A Trump administration official is critically-ill after being shot during a carjacking in crime-ridden Washington DC, whose perpetrator then killed another victim.
The heavily liberal-leaning city has seen carjackings skyrocket of late, with 953 in 2023 alone, nearly nine times as many as there were in 2018.
Mike Gill, a married father of three, was blasted by the unnamed suspect on K Street NW around 5:45pm Monday. He was collecting his wife, an education lawyer, at the time of the incident and was inside the car when he was struck.
Gill managed to get out of his car, but collapsed shortly afterwards.
He served as chief operating officer of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during Donald Trump's time in the White House. .
A witness told the Washington Post that his wife 'ran toward her husband and grabbed his hand,' asking him what happened, but getting no response.
The victim was wearing 'a dress shirt and sweater, sprawled on the pavement with one foot still in the passenger’s side of a car. His right hand was twitching as blood pooled around his head,' Yolanda Douglas added.
A spokeswoman for Gill said: 'We can confirm that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block of K Street Northwest on Monday evening and is in critical condition.
'Out of respect for the family, we have nothing additional to add at this time.'
Gill's work in government dates back to at least 2016, when the city of Washington appointed him to represent the GOP on their Board of Elections.
He also served as the chief of staff to CFTC Chairman Christopher Giancarlo and was Chief Regulatory Reform Officer for the commission.
He served as a lawyer at a private firm and the vice president of a trade association prior to his government worked.
He was a deputy director of the 1992 Bush-Quayle re-election campaign and also worked for Republican members of the Senate and House, holding a top level security clearance.
The carjacker went on a spree that spanned both Washington DC and Maryland and left at least one man dead, in addition to Gill's injuries.
Over an hour after the shooting that involved Gill, he unsuccessfully tried to carjack someone in the 1000 block of Third Street NE at around 7:05 p.m.
Just ten minutes later, the suspect made a third unsuccessful attempt to carjack a vehicle on Third Street NE, before taking the car of a person he shot, in this case fatally.
Family members identified the victim as 35-year-old Alberto Vazquez, according to NBC Washington.

A self-proclaimed 'messiah' decapitated his 68-year-old father - then held up the victim's head in a politically-charged YouTube video blasting the federal government and the Biden administration.
Justin Mohn, 32, is in custody Pennsylvania after his father Michael was found by his wife, beheaded, inside of the home that the trio shared in the quiet Philadelphia suburb of Levittown.
Early Wednesday, the suspect was charged with murder in the first degree, abuse of a corpse and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.
Hours before his arrest, Mohn held up what he claimed was his father's head during a politically charged rant in which he claimed that he was the president of the United State that he posted on his YouTube channel.
Mohn said many saw him as the messiah, and wanted him as president, while urging relatives living with federal employees to murder them. He blamed the federal government for 'woke mobs' and migrants he claims are destroying the United States, and ranted against 'globalists and communists'.
The appalling 14 minute clip - which remained on YouTube for six hours after it was posted at 5:30pm, before being taken down - sees Mohn hold up his father's head in a bloodied plastic bag placed inside a silver, having declared: 'Violence is the only solution to the federal government's treason.'
He says: 'This is the head of Mike Mohn, a federal employee of over 20 years and my father. He is now in hell for eternity as a traitor to his country.'
DailyMail.com has been unable to confirm whether Mike Mohn was a federal employee. Retirement age for federal employees is typically 62 years old.

The special prosecutor in Donald Trump's election interference case in Georgia has settled his divorce, the day before he was due to be asked about the end of his marriage in court.
Nathan Wade filed for divorce from his wife of 26 years, Joycelyn, in November 2021 - the day after he was appointed by the district attorney, Fani Willis, to lead the Trump prosecution.
On January 8, allegations emerged that Wade was in a romantic relationship with Willis, and questions were asked about his hiring, his salary, and his lavishing of gifts on her.
Wade, 51, was due to be questioned in court on Wednesday about his relationship with Willis, amid accusations by the Trump team of impropriety - but on Tuesday he said his contentious divorce had been settled out of court, meaning neither he nor Willis will be interrogated in court about their relationship.
Willis still faces an attempt by the Trump team to remove her from the case, with a hearing scheduled for February 15.
