E. Jean Carroll wants to give $83M in damages to something Donald Trump 'HATES' and will 'cause him pain' after defamation verdict

The columnist, 80, said the elation she felt was 'almost painful' when a Manhattan jury awarded her the staggering sum on Friday for the former president defaming her and calling her a liar in 2019 when she accused him of sexual assault.

 

She is now considering setting up a fund for women 'sexually assaulted' by Trump and has threatened to bring another legal case if he defames her online again.. (Thereโ€™s the ongoing plan, a total lie backed by a corrupt judge and lawyer, and even more corrupt Plaintiff. The DS never thought it would work, because it did, they will stick with this.)

Carroll told Good Morning America she burst into tears when she 'exchanged smiles' with the jury as she walked out of the courtroom.

 

It was the second time a New York jury has ruled in her favor against Trump in a case stemming from her allegations he raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the 1990s.

 

Trump called the Friday verdict 'ridiculous' as he returned to the campaign trail in Nevada. The Republican frontrunner in the presidential race wasn't in court when the verdict was read out.But hours earlier he stormed out when Kaplan told the jury they should punish him.

 

He has also blamed his legal problems on President Joe Biden and claims he is being targeted because he is leading in the polls.

 

Carroll and Kaplan know they might not get the damages right away, and hinted that he may have to sell some of his real estate.

 

Describing the weeks leading up to the trial, Carroll said she 'couldn't eat, couldn't do anything'. Then when she saw Trump in the courtroom, she says: 'He was like nothing'. 'I looked out. He was like nothing. Like an emperor without clothes.

 

'It was an amazing reaction. It's probably because she had taken me by my little hand and made me feel that secure. 'He is the emperor with no clothes. He is not there. The there is not there.'

 

Kaplan then said that 'all options are on the table' if Trump defames Carroll again.

 

'If we have to bring another case, weโ€™ll bring another caseโ€ฆitโ€™s just going to be more money,' Kaplan added.

Snoop Dogg has said he has 'nothing but love and respect' for Donald Trump - despite hurling a barrage of insults at the former president over the last few years.

 

The iconic Drop It Like It's Hot rapper, 52, said the 2024 Republican hopeful has never done anything wrong to him and sung his praises in a new interview.

 

He did not go as far as endorsing him for the upcoming General Election against Democrat Joe Biden, but Snoop said Trump did 'great things' when he pardoned one of his friends, Michael Harris, from his prison sentence in 2021.

 

This is despite Snoop previously parodying Trump's assassination in his music videos, telling people not to vote for him, calling his fans 'stupid motherf*ers,' and saying he's a 'racist, fking clown president' during his last tenure.

 

Snoop, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., seems to have turned over a new leaf. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Snoop said:'Donald Trump? He ain't done nothing wrong to me.'He has done only great things for me. He pardoned Michael Harris.

 

'So I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.'

 

In 2021, the rap mogul saluted the 'great work' Trump and his administration did 'on the way out' after he learned that cocaine kingpin Michael 'Harry O' Harris was pardoned.

 

Snoop said at the time: 'That's great work for the president and his team on the way out.They did some great work while they was in there and they did some great work on their way out. Let them know that I love what they did.'

 

He continued:'It is amazing what the work of God can actually bring to life to make people understand that there is a God.'

 

In the past: In 2011, Snoop Dogg made a joke about Trump one day running for president after Barack Obama's tenure, saying: 'Why not? It wouldn't be the first time you'd pushed a black family out of their home.'

 

Snoop has had a somewhat fraught public relationship with the former president. He has exclaimed 'f**k Trump' multiple times, and even parodied his assassination.

 

In January 2019, posting a video to his Instagram, the Doggfather urged government employees not to vote for Trump because 'he doesn't give a f*** about y'all.'

 

He also used the profanity-laced message to attack Trump has his supporters directly, saying: 'F him too, and f everybody down with Donald Trump.'

 

Wearing a blue hat with the slogan Make America Snow Again on the front - a play on Trump's election slogan and the Jeezy song Snow Season - he says: 'I just wanna say this real quick on the political s***.

 

'All you people for the federal government that are not getting paid right now,ain't no f*ing way in the world you can vote for Donald Trump when he comes back up again. 'If ya'll do vote for him, y'all some stupid motherf*ers, I'm saying that to y'all early.'

 

Somewhat of a fate predictor, Trump has gone on to run again for President - and with his wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, the likelihood that he'll be on the Republican ticket is becoming more and more plausible.

In some jurisdictions you would be liable to the livestock owner for damages. But not in others. It's a County (Court) by County issue.

 

In some places if you shot someone's animal simply for being on your property the owner would shoot you and bury you in the back 40 and no one would ever find you.

The Biden administration will start implementing a new requirement for the developers of major artificial intelligence systems to disclose their safety test results to the government.

 

The White House AI Council is scheduled to meet Monday to review progress made on the executive order that President Joe Biden signed three months ago to manage the fast-evolving technology.

 

Chief among the 90-day goals from the order was a mandate under the Defense Production Act that AI companies share vital information with the Commerce Department, including safety tests.

 

Ben Buchanan, the White House special adviser on AI, said in an interview that the government wants "to know AI systems are safe before they're released to the public โ€” the president has been very clear that companies need to meet that bar."

 

The software companies are committed to a set of categories for the safety tests, but companies do not yet have to comply with a common standard on the tests. The government's National Institute of Standards and Technology will develop a uniform framework for assessing safety, as part of the order Biden signed in October.

 

AI has emerged as a leading economic and national security consideration for the federal government, given the investments and uncertainties caused by the launch of new AI tools such as ChatGPT that can generate text, images and sounds. The Biden administration also is looking at congressional legislation and working with other countries and the European Union on rules for managing the technology.

 

The Commerce Department has developed a draft rule on U.S. cloud companies that provide servers to foreign AI developers.

 

Nine federal agencies, including the departments of Defense, Transportation, Treasury and Health and Human Services, have completed risk assessments regarding AI's use in critical national infrastructure such as the electric grid.

 

The government also has scaled up the hiring of AI experts and data scientists at federal agencies.

 

"We know that AI has transformative effects and potential," Buchanan said. "We're not trying to upend the apple cart there, but we are trying to make sure the regulators are prepared to manage this technology."

Venus briefly flashed a shimmering green light in the night sky above Sweden, new footage reveals. The rarely seen phenomenon is almost identical to the ethereal green flashes that are occasionally seen around the sun during sunrises and sunsets.

 

Photographer Peter Rosรฉn captured the colorful flash coming from one of our closest planetary neighbors while he was watching Venus rise above the horizon in Stockholm in the early hours of Jan. 8, Spaceweather.com reported.

 

The bright flash, which lasted for around a second, was an "unexpected bonus" that added to what was already an awe-inspiring experience, Rosรฉn told Spaceweather.com.

 

Similar green flashes are occasionally seen coming from the sun as the sun rises above an ocean horizon. The light shows are caused by light from the celestial objects being refracted, or split apart, as it passes through our planet's atmosphere.

 

Visible light is made up of different wavelengths of colored light, which collectively give the rays a white color. But when light from the sun shines through Earth's atmosphere, the individual wavelengths get partially refracted by gas molecules. This happens all the time: For example, the daytime sky appears blue because blue wavelengths scatter more than any other wavelength.

 

However, with the right conditions, such as clear skies, light from the sun and nearby planets can fully separate, especially when they are positioned near the horizon because the light has to travel through more of the atmosphere to reach the observer.

 

When this happens, shorter wavelengths of light, such as blues and violets, are scattered the most, while longer wavelengths, like reds, oranges and yellows, are more readily absorbed by molecules in the atmosphere. As a result, mid-length green wavelengths are sometimes the only colors that reach an observer. However, the angle has to be just right for this to happen, which is why it only appears to the observer as a brief flash.

 

In the recent footage of Venus, green is the most prominent color that flashes from the planet. But if you look closely you can also see yellow, orange, red and blue light shimmer around as well.

 

In some circumstances, ice crystals can also refract sunlight in the atmosphere to create rainbow-colored clouds and halos of light around the sun or moon. The same effect can also create rainbow rings around objects as light is refracted by large grains of floating pollen.

 

Green flashes have been spotted coming from Venus a handful of times before. Similar green flashes have also been captured in images of Mercury and the moon.

 

But unlike green flashes around the sun, which appear more frequently in the clear air above the ocean, these light shows are more commonly seen through extremely cold air, which magnifies the effect. This means planetary flashes are not so tightly constrained to the horizon, according to Spaceweather.com.

Gun owners in Maryland would be required to buy at least $300,000 in liability insurance or forfeit their ability to carry a firearm under a new bill.

 

The controversial legislation, introduced by Delegate Terri Hill, D-Howard County, would prohibit the โ€œwear or carryโ€ of a gun anywhere in the state unless the individual has obtained a liability insurance policy of at least $300,000.

 

โ€œA person may not wear or carry a firearm unless the person has obtained it and is covered by liability insurance issued by an insurer authorized to do business in the State under the Insurance Article to cover claims for property damage, bodily injury, or death arising from an accident resulting from the personโ€™s use or storage of a firearm or up to $300,000 for damages arising from the same incident, in addition to interest and costs,โ€ the proposed Maryland legislation said.

 

According to the proposed law, the liability insurance requirement does not apply to members of the military or federal law enforcement officers.

SLIM moon lander revived after solar power setback

Japanโ€™s SLIM moon lander has resumed operations more than a week after its imperfect yet historic lunar landing.

 

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed contact had been reestablished with the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) spacecraft late Jan. 28. The development comes just days ahead of a likely mission-ending sunset.

 

The large SUV-sized spacecraft was forced to power down just two over hours after landing Jan. 19 due to its solar cell not generating electricity. SLIM finally powered up again as the position of the sun in the sky changed, finally illuminated SLIMโ€™s solar cell.

 

The spacecraft suffered a malfunction during descent that resulted in an unintended attitude upon landing and solar panels facing away from the sun.

 

JAXA stated via X, formerly known as Twitter, that science observations were immediately started with SLIMโ€™s multiband spectroscopic camera (MBC), adding 10-band observations were made. The agency imaged a feature of a rock dubbed โ€œtoy poodleโ€ observed by the multi-band observation.

 

The first hints that SLIM had been revived came from Germany-based amateur radio satellite organization AMSAT-DL. Its Bochum observatory detected a signal later confirmed to be SLIM engaged in a downlink with ground stations.

 

The sun will set over Shioli crater early Eastern Jan. 31, meaning SLIM has limited time to charge its batteries and conduct science observations.

 

Neither SLIM nor its rovers carry radioisotope heater units. Thus they are not expected to survive the lunar nighttime, when temperatures will drop to around minus 130 Celsius.

 

MBC aboard SLIM will attempt to make observations that could generate useful lunar science data. Katherine Joy, a Reader in Earth Sciences at the University of Manchester, told SpaceNews ahead of the landing that the target site is located on an ejecta blanket of a much larger, roughly 100 km diameter, impact crater called Theophilus.

He claimed the bodies were kept inside a "massive" and refrigerated room deep below Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Centre, which is about 10km northeast of Washington DC, in Greenbelt, Maryland in the US.

Uri said German rocket engineer Wernher von Braun and astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, brought him to a concrete building at the base.

Three flights of stairs below the building, he claims to have seen about eight bodies - some of which were "not intact but mangled" - in glass containers.

 

He said: "Before we went in von Braun asked me to put on an orange, Antarctic-style warm coat - with the circular blue NASA logo on it - and he also put one on too.

"Inside it smelled like a hospital.

"I could see what looked like heavy, glass containers, with lifeless bodies lying inside them.

 

"It was a shocking sight! Like when you see an accident that has happened, and you feel like something has hit you in the stomach."

The transparent containers the "aliens" were kept in were thick and triple-glazed, Uri said.

Inside the "coffins" - which were supposedly misted with frost along the edges and corners - were thin and frail-looking, small-bodied creatures with big heads, according to the magician.

 

He claimed: "They looked uncannily like us -enough for me to feel repulsed and sorry for seeing these 'victims'.

"They had either been severely injured or had decomposed a lot. But not all."

The memo, which was believed to have been leaked from the archives of late astronaut Edgar Mitchell, stated: "After Kit left the CIA he was called into the Pentagon by a person in uniform.

"This person showed Kit the alien autopsy photos and reports etc. The photos of the alien cadaver Kit saw were consistent with the cadaver seen in the 1995 Santilli film/video.

 

"Kit was asked to professional evaluate the material provided to him at this particular briefing."

Green provided his professional evaluation of the footage in January 2001, according to the leaked document.

A summary of his evaluation stated: "The Alien Autopsy film/video is real, the alien cadaver is real, and the cadaver seen in the film/video is the same as the photos Kit saw at the 1987/88 Pentagon briefing."

 

The strange video was released to the world by Brit entrepreneur Ray Santilli, who claimed he obtained it in 1992 from a retired US military cameraman while seeking archive footage of Elvis Presley in the US.

'' President Joe Biden has ordered the deployment of an additional 3,000 U.S. soldiers to NATO ally Poland as fears grow that a crisis between Ukraine and Russia may turn into a military conflict.''

 

A statement from the Pentagon on February 11 said the troops should be in place by "early next week," joining some 1,700 soldiers who arrived in Poland at the start of the month.

 

"All told, these 5,000 additional personnel comprise a highly mobile and flexible force, capable of multiple missions. They are being deployed to reassure our NATO allies, deter any potential aggression against NATOโ€™s eastern flank, train with host-nation forces, and contribute to a wide range of contingencies," the Pentagon statement said.

 

Earlier on February 11, White House national-security adviser Jake Sullivan said Russia now has enough forces at its border with Ukraine to conduct a major military operation, adding that if a Russian attack on Ukraine proceeds, โ€œit is likely to begin with aerial bombing and missile attacks that could obviously kill civilians."

 

Russia has denied that its buildup of more than 100,000 soldiers and military hardware in areas near the border with Ukraine is a prelude to a new invasion of the former Soviet republic.

 

Moscow denies Western accusations it may be planning an invasion, saying it has the right to station troops anywhere it wants on Russian soil.

Congress Hops To

 

Instead of forcing Biden to simply wave his pen and start securing the border, a bipartisan group of lawmakers simply can't let a good opportunity for pork go to waste, and are 'on the verge' of striking a deal with the Biden administration that would enact 'sweeping new border controls,' according to CBS News.

 

After weeks of closed-door negotiations, the White House and a trio of senators could unveil an agreement as early as this week, the sources said, requesting anonymity due to the private nature of the conversations. The bill is designed to reduce the unprecedented levels of illegal crossings recorded along the southern border in the past three years.

 

While GOP Sen. James Lankford, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy and independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema are close to finalizing the compromise with the White House, any bipartisan immigration proposal would face an uphill battle in the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson and other conservative lawmakers have pushed for even stricter changes to the asylum system.

 

The agreement would give the executive branch new legal authority to effectively suspend asylum between official ports of entry after migrant crossings reach certain levels in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. When this authority is invoked, illegal immigrants would face swift deportation to Mexico or their home country, unless they qualify to stay following screenings for 'humanitarian refuge.'

 

There's a Catchโ€ฆ

 

The bipartisan rule still allows migrant crossings to hit an average of 5,000 per day, or 8,500 in a single day, before the power would be mandated. So, there would still be up to 150,000 illegal crossings permitted monthly.

 

No word from CBS whether the Sunday bipartisan package includes Ukraine or Israel funds.

Alzheimerโ€™s disease was passed to patients given hormones extracted from corpses, scientists have shown for the first time.

Five people are believed to have developed Alzheimerโ€™s after they were treated with a human growth hormone which inadvertently contained the seeds of dementia.

The tainted hormone was given to more than 1,800 children of short stature in the UK between 1959 and 1995 before being withdrawn when it was shown to trigger Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).

Now, scientists at University College London (UCL) have found that the same batch responsible for cases of CJD also appears to have triggered Alzheimerโ€™s in some patients. The youngest developed dementia symptoms at just 38 years old.

Professor John Collinge, director of the UCL Institute of Prion Diseases and a consultant neurologist at UCLH, lead author of the research, said: โ€œWe are not suggesting for a moment you can catch Alzheimerโ€™s disease. You canโ€™t catch it by being a carer or living with a husband or wife with the disease.

โ€œThe patients we have described were given a specific and long-discontinued medical treatment which involved injecting patients with material now known to have been contaminated with disease-related proteins.

โ€œHowever, the recognition of transmission in these rare situations should lead us to review measures to prevent accidental transmission via other medical or surgical procedures, in order to prevent such cases occurring in future.โ€

Amyloid-beta proteins found in hormone

British scientists initially stumbled across the discovery while studying the brains of eight people who died of CJD after being injected with a human growth hormone.

Unexpectedly, four of the patients had huge levels of amyloid beta protein โ€“ a sticky deposit which forms among brain cells and stops them communicating with each other properly in Alzheimerโ€™s patients.

Although none had developed dementia, scientists say it is likely they would have, had they lived longer.

Researchers then tracked down the original growth hormone which had been stored by the Department of Health, and found it did indeed contain the misfolded amyloid-beta proteins implicated in Alzheimerโ€™s.

When they injected the banned hormone into the brains of mice, the animals began to develop the signs of neurodegenerative disease.

Now, scientists have discovered that five people treated with the hormone have developed the symptoms of Alzheimerโ€™s disease despite being aged just 38 to 55. None were at genetic risk for the condition.

First author Dr Gargi Banerjee (UCL Institute of Prion Diseases) said: โ€œWe have found that it is possible for amyloid-beta pathology to be transmitted and contribute to the development of Alzheimerโ€™s disease.

โ€œThis transmission occurred following treatment with a now obsolete form of growth hormone, and involved repeated treatments with contaminated material, often over several years. There is no indication that Alzheimerโ€™s disease can be acquired from close contact, or during the provision of routine care.โ€

Amyloid proteins come in different strains

It is thought that the misfolded amyloid proteins clump together in โ€œstacksโ€ which grow over time until they get so long that they snap, creating new โ€œseedsโ€.

Each seed continues to grow, until this unfettered accumulation of amyloid in the brain starts to kill brain cells.

Dr Susan Kohlhaas, executive director of research and partnerships at Alzheimerโ€™s Research UK, said: โ€œThis study has revealed more about how amyloid fragments can spread within the brain, providing further clues on how Alzheimerโ€™s disease progresses and potential new targets for the treatments of tomorrow.โ€

There have been no reported cases of Alzheimerโ€™s acquired from any other medical or surgical procedures but the experts said it was important to review measures and possibly bring in better decontamination methods for surgical equipment.

The team also discovered that the amyloid proteins come in different strains, like viruses, and drugs which target the main strain could allow less dominant forms to develop, which are untreatable.

Co-author Professor Jonathan Schott, honorary consultant neurologist at UCLH, said: โ€œThese findings provide potentially valuable insights into disease mechanisms, and pave the way for further research which we hope will further our understanding of the causes of more typical, late onset Alzheimerโ€™s disease.โ€

Commenting on the new research, Dr Richard Oakley, associate director of research and innovation at Alzheimerโ€™s Society, said: โ€œIt is not known how common Alzheimerโ€™s transmission was in the 1,800 people who had this treatment and the study only looked at the records of eight people.

โ€œNowadays, patients receive synthetic alternatives which have been approved for safety and do not pose a risk of transmitting diseases.โ€

The research was published in the journal Nature Medicine.

The Era of Cadaveric Pituitary Extracted Human Growth Hormone (1958-1985):Biological and Clinical Aspects

 

Abstract

 

The first patient treated with cadaveric pituitary GH (hGH) was reported in 1958. Subsequently, collection of cadaveric pituitaries started in many countries and several centers extracted the hormone using one of two methods: a. Acetone preservation and extraction with hot glacial acetic acid (Rabin method) b. Collection in distilled water, freezing and extraction on columns yielding several pituitary hormones including hGH (Wilhelmi method). The purified extracts of hGH were found to have metabolic and growth stimulating activity but the limited amounts permitted the treatment only of children with GH deficiency (GHD). The purified hormone also permitted the development of specific radioimmunoassays enabling the study of the physiological and pharmacological actions of GH. In 1985 a number of patients treated years before with Wilhelmi hGH were diagnosed with Creutzfeld-Jacob-Disease (CJD). This led to the arrest of hGH production and the use of the then recently developed biosynthetic recombinant hGH.

Hollywood has gone crazy for human growth hormone, with top stars, filmmakers, and studio executives touting its benefits: ripped abs, fewer wrinkles, increased sex drive, more energy (and aggression), etc. With anti-aging clinics prescribing it freely, is H.G.H. a career-saving miracle or a pricey, silly, even hazardous placebo?

ITโ€™S JUST A SHOT AWAY โ€œI have the energy and vibrancy of a man half my age,โ€ says a doctor who takes H.G.H.

It was the moment every movie star fears most. It happened about two years ago, the actor recalls, a tad defensively. There he stood, in all his A-list glory, in front of the full-length mirror in his bathroom. Nine times out of 10, the mirror was just that big shiny thing he brushed past en route from the shower to the bedroom. He wasnโ€™t one of those actors. Despite his natural charisma, or perhaps because of it, he had always scored low on the Celebrity Vanity Index. โ€œAdmittedly, itโ€™s a relative scale,โ€ he says. โ€œWe do grade on a curve here.โ€

His first inclination, as he edged closer to his reflection, was to give himself the benefit of the doubt. Heโ€™d been around long enough to appreciate the degree to which harsh lighting and bad angles can make anyone look bad. But now, as the steam dissipated and the reflection took on crystal clarity, the time had come to confront a few essential truths. โ€œYou know how actors look in movies that โ€˜ageโ€™ their character over several years?โ€ he asks. โ€œI felt like I was glimpsing myself in the Act Three scene that begins with a tagline that reads, โ€˜Ten Years Later.โ€™ It was kind of a De Niro in Raging Bull moment. Except not award-winning.โ€

The skin around his eyes bordered on slack, grayish. Although the rest of his body was in relatively solid shapeโ€”he still exercised regularly, albeit with varying degrees of gustoโ€”the star detected telltale indicators of impending decline. There were โ€œlittle blotchy patchesโ€ on his skin and โ€œweird saggy stuffโ€ on his upper torso. The latter was especially disheartening, considering his immediate goals. The actor was circling a film role that would require him to be, in addition to semi-athletic, half naked. Nobody, least of all him, wanted to see this body on a screen 70 feet wide.

Then there was his energy level, which had been heading south for months. Likewise his libido. If being a movie star was all about charisma, and charisma was a kind of energy, then he needed to start exploring alternative energy sources, and fast. To hell with all those damned protein bars and shakes and oxygen chambers. And, frankly, heโ€™d tattoo PATHETIC on his forehead before heโ€™d let some shiny plastics guy cut his face open, or shoot it full of goo, or do any sort of โ€œwork.โ€ Thereโ€™s no sadder specimen, in his view, than the actor who labors under the impression that no one can tell.

The first time he was offered H.G.H.โ€”short for โ€œhuman growth hormoneโ€โ€”it freaked him out. This was about three years ago, while he was vacationing with friends. During a late-night search for toothpaste, he found his friend injecting a needle into his belly. โ€œParty, drugs, needles, bathroom,โ€ the actor says. โ€œDo the math.โ€

He was relieved to learn that the syringe contained H.G.H., which the friend was taking as part of doctor-prescribed treatment for a hormone deficiency. โ€œMakes me feel 10 years younger,โ€ the friend said.

The guy did have a certain zip. And he looked, if not younger, pretty good. But still. H.G.H.? The junk all those roided-out ballplayers were using? Why would any actor go there?

As it turned out, though, the actor knew plenty of people who used H.G.H. Most of them sang its praises, saying it made them look and feel stronger, sharper, younger; one of them, a studio executive, told him it had changed his life.

Two weeks later, the star again stood staring into his full-length mirror. He took a deep breath, pinched a layer of belly fat, and plunged the needle in.

A business in Hollywood is small potatoes until itโ€™s known by three letters: CAA, MGM, PMK, SAG, UTA, WME. These days, though, nothing is hotter than Hollywoodโ€™s latest health-and-fitness craze: H.G.H. therapy. Just ask any major-league Hollywood player. Earlier this year, following a game of tennis at a swank Beverly Hills country club, a prominent movie producer sat nursing a sore knee. โ€œJust take this,โ€ one of the club members said, offering a vial of H.G.H. A former studio executive recalls a recent dinner out with one of his colleagues. โ€œHeโ€™s a family man with a wife and kids,โ€ the executive says. โ€œAnd he just starts talking about using H.G.H. I was like, โ€˜Are you crazy?! Youโ€™re fucking shooting yourself up?!โ€™ But he said, โ€˜No, itโ€™s great. And I feel great in the morning. And itโ€™s invigorating.โ€™ โ€

Both sources can rattle off a list of Hollywood H.G.H. users, starting with several top-shelf movie stars of both genders. H.G.H.โ€”or โ€œH,โ€ as jocks call itโ€”is an equal-opportunity employer, except as pertains to age. Although one particularly ripped twentysomething heartthrob is said to be on the needle, H.G.H. is largely the domain of stars who wish they were still under 35. The surest giveaway? โ€œAny actor over 50 youโ€™re still seeing with a ripped stomach and veins in his forearms is probably taking H.G.H.,โ€ says a talent manager who represents one famously veiny TV star.

โ€œI definitely saw a difference in my skin,โ€ says Alana Stewart, an active member of the Hollywood social scene. โ€œI know it gave me energy and made me feel kind of more balanced.โ€ Before she began the treatment, she says, โ€œI had started noticing a few gray hairs coming in. But I noticed that when I was taking itโ€”no gray hairs.โ€

But donโ€™t expect many on-the-record testimonials. So far, the only major players to step forward have been Sylvester Stallone, Nick Nolte, and Oliver Stone. To acknowledge H.G.H. use is to acknowledge weakness. โ€œPeople talk about H.G.H.โ€”which can cost upwards of $10,000 per yearโ€”the way they talk about people who get Botox or Viagra,โ€ says a movie producer. โ€œWhat you donโ€™t ever hear is people talking about it as if they do it. Itโ€™s always those other dudes who look ridiculous.โ€

Growing Pains

In a sense, H.G.H. is the love child of Viagra and Botox; when administered appropriately, it is said to smooth wrinkles, reduce body fat, and increase lean-muscle mass and bone density, while also improving oneโ€™s libido, mood, and overall sense of vitalityโ€”to the point that the recipient both looks and feels years younger. โ€œIt is a rejuvenating force,โ€ says Dr. Uzzi Reiss, a Beverly Hills physician on the forefront of the H.G.H. trend.

In the late 1950s, doctors began injecting severely undersize children with growth hormone extracted from human cadavers. A protein produced by the pituitary gland, it stimulates the growth of pretty much everything, including cells, bones, and muscles. Major H.G.H. deficiency in children leads to stunted growth, even dwarfism. Supplies were limited and therefore restricted to the highest-need patients. Sometimes the treatment sparked modest growth spurts; sometimes the child experienced nothing except aching joints and crushing disappointment. The great leap forward occurred in 1985, when the Food and Drug Administration approved a biosynthetic form of H.G.H. developed by Genentech, the South San Franciscoโ€”based biotechnology company.

The modern iteration of H.G.H. went boom because the therapy showed promising results. The average pre-teen patient grew two inches, maybe a bit more; the gain, although modest by the standards of most people, was gold to the tiny nine-year-old everyone taunted in gym class. Side effectsโ€”the main ones were joint pain and swellingโ€”tended to be mild and treatable.

Long-term risks were somewhat more troubling. Endocrinologists have been monitoring H.G.H. recipients ever since those first treatments. Now, armed with 30 yearsโ€™ worth of dataโ€”a bounty, by new-to-market standardsโ€”the researchers found a few concerning trends, among them an increased risk of cancer, heart failure, and diabetes. The diabetes is thought to be caused by H.G.H.โ€™s tendency to increase glucose intolerance (because the hormone impacts the metabolization of carbohydrates). But all pharmaceuticals pose some degree of hazard. The medical establishment, having done the risk-reward analysis, came down in favor of H.G.H. for appropriate patients.

The F.D.A. subsequently approved the therapy as a treatment for a handful of disorders that impair physical growth and development, among them Turnerโ€™s syndrome (a genetic condition in which a female does not have two complete X chromosomes), Prader-Willi syndrome (another congenital genetic disease, which causes obesity and reduced muscle tone and mental ability), chronic renal deficiency, and H.I.V.-associated wasting disease. The treatmentโ€™s efficacy in these areas was clear. You didnโ€™t need to be a clinician to see that H.G.H. could keep an H.I.V.-positive patientโ€™s muscles from atrophying, if only temporarily. By now pretty much everyone agreed the therapy was the gift that kept on giving; H.G.H.-deficient patients taking it experienced more attractive physiquesโ€”lean muscles, shrinking waistlinesโ€”and improved strength, speed, and endurance. They evinced a glow of skin and spirit, and presented as better versions of themselves; they were happier.

Skeptics were politely handed copies of The New England Journal of Medicine, circa 1990. There, in the Talmud of medical scholarship, doubters read the results of a study in which a dozen men between the ages of 61 and 81 received large doses of H.G.H. for six straight months. The men ended up losing 14 percent of their body fat while gaining 8.8 percent in lean muscle and 1.6 percent in bone density. The treatment, in the authorsโ€™ view, essentially reversed โ€œ10 to 20 years of aging.โ€

This was exciting news to Big Pharma, whose favorite sons (Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk) horned in on the action, sparking a marketing orgy that turned H.G.H. into a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Naturally, thatโ€™s when the shouting began.

One minute, H.G.H. was a godsend; the next, it was the scourge of the sports world. World-class athletes, in their never-ending quest to out-engineer one another, were โ€œenhancingโ€ themselves with whopping doses of H.G.H., often using it in tandem with anabolic steroids, testosterone, or other banned substances of the sort that turned East Germanyโ€™s womenโ€™s swim team into the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the meantime, the Internet was flooded with a billion opportunists peddling half-baked H.G.H. creams, powders, and pills. Overnight, it seemed, the country was filled with โ€œlongevity clinicsโ€ that prescribed H.G.H. to anyone with sniffles and a checkbook.

And then came Suzanne Somers. In 2006, the onetime sitcom star published the magnum opus of her H.G.H. trilogy. That would be Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones. The book, which celebrated H.G.H.โ€™s impact on the Seven Dwarfs of Menopauseโ€”Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All-Dried-Upโ€”was criticized by some doctors, including three who were quoted in the book. And it debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list.

โ€œA change is a-cominโ€™,โ€ Somers says today. โ€œAs the boomers age and lose their edge, they are looking around at the ones who are looking like they have a secret More and more, my phone rings with Hollywood folks who want to know who to go to. Thatโ€™s progress and I get great satisfaction from it. And I know my stuff. I live it, walk it, talk it.โ€

The trend arrived in Hollywood by way of the cityโ€™s flourishing community of bodybuilders, who passed it on to their confederates in show business. Hollywoodโ€™s early adopters were action stars. The genreโ€™s crown prince, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has denied ever using H.G.H. But Sylvester Stallone and several other action stars are known to have taken it.

Actors who use H.G.H. have one major advantage over athletes who do. โ€œThereโ€™s no real stigma about performance enhancing,โ€ says one filmmaker. โ€œActing is a business that operates on the any-means-necessary thing. Itโ€™s not like sports. Thereโ€™s less prejudice about altering your body.โ€

Producers and studios routinely urge actors to โ€œenhanceโ€ their appearance by way of, say, boob jobs, rhinoplasty, capped teeth, or buttocks implants. And acting is, after all, the art of transformation. The producer explains: โ€œAn actorโ€™s view would be โ€˜Well, it wasnโ€™t really me who did H.G.H. It was just the character.โ€™ โ€

H.G.H. finally started entering the mainstream in the late 2000s. We know this because thatโ€™s when the MTV alerts started flying. In 2008 the Albany Times Union reported that Mary J. Blige, Timbaland, 50 Cent, Tyler Perry, and Wyclef Jean were among tens of thousands of people found to have received shipments of H.G.H. and steroids. Macho, Macho Men

โ€˜Iโ€™ll tell you why I took H.G.H. in the first place,โ€ says a longtime Hollywood filmmaker. โ€œI love fucking.โ€

He continues: โ€œI like that sense of self that comes from confidence in that area. And when I hit my 50s, although I was still very sexually active, I was less so than I was in my 20s. And like other pathetically insecure Hollywoodites, I had an internal panic that led me to curiously explore what options were available in the world.โ€ He adds, โ€œI am one of the pathetically insecure Hollywood people who, like everyone else who lives here, is overly concerned with looks.โ€

Previously, he had tried testosterone therapy, which is also popular these days, and which is often administered in tandem with H.G.H. therapy. But โ€œT,โ€ as itโ€™s often called, made him a bit too alpha. He began berating one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood, who happened to be his boss, and who swiftly became his ex-boss. Testosterone, being testosterone, has the potential to produce roid-rage-type aggression in users who push the margins. One Hollywood executive known for his serial tantrums and abuses has since blamed the ugliness, in part, on his T therapy.

But H.G.H., unlike testosterone or steroids, is said to be a harbinger of peace. A few weeks into an H.G.H. regimen, the filmmaker says, โ€œmy internal organs got healthier quickly. And I could feel itโ€”the main impact of H.G.H., to me, was in mood. I was just generally healthy. I would wake up feeling great. H.G.H. is really useful, I found. It very much imbues you with a sense of clarity and confidence.โ€

The filmmaker, like so many of his peers, received his H.G.H. straight from one of the top H-men in town. That would be Dr. Uzzi Reiss, an Israeli-born practitioner of gynecology and anti-aging medicine. Reiss, although affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, spends most of his time running his private practice: the Beverly Hills Anti-aging Center for Men and Women & Advanced Nutrition and Hormone-Based Gynecology.

That Reiss is not an endocrinologist is sort of the point. Too many of those guys, Reiss thinks, are behind the curve on the benefits of H.G.H.โ€”a subject he has written about extensively, most recently in his book The Natural Superwoman. The man has been on Oprah. โ€œThe same doctors who criticize the uses of H.G.H. for anti-aging reasons take young, short childrenโ€”the most vulnerable populationโ€”and give them much larger doses and claim it is safe,โ€ Reiss says. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t make any sense.โ€

The other top H.G.H. guy in town is Dr. Andre Berger, a Canadian-born physician expert in the field of non-surgical cosmetic medicine. He, like Reiss, has authored an H.G.H.-centric book (The Beverly Hills Anti-aging Prescription), works the TV circuit, markets his own line of health-care products, and runs a practice whose name (Rejuvalife Vitality Institute) sounds like something out of a Philip K. Dick story. Berger is a practitioner of โ€œanti-aging medicine,โ€ rather than โ€œlongevity medicineโ€โ€”the designation preferred by certain other H.G.H.-friendly doctors. โ€œIf youโ€™re thinking about this as extending life, we canโ€™t do that,โ€ Berger says. โ€œAnti-aging medicine is about making people as vital, functional, happy, and active as they can be. Itโ€™s about maximizing their potential.

โ€œItโ€™s quite clear what the indications are for treatment,โ€ he adds. โ€œWe treat a deficiency disease.โ€ Then comes the million-dollar question: โ€œSo what is the definition of a deficiency?โ€

The answer depends on whom you ask.

For starters, at least, everyone agrees on one thing: a personโ€™s natural supply of H.G.H. declines with age. A 20-year-old produces more than twice as much H.G.H. as he will when heโ€™s 40; the losses continue from there, at the rate of about 15 percent per decade. Anti-aging doctors look at those numbers and say, in essence, โ€œNot so fast!โ€ They want the world to stop seeing the human life span as a triangle: full at the bottom, then steadily narrowing toward nothing. Life, they say, should be a rectangle: consistently broad until the end. โ€œPeople are going to be living longer,โ€ Berger says. โ€œThis is about preventing the chronic diseases and all the ravages that affect your quality of life.โ€

H.G.H., by turning back the body clock, turns back the aging process. Thatโ€™s the basic premise. โ€œI see it every day in my practice,โ€ Reiss says. โ€œI see it in myself. Iโ€™ve been taking H.G.H. for many years. I have the energy and vibrancy of a man half my age. Ask anyone. I donโ€™t get sick, donโ€™t get jet-lagged. I canโ€™t see why anybody would inject H.G.H. if it doesnโ€™t have benefits.โ€

The typical endocrinologist determines whether a patient is H.G.H.-deficient by way of, in addition to blood tests, something called a โ€œgrowth-hormone stimulation test.โ€ The pituitary gland secretes the most H.G.H. at night, during sleep. The stimulation tests essentially force the situation, at which point the patientโ€™s H.G.H. level is revealed to the endocrinologist, who then determines whether the number falls into the deficiency range. For example, a normal adultโ€™s H.G.H. level should fall somewhere around 250 micrograms a day. If it turns out to be very low, and if the subject is also showing symptoms of H.G.H. deficiency, heโ€™s deficient. Thatโ€™s how the Establishmentโ€”doctors, the F.D.A., insurance companiesโ€”determines whether H.G.H. therapy ought to be administered and covered.

But anti-aging specialists take a broaderโ€”and, in their opinion, more progressiveโ€”view of what constitutes a deficiency. And they do so legally, since F.D.A. guidelines allow for degrees of latitude and interpretation. Anti-aging doctors read tests a certain way, especially when a patient is clearly displaying symptoms of H.G.H. deficiency: fatigue, weakness, etc. In short, goes the theory, listen to H.G.H. โ€œThe testing to diagnose deficiency is controversial,โ€ Reiss says. โ€œItโ€™s too restrictive. Endocrinologists ignore a significant segment of the population that needs H.G.H.โ€

He has been giving himself H.G.H. injections for more than 20 years. And he does look terrific, with smooth skin and a lean body. And, by the way, H.G.H. needles are extremely thin, like those used by diabetics or acupuncturists. H.G.H. therapy, doctors say, is virtually painless.

Thereโ€™s just one catch. The vast majority of endocrinologists, when asked about the widespread treatment for H.G.H. deficiency, agree.

Itโ€™s baloney.

House of Mirrors

Everyone agrees the therapy is effective for legitimately H.G.H.-deficient patientsโ€”a population of fewer than 5 out of 10,000. One of the F.D.A.โ€™s lead endocrinologists, Dr. Dragos Roman, canโ€™t fully explain why the number of new H.G.H. patients per year exceeds 6,000, except to say this: โ€œThe F.D.A. doesnโ€™t regulate off-label uses of H.G.H. Sometimes itโ€™s used appropriately. Sometimes itโ€™s not.โ€

Two of the countryโ€™s most noted academic clinicians in the field of endocrinologyโ€”Dr. Stanley Korenman (U.C.L.A.) and Dr. Mark Molitch (Northwestern)โ€”agree that only a tiny fraction of the population is actually H.G.H.-deficient. โ€œBut now,โ€ Korenman says, with a hint of irritation, โ€œwe have clinics all over Beverly Hills where they do their own testing and everyone is growth-hormone-deficient.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not thrilled with those people,โ€ Molitch says. โ€œYou can prescribe anything if the patient is going to pay for it.โ€

Hollywood is fertile ground for people seeking a fountain of youth at any price. (See sidebar.) โ€œThere are all sorts of characters who went into medicine to make a lot of money,โ€ Korenman says. โ€œTheyโ€™ll be โ€˜obesity doctors.โ€™ Theyโ€™ll be โ€˜longevity doctors.โ€™ Theyโ€™ll be one goddamned thing or another in order to get rich.โ€ Too often, Korenman says, anti-aging specialists are fast-buck artists who push H.G.H. because they get a piece of the action. Since insurance companies rarely cover H.G.H. therapy, patients buy the hormones from their prescribing physicians. The physicians, often having bought the hormones directly from the manufacturers, sell the vials at marked-up prices. The average H.G.H. recipient will fork over roughly $8,000 to $10,000 a year, not including office visits and lab tests.

More often than not, the doctors say, H.G.H. recipients are a self-selecting lot: the sort of people willing to pay big dollars in order to enhance their bodies. โ€œIโ€™ve got a bunch of patients whoโ€™ve been through the longevity thing,โ€ Korenman says. โ€œAnd they realize theyโ€™ve spent fortunes, because not only do they buy growth hormones and testosterone, but these doctors sell them all these herbs and spices, as I call them. All the โ€˜supplements.โ€™ The patients always come with a bag full of them.โ€ He adds, โ€œPeople with money get the worst medical care, by the way. They have an idรฉe fixe. And theyโ€™re going to look for the doctor who agrees with it.โ€

And with self-selection comes a placebo effect. Korenman says, โ€œDoing these rituals, making these sacrifices, spending the moneyโ€”itโ€™s all very powerful. It makes them feel that theyโ€™re doing the right thing. And then they feel better.โ€

For every H.G.H. user who sings the praises of H.G.H. comes a patient who sees no improvement. That studio executive whose dinner companion took it? โ€œIt was funny because heโ€™s not in good shape,โ€ the executive says. โ€œHe wasnโ€™t transformed. I think it was psychological.โ€

Gunnar Peterson, a personal trainer whose client list includes Jennifer Lopez, Penรฉlope Cruz, and Madonna, sees plenty of H.G.H. users. He says, โ€œIf you think youโ€™re just going to inject yourself in the belly with a little prick and not train and eat whatever you want and youโ€™re going to be ripped, youโ€™re joking. People like that are going to try whatever the next flash in the pan is.โ€

The medical experts acknowledge that most users will see some small benefits. Recent data indicate that they will lose a few pounds of fat and gain a few pounds of lean muscle. But they wonโ€™t gain any muscle strength. (A recent study of H.G.H.โ€™s effects on a competitive sprinter, however, suggested that the therapy improved his time by almost 4 percent.)

Molitch cites several studies that explored whether H.G.H. therapy could in some way slow the aging process of adults with normal hormone levels. โ€œAll of those studies have uniformly shown no benefit,โ€ he says. โ€œIt was a legitimate question to ask. Itโ€™s been asked and answered.โ€

Worse, the doctors say, are the potential hazards of long-term H.G.H. use. Itโ€™s thought that people whose bodies produce too much H.G.H. face increased rates of cancer, heart disease, and early mortality. But the medical community also suspects that H.G.H. increases the risks of edema, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Because it stimulates cell growth, H.G.H. basically fertilizes any sort of malignancy. Thatโ€™s among the reasons why many endocrinologists donโ€™t encourage adults 50 or over (who are more prone to malignancies) to take H.G.H.

In the end, though, the doctors understand why actors and athletes go for it anyway. โ€œTheir lives and income depend on being the best,โ€ Korenman says. โ€œThey think, everyone is doing it, and the difference between being No. 1 and No. 2 is less than 1 percent.โ€

Or as one of the movie producers puts it, โ€œIf you had chosen to be an actor, I almost guarantee that if somebody you trusted said, โ€˜Dude, this could really help you,โ€™ youโ€™d do it. Youโ€™ve already sort of accepted that thereโ€™s probably a shelf life on your career, right? And so immediate changes become wildly attractive.โ€

Thatโ€™s how a certain movie star thought. The actorโ€”the one featured at the top of this articleโ€”remained on H.G.H. for about two years, during which his body definitely seemed to โ€ฆ something. His skin seemed to smooth out a bit. His abs made an appearance. And those dumbbells sure seemed lighter.

Karyn Olson did not want to vote for Donald Trump. If you had asked her just a few days ago, she would have said she was done with him. A 57-year-old retired government worker from Bristol, New Hampshire, Olson did not want Trump to be the Republican nominee for president because she did not believe he could beat Joe Biden, or whomever the Democratic Establishment decided to install as its candidate for the 2024 election, and more than anything, she did not want another four years of Democratic control of the White House.

For a long time, Olson was willing to tolerate Trumpโ€™s personality, which she did not like, if it meant the country would be shaped by his policies, which she did. But she thought he had frittered away the presidency through an ego trip of a reelection campaign, and his โ€œsuper-baseโ€ of supporters, increasingly animated by a dark religious fervor that was freaking her out, had staged a riot on government property over the results, and even if Olson did believe the contest was โ€œrigged,โ€ she could not endorse violence, and what she saw that day made it much harder to abide the former presidentโ€™s ugly quirks.

 

She had been planning to be in Washington, D.C., herself to rally against Nancy Pelosi in 2021, but in the days leading up to January 6, the tone and content of the posts she saw from Trump supporters gave her pause. โ€œOver time, I had joined different Trump groups, you know, Women for Trump, Bikers for Trump, all this stuff. I didnโ€™t like a lot of what was being said in the groups,โ€ she said. โ€œSomeone posted a picture of a guy, shirtless, with an underage boy โ€” it was creepy โ€” and they said, โ€˜This is Chief Justice John Roberts.โ€™ And so I commented, like, โ€˜That is not Chief Justice John Robertsโ€™ โ€” it just wasnโ€™t. It wasnโ€™t him. And I included a picture of the justice and then I got this pack of people responding, like, โ€˜Youโ€™re a pedophile!โ€™ Thatโ€™s what they do. I was like, Yeah, I donโ€™t want to be a part of this. Iโ€™m just going to not do that. I canceled my flight and hotel.โ€

By last year, around the time Trump landed on a schoolyard taunt for the governor of Florida, who was until recently his main rival for the Republican nomination, Olson was halfway out the door.

You can attack people without making fun of their name.โ€ She had been talking fast, and now she stopped to take a breath. โ€œThink of who has their name made fun of.โ€ She raised her eyebrows and burst out laughing. Her name is Karyn. โ€œItโ€™s very personal! Any time someone uses that trope against me, theyโ€™re off my Facebook page. Like, Bye!โ€

 

She liked that DeSantis is a veteran, and she thought he seemed like a good executive. During the pandemic, her son was working at a restaurant in Florida, and when the shutdowns took effect and the unemployment system crashed and he didnโ€™t have any income for two weeks, she called the governorโ€™s office. โ€œThey resolved it for him in 24 hours,โ€ she said. That impressed her. โ€œThatโ€™s competence,โ€ she said. โ€œEven though he was polling so low, I was going to vote my conscience and throw away my vote to DeSantis. Which is not like me. Iโ€™m a strategy person. Iโ€™m not stupid. But I was going to do that.โ€

Then DeSantis dropped out, leaving her with only Nikki Haley and Trump as options.

She hated Haley โ€” whose adolescent girlboss posture struck her as both anti-feminist and too reminiscent of Hillary Clinton for comfort โ€” more than she disapproved of the former president. (Incidentally, she found herself bartending at Haleyโ€™s Primary Night party. Haley โ€œdidnโ€™t mingle,โ€ she noted, and the evening was over much earlier than those working the event would have liked.) โ€œI wasnโ€™t happy, but it was like, This is what youโ€™re going to do,โ€ Olson said. She spoke in a deep, commanding voice and pounded on her chest for effect. She was going to suck it up. She was going to vote for Donald Trump.

 

At campaign events leading up to New Hampshireโ€™s Primary Day, Trump and his campaign surrogates promised the new administration would prioritize historical revision and revenge. At the Saddle Up Saloon in Kingston, a woman cried out, โ€œWhen are we gonna learn the truth about January 6th?โ€ J.โ€‰D. Vance, wearing a bright-red MAGA hat, said that investigating โ€œthe truthโ€ about the insurrection would be โ€œone of the most important thingsโ€ on Trumpโ€™s agenda once he was back in power. In Hollis on Monday afternoon, Donald Trump Jr. told me the indictments had backfired on Democrats by motivating people who were once โ€œpolitically agnosticโ€ to support his father in defiance of the โ€œextreme natureโ€ of the โ€œdeep state.โ€ โ€œThey get it,โ€ he said. โ€œThey realize theyโ€™ve been duped and lied to for far too long, so I do think itโ€™s helpful.โ€

Fortified by the snow, by the subzero temperatures, by the dawn of the New Year, with his improbably bronze visage and long black overcoat, Trump emerges, resurrected, not as the great hope of the Republican Party, because what even is the Republican Party now and who even cares about the Republican Party now, but as the great hope of a movement that is branded, as he prefers, with the Trump name.

As he declared victory, Trump divided his attention between the horse race, where he galloped past his rivals with glee, and his political persecution. He left New Hampshire for a court date in New York before returning on January 23, winning by 12 points. In Iowa, the result came down in his favor 30 minutes after the polls closed. In New Hampshire, the election was called as soon as the polls closed. He devoted the entirety of his speech to bitching about Haley, who, unlike Chris Christie, Doug Burgum, DeSantis, and Tim Scott, has so far refused to drop out and clear the path for his nomination.

โ€œI find in life, you canโ€™t let people get away with bullshit,โ€ Trump said. โ€œI donโ€™t get too angry. I get even.โ€

 

You are at risk of developing the impression, standing in the forest of TV cameras and boom mics that sprout at the back of these kinds of gatherings, that this is what itโ€™s all about. That the fans who arrive in team regalia, studded with rhinestones, speckled with sequins, cloaked in bastardized, Trumpified American flags, nervy and rude in the model of their savior, represent the electorate. But most of the Trump voters I spoke to in New Hampshire were more like Olson โ€” ambivalent and disappointed with their options (โ€œpolitically agnosticโ€ to borrow Trump Jr.โ€™s term). In general, these were not people inclined to spend a weekday afternoon listening to a suspiciously energetic Matt Gaetz ramble on about the โ€œdeep state.โ€ Like most Americans, they were not obsessed with the candidate they voted for.

 

If the projections for a general election less than 300 days away are to be believed, the result could depend on voters, like Olson, who are inclined to offer Trump redemption. In most head-to-head polls, Trump beats Biden by between one and eight percentage points. In polls that factor in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other third-party candidates, Trump is ahead by something like ten points. The willingness of people like Olson to give Trump a second chance, then, is more bad news for Democrats, who will need to find a way to attract voters outside their base (if not Olson, people vaguely like her) if they want to secure a second term for the president.

 

I first met Olson in February 2020 when I happened to park my rented Jeep next to her Volkswagen a few blocks from the state capitol on Main Street in Concord. At the time, she worked for the New Hampshire Liquor Commission as the supervisor in the accounts-payable department, about a 30-minute commute from her home in rural Bristol, and in her spare time, she volunteered for President Trumpโ€™s reelection effort. The back window of her car was covered by a big TRUMP-PENCE sign, which is how we got to talking. When I returned to the state in September, she invited me over, and for several hours at her kitchen counter, where she showed me the semiautomatic rifle she keeps in a drawer, she explained how a former precinct captain for Teddy Kennedyโ€™s 1980 presidential campaign became the kind of woman who bulldozed through a crowd of protesters outside a MAGA rally with both middle fingers raised in the air.

The daughter of a butcher and a secretary in Massachusetts, Olson was once happy to swing across the party divide based on her independent assessment of individual candidates. She supported Bill Clinton. She had โ€œa soft spotโ€ for George W. Bush. She didnโ€™t vote for Barack Obama, but she respected him because he was the president and she was an American and respecting your president was just the patriotic thing to do. But she hated political correctness, which she first felt creeping into her life in the 1980s, when she worked in social services and all of a sudden the word retarded was considered a slur rather than a medical designation. โ€œI started to figure out that liberal thinking was about changing the names for things but not really changing things,โ€ she said.

 

More and more, she worried about illegal immigration. She was not xenophobic, she said, and she was not against helping people in need. She cooked dinner for a homeless man at her house and then sat with him all night while he had a schizophrenic break, convinced he was being followed. She was tough and adventurous. She rode four-wheelers over sand dunes. She traveled the world. She liked to meet people from different cultures. She bartends, so she maintains a certain conversational agility, ready and able to talk to anybody about anything. She is a mother and a grandmother. Putting people with covid on ventilators caused their deaths.

That was one of the very first observations made by doctors at the start of covid.

I donโ€™t remember the exact explanation for why vents killed covid people with breathing problems, but there is a doctor on video explaining it all. It had more to do with how covid changed the mechanics of the lungs and putting more O2 in would not help, but hurt
