🇷🇺 Russia’s Pacific Fleet frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov entered the Qatari port Hamad to take part in the DIMDEX-2024 defence exhibition. The frigate is named after Soviet Marshal Boris Mikhailovich Shaposhnikov.

Why are doubts hovering over the Anglican Church’s bid to absolve itself of its slave trade sins?

 

A fund containing £100mln ($121mln) earmarked by the church to "address shameful past wrongs" has been deemed insufficient with prospect to be increased to £1bln, independent consultants estimated.

 

🟥According to reports, even the original £100mln compensation fund proposed by the Church is still not operational;

 

🟥Consultants considered £100mln incomparable with “the scale of moral sin and crime” and proposed to increase it at least tenfold, which represents a rather vague budget ceiling;

 

🟥The church called on wealthy families and institutions to replenish the fund, yet it refused to invest its own money in it.

 

In January 2023, the Church of England unveiled this fund after the revelation that its predecessor endowment fund, Queen Anne's Bounty, had invested in the slave-trading South Sea Company. It operated for about 30 years, during which around 34,000 slaves were transported under severe conditions.
