A new study reports 309 lab acquired infections and 16 pathogen lab escapes between 2000 and 2021

77% of infections involved bacteria, 14% involved viruses, 7% involved parasites, and a small percentage of cases involved fungi or prions, though the prion case was fatal.

70% of infections were caused by procedural errors, the remainder of known causes was due to spills, splashes, or broken vials.

The vast majority of these infections were 'Risk Group 2' RG2 pathogens.

Overall, from the data collected for this study, the major offender globally were labs based in the United States.
