it out.”

 

The five chiefs in the last week held 15 meetings with top leaders and executives in Silicon Valley and at Stanford University, warning them about the threats the Chinese pose to the national security of the U.S. and its partners.

 

“This is not just about government secrets or military secrets. It’s not even just about critical infrastructure,” McCallum said. “It’s about academic research in our universities. It’s about promising startup companies. People, in short, who probably don’t think national security is about them.”

 

The Chinese target civilians working in the private sector through various traditional means for either hacking or influence operations.

 

McCallum is director general of MI5, the U.K.’s FBI.

 

“You have the biggest hacking program in the world by far, bigger than ever other major nation combined,” Wray said of what China is currently doing. “Stolen more of our personal and corporate data than every nation, big or small, combined.”

 

Wray warned that the threat was more serious than people realized and has “flesh and blood, kitchen-table consequences.”

 

He referenced an American wind turbine company from which the Chinese stole intellectual property, costing the company its competitive advantage and resulting in hundreds of people losing their jobs.

If hostilities break out with the United States, Tehran may try to minimize risk to its most important assets in the Middle East by drawing on black ops units further abroad instead.

 

After Iran shot down an American drone in the Gulf last month, U.S. forces were reportedly ten minutes away from firing missiles at Iranian targets when the President suddenly called off the attack. The missile strikes would have killed too many Iranians, he later said, adding he was in no hurry to attack Iran but that “our military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go.” U.S. officials insist that a “full range of options" remain on the table to deal with Iran’s malign activities, including military options.

 

But those military options could have significant implications for the security of Washington’s allies in the region, including Israel, especially as they relate to the activities of Iran’s increasingly capable proxies. As tensions spike between Iran and the West—especially over oil sanctions and freedom of navigation in the Gulf—Iran has been able to draw upon its network of militant proxies to carry out attacks on Iran’s behalf. In the words of former IRGC commander Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, “The upside of the recent (conflicts) has been the mobilization of a force of nearly 200,000 armed youths in different countries in the region.”

 

Overseen by the IRGC’s Qods Force, this informal “Shia Liberation Army” includes Iraqi Shia militias, Yemeni Houthi rebels, and of course Lebanese Hezbollah. Houthi rebels have targeted Saudi airports, border towns, oil facilities, and even targeted a Saudi warship using an Iranian-designed remote-controlled boat filled with explosives. Meanwhile, Iraqi militias have fought in Syria, reshaped the Iraqi political and security landscape in Iran’s favor, fired rockets at U.S. diplomatic and military facilities in Iraq, and carried out a drone attack targeting Saudi oil facilities. Iran loaded rockets into launchers on Iranian commercial boats in the Gulf in May, just weeks after U.S. intelligence determined Tehran told its proxies to prepare to take a more confrontational approach to the U.S.

 

Israel is very much within these proxies’ crosshairs as well. “If the U.S. attacks us, only half an hour will remain of Israel’s lifespan,” threatened Mojtaba Zolnour, chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

 

Hyperbole aside, Iran has reportedly begun providing Iraqi Shia militia groups with precision missiles capable of hitting targets anywhere in Israel, perhaps to compensate for the attack platforms Iran lost in Syria as a result of Israeli airstrikes. Recently, press reports claim Israeli jets targeted Iranian missile shipments in Iraq that were meant to be transferred on to Hezbollah.

SHOCKER: Feds Sound the Alarm on the Potential Infiltration of Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Hezbollah in US Southern Border

 

Federal officials have sounded the alarm on the potential infiltration of members belonging to Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Hezbollah through the southern border, as highlighted in an internal memo dated Oct. 20, exclusively obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

 

The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, which escalated with terror attacks on civilians on October 7, has the federal authorities on high alert.

 

The San Diego Field Office Intelligence Division of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent the memo warning about potential encounters with members linked to terrorist organizations in the US Southern border.

 

“San Diego Field Office Intelligence Unit assesses that individuals inspired by, or reacting to the current Israel-Hamas conflict may attempt travel to or from the area of hostilities in the Middle East via circuitous transit across the Southwest border,” the memo reads.

 

“Foreign fighters motivated by ideology or mercenary soldiers of fortune may attempt to obfuscate travel to or from the US to or from countries in the Middle East through Mexico,” the memo adds.

 

This new development comes after Rep. Jamaal Bowman and other leftists are already calling on the United States to take in Palestinian refugees from Gaza.

 

FBI Director Chris Wray issued a dire warning about the rise of violent extremism.

 

“Before I get into some of the specific ways we’re doing that work together, I want to take a moment to offer my heartfelt condolences to the people of Israel, and share the outrage that I know we all feel at the sheer brutality and disregard for innocent lives there,” said Wray.

 

“History has been witness to antisemitic and other forms of violent extremism for far too long. Whether that be from foreign terrorist organizations, or those inspired by them, or domestic violent extremists motivated by their own racial animus, the targeting of a community because of their faith is totally unacceptable,” he added.

 

Wray indicated that there has been a significant uptick in reported threats following the attacks, cautioning the public to remain vigilant for “lone actors.”

Louisiana GOP Rep. Johnson announces bid for House speaker

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, lost three bids for speaker and is no longer the GOP speaker nominee.

House Republican Vice Chair Mike Johnson, R-La., announced his candidacy for House speaker in a letter on Saturday addressed to his colleagues.

 

“I have been humbled to have so many Members from across our Conference reach out to encourage me to seek the nomination for Speaker,” Johnson wrote in a letter obtained by The Hill. “Until yesterday, I had never contacted one person about this, and I have never before aspired to the office. However, after much prayer and deliberation, I am stepping forward now.”

 

Others who have declared their candidacies include House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., Republican Study Committee Chairman Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., and Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Tx.

The House has been without a speaker for more than two weeks since the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., by eight Republicans.

 

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, lost three bids for speaker and is no longer the GOP speaker nominee.

 

In Johnson's letter, addressed to his colleagues, he expressed the importance of tackling the national debt and being strong on foreign policy.

 

“As Israel is viciously attacked, Russia, China and our other adversaries are becoming more emboldened," Johnson wrote. "Our national debt has surpassed $33.5 trillion, our southern border is overrun, violent crime is rampant, and the rising cost of living is crushing our constituents."

 

“The complex role of Speaker at this time requires a team player and a bridge-builder with endless energy and a unique mix of skills and experiences,” he added. “My extensive background in law, policy, strategic analysis, messaging, managing, networking, and building coalitions happens to have served as an uncommon preparation for the extraordinary demands of this day.”

Trump wins three-way race with Biden, RFK Jr.: poll

Former President Donald Trump would emerge as the victor of a three-way presidential race including President Joe Biden and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a recent survey has revealed.

 

Trump claimed 39% support in a recent Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, originally published by The Hill. Biden trailed with 33% to Kennedy's 19%. A further 9% were undecided. Of those, 42% would back Trump if they had to make a decision, 36% would choose Biden, and 22% would opt for Kennedy.

 

Kennedy originally announced his campaign as a Democratic challenger to President Joe Biden, but in October dropped that bid in favor of an independent run amid frustrations with the party. The Democratic National Committee chose not to hold primary debates despite the presence of two challengers to Biden: Kennedy and Hollywood author Marianne Williamson.

 

Removing Kennedy from the contest, Trump remains the clear leader in the White House race, taking 5% lead over Biden, 46% to 41%. On average, Trump leads by 0.6%, according to RealClearPolitics.

 

"Trump’s polling continues to defy gravity both in the primary and the general election. Kennedy right now doesn’t change the result — an election held today would elect Donald Trump," poll co-director Mark Penn said.

 

In the Republican primary, Trump remains the front runner, earning 60% support to nearest rival Ron DeSantis's 11%. Conducted Oct. 18-19, the survey questioned 2,116 registered voters.

 

Kennedy's candidacy has attracted considerable attention as a potential spoiler for either candidate, though his bid is not the only campaign outside of the two traditional parties. Left-wing intellectual Cornel West has also declared his candidacy.

Upday, an app owned by the German media giant Axel Springer, is instructing journalists to cover the war in Gaza with a pro-Israel bent.

 

AS ISRAELI BOMBING raids virtually eliminated internet access in the Gaza Strip over the weekend, one of the largest media companies in Europe was pushing its own initiative to limit online news about civilian casualties in Palestine.

 

Upday, the largest news aggregator app in Europe, handed down directives to color the company’s coverage of the war in Gaza with pro-Israel sentiment, according to interviews with employees and internal documents obtained by The Intercept.

 

Leadership at Upday, a subsidiary of the Germany-based publishing giant Axel Springer, gave instructions to prioritize the Israeli perspective and minimize Palestinian civilian deaths in coverage, according to the employees.

 

“We can’t push anything involving Palestinian death tolls or casualties without information about Israel coming higher up in the story.”

An overwhelming majority of New Jerseyans want Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez to resign amid his indictment for alleged bribery and Foreign Agents Registration Acts (FARA) violations, a recent survey has shown.

 

Menendez pleaded not guilty to fraud, bribery, and extortion charges in late September. Prosecutors said that they discovered gold bars and large sums of cash at his home. The New Jersey Democrat was hit with a superseding indictment this month, alleging his acted as foreign agent for Egypt.

 

He has thus far resisted calls to resign, though polling data shows him to be at odds with his constituents on the matter. A recent survey from Farleigh Dickinson University indicated that 70% of residents want him out of the Senate.

 

That figure includes 80% of Republicans, 67% of independents, and 71% of Democrats.

 

FDU professor Dan Cassino highlighted the lawmaker's prior run-ins with the law, which featured heavily during his last campaign, and opined that the public appeared weary of him in light of the latest charges.

 

"Menendez has been able to weather charges in the past," he said. "But this time, it just doesn’t seem like he has any real support left."

 

Just 16% of New Jerseyans say Menendez should serve out the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2025.

 

While he has refused to leave office, he did step down from his post as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in accordance with Democratic conference rules.

Off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot charged with attempted murder after trying to shut down plane engines midflight

 

Flight 2059 from Everett, Washington, was bound for San Francisco when it was diverted to Portland, where Joseph David Emerson was booked on 83 counts of attempted murder.

 

An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot has been charged with over 80 counts of attempted murder after he allegedly attempted to shut off a plane's engines midflight on Sunday, causing the flight to divert to Portland.

Flight 2059 took off from Everett, Washington, and was bound for San Francisco, Alaska Airlines said in a statement. It was operated by Alaska Airlines subsidiary Horizon Air, but was diverted due to a “credible security” threat linked to a person in the cockpit’s flight deck jump seat.

"The jump seat occupant unsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the operation of the engines," the airline said. "The Horizon Captain and First Officer quickly responded, engine power was not lost and the crew secured the aircraft without incident."

The flight crew followed “appropriate FAA procedures and guidance from air traffic control” in landing at Portland International Airport. The flight took off just before 5:30 p.m. local time and landed about an hour later in Portland, according to FlightAware data.

Audio of the plane's communications with air traffic control reveal an attempt to turn off the plane's engines.

“As a heads up. We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. It doesn’t sound like he’s got any issue in the back right now. I think he’s subdued," the pilot of the plane told air traffic control. "Other than that we want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked.”

Typically, off-duty airline pilots sit in the jump seat of the flight deck behind the pilots to fly back to their home base if seats are available.

After landing, Joseph David Emerson, 44, was arrested by Port of Portland police.

He was booked on 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment, and a count of endangering an aircraft, according to Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office booking records.

The FBI said it is investigating the incident and noted no injuries were reported. The agency said it “can assure the traveling public there is no continuing threat related to this incident.” Meanwhile, the FAA said it is "engaged with Alaska and Horizon airlines" and "is supporting law enforcement investigations."

The FAA sent alerts to airlines after the Horizon Air incident saying “a validated jump seat passenger attempted to disable aircraft engines while at cruise altitude by deploying the engine fire suppressions system.”

The crew was ultimately able to “subdue the subject,” remove them from the flight deck, divert the plane and land safely, the alert said.

In a second notification, the FAA clarified that the security event is not connected to current world events.

All passengers were able to travel on a later flight.

“We are grateful for the professional handling of the situation by the Horizon flight crew and appreciate our guests’ calm and patience throughout this event,” Alaska Airlines said.

Hamas refuses to prove ‘Israeli strike’ on Gaza hospital – NYT

The projectile that struck the parking lot of the Baptist Hospital in Gaza cannot be inspected, a Hamas spokesperson has told the New York Times. Israel has denied responsibility for last week’s deadly strike, claiming it was a misfired rocket by another Palestinian group.

 

“The missile has dissolved like salt in the water,” Ghazi Hamad, a senior Hamas official, told the US outlet in a phone interview on Sunday. “It’s vaporized. Nothing is left.”

 

“Who says we’re obligated to present the remnants of every rocket that kills our people?In general, you can come and research and confirm for yourself from the evidence we possess,” Salama Maroof, a spokesperson for the Hamas-run government in Gaza, said in a text message. (They are using the Ukraine excuse for all they do, it’s Russia)

 

Al Ahli Arab, also known as the Baptist Hospital, is one of the oldest medical facilities in Gaza. Last Tuesday’s explosion damaged the building and killed a number of Palestinian civilians seeking shelter from Israeli airstrikes.

 

By Wednesday, Israel was blaming Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), saying one of their missiles malfunctioned and struck the hospital compound. Israel claims that more than 550 rockets launched by Hamas and PIJ during the current conflict have struck their own territory.

 

When asked by the Times to provide logs of Israel Defense Force (IDF) activity in the area at the time, as well as other evidence supporting their claim of Palestinian responsibility, the Israeli government declined.

 

“We have made mistakes, I am not going to deny it,” Musab Al-Breim, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad told the Times in an interview last Wednesday. “However, not mistakes of this size.”

 

Any remnants of the munition that struck the hospital’s parking lot appeared to have been removed by the time Western reporters arrived on the site the following morning, according to the Times.

 

Gaza authorities have initially estimated up to 833 deaths from the blast, before revising that number to 471. However, the Hamas-run health ministry has declined to release further details about the victims, saying that not all of them have been identified. According to a local doctor quoted by Reuters, more than 3,000 people were sheltering inside the hospital compound at the time, many of them residents displaced by Israeli airstrikes.

 

Israel declared war on Hamas after the October 7 attacks by the Gaza-based group on nearby villages, towns and military bases, in which an estimated 1,400 Israelis have died. Israeli artillery and air strikes have since killed over 4,300 Palestinians, 40% of them children, Gaza health authorities have said. According to the New York Times, this “high reported death toll has undermined international support for Israel’s counterattack.”

 

Last week’s hospital attack was condemned by the Arab League, the African Union, the EU, UN, and World Health Organization, as well as Russia, China, India, and Türkiye. Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, and Türkiye blamed Israel. Canada, Brazil, France, and Germany denounced the attack but did not name the culprit. US President Joe Biden said he was “outraged and deeply saddened by the explosion” but endorsed Israel’s version of events.

The Insane Idea That Nations Get To Do War Crimes Whenever Something Bad Happens To Them

 

One of the most destructive ideas in modern times is this notion that it’s fine and appropriate for governments to act like monsters whenever anything bad happens to their country. We saw it happen with the United States after 9/11, and we’re seeing it now with Israel.

 

Dropping military explosives on children is just as wrong now as it was on October 6th. Wars of aggression were just as wrong on September 12th 2001 as they were on September 10th. But there’s this idiotic belief in mainstream culture that a nation experiencing a traumatic event means it gets to go on a murderous rampage until it feels better.

 

As soon as the Hamas attack occurred we were inundated with messaging from the western political/media class which conveyed the idea that because something bad happened to Israel, Israel now gets to do a little genocide, as a treat. This is stupid nonsense, and should be rejected by all thinking people.
