When the high-flying CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch boards his $50 million corporate jet, he doesn’t want to see the “end square” of the toilet paper folded in the lavatory.
So Michael Jeffries made clear his wishes in a highly detailed 47-page “Aircraft Standards” rulebook for the crew.
Among the manual’s demands:
-
Male staffers are to be clean-shavenand wear a uniform ofAbercrombie polo shirts, flip-flops and a “spritz” of the firm’s cologne — andboxer briefs. All staffers must wear sunglasses.
-
When Jeffries, 68, or boyfriend Matthew Smith make a request, the reply must be, “No problem” — not, “Just a minute,” or “Sure.”
-
Stewards must wear black gloves to handle silverware — but white gloves to set the table.
-
Toilet paper must not be “exposed” and its “end square” should not be folded. “Washclothes are to be tri-folded.”

The staffers, described as actors and models, were also instructed to check for fingerprints on the Gulfstream G550 jet, arrange fresh flowers, center salt and pepper on meal trays, properly fold seat-belt buckles — and make sure the Phil Collins song “Take Me Home” is playing when passengers board.
Details of the manual came to light in a federal age-discrimination lawsuit filed in 2010 by former pilot Michael Stephen Bustin, now 55, who said he was fired and replaced by a younger pilot.
The clothing company’s general counsel said the suit was without merit and refused to comment on the rulebook. Jeffries has been praised for his attention to detail as head of the retailer, which posted revenue of $4.2 billion in the latest fiscal year.
The aircraft rulebook tells crew to “bring Michael’s lucky wallet to him” after they present him with copies of Abercrombie’s nonpublic reports.
Jeffries is also particular about his caffeine. He drinks Assam tea in the morning but switches to Darjeeling after 2 p.m.
On flights longer than two hours, crew members can have a meal — but “if the passengers are eating cold food, crew members are not to eat hot meals.”
There are also instructions for handling Jeffries and Smith’s dogs, Ruby, Trouble and Sammy.
“When Ruby and Trouble travel, Ruby will sit opposite Michael in the cabin, in Sammy’s seat. When Sammy travels, Ruby will sit in Trouble’s seat,” the manual says.

Other meticulous details in the manual allegedly include that toilet paper must not be 'exposed' and its end square should not be folded. Washcloths - of which there should be eight - should be tri-folded.
Stewards must wear black gloves when handling silverware and white for laying the table and should reply 'no problem', rather than 'sure' when asked to do anything by either Jeffries, 68, or his boyfriend Matthew Smith, 49.
Staff must also wear sunglasses and they are banned from wearing coats unless the temperature falls below 50F.
Carpets are to be vacuumed in perfectly straight lines, there are to be no fingerprints anywhere in the cabin and the crew are also required to play Phil Collins' Take Me Home as the jet takes off on homeward bound flights.
Details of the manual came to light in a federal age-discrimination lawsuit filed in 2010 by former pilot Michael Stephen Bustin, now 55, who said he was fired and replaced by a younger pilot.
The original complaint stated: 'Smith and Jeffries made disparaging and exclusionary comments about older individuals and made it clear to [Bustin] that [Abercrombie & Fitch] preferred younger people as employees, in keeping with its "young" corporate image.'
The document, obtained by Bloomberg News, even details seating arrangements for Jeffries' dogs Ruby, Trouble and Sammy.
The aircraft rulebook tells crew to 'bring Michael’s lucky wallet to him' after they present him with copies of Abercrombie’s nonpublic reports, according to the New York Post.
They must also arrange fresh flowers and serve the 68-year-old Assam tea in the morning but Darjeeling after 2pm.
On flights longer than two hours, crew members may have a meal — but 'if the passengers are eating cold food, crew members are not to eat hot meals'. The meal must also not be 'aromatic'.
Smith conducted monthly inspections of the jet hanger, according to a witness deposition, and was said to have an 'affinity for cleanliness and tidiness', the witness said.
Once, when a jet mechanic showed up with an American flag sticker on his tool chest, Smith allegedly asked him to remove it because he wanted things to be 'clean looking'.
Abercrombie's general counsel, Rocky Robins, told Bloomberg that Bustin's claim was without merit and refused to comment on the rule book.
The cabin crew are provided by model agency Cosmopolitan, according to a 2009 agreement with Jet Aviation Business Jets.
Cosmopolitan states on its website that it provides 'professional male and female models, expertly groomed and trained to host your event, promotion, product launch, or opening'.
Abercrombie & Fitch is known for its young, attractive male staff, who are often stationed outside the store topless, attracting a host of young customers - a key part of its success.
Between 1995 and 2008 the clothing chain's sales increased 22-fold and net profits almost 58-fold, according to Bloomberg.

Abercrombie & Fitch ex-CEO accused of exploiting men for sex
By Rianna Croxford, investigations correspondent
BBC News and BBC Panorama
2 October 2023
The ex-CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch and his British partner face allegations of exploitation from men recruited for sex events they hosted around the world.
A BBC investigation founda highly organised network used a middleman to find young men for the events with Mike Jeffries and Matthew Smith.
But the couple's middleman denied any wrongdoing and said men went into these events "with their eyes wide open".
Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) - which also owns the Hollister brand - said it was "appalled and disgusted" by the alleged behaviour.
Two former US prosecutors who independently reviewed documents and testimony uncovered by the BBC have called for an investigation to determine whether charges for sex trafficking could be brought. Under US law, sex trafficking includes getting an adult to travel to another state or country to have sex for money by using force, fraud or coercion.
Warning: This story contains descriptions of sexual acts
Over two decades from the 1990s, Mike Jeffries transformed A&F from a failing heritage outfitter into a multi-billion-dollar teen retailer by selling sex appeal, with preppy all-American shirtless male store models and provocative billboards.
Eight men told the BBC they attended these events, some of whom alleged they were exploited or abused.
Mr Jeffries and Mr Smith did not respond to requests for comment.
