Anon suspects the Cahokia mounds in Illinois were made for a similar purpose. The Indians living there when De Soto got to North America probably had nothing to do with their construction.

it's standard operating procedure for either the pilot or co-pilot to walk around the plane and look for obvious structural problems… but they absolutely do miss stuff.
especially tough task for night flights, where they have to inspect with flashlights.
