US Steel blocked the initial, unsolicited bid by Cleveland-Cliffs. As the miserable management team at US Steel is wont, they rebuffed it for ANY OTHER TAKERS. US Steel has been mismanaged for at LEAST the last 40 years. Saddled with debt, and ridiculous legacy union costs never, ever addressed (but management bonuses sure have!), the remaining assets might have been covered, cost wise, by better run companies like Cleveland-Cliffs, but the management at US Steel loathes Goncalves at CLF, so no You get a laundered Jap firm accessing US assets that still require massive clean up costs( That they've been blowing off for decades), and all that legacy union cost, that will never be covered. Thus screwing over the ex-employees, one moar time.
So this is not a surprise, and a sad, sad ending to what was once the greatest steel company in the world.
(It's called an editorial note. To save time for those who have little of it to waste with this lazy chit.)

Plaintiffs' lawyers asked for $48 million in damages. DC jury, on its own, raised that to $148 million–a grossly excessive award. For months, Trump has argued that he cannot receive a fair trial before a DC jury. He will cite this as evidence of that.
