Late-night vote sends historic Mayorkas impeachment vote to House floor

ouse Homeland Security Committee Republicans approved two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas just after midnight Wednesday, sending the vote to the House floor.

 

Why it matters: If the historic vote succeeds, Mayorkas would be the first Cabinet member to be impeached since 1876.

Democrats stonewalled and insisted that Republicans had failed to provide evidence of the constitutional standard of high crimes and misdemeanors.

What they're saying: "Today is a grave day. We have not approached this day or this process lightly. Secretary Mayorkas's actions have forced our hand," Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) said in his opening statement.

 

Ranking Member Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said the "impeachment scheme is a dangerous attempt to distort the Constitution and the Secretary's record to cover up their inability and unwillingness to work with Democrats."

 

Zoom in: A slew of key voices and legal experts have spoken out against the impeachment effort.

 

Former President Trump's impeachment defender Alan Dershowitz published an op-ed Tuesday evening, arguing Mayorkas "has not committed bribery, treason, or high crimes and misdemeanors" and that most Republicans "are prepared to apply a double standard based on partisan considerations."

The Wall Street Editorial Board warned that "impeaching Mr. Mayorkas won't change enforcement policy and is a bad precedent that will open the gates to more cabinet impeachments by both parties."

 

Between the lines: During the impeachment push, House Republicans are also slamming Senate negotiations on a border deal that would be one of the most conservative border bills of the century.

 

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has indicated that the pending Senate border plan would be "dead on arrival" in the House.

If the House manages to pass articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, an impeachment trial will meet the same fate in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Christian Veteran Who Beheaded Satanic Altar in Iowa Capital Charged with Hate Crime

 

Christian veteran Michael Cassidy, who beheaded a satanic altar in the Iowa capital over the holidays, has been charged with a hate crime.

The altar to Baphomet was installed by the Satanic Temple, with approval from the Iowa Legislature. It featured a goat’s head on a red-caped mannequin holding a crimson pentagram wreath.

 

The display caused massive controversy, with some arguing that the approval of the shrine was crucial to religious freedom and others arguing that it was a deliberate move to torment Christians — especially as it was placed near a Nativity scene.

 

On December 14, Cassidy ripped the head off and threw it in a trashcan.

 

Cassidy was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, the next day.

Speaking to The Sentinel shortly after the beheading, Cassidy said he had beheaded the statue in order to “awaken Christians to the anti-Christian acts promoted by our government.”

 

“The world may tell Christians to submissively accept the legitimization of Satan, but none of the founders would have considered government sanction of Satanic altars inside Capitol buildings as protected by the First Amendment,” Cassidy said. “Anti-Christian values have steadily been mainstreamed more and more in recent decades, and Christians have largely acted like the proverbial frog in the boiling pot of water.”

Latest court filings pick up on previous claims that first son is target of politically motivated federal prosecutors.

Hunter Biden's defense team hit back Tuesday against federal prosecutors in his gun case, suggesting that they may benefit from attending Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

 

The latest filings pick up on previous claims that allege that President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, is the target of politically motivated federal prosecutors.

 

In one lengthy footnote, the defense said Hunter Biden's 2021 book: "Beautiful Things: A Memoir," was not a confession to using drugs while owning a firearm, but a cautionary tale designed to help Americans struggling with addiction. The defense also suggested prosecutors could benefit from attending AA and NA meetings.

 

"Perhaps the prosecution should visit an Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous meeting, where they will find that the sort of stories Mr. Biden recounts in his memoir are common. These stories are not told to gloat. Acknowledging the depraved actions that they have taken while in the throes of addiction and acknowledging responsibility for them is part of the healing process," defense attorney Abbe David Lowell wrote. "It shows others who are coming to terms with their addiction that they are not alone, that there are others who understand them, and that there is a path forward. Mr. Biden wrote his memoir as a cautionary tale to show that even a child born into great privilege can succumb to addiction and, perhaps more importantly, to show people that no matter how far you may have fallen, you can still pick yourself back up. Mr. Biden has been proudly sober four years now – a fact the prosecution conveniently omits when it revels in discussing the more salacious details of his history of drug use."

Anon hasn't taken the jab, but lived with relative who did.

So, this might be evidence of the jab? Or, anon's just making connections where there aren't.

So here goes; it's weird, but then, aren't we all.

Anon picked nose earlier; the piece dislodged from the nasal wall, but was still attached. Used thumb and forefinger to grip it, and while pulling knew there'd be blood, as there had been previous times; and, when it came out, held it and stared at it and took some pictures, then bagged it. (And fixed the nosebleed.)

It has a tail. It's almost like it was rooted. Anon knows about the hydra and antennae so curious if this is "normal."

Anon has experienced this several times in the past as well, not sure how far back that "past" goes; at least a couple years.

Maybe longer; anon did have one flu shot back in the 90s…

A Trump administration official is critically-ill after being shot during a carjacking in crime-ridden Washington DC, whose perpetrator then killed another victim.

 

The heavily liberal-leaning city has seen carjackings skyrocket of late, with 953 in 2023 alone, nearly nine times as many as there were in 2018.

 

Mike Gill, a married father of three, was blasted by the unnamed suspect on K Street NW around 5:45pm Monday. He was collecting his wife, an education lawyer, at the time of the incident and was inside the car when he was struck.

 

Gill managed to get out of his car, but collapsed shortly afterwards.

 

He served as chief operating officer of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during Donald Trump's time in the White House. .

A witness told the Washington Post that his wife 'ran toward her husband and grabbed his hand,' asking him what happened, but getting no response.

 

The victim was wearing 'a dress shirt and sweater, sprawled on the pavement with one foot still in the passenger’s side of a car. His right hand was twitching as blood pooled around his head,' Yolanda Douglas added.

 

A spokeswoman for Gill said: 'We can confirm that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block of K Street Northwest on Monday evening and is in critical condition.

 

'Out of respect for the family, we have nothing additional to add at this time.'

 

Gill's work in government dates back to at least 2016, when the city of Washington appointed him to represent the GOP on their Board of Elections.

 

He also served as the chief of staff to CFTC Chairman Christopher Giancarlo and was Chief Regulatory Reform Officer for the commission.

 

He served as a lawyer at a private firm and the vice president of a trade association prior to his government worked.

 

He was a deputy director of the 1992 Bush-Quayle re-election campaign and also worked for Republican members of the Senate and House, holding a top level security clearance.

The carjacker went on a spree that spanned both Washington DC and Maryland and left at least one man dead, in addition to Gill's injuries.

 

Over an hour after the shooting that involved Gill, he unsuccessfully tried to carjack someone in the 1000 block of Third Street NE at around 7:05 p.m.

 

Just ten minutes later, the suspect made a third unsuccessful attempt to carjack a vehicle on Third Street NE, before taking the car of a person he shot, in this case fatally.

 

Family members identified the victim as 35-year-old Alberto Vazquez, according to NBC Washington.

Justin Mohn, 32, is in custody Pennsylvania after his father Michael was found by his wife, beheaded, inside of the home that the trio shared in the quiet Philadelphia suburb of Levittown.

 

Early Wednesday, the suspect was charged with murder in the first degree, abuse of a corpse and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.

 

Hours before his arrest, Mohn held up what he claimed was his father's head during a politically charged rant in which he claimed that he was the president of the United State that he posted on his YouTube channel.

 

Mohn said many saw him as the messiah, and wanted him as president, while urging relatives living with federal employees to murder them. He blamed the federal government for 'woke mobs' and migrants he claims are destroying the United States, and ranted against 'globalists and communists'.

 

The appalling 14 minute clip - which remained on YouTube for six hours after it was posted at 5:30pm, before being taken down - sees Mohn hold up his father's head in a bloodied plastic bag placed inside a silver, having declared: 'Violence is the only solution to the federal government's treason.'

 

He says: 'This is the head of Mike Mohn, a federal employee of over 20 years and my father. He is now in hell for eternity as a traitor to his country.'

 

DailyMail.com has been unable to confirm whether Mike Mohn was a federal employee. Retirement age for federal employees is typically 62 years old.

Chris Christie dropping out of the Republican race, the centrist group let journalists know that the pugnacious pol might make a fine No Labels nominee (Christie's disdain for the project notwithstanding). As if to broaden the third-party lane for former blue-state Republican governors, Maryland's Larry Hogan then let slip that he had recently resigned from No Labels' board ("in a possible sign of a 2024 bid," noted the Associated Press headline); though on CNN Sunday Hogan played down his personal ambitions and endorsed former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for the GOP nomination.

 

On Friday, the Washington Examiner reported that the putative political party had assembled a list of 13 possible candidates (assumed to be mostly Republican, with a Democratic veep; all as yet unnamed), to be whittled down between now and sometime in March, if and when it looks like former President Donald Trump has sewn up the GOP nomination. "They believe they have a path to victory with the right unity ticket of a Democrat and Republican," a source told the Examiner after attending a No Labels strategy session last week in Florida, where a new associated super PAC was announced.

 

Fox News further reported on Monday that the leading figure among those presumed 13 candidates, Sen. Joe Manchin (D–W.Va.), recently told a private gathering in Connecticut that he would be meeting with President Joe Biden in a matter of days to try to "move him to the center" on issues like spending and regulation and personnel. "Manchin strongly suggested that [the meeting] will set the stage for a decision on his own 2024 presidential run," Fox reported, with D-Day coming as soon as Super Tuesday on March 5.

 

If inserted into the race, the new presidential kid on the block would have ballot access in at least 14 states, worth 123 electoral college votes: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah. Signature gatherers have another 14 states in their sights between now and November, though the major parties are throwing up their usual obstacles.

 

The 2024 environment thus far has looked unusually promising for third parties and independents. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., since dropping out of the Democratic primary (in which he was polling higher than any incumbent-challenger since Pat Buchanan in 1992), has consistently drawn around 15 percent support in a three-way matchup between Biden and Trump, both of whom have been at around 37–38 percent. RFK Jr. is the only major figure in the presidential race with net favorable ratings, per a Gallup poll released last week. (Kennedy is only now starting to obtain ballot access, beginning in Utah.)

 

For the entirety of the campaign, a solid majority of Americans have been dissatisfied with the Trump-Biden choice, which is basically No Labels' current theory of the case. Both Biden (at 38 percent) and Trump (41 percent) are underwater with independents, the swing voters in most 21st century presidential elections. A Gallup synthesis of its 2023 polls released last Friday showed that 43 percent of Americans last year politically self-identified as independents, tying the all-time record of 2014.

 

And we are no longer just talking about Republican-leaning or Democrat-leaning independents, blocs whose voting habits have been relatively predictable over time. The number of measurably independent independents has grown by 46 percent nationwide since October 2008, from 24.5 million to 35.3 million, nearly edging out the total of registered Republicans (35.7 million, as of October 2023, compared to 45.9 million Democrats). In 2004, among the 30+ states that track partisan registration, Democrats and Republicans combined for a 75 percent market share; now that's down to 68 percent. (Registered Libertarians, meanwhile, have tripled since 2008, up to 742,000.)

A U.S. government report in December found that hackers linked to Russia and China targeted some election systems during the 2022 midterms, but found no evidence that foreign governments compromised the vote.

 

The New York Times reported in December that China has begun experimenting with artificial intelligence in its influence campaigns. New technologies make it easier for foreign countries to mimic native English speakers and generate messages amplifying existing divisions more rapidly, according to the Times.

 

Traditionally, Russia has been more aggressive in trying to influence U.S. elections than China, according to U.S. intelligence officials.

 

However, since 2020 senior Chinese officials have issued broad directives to operatives to "intensify efforts to influence US policy and public opinion in China's favor," and senior Chinese officials have aimed to "magnify U.S. societal divisions," according to a U.S. intelligence assessment declassified in December.

 

A senior National Security Agency official last week told reporters that the agency had not seen signs of any notable new foreign influence operations aimed at the 2024 election.

 

Still, officials are preparing for the possibility that Russia, Iran, China, and other foreign actors will attempt to affect voters.

 

"Between expanding geopolitical turmoil and the chaotic domestic political environment, there will be plenty of motivations and opportunities for a wide range of threat actors to interfere in this year's election," Chris Krebs, who led the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's work to protect elections from foreign interference in 2020, told CNN.

 

"Throw in AI-powered influence campaigns and 2024 might be unlike any prior election."

What I learned is written in three books, particularly American Muckraker, and filmed masterclasses, released and unreleased.

 

I’ve received love from a balanced family with honest parents and sincere grandparents who raised me to have a manically driven work ethic, all while believing in the best in people. From my vantage point, that last thing is on the verge of extinction unless things fundamentally change.

 

I built a good organization from nothing, which did good things. I’m taking lessons from the first company and building a better one from nothing, which I know will do more extraordinary things.

 

Challenging Leviathan itself is hard enough.

 

Leviathan doesn’t like being challenged. But as nearly impossible as that is, the enemy and its injustice is no longer what bothers me. An enemy can’t betray you. Only people you think are good can do that.

 

It has been an indescribable hell on earth for me to witness people go against everything they claim to believe in - everything good and right, in service to their love of money and power. I’ve witnessed envy destroy people whose hearts I thought I knew. I’ve seen an unhealthy obsession with comfort and safety from countless others. These weaknesses stand between us and what we’re “up against.”

I’m not suicidal, but I’m also not afraid to die.

 

Now, I’m indifferent to the outcome and frankly numb to the consequences of truth-telling. I’ve adapted to faith over fear.

 

The mission is to discover other people whose principles are not for sale — who will do the right thing rather than talk about doing the right thing. I’m tired of seeing 10s of thousands of people sliding into my DMs complaining to my team about how bad things are… and then they make excuses or do nothing.

The head of the Russian Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, stated in an interview for RIA Novosti yesterday that the BRICS states have overtaken the G7 in terms of share in global GDP in PPP terms.

 

As new members have joined, the group’s share in global output rose from 31% to 35% as of the end of 2023, he added. This is based on the GDP in terms of the PPP (purchasing power parity) metric. The latter compares economic productivity and standards of living between countries by checking the differences in the cost of goods and services.

 

Nabiullina stressed that BRICS's role now is very vital, stating, “BRICS economies are developing quite quickly."

 

Last year, the economic bloc accepted the joining of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates as new members. Its older members are Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, noting that they encourage others to join the bloc.

 

Argentina officially accepted the invitation and was supposed to join on January 1 of this year, however, the country's new President Javier Milei reversed the decision heading toward the West instead.

 

BRICS is expected to lead more than 40% of global crude oil production, while its population will amount to nearly 3.6 billion – almost half of the world’s total due to the joining of its new members.

 

Many other states have shown interest in joining BRICS, while some have even already formally submitted applications. The latter includes Venezuela, Thailand, Senegal, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Bahrain, and Pakistan.

 

The IMF reported that the G7’s share in global GDP in terms of PPP has been on a steady decline over the past several years, dropping from 50.42% in 1982 to 30.39% in 2022. It expects the figure to drop lower to 29.44% this year.

According to Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the BRICS expansion will strengthen the group, and the topic will be covered at the forthcoming summit in South Africa.

 

"We believe that in one form or another, the expansion of the BRICS will contribute to the further development and strengthening of this organization. The form, the extent [of the expansion] - this is exactly what we will discuss during the upcoming summit," Peskov told reporters on August 3, 2023.

 

"This is a matter [the enlargement of BRICS] of discussion, we do not think that we need to get ahead of ourselves and declare our position before a discussion between the BRICS member states. In any case, we are talking about countries with which we have quite constructive interaction in various fields," he said.

 

Although the introduction of a single BRICS currency is now unachievable, Peskov stated that does not imply the topic should not be addressed.

 

"It is hardly possible to implement, but this does not mean that it does not need to be discussed. Discussions on this matter, of course, will continue," he told reporters.

FBI director to warn Congress of dangers Chinese hackers pose to American infrastructure, innovation

Washington — Hackers backed by the Chinese government are targeting U.S. water treatment plants and electrical grids, strategically positioning themselves within critical infrastructure systems to "wreak havoc and cause real-world harm to American citizens and communities," FBI Director Christopher Wray is expected to tell Congress Wednesday.

 

"There has been far too little public focus on the fact that PRC hackers are targeting our critical infrastructure," Wray will warn the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, according to excerpts of his remarks obtained by CBS News. "The risk that poses to every American requires our attention — now."

 

The head of the FBI and other national security officials — including Jen Easterly, who leads the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency — are scheduled to testify at a congressional hearing focused on the cybersecurity threat posed by China's government.

 

Wray is expected to tell Congress that much of the framework upon which Americans rely for daily tasks, like oil and natural gas pipelines and transportation systems, is vulnerable to a cyberattack supported by China's ruling party.

 

Last May, Microsoft security researchers unearthed a hacking operation, code-named "Volt Typhoon." Active since mid-2021, researchers determined it "could disrupt critical communications infrastructure between the United States and Asia region during future crises."

 

Cyber experts say Volt Typhoon utilizes botnets – networks of infected internet-connected devices that can be used to bring down sensitive targets. Typically, initial access is gained through unsecured routers or modems.

 

Activity by the China-based hacking group reportedly alarmed U.S. officials, given its proximity to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. China has ramped up its military activities near the island in recent years in response to what Beijing claims is "collusion" between Taiwan and the U.S.

 

The naval port in Guam would play a critically important role in launching any U.S. military response in the event of a Taiwanese invasion. Microsoft noted at the time that Chinese intelligence and military hackers routinely prioritize espionage and the gathering of information.

 

On Tuesday, Reuters reported that the Justice Department and FBI targeted the hackers behind Volt Typhoon and received court authorization to remotely disable aspects of the hacking campaign. Remotely disabling hackers behind cyberattacks is a new weapon in the U.S. government's cyber defense arsenal.

 

Earlier this month, the FBI and CISA also pushed out a new alert, warning that Chinese-manufactured drones, or UAS, pose a "significant risk" to critical infrastructure and U.S. national security.

 

"The use of Chinese-manufactured UAS in critical infrastructure operations risks exposing sensitive information to PRC authorities, jeopardizing U.S. national security, economic security, and public health and safety," the bulletin read.

 

Other top public officials, like Attorney General Merrick Garland, have also warned of the threat China's government poses to Americans' well being, economic prosperity and innovation. In the last year, the Justice Department has announced novel cases calling out Chinese chemical companies for aiding the fentanyl epidemic and secret Chinese police stations working to quiet Chinese dissidents living in the U.S.

 

"Today, and literally every day, they're actively attacking our economic security, engaging in wholesale theft of our innovation, and our personal and corporate data," Wray is expected to tell Congress Wednesday. "They target our freedoms, reaching inside our borders, across America, to silence, coerce, and threaten our citizens and residents."

 

Last year, the Justice Department launched the Disruptive Technology Strike Force to target rival nations like China that seek to use American high-tech advances to undermine national security and upset the rule of law.

 

U.S. officials are paying more attention to how foreign adversaries try to use investments to gain access to American technology and data. In announcing the department's new initiative last February, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said the Biden administration is looking at options to enable federal regulators to monitor the flow of American money into foreign tech sectors, while making sure those funds do not advance the national security interests of other nations, including China.

The Great Raid of 1840 was the largest raid ever mounted by Native Americans on white cities in what is now the United States. It followed the Council House Fight, in which Republic of Texas officials attempted to capture and take prisoner 33 Comanche chiefs who had come to negotiate a peace treaty, killing them together with two dozen of their family and followers. The Comanche tribe was supposed to have brought white hostages as their part of the negotiations but brought only one young woman (the 16-year-old Matilda Lockhart). Arguments and fighting then broke out among the Texans and Comanches. The Texas Officials were determined to force the Comanche to release all white captives among them. To avenge what the Comanche viewed as a bitter betrayal by the Texans, the Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump raised a huge war party of many of the bands of the Comanche, and raided deep into white-settled areas of Southeast Texas.
