Put nuclear weapons in Cuba – Russian MP

Aleksey Zhuravlev has suggested that Moscow should deploy missiles in “friendly” countries

 

Russia should place its nuclear weapons in “friendly countries” near the US in response toWashington’s alleged plans to move its own tactical arms to Europe, lawmaker Aleksey Zhuravlev has suggested.

 

His comments came after The Telegraph reported on Saturday that the US is looking to deploy its nuclear weapons in the UK for the first time in 15 years, in order to counter a supposedly increased threat from Russia.

 

In a post on Telegram, Zhuravlev, who is first deputy chairman of the Russian parliamentary defense committee and leader of the Rodina (Motherland) party, pointed out that Britain has its own nuclear weapons, and that the US has already deployed part of its atomic arsenal to several European countries close to Russia.

 

“Therefore, it’s unlikely that additional deployment [of nuclear weapons to the UK] would have an effect on the military-political landscape,” Zhuravlev surmised.

 

Nevertheless, the politician suggested that Moscow should consider deploying its own nuclear weapons closer to the US and send them to “friendly countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.”

 

Zhuravlev admitted, however, that weapons systems have made a big leap in the years since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. “Russian hypersonic missiles launched from our territory would reach the US faster than subsonic ones launched from the American underbelly,” the MP wrote. (Is he saying South America or just Cuba?)

 

He also pointed out that Russia has strategic aviation as well as a vast arsenal of submarines stationed in unknown locations around the world’s oceans.

 

“We have ways to respond to any encroachments by the US and NATO, which it controls,” Zhuravlev said.

 

The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously warned thatMoscow would be forced to enact “compensatory countermeasures”in the event that American nuclear warheads return to Britain. Russia has also repeatedly accused the West of fueling tensions in Europe, and has cited NATO’s continued eastward expansion as one of the root causes of the Ukraine conflict.

 

Meanwhile, a number of Western officials – including from the UK, Germany, Estonia, and even the chair of NATO’s Military Committee – have stoked fears of a supposed Russian attack on Europe in the next few years, and have called on Western governments and citizens to prepare for a major conflict with Moscow.

 

Russia, however, has vehemently denied any plans to invade neighboring European countries, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calling such claims a “hoax.” Russian President VladimirPutin has also stressed that Moscow “has no interest… geopolitically, economically or militarily… in waging war against NATO”and would instead prefer to improve ties with the US-led bloc.

The soldiers killed in a drone strike on a US base in Jordan on Saturday have been identified

 

Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, and Sgt. William Rivers, 46, were killed in the attack

 

The suicide drone strike impacted a base known as Tower 22 near the Syria border and resulted in at least 34 other injuries

 

The American soldiers killed in suicide drone strike on a US base in Jordan have been identified as Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, and Sgt. William Rivers, 46.

 

The drone attack late Saturday impacted a base in the northeast part of the country known as Tower 22 near the Syria border, and resulted in three deaths and at least 34 other injuries.

 

''Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said all three soldiers were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a US Army Reserve unit based out of Fort Moore, Georgia.''

 

'What was different about this attack is where it landed. It did impact where the living quarters, and I believe it was pretty early morning so people were actually in their beds when the drone impacted,' Singh said at a press conference today.

Zelensky (lies as much as Bidan) claims huge increase in size of Kiev’s forces

The Ukrainian president has said that his army now numbers nearly 900,000 soldiers

 

There are currently 880,000 people serving in Ukraine’s armed forces, according to President Vladimir Zelensky, who insisted that Kiev wants to mobilize even more troops, primarily males who left the country after the start of the conflict with Russia.

 

Just last month, Zelensky claimed that Kiev’s ground forces numbered over 600,000 service personnel, while in February 2022, when Russia launched its offensive, the Ukrainian army officially had only about 260,000 servicemen.

 

In an interview with the German public channel ARD news broadcast on Monday, the Ukrainian leader stated that Kiev now has “a million-strong army,” adding that there are also over 30 million people who are working in the country right now, one million of whom are employed in the defense and security sectors. (NO ONE would ever believe that.)

 

At the same time, Zelensky noted that between 6.5 million and 7.5 million people had left Ukraine since the start of the conflict and stated that Kiev wants to repatriate citizens who are eligible for military service.

 

His comments come as the country's armed forces continue to experience dire personnel shortages on the battlefield, as has been admitted by a number of top Ukrainian military officers and commanders, including the head of the country’s armed forces, General Valery Zaluzhny.

 

While Kiev doesn’t publish its casualty figures, Russia’s Defense Ministry has estimated that Ukraine’s forces have lost as many as 160,000 service personnel since the launch of their failed summer counteroffensive, and that, over the course of the conflict, nearly 400,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed or wounded.

 

Meanwhile, multiple media reports have also suggested that the quality of Kiev’s soldiers has also diminished. Earlier this month, the commander of Kiev’s 5th Assault Brigade, Aleksey Tarasenko, told Espresso TV that the average age of soldiers in the Ukrainian army is now over 40 years and that “young men” were desperately needed.

 

The US outlet Daily Beast also reported last week, citing interviews with Ukrainian men who have been avoiding mobilization, that Kiev was now sending untrained conscripts to the frontline shortly after drafting them from the streets, with many of them failing to last even a few days on the battlefield.

 

In light of these personnel shortages, late last year Kiev intensified its mobilization efforts, with Zelensky stating at the time that the military was looking to call up an additional 500,000 new recruits. One Ukrainian official even proposed mobilizing the country’s entire population.

 

Ukrainian lawmakers, in turn, have been debating proposals to amend the country’s mobilization laws to lower the draft age, to recruit more women and to penalize draft-dodgers by cutting off their bank accounts.

Biden’s Justice Department on Monday served the House Sergeant at Arms a grand jury subpoena for documents.

 

“House of Representatives Sergeant at Arms William McFarland announced his office was served a grand jury subpoena by the Justice Department, sparking a wave of theories on social media Monday afternoon,” Newsweek reported.

 

“McFarland formally notified House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, of a subpoena on Monday,” according to Newsweek.

 

It is unclear what the subpoenaed documents are related to or what the grand jury is investigating.

 

“This is to notify you formally pursuant to rule 8 of the rules of the House of Representatives that the office of the sergeant at arms for the House of Representatives has been served with a grand jury subpoena for documents issued by the U.S. Department of Justice,” House Reading Clerk Susan Cole said on Monday.

 

Some speculated the grand jury subpoena is related to the January 6 Capitol protest.

 

“I am hearing other potential reasons for this but Rep. Loudermilk did say his committee wanted to interview Paul Irving, Pelosi’s sergeant at arms on Jan 6 who resigned the next day. (The committee has not yet interviewed him)” investigative reporter Julie Kelly said.

INSANE: The US Relies on China and Russia for Its Ammunition Supply

The US military is almost entirely dependent upon China and Russia for a metal used in many military applications, such as explosives and armor-piercing bullets. The metal is antimony, and China currently owns 53 percent of the world's supply. However, it processes over 80 percent of antimony ore through contracts with other producers. The US's last source of antimony, the Stibnite mine in Idaho, ceased operations in 1997.

 

It isn't just the military that relies on antimony, though it does appear insane to import the key element in manufacturing modern military munitions from your most likely adversary; the private sector is also heavily reliant on the metal.

 

For example, consider its usage in the high-tech sector, where it is a key ingredient in semi-conductors, circuit boards, electric switches, fluorescent lighting, high quality clear glass and lithium-ion batteries. No antimony, no iPhones. No hi-definition TVs. No modern kitchen appliances, all of which make use of digital circuitry. Oh, and that car you’re thinking about buying? Sorry.

 

Now, consider this: There can be no “energy transition” without adequate supplies of antimony. That thick, heavy glass used in solar panels? It’s made with antimony. Those 300 to 700 foot-tall windmills that sporadically produce electricity? Made with antimony. Antimony is a key element in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, as mentioned above, but even more crucial is the fact that it is integral to the development of the next-generation liquid metal batteries that, as Ecclestone pointed out during the webinar, hold the key to truly scalable energy storage for wind and solar power.

 

This issue has hit the front burner of Capitol Hill. The House Armed Services Committee is investigating the status of the Defense National Stockpile, which is charged with maintaining a strategic reserve of rare minerals. Our stockpile and the infrastructure to operate it will largely cease to exist by 2025 unless urgent action is taken.

 

Crap like this simply validates the idea that we are ruled by fools and buffoons. Congress has nearly sold off the stockpile, according to Defense News, " over the past several decades to fund other programs."

 

The stockpile was valued at nearly $42 billion in today’s dollars at its peak during the beginning of the Cold War in 1952. That value has plummeted to $888 million as of last year following decades of congressionally authorized sell-offs to private sector customers. Lawmakers anticipate the stockpile will become insolvent by FY25.

 

“A lot of what happened is Congress just getting greedy and finding politically convenient ways to fund programs that they weren’t willing to raise revenue for,” said [Massachusetts Democrat Seth] Moulton.

 

These sell-offs have included 3,000 short tons of titanium, used in building military airframes, and 76 million pounds of tungsten ores and concentrates, used in military turbine engines and armor-piercing ammunition. They have also included more than 2 million pounds of tantalum, used in electronics, as well as 26 million pounds of cobalt and 62,881 short tons of aluminum.

 

Time and again, we run into situations where it is obvious that national security is not a priority of Congress or the Defense Department. We've "offshored" most of our semiconductor industry. We've placed a, in my view, stupid and short-sighted emphasis on electric vehicles when we depend on China for the raw materials.

 

Somehow, if a war breaks out over Taiwan, I don't think the Chinese will be selling up the material we need to make ammunition.

Fiji hit by sex scandal as Australia's eSafety Commissioner orders removal of 'intimate images'

 

When Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka took office more than a year ago, dealing with a sex scandal involving two of his ministers would have been at the very bottom of a list of potential threats to his government.

 

But for the past week in Fiji, it's all people are talking about — and depending on who you talk to, some say it has become so serious that Mr Rabuka's hold on power is on a knife's edge.

 

Add in the fact it's a scandal involving Mr Rabuka's education minister and former son-in-law, a fellow minister and former beauty queen, leaked text messages — that the accused say are "fake" — and "intimate photos", and you have the type of plot usually reserved for make-believe political dramas.

 

"This story has got the potential to rock [Fiji's] coalition government," former Fiji resident and Victoria University of Wellington comparative politics Professor Jon Fraenke told the ABC.

 

"Some individuals have been shocked and horrified by this story.

 

"But for me, I do think [these] kinds of things are best kept out of politics."

 

Affair 'fake news'

An island nation of just under 1 million, Fiji is deeply religious with entrenched socially conservative family values. Yet its recent history is also shrouded by military-backed coups.

 

After 16 years under the draconian reign of coup-leader Frank Bainimarama, Mr Rabuka came to power in late 2022 through a democratic vote.

 

Some believed it would be the start of a new dawn for the country as it moved away from autocratic rule and the army's overt influence in the country's politics.

 

But Mr Rabuka, a former coup leader himself, was forced to piece together a rag-tag coalition of three parties with often conflicting social and political ideals.

 

And these differing views have been on full-display over the past week as the scandal engulfed the island nation's political debate.

 

The incident itself dates back to August.

 

It is alleged that during a parliamentary study trip to Melbourne sponsored by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs, Fiji's then-education minister, Aseri Radrodro, a married man, had an affair with the country's Minister for Women and Children and former beauty queen Lynda Tabuya.

 

Ms Tabuya has denied the allegations, labelling them "fake news".

 

But late last week the scandal crossed borders.

 

On Friday Australia's eSafety Commissioner became involved, ordering the Australian-hosted website Grubsheet Feejee to remove intimate pictures allegedly taken of Ms Tabuya during the alleged tryst.

 

Ms Tabuya last week told local Fiji media that the texts and inappropriate images circulating on social media were fabricated. She said she has filed a complaint with the Fiji Police who she says have been helping her remove the images from online sources.

 

The ABC has contacted both Ms Tabuya and Mr Radrodro for comment.

 

But there's more.

 

Last week Mr Rabuka removed Mr Radrodro from his cabinet, accusing him of insubordination for firing board members of Fiji's National University without his knowledge.

Turkish president Tayyip Recep Erdogan has called for the masked suspects to be found within 24 hours

 

Two masked gunmen shot and killed a person during a mass service at a Catholic church in Istanbul on Sunday, Turkish officials have confirmed. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Sunday’s attack at the Italian Santa Maria Catholic Church in the Sariyer district in the northeastern section of Istanbul’s European side, occurred just before noon local time.

 

Yerlikaya added that theperson shot dead appeared to have been deliberately targetedby the killers, whose identities were concealed by masks. “A comprehensive investigation was launched on the matter and work has been started to capture the attackers,” Yerlikaya wrote on social media on Sunday.

 

Istanbul governor Davut Gul said that the victim was a Turkish national and that there were no other injuries related to the incident, according to Reuters.

Turkish president Tayyip Recep Erdogan expressed his sorrow at the incident in calls to the church’s priest, a local official from his ruling AK Party and Poland’s consul general in Istanbul, the news agency added.

 

Erdogan said that the assassins would be found “within 24 hours” and that the “necessary steps” were being taken to locate the suspects.

 

Pope Francis also offered condolences after his weekly Angelus prayer from the Vatican on Sunday. “I express my closeness to the community of Saint Mary Draperis Church in Istanbul that suffered an armed attack during mass that caused one death,” the Pontiff said, referring to the chapel by its English title.

 

CCTV obtained by Turkish media shows the attack in graphic detail. Two gunmen enter the church, apparently following a man dressed in black before he is shot and fatally injured, the footage shows. Afterwards, the two assailants calmly leave the church.

 

The uncle of the victim, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed, said thatthe 52-year-old was intending to become a Christian but had not yet been baptized. Türkiye is a predominantly Muslim country – with just 0.2% of the population estimated to be Christian or from other recognized religions like Judaism. A new report says the Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet that lost part of its fuselage in midair was faulty when it left the factory.

 

On Jan. 5, a portion of an Alaska Airlines aircraft’s fuselage blew out three miles above Oregon.

 

The depressurized plane, which was carrying 171 passengers and six crew members, returned safely to Portland International Airport with no serious injuries.

 

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources it did not name, reported Monday that bolts that should have been holding the piece in place were missing when the jet left the factory.

 

The report said airplane industry sources, including those at Boeing, believe workers did not put back the bolts after reinstalling a plug door, which had been opened or removed during production.

Prosecutors Say Founder Of Haitian Orphanage Sexually Abused 4 Boys

A prosecutor said Friday that a Haitian orphanage’s American founder forced four boys to engage in sexual acts more than a decade ago.

 

NBC News reports,

 

Michael Geilenfeld, 71, is a “dangerous, manipulative and cunning child sexual predator” who for decades has preyed on poor children while working abroad as a missionary, Jessica Urban, a prosecutor with the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, said during a detention hearing in Denver federal court.

 

Her statements marked the first time authorities have disclosed details of the investigation that led to Geilenfeld’s Jan. 18 indictment in Florida on charges of child sexual abuse. Urban, speaking via a video feed, offered the evidence to support her argument that Geilenfeld should not be released on bond as his case proceeds. She said authorities fear he or his supporters will try to intimidate victims to prevent them from testifying against him.

 

The abuse took place between November 2006 and December 2010, according to the indictment, a time period when Geilenfeld was operating the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys orphanage. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

 

According to the Florida indictment, Geilenfeld traveled to Haiti to engage in illicit sexual conduct with another person under the age of 18.

 

Authorities in Haiti have long investigated sex abuse allegations against Geilenfeld and arrested him in September 2014 based on allegations made against him by a child advocate in Maine, Paul Kendrick. Kendrick accused Geilenfeld of being a serial pedophile after speaking to young men who claimed they were abused by Geilenfeld when they were boys in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital where he founded the orphanage in 1985.

 

Geilenfeld called the claims “vicious, vile lies,” and his case was dismissed in 2015 after he spent 237 days in prison in Haiti. At some point, Geilenfeld and a charity associated with the orphanage, Hearts for Haiti, sued Kendrick in federal court in Maine. The suit blamed Kendrick for Geilenfeld’s imprisonment, damage to his reputation and the loss of millions of dollars in donations.

 

Hearts with Haiti received $3 million from Kendrick’s insurance companies in 2019, but Geilenfeld did not receive a payment.

 

Liberal Americans and Haitian orphanages don’t seem to have a great track record.

Aleksey Zhuravlev has suggested that Moscow should deploy missiles in “friendly” countries

 

Russia should place its nuclear weapons in “friendly countries” near the US in response to Washington’s alleged plans to move its own tactical arms to Europe, lawmaker Aleksey Zhuravlev has suggested.

 

His comments came after The Telegraph reported on Saturday that the US is looking to deploy its nuclear weapons in the UK for the first time in 15 years, in order to counter a supposedly increased threat from Russia.

 

In a post on Telegram, Zhuravlev, who is first deputy chairman of the Russian parliamentary defense committee and leader of the Rodina (Motherland) party, pointed out that Britain has its own nuclear weapons, and that the US has already deployed part of its atomic arsenal to several European countries close to Russia.

 

“Therefore, it’s unlikely that additional deployment [of nuclear weapons to the UK] would have an effect on the military-political landscape,” Zhuravlev surmised.

 

Nevertheless, the politician suggested that Moscow should consider deploying its own nuclear weapons closer to the US and send them to “friendly countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.”

 

Zhuravlev admitted, however, that weapons systems have made a big leap in the years since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. “Russian hypersonic missiles launched from our territory would reach the US faster than subsonic ones launched from the American underbelly,” the MP wrote.

 

He also pointed out that Russia has strategic aviation as well as a vast arsenal of submarines stationed in unknown locations around the world’s oceans.

 

“We have ways to respond to any encroachments by the US and NATO, which it controls,” Zhuravlev said.

The world-famous Hagia Sophia museum in Istanbul -originally founded as a cathedral - has been turned back into a mosque.

 

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the decision after a court annulled the site's museum status.

 

Built 1,500 years ago as an Orthodox Christian cathedral, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453. In 1934 it became a museum and is now a Unesco World Heritage site.

 

Islamists in Turkey long called for it to be converted to a mosque but secular opposition members opposed the move. The proposal prompted criticism from religious and political leaders worldwide. Defending the decision, President Erdogan stressed that the country had exercised its sovereign right in converting it back to a mosque.

 

He told a press conference the first Muslim prayers would be held inside the building on 24 July. "Like all our mosques, the doors of Hagia Sophia will be wide open to locals and foreigners, Muslims and non-Muslims," he added.

 

A change is coming to Hagia Sophia, which has endured since the 6th century, outlasting the Byzantine empire and the Ottoman era. Now, once again, it will be a mosque. But Turkish officials say Christian emblems, including mosaics of the Virgin Mary which adorn its soaring golden dome, will not be removed.

Making changes at Hagia Sophia is profoundly symbolic. It was Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, who decreed that it should be a museum.

 

President Erdogan is now taking one more step to dismantle Ataturk's secular legacy, and remould Turkey according to his vision.The Turkish leader - who presents himself as a modern day conqueror- is making no apologies for the change. He says anyone who doesn't like it - and plenty abroad don't - is attacking Turkey's sovereignty.

 

Reclaiming Hagia Sophia plays well with his base - religious conservatives - and with Turkish nationalists. Critics say he's using the issue to distract attention from the economic damage done here by the Covid19 pandemic.But many in the international community argue that the monument belongs to humanity - not to Turkey- and should have remained unchanged. They say it was a bridge between two faiths, and a symbol of co-existence.

 

Shortly after the announcement, the first call to prayer was recited at Hagia Sophia and was broadcast on all of Turkey's main news channels. The cultural site's social media channels have now been taken down.

 

What has the reaction been?

• Unesco has said it "deeply regrets" the decision to turn the museum into a mosque and called on the Turkish authorities to "open a dialogue without delay."

Lendlease whistleblower and lawyer Tony Watson – the law is failing to protect whistleblowers

 

Recently, the Human Rights Law Centre reviewed every whistleblower case to go to judgment in Australia. They found no successful judgment in favour of a whistleblower under our public or private whistleblower regimes.

 

Last year was not a good year for whistleblowers in Australia.

 

In March, the South Australian District Court ruled that whistleblower protections for making public interest disclosures do not extend to conduct preceding the making of the disclosure. In gathering evidence, Richard Boyle allegedly taped private conversations and photographed taxpayer information.

 

In August, the Full Federal Court ruled that I am not entitled to protection under Australia’s current whistleblower laws, which commenced on 1 July 2019, even though I made protected disclosures after the law commenced and started my case in April 2022.

 

And in November, David McBride pleaded guilty in the ACT Supreme Court to stealing and disclosing Commonwealth property after his public interest defence was ruled unavailable. McBride had leaked information to journalists highlighting the intensive investigation of soldiers in combat.

 

This inaccessibility of whistleblower protections continues a regrettable trend in Australia, but it should not be so.

 

Importance of whistleblower role

It is in everybody’s interest that we protect those who call out wrongdoing. Professor AJ Brown, Professor of Public Law and Policy at Griffith University and a Board member of Transparency International, appeared before the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Ethics and Professional Accountability on October 6th, 2023. Professor Brown said:

 

“Since I last appeared before this committee in 2017, we have certainly completed a lot more research which confirms that whistleblowing is the single most important and significant way in which wrongdoing comes to light…It does not matter which industry or which sector of the economy, or which institutions, we are talking about.”

 

We know that the best defence, and the best deterrent, against wrongdoing of all types is the whistleblower. Unsurprisingly then, our current whistleblower laws were introduced in 2019 amid much fanfare. Scores of politicians spoke of the importance of whistleblowing, and the strength and efficacy of today’s laws.

 

So what has gone wrong? Either the courts are failing to interpret the legislation properly, or, if the courts’ constructions are fine, it must be that something has gone wrong with the drafting.

 

Australia’s courts have emphasised that protective and beneficial legislation (like whistleblower laws) should be construed liberally, having regard to its underlying objectives. So, as far as possible,

 

protection of whistleblowers should be found and provided, rather than undiscovered and denied, given the mischief and the remedy at which the legislation is directed.

 

Following my loss in the Federal Court as to whether I am protected by today’s Whistleblower Laws, the Federal Court eviscerated my statutory claims against Lendlease and PwC, so that my sole remaining statutory claim is in s1317AD of the Corporations Act as it existed at 30 June 2019.

 

My issue is that s1317AD, as it stood on 30 June 2019, was repealed on 1 July 2019. In other words, the Federal Court has reversed the repeal legislated by the Government.

A fight over a holy patch of ground in the center of the Old City of Jerusalem has triggered violence, political chaos, and religious strife. And now, despite a fragile truce, the situation still threatens to spiral further out of control.

 

The dispute began July 14 when a pair of Israeli police officers were shot and killed near the al-Aqsa Mosque, in the area known as the Temple Mount or Haram al-Sharif, one of the holiest places in the world for both Muslims and Jews. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu temporarily shut down all access to the site and installed metal detectors that anyone hoping to pray there would need to pass through. (Only Muslims are permitted to pray on the Temple Mount, by law, though non-Muslims may visit.)

 

The problem is that Israel made the moves without consulting the Muslim authorities who control access to the site, sparking protests and deadly violence across the region. The Waqf, the Muslim custodians of the site, called for Muslims to pray outside of the metal detectors — and essentially boycott prayer on the Temple Mount — until the dispute was resolved.

 

On Monday, late in the evening Jerusalem time, Netanyahu’s government finally agreed to remove the metal detectors and find a different type of security measure.

 

It may have been too late, with the fight over access to the Temple Mount now spreading to both Jordan and Turkey, two of Israel’s closest allies in the Muslim world. The latest blow came Tuesday,when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel of trying to take control of the Temple Mount and upend the status quo.

 

“Everyone who knows Israel is aware that restrictions on al-Aqsa mosque are not due to safety concerns,” he said, speaking to parliamentarians in Ankara.Erdogan added a call for all Muslims to head to Jerusalem. “Come, let’s all protect Jerusalem,” he also said.

 

The Muslim custodians of the site also expressed dismay at the Israeli government’s compromise proposal of a separate but still technological security measure. They called for Muslims to continue to boycott the site until they had a chance to assess the new recommendations.

 

Netanyahu’s metal detectors, in other words, had touched the third rail of Israeli politics: the very fragile 50-year-old status quo agreement that gives authorities from each of the world’s three monotheistic religions control over Jerusalem’s holy spaces. Here’s how we got so close to the precipice, and why the situation is still not entirely under control.

 

Violence triggered more violence. Then things got even worse.

Anger swept the Muslim world after Israel installed the metal detectors, with protests extending all the way to Ankara and Amman.

 

In East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the tensions turned into actual bloodshed. On Friday, three Palestinians, including two teenagers, were reported shot dead during massive protests. At least 200 more were wounded across the region.

 

Also on Friday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced he was breaking off all diplomatic relations with Israel — including crucial conversations on security coordination — in protest over the new security measures on the Temple Mount.

 

The violence soon spread to neighboring Jordan, where on Sunday a handyman attacked an Israeli security guard at a residence on the Israeli embassy compound in the capital of Amman. The guard shot and killed both his would-be assailant and a bystander.

 

While it wasn’t immediately clear if the attacker acted because of the Temple Mount controversy, the incident came in the wake of widespread protests in Amman over the crisis.

 

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, it wasn’t clear if the Jordanians would let the guard out of the country. Israel, for its part, refused to turn over the guard, claiming diplomatic immunity.

 

By Monday morning, diplomats were zigzagging their way across the Middle East, trying to find a way to defuse the escalating tensions. Jason Greenblatt, the Trump administration’s special envoy for the Middle East, arrived in Israel Monday morning and was set to also visit Amman. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Another high-flying object has been seen hovering over the Grand Strand.

 

WMBF News started receiving questions about a circular object flying high above Myrtle Beach on Monday afternoon.

 

According to FlightRadar24, a real-time flight tracker that shows air traffic, it’s a high-altitude balloon that launched from Sante Fe, New Mexico.

 

The route shows the balloon has flown over Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.

 

FlightRadar24 shows the high-altitude balloon is going about 35 knots and has a barometric altitude of 57,400 feet.

 

The registration number for the high-altitude balloon shows that it’s operating as “Project Loon 673,” according to FlightAware.

 

According to an NBC News report, Project Loon is part of a Google project to deliver online access in regions where most people live offline.

 

It’s not clear where the balloon is headed and where it will land.

 

This comes nearly a year after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean along the Myrtle Beach coast.

More than 17,000 legal violations were committed by foreign nationals in the country in 2023, according to police data

 

The influx of Ukrainian refugees to Poland since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev has had a negative impact on crime in the country, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper has reported, citing data it received from the police.

 

Atotal of 17,278 violations of the law were committed by foreigners in Poland last year, 2,400 more than in 2022, the paper said in an article entitled “The Dark Side of Migration,” published last week. In 2013, the figure stood at just 3,500, the outlet noted.

 

Ukrainians were responsible for more than a half of the crimes, followed by citizens of Georgia and Belarus, police data suggested, according to the paper.

 

One in three violations was related to alcohol abuse and drunk driving. There were 4,898 such cases last year, with Ukrainian citizens reportedly involved in 70% of them. Driving while intoxicated is becoming a “growing problem” in Poland, with the high level of alcohol detected in blood samples from the perpetrators “surprising” even experienced police officers, the paper wrote.

 

Many migrants also fail to observe court-ordered bans over drunk driving. In 2023, 871 foreigners, 518 of them Ukrainians, were charged with driving while banned, which is punishable by up to three years behind bars. According to police figures, there were only 400 such incidents in 2022.

 

Some foreign nationals feel impunity as they are not citizens of the country, traffic expert Wojciech Apiary told Rzeczpospolita.

 

”There are 2.5 million Ukrainian citizens in Poland, so this phenomenon has to be related to this”fact, Miroslaw Skorka from the Association of Ukrainians in Poland said. The Ukrainians might be “drinking more” and getting behind the wheel due to “cultural” reasons, he suggested.

 

According to police data, the number of thefts and drug-related crimes by foreigners also went up in Poland last year, reaching 3,240 and 2,451 respectively. In 208 cases, perpetrators were caught with “significant amounts” of narcotics on them.

 

”We have more and more foreigners. In their own countries, they’re often afraid to break the law, but in Poland they believe themselves to be guests, to whom more is allowed,” Professor of Criminology Brunon Holyst said, calling for social campaigns to explain the consequences of violating the law.

On Friday, Americans learned that illegal crossings along the U.S. southern border reached an all-time high in December 2023, with a whopping 249,785 arrests. That number is up 31 percent from the December 2022 total of 222,018, also an all-time high. Those arrests are crossings we know about. The actual number of people who have no business being in the United States is undoubtedly much higher. WaPo columnist again highlights shifting Western view on Ukraine

There is ‘a sense of desperation’ among the leadership in Kiev, Ishaan Tharoor has reported

 

The leadership in Ukraine is losing hope of success in the conflict with Russia amid waning Western support and a lack of battlefield achievements, a Washington Post writer has claimed.

 

Kiev continues to demand more weapons and aid from the US and its allies, although officials in Washington “anticipate a lean year ahead, where Ukraine’s increasingly exhausted forces focus more on consolidating their defense than chipping away at Russia’s land-grabs,” the newspaper’s Ishaan Tharoor told readers.

 

“It’s hard to ignore the sense of desperation in Ukraine’s corridors of power” after almost two years of military conflict with Moscow, the foreign affairs columnist stressed.

 

Ukraine’s attempted counteroffensive last year “failed to make strategic headway against Russia’s deep defensive lines,”Tharoor acknowledged. Fresh reports from the front line have warned that stocks of ammunition and artillery shells are running low for Kiev’s troops, he added.

 

At the same time, Moscow “stood its ground, withstood international sanctions and is preparing for fresh offensives,” while also regularly carrying out large-scale missile barrages against Ukrainian targets, he added.

 

According to the article, the tour of Washington and other Western capitals by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in late 2023 was an attempt to counter “international fatigue with the conflict and paralysis in US Congress over new supplemental funding for Kiev.”

 

The administration of US President Joe Biden is still unable to find common ground with Republican lawmakers, who are demanding tougher measures on the border with Mexico in exchange for agreeing another $60 billion in assistance for Kiev.

 

As a result, Pentagon officials arrived “empty-handed” at the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting in Brussels last week, Tharoor said. “The West may have already squandered its best chance to enable Ukraine to fully liberate its territory,” he added.

 

The fate of the conflict between Russia in Ukraine could soon be sealed by “the shortfalls on Ukraine’s front lines and divisions in Washington,” the article claimed.

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week that Zelensky is “desperately” seeking to return to a situation when Kiev enjoyed “unlimited” funding and weapons supplies from the West. However, this will “never happen again” because the US and its allies are running out of arms and ammunition to send, he stressed.

 

Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated that “the goals of [Moscow’s] military operation [in the Ukraine conflict] are going to be achieved consistently and persistently.”

The Nevada Republican Party is working with the Republican National Committee to hold the RNC’s 2024 Winter Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada starting January 30 – February 3, 2024.

 

The meeting is taking place one week before the Nevada Caucus, which is set for February 8th.

 

At this meeting, Ronna Romney is expected to announce the RNC’s plan to extend lines of credit to state parties that are in debt.

 

This is not a good thing. Essentially, the RNC is joining with anti-Trump donors to extend a life line to state GOPs in an election year. Of course the big question is… if state GOPs take the RNC up on this “line of credit” since the RNC is broke and can’t support state GOPs, will the parties that accept the credit line then have to use the lawyers and operatives that are hand selected by Ronna Romney?

UN workers helped Hamas kidnap Israelis – NYT

 

The allegations that led nearly a dozen countries to suspend aid payments to UNRWA remain unverified

 

Several aid workers with the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA helped kidnap Israelis and arm Hamas during its attack on October 7, the New York Times claimed on Sunday citing the contents of a secret Israeli government report.

 

The dossier allegedly details Israel’s claims about twelve UNRWA employees said to be involved in the raid. Seven were teachers with the agency and two more worked at its schools in other capacities, while the other three were a clerk, social worker, and storeroom manager. Ten of the workers were also allegedly members of Hamas, whose civilian wing remains the legally-elected government of Gaza despite its classification as a terrorist group by West Jerusalem, while another was said to be affiliated with Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

 

A school counselor from Khan Younis supposedly worked with his son to kidnap an Israeli woman, while a social worker from Nuseirat reportedly removed a dead Israeli soldier’s body back to Gaza and helped distribute vehicles and ammunition ahead of the raid. Another three men allegedly received text messages summoning them to meeting points on October 7, with one ordered to bring rocket-propelled grenades.

 

Two US officials told the New York Times that while they had been briefed on the Israeli allegations, they had not verified the details. Washington was nevertheless first to cut off UNRWA’s funding on Friday, followed by Canada and over half a dozen more on Saturday.

 

Because UNRWA lacks any emergency cash reserves, it may have to curtail the vital services it provides to some 5 million Palestinians starting in February. The funding cutoff comes at a precarious time for Gaza’s residents, many of whom already face hunger and starvation. Over 85% of them have been displaced from their homes since the war began, according to the UN.

 

Israel’s accusations came just days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take action to prevent genocide in Gaza, including by allowing more aid deliveries to reach the territory’s besieged residents. While the ruling indicated the court found South Africa’s genocide case against Israel to have some merit, it stopped short of issuing an immediate demand for a ceasefire.

Texas Meteorologists Believe Mysterious Blob Spotted on Radar Was Military “Chaff”

 

Meteorologists in Northern Texas were baffled last week when their radar systems detected a thinly-shaped blob drifting across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

 

The National Weather Service reported its radar systems picked up a strange blob sweeping over the Dallas Fort Worth area despite it not raining.

 

After further examination, the National Weather Service of Fort Worth stated that their “best guess is chaff.”

 

The NWS continued, “The military will sometimes run exercises where they release chaff, and it’s completely harmless. But it definitely shows up on radar as it is quite reflective.”

 

Chaff is a “radiofrequency countermeasure released by military aircraft, ships, and vehicles to confuse enemy radar.”

 

Chaff was first used on the battlefield during Operation Gomorrah in Germany and notably used the day before D-Day.

‼️Fact 5. The secession of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk are a direct result of the 2014 coup. In Crimea, a referendum vote (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Crimean_status_referendum#:~:text=The%20official%20result%20from%20the,Russian%20Federation%20with%20an%2089) was rapidly organized. With 83% turnout and 97% voting in favor, Crimeans decided to secede from Ukraine and re-unify with Russia. Crimea was part of Russia since 1783.  When the administration of Crimea was transferred to the Ukraine in 1954 they were all part of the Soviet Union. This was done without consulting the population.

In the provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk on the border with Russia, the majority of the population speaks Russian and had no hostility to Russia. The Kiev coup regime was hostile and enacting policies they vehemently disagreed with.  In spring 2014,  the Luhansk and Donetsk Peoples Republics declared their independence from the Kiev regime.

The Minsk Agreements (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minsk_agreements#Minsk_Protocol) of 2014 and 2015 were signed by Ukraine, Ukrainian rebels, Russia and other European authorities.  They were designed to stop the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine and retain the territorial integrity of Ukraine while granting a measure of autonomy to Luhansk and  Donetsk. This is not abnormal; there are 17 autonomous zones in Europe. These agreements were later rebuffed by the Kiev government and Washington. This led to the decision by Russia on 21 February 2022 to recognize the Peoples Republics of Donetsk (DPR) and Luhansk (LPR).

 

But isn’t secession illegal under international law? The US and NATO have little credibility to oppose secession since they promoted the breakup of Yugoslavia, secession of Kosovo from Serbia,  secession of South Sudan from Sudan, and Kurdish secessionist efforts in Iraq and Syria, etc.. The secession of Crimea is justified by its unique history and overwhelming popular support. The secession of Luhansk and Donetsk may be justified by the illegal 2014 Kiev coup.

 

US intervention, both open and secret, has been a major driver of the events in Ukraine. The US has been the major instigator of the conflict.
