Reporter: Walter Reed said that he [Austin] was diagnosed with cancer last month…[Biden] did not know the diagnosis or that he was hospitalized?
Jean-Pierre: [Biden] was informed…today about the prostate cancer.
Reporter: Is there a lack of trust between the Pentagon and the White House? Why did the Secretary of Defense feel that he did not need to inform the president immediately, the White House immediately, about the diagnosis or the procedure?
Jean-Pierre: We have complete confidence in the secretary…there is a review that the Pentagon is doing.
Reporter: Secretary Austin we now know was under anesthesia on December 22nd. The White House at the time didn't know. What would have happened if there had been some national security emergency at the White House, and the president had called on Secretary Austin on that day?
Kirby: That's a hypothetical, and it's speculative.
