Mike Johnson bucks trend of House speakers owning high-dollar assets: 'Man of the people'

Johnson's personal finances prove he is 'a man of the people,' GOP Rep. Cammack told Fox News Digital

Newly elected GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson's financial portfolio represents a substantial divergence from his predecessors who owned millions of dollars in assets and actively traded stocks.

According to Johnson's most recent annual financial disclosure report filed in August, he doesn't own any stocks and reported only liabilities — a 2013 home mortgage worth up to $500,000, a personal loan of up to $50,000 from 2016 and a home equity line of credit of up to $50,000 he secured in 2019.

Johnson's disclosures, though, were scrutinized, and a reporter raised questions about the new speaker's financial health.

Jordan Libowitz, an ethics expert, was quoted recently saying Johnson's disclosure was "strange" and could make him "ripe for influence buying," while Brett Kappel, a government ethics expert at Harmon Curran, added it was "very unusual for a member not to have to disclose at least one bank account."

But Johnson's financial situation appears to closely mirror that of a large share of Americans, according to Federal Reserve survey data. Survey data from 2019 concluded that the median account balance for American households is $5,300, and data from 2020 showed just 64% of Americans had enough money readily available to pay for a $400 emergency.

"For years, we’ve heard calls and demands for members of Congress to look more like the people they represent," Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., a close Johnson ally, told Fox News Digital. "Today, we have a speaker who is not independently wealthy, who does not own or trade stocks and, per House financial reporting disclosures rules, is not required to disclose his federal employee retirement funds.

"It’s clear now with Speaker Johnson at the helm that the people’s House is run by just that — a man of the people," she continued. "I find it deeply hypocritical that Democrats and the leftist media are upset about Speaker Johnson when their own former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is a multimillionaire."

A spokesperson for Johnson, R-La., shared social media posts from other GOP lawmakers defending Johnson in response to a Daily Beast article.

"So, to extent accurate, he’s like a lot of Americans right now while also navigating raising a large family? What a monster," Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, wrote.

"The Daily Beast is furious that [Speaker Johnson] isn’t rich, corrupt or rich from being corrupt. He doesn’t have shady business deals. He doesn’t trade stocks as a congressman. Cry more, I guess?" Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., added.

Johnson's disclosure, meanwhile, greatly differs from those filed by recent House speakers.

For example, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reported in his 2022 disclosure he owned up to $800,000 in various assets, including mutual funds traded on the market. He also reported liabilities worth up to $350,000 that include a mortgage and a student loan for one of his children.

McCarthy's predecessor, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., reported in her most recent annual report owning millions of dollars in assets, including various individual stocks. For example, she owns as much as or more than $1 million in Google, Amazon, American Express, Apple, Comcast, Microsoft, Netflix, Salesforce and the Walt Disney Company.

Pelosi, whose net worth is estimated to exceed $100 million, according to Open Secrets, also reported multiple million-dollar financial transactions, activity that led to Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., introducing the so-called Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments (PELOSI) Act, which would prohibit members of Congress and their spouses from holding or trading individual stocks.

"For too long, politicians in Washington have taken advantage of the economic system they write the rules for, turning profits for themselves at the expense of the American people," Hawley said in January.

WHAT HAPPENED

Hamas' military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, announced that they launched a comprehensive attack against Israel called "Al-Aqsa Flood" on the morning of October 7.

While thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel, armed groups entered the settlements in the region. The Israeli army also launched an attack on the Gaza Strip with dozens of warplanes.

When the high-flying CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch boards his $50 million corporate jet, he doesn’t want to see the “end square” of the toilet paper folded in the lavatory.

So Michael Jeffries made clear his wishes in a highly detailed 47-page “Aircraft Standards” rulebook for the crew.

Among the manual’s demands:

The staffers, described as actors and models, were also instructed to check for fingerprints on the Gulfstream G550 jet, arrange fresh flowers, center salt and pepper on meal trays, properly fold seat-belt buckles — and make sure the Phil Collins song “Take Me Home” is playing when passengers board.

Details of the manual came to light in a federal age-discrimination lawsuit filed in 2010 by former pilot Michael Stephen Bustin, now 55, who said he was fired and replaced by a younger pilot.

The clothing company’s general counsel said the suit was without merit and refused to comment on the rulebook. Jeffries has been praised for his attention to detail as head of the retailer, which posted revenue of $4.2 billion in the latest fiscal year.

The aircraft rulebook tells crew to “bring Michael’s lucky wallet to him” after they present him with copies of Abercrombie’s nonpublic reports.

Jeffries is also particular about his caffeine. He drinks Assam tea in the morning but switches to Darjeeling after 2 p.m.

On flights longer than two hours, crew members can have a meal — but “if the passengers are eating cold food, crew members are not to eat hot meals.”

There are also instructions for handling Jeffries and Smith’s dogs, Ruby, Trouble and Sammy.

“When Ruby and Trouble travel, Ruby will sit opposite Michael in the cabin, in Sammy’s seat. When Sammy travels, Ruby will sit in Trouble’s seat,” the manual says.

Steven Tyler accused of 1970s sexual assault by a second woman who was a teen at the time

Steven Tyler forcibly kissed and groped a teenage girl twice in 1975 when the rock singer was 27 and she was 17, a lawsuit filed Thursday alleges.

The suit, filed by Jeanne Bellino in New York City Civil Court and obtained by The Times, is the second in as many years in which a woman has accused the Aerosmith singer, whose legal name is Steven Tallarico, of sexually assaulting her as a teen in the 1970s. The first woman, Julia Misley, sued Tyler in December 2022, alleging sexual assault and sexual battery after meeting the Aerosmith frontman in 1973 when she was 16.

While The Times does not typically identify victims of sexual assault, the women's names were released publicly by their attorney. Jeff Anderson of Anderson and Associates represents the two women in the separate cases.

In the new lawsuit, Anderson alleges that Tyler "used his power, influence, and authority, as a well-known musician to sexually assault" Bellino.

Bellino reached out to Anderson's firm after reading about Misely's case and offered, "I want to help, I'll be a witness, because he did the same thing to me," Anderson recounted at a Thursday news conference announcing the lawsuit. At the event, he called Tyler a "sexual predator."

Attorneys for Tyler did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment. His attorneys previously denied the allegations made in Misley's 2022 lawsuit and requested that the lawsuit be dismissed.

In summer 1975 in New York, Bellino was a teen model and worked for a children's modeling agency, frequently traveling with her modeling friends from her home in Queens into Manhattan for fashion shows, the lawsuit said. After one show, one of her friends, Bellino's ride for the day, arranged for them to meet Aerosmith at a party.

By this point, Tyler and Aerosmith had received international acclaim for their self-titled debut 1973 album and their hit single "Dream On." Their second album, "Get Your Wings," went platinum the following year.

After the show, Bellino and her friend met Tyler, who was with an entourage of about six people, the court document said. While the group walked over to the Warwick Hotel for the party, Bellino laughed and made a comment about one of Tyler's lyrics, the suit said. Tyler allegedly became irritated by Bellino's comment, then grabbed her and forced her into a phone booth, the complaint said. While inside, Tyler allegedly stuck his tongue down her throat and groped her breasts, buttocks and genitals, while removing her clothes and pinning her against the booth, the suit said. He also pretended to have sex with her, rubbing his torso against hers, according to the lawsuit.

The entourage, her friend and passersby watched the incident unfold without intervening, with some laughing, Bellino alleged in the complaint, which also names 50 Does whom she does not know by name as defendants.

Bellino fought back and was eventually able to grab the back of Tyler's head and pulled his long hair to free herself, the suit said. Tyler then allegedly left the booth while Bellino was left to put her clothes back on.

"It's humiliating and degrading and extremely upsetting; it's very dehumanizing to do that to someone," Bellino recalled in a video shared during the news conference. She said the encounter was her first sexual experience with anybody.

At the hotel, Bellino saw her friend go up the elevator and then Tyler allegedly pinned Bellino against the wall a second time, in the dark lobby, continuing to stick his tongue down her throat without her consent, the lawsuit said. Other individuals in the lobby, including employees, had stared on, the suit added. He eventually went up to his hotel room. As she stood in the lobby, figuring out how she would get home, a member of Tyler's entourage told her, "OK, you can go up to his room."

She declined, but the man offered to take her up there and reached out to her, the court document said. She backed away and ran for the door, the lawsuit said, where the doorman grabbed her and flung her into a cab, yelling at the driver, "Go!"

Though she didn't have enough cash to get home, the cab driver agreed to finish the ride for whatever money she had on her after she told him she'd been assaulted, the suit said.

The driver dropped her off about a half-mile from her home, Bellino recalled in the video, her voice shaking, and she ran the rest of the way until collapsing inside her home in tears, crying to her younger sister.

The lawsuit asks for unspecified damages and alleges that Tyler inflicted "physical, psychological, and emotional injuries."

Bellino mentioned in the video that she wanted to help "back up" Misley's account, but also sought accountability for her own experience.

Cosmopolitan states on its website that it provides 'professional male and female models, expertly groomed and trained to host your event, promotion, product launch, or opening'.

Abercrombie & Fitch is known for its young, attractive male staff, who are often stationed outside the store topless, attracting a host of young customers - a key part of its success.

Between 1995 and 2008 the clothing chain's sales increased 22-fold and net profits almost 58-fold, according to Bloomberg.

The ex-CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch and his British partner face allegations of exploitation from men recruited for sex events they hosted around the world.

A BBC investigation founda highly organised network used a middleman to find young men for the events with Mike Jeffries and Matthew Smith.

But the couple's middleman denied any wrongdoing and said men went into these events "with their eyes wide open".

Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) - which also owns the Hollister brand - said it was "appalled and disgusted" by the alleged behaviour.

Two former US prosecutors who independently reviewed documents and testimony uncovered by the BBC have called for an investigation to determine whether charges for sex trafficking could be brought. Under US law, sex trafficking includes getting an adult to travel to another state or country to have sex for money by using force, fraud or coercion.
