US Factory Orders Plunged Most Since COVID Lockdowns In October
The chaotic time series of US Factory Orders was expected to swing to a big loss (-3.00% MoM) in October (data released today) after a big jump in September and big drop in July (and a big jump in June!).
However, factory orders tumbled even more than expected, down 3.6% MoM - the biggest drop since the COVID lockdowns (April 2020).September was also revised lower (making October's decline even worse) from +2.8% MoM to +2.3% MoM…
The big monthly decline and revisions dragged orders down 2.1% YoY(the biggest drop since Sept 2020). Core factory orders also dropped (-1.2% Mom), leaving them down 2.2% YoY - the eight month in a row of annual declines. The final Durable Goods Orders data for October confirmed the preliminary print plunge down 5.4% MoM.
Finally, we note that it could have been a lot worse as .00Defense spending shot up 24.7% MoM (as non-defense dropped 15.8% MoM…hail the Military-Industrial Complex.==

U.S. stocks fell on Monday after rallying the previous week, on caution ahead of a slew of economic data due this week that will likely put to test the narrative of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates by early next year. U.S. stocks kicked off December on an upbeat note, extending gains from the previous month that were driven by robust earnings and expectations that the Fed was done with its rate-hiking campaign.(yeah I’m sure the record level of Corporate Equity Buybacks and Hedge Funds continuing to cover shorts and go long-2x buying pressure-and the Santa Clause PsyOp had nuffin to do with the best November since 1980…/s)
The benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) registered its highest close of the year on Friday as remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell bolstered the peak rates view.
Pressuring equities on Monday were higher U.S. Treasury yields, which made returns on stocks less attractive.Megacap names including Nvidia (NVDA.O), Meta Platforms (META.O) and Apple (AAPL.O) fell between 1.8% and 3.3%.
Shares of Alaska Air Group (ALK.N) dropped 15.8% after the carrier said on Sunday it would acquire peer Hawaiian Holdings (HA.O) for $1.9 billion, including debt. Hawaiian's shares nearly tripled in value. Traders have priced in the likelihood that the central bank will keep rates unchanged next week, with about 58% betting on rate cuts starting as soon as March 2024, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool.
However, some analysts have cautioned that markets have been too quick to price in lower interest rates.
"No one expects any more rate hikes at this point," said Joe Saluzzi, partner and co-founder at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey.

(and right on cue here). Analysts have, however, alluded to the possibility of a Santa Claus rally as equities rebound from a likely mid-December low due to tax loss harvesting - a process in which investors sell underperforming stocks to lock in tax benefits.

A number of economic reports through the week, including November's non-farm payrolls report on Friday, will provide a gauge on the interest rate path as well as the potential for a "soft landing" - where the Fed manages to bring inflation under control, while averting a recession.(Bwahahaha….the only thing that avoids a recession is the rate cut in January and the QE coming shortly after)
