Trump on guardrails: 'I'd be afraid that it opens and you get speared'

President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed concerns about guardrails, saying, โ€œItโ€™s put together with these screws, right? I always think if I ever went into that sucker Iโ€™d be afraid that it opens and you get speared.โ€

"I want to hire whoever their salesman is," Trump continued. "Heโ€™s the greatest salesman in the world. That is the worst crap.โ€

The Wall Street Journal reported Trump's comments Thursday afternoon in an article headlined, "Talking to Trump: A How-To Guide." The newspaper framed the comments as the president veering off topic during "an early infrastructure session."

But Trump's comments echo safety issues raised by Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer about a controversial model of guardrail end terminal that has now been tied to at least 10 deaths โ€” the Lindsay X-LITE.

It's not clear from the WSJ article when Trump made his comments, but the article comes after an East Tennessee man tried to get a letter about the X-LITE to Trump when the president visited Nashville last week.

On Feb. 6, 2017 George Jansen's 2016 Chevrolet Silverado left Interstate 70 in Missouri and struck a Lindsay X-LITE guardrail. The rectangular hunk of metal jammed in the truckโ€™s engine bay, causing the beam to push Jansen out the rear window as the truck traveled another 168 feet along the guardrail.

'Unacceptable safety levels'

In an April 4, 2017, letter to the Federal Highway Administration, Schroer said Lindsay was "unable to resolve our concerns regarding a lack of bolt torque specifications in their installation instructions," which "could result in the terminal performing differently from the original tested conditions."

TDOT officials found that in some crashes, the guardrail ends โ€” rectangular hunks of metal โ€” separated horizontally from the guardrails and speared vehicles with deadly results, Schroer wrote.

Schroer, who is also president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, noted TDOT had decided to spend millions to replace all of the X-LITE guardrails in the state, a project that is about 45 percent More:Tennessee to replace controversial guardrails as death toll climbs

The guardrails were "resulting in unacceptable safety levels for the department," Schroer wrote.

At least 10 people across five states โ€” including four in Tennessee โ€” have been killed in traffic crashes involving the X-LITE, a type of guardrail that makes up slightly more than 1 percent of all guardrails nationwide..

Several states that use the guardrails have begun replacing them, while several that don't have resolved never to install them.

Guardrail installers in Arizona also reported having difficulty constructing the X-LITE guardrails, while crews in Rhode Island expressed concerns about their quality, according to an FHWA survey obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
