SpaceX is keeping its rapid launch cadence going.

The company launched yet another batch of 23 Starlink internet satellites at 6:56 p.m. ET (2356 GMT) on Monday (March 4) from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Some eight minutes after liftoff, the flight's booster returned to the planet, landing on SpaceX's droneship dubbed "A Shortfall of Gravitas." The ship was waiting offshore in the Atlantic Ocean.

With the mission lifting off on time, and SpaceX having launched the Transporter-10 rideshare mission at 5:05 p.m. ET on Monday, three Falcon 9 rocket launches happened in a span of less than 24 hours. The third owes itself to the company's successful Crew-8 astronaut mission launch to the International Space Station on Sunday (March 3).

Monday's Starlink mission marked the 13th flight for this particular Falcon 9 first stage booster. The booster previously flew on eight other Starlink missions, the CRS-27 resupply mission to the ISS and a number of private launches including ispace's Hakuto-R lunar lander mission.

The mission was SpaceX's 21st Falcon 9 flight of 2024. It also marked 281 successful Falcon 9 booster landings.

SpaceX has been launching Starlink satellites with increasing regularity; before this mission, its most recent launch was on Feb. 29, Leap Day, when another 23 Starlink satellites made their way to space from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The company is building a massive megaconstellation of Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit to provide wireless, high-speed internet access across the world, for both general consumer usage as well as for use in war zones or disaster areas.

The company currently has over 5,000 working Starlink satellites in orbit and has approval to launch up to 12,000.

Fani Willis Case Upended by Prosecutor Testimony

A Georgia prosecutor has offered to testify that another witnesses' testimony was wrong about Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' relationship with prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Willis is leading the case against former President Donald Trump, who has been charged with 2020 election interference in Georgia.

In a Monday court filing, Cindi Lee Yeager, a co-chief deputy district attorney for Cobb County, Georgia, said Terrence Bradley, Wade's former divorce lawyer, told her Willis and Wade's relationship began earlier than they stated, Newsweek reported.

Bradley last month said under oath he did not know or could not remember when Willis and Wade's relationship began.

The filing said Yeager claimed on Friday that Bradley had told her that Wade and Willis met and started their romantic relationship in 2019, and Willis had told Bradley to keep it quiet.

"In or around September of 2023, Mr. Bradley was visiting Ms. Yeager in her office when Mr. Bradly received a telephone call," according to the filing by David Shafer, a Trump co-defendant. "Ms. Yeager could hear that the caller was District Attorney Willis. District Attorney Willis was calling Mr. Bradley in response to an article that was published about how much money Mr. Wade and his law partners had been paid in this case.

"Ms. Yeager heard District Attorney Willis tell Mr. Bradley: 'They are coming after us. You don't need to talk to them about anything about us.'"

The filing added that Yeager "watched Mr. Bradley's testimony before the Court and became concerned as a result of the fact that what Mr. Bradley testified to on the witness stand was directly contrary to what Mr. Bradley had told Ms. Yeager in person," Newsweek reported.

Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee indicated Friday that he would rule within the next two weeks on whether to remove Willis from the Trump case over a romantic relationship with a top prosecutor, Wade.

McAfee heard arguments over whether Willis' relationship with Wade amounts to a conflict of interest that should force them off one of four criminal cases against the former president.

A two-day hearing last month followed accusations by former Trump staffer and co-defendant Michael Roman that Willis was having an affair with Wade, whom the DA hired in the high-profile case. It also was alleged the two had benefited financially from taxpayers' money.

Attorneys for Trump and his co-defendants accused Willis and Wade of lying on the witness stand about when their relationship began, and told McAfee that keeping the district attorney on the case threatens to undermine the public's confidence in the hugely consequential prosecution.

Willis and Wade have admitted they had a relationship but denied a conflict of interest.

BlackSky wins defense contract to supply satellite data to train AI models

March 4, 2024

BlackSky, a supplier of satellite imagery and space-based intelligence, won a $2 million U.S. defense contract to provide data to train AI models.

The contract was awarded by the defense contractor Axient on behalf of the Air Force Research Laboratory. Axient in September 2023 won a contract from AFRL worth up to $25 million for space experiments.

Axient will use BlackSky’s satellite imagery and data analytics platform to support studies and technology demonstrations focused on tracking moving objects from space.

Specifically, these studies will “collect and annotate thousands of BlackSky multi-frame burst images to train moving target artificial intelligence models for commercial motion imagery,” BlackSky said March 4 in a news release.

Multi-frame burst images taken by satellites refer to sequences of consecutive video frames captured by satellites within a short timeframe, typically seconds. Using this data, the AFRL experiments will seek to identify moving objects from space more accurately and recognize patterns of life.

“This foundational work is expected to help decrease the time to develop moving target algorithms for other related customer-led initiatives,” said Patrick O’Neil, BlackSky chief technology officer.

Burst imagery used for movement detection

Multi-frame burst images are collected in rapid succession during a single satellite pass over an area of interest. “With multiple view angles captured within a matter of seconds, burst imagery can be used to generate 3D volumetric products and very accurate movement-oriented detection analytics,” the company said.

The contract includes access to BlackSky’s Spectra satellite-tasking and analytics platform.

AFRL, located at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, awarded Axient, based in Huntsville, Alabama, a $25 million task order in September 2023 for “integrated space experiments” to be performed over the next three years. Axient awarded BlackSky a $2 million task order in November 2023.

Victoria Nuland Leaving Post While Ukraine On The Ropes, US Policy In Shambles

Ukraine forces are in retreat and the war is going badly from NATO's perspective, Biden's $60+ billion for Kiev is halted in the House, and the Democratic incumbent's reelection chances are looking grim in November. And as if confirming there's no light at the end of the tunnel, Victoria Nuland is stepping down as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the United States.

The State Department announced Tuesday morning she is retiring. The Associated Press announcement interestingly enough underscores her hawkish legacy on Russia and Ukraine. "Victoria Nuland, the third-highest ranking U.S. diplomat and frequent target of criticism for her hawkish views on Russia and its actions in Ukraine, will leave her post this month, the State Department said Tuesday," it wrote.

Her boss Antony Blinken said something a bit ironic on the occasion of unveiling her departure: "But it’s Toria’s leadership on Ukraine that diplomats and students of foreign policy will study for years to come."

Indeed, many already know her as Victoria-'Fuck the EU'-Nuland and for essentially running foreign policy in Europe, stretching back through the Obama years as then Assistant Secretary of State for Europe, where many of the problems which sparked the disastrous and tragic Russia-Ukraine war were first set in motion.

According to more praise from Secretary Blinken:

"Her efforts have been indispensable to confronting Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, marshaling a global coalition to ensure his strategic failure, and helping Ukraine work toward the day when it will be able to stand strongly on its own feet – democratically, economically, and militarily."

Of course, Blinken's boldly declaring Russia's "strategic failure" seems a bit forced and premature (to put it mildly), considering too that even from a propaganda angle leading NATO countries are currently very much on the defensive. Things simply aren't going well in NATO-land, by many accounts.

Even The Guardian is now singing a very different tune, listing off serious policy failures and disasters for the West:

Western Europe has no conceivable interest in escalating the Ukraine war through a long-range missile exchange. While it should sustain its logistical support for Ukrainian forces, it has no strategic interest in Kyiv’s desire to drive Russia out of the majority Russian-speaking areas of Crimea or Donbas. It has every interest in assiduously seeking an early settlement and starting the rebuilding of Ukraine.

As for the west’s “soft power” sanctions on Russia, they have failed miserably, disrupting the global trading economy in the process. Sanctions may be beloved of western diplomats and thinktanks. They may even hurt someone – not least Britain’s energy users – but they have not devastated the Russian economy or changed Putin’s mind. This year Russia’s growth rate is expected to exceed Britain’s.

Terran Orbital wins $15 million contract for U.S. Space Force satellite experiments

Terran Orbital, a manufacturer of small satellites, announced March 5 it won a $15 million contract for hardware and integration services in support of U.S. Space Force experiments.

The contract was awarded by the defense contractor Axient Corp. on behalf of the Air Force Research Laboratory. Axient in September 2023 won a contract from AFRL to manage small-satellite military experiments.

Terran Orbital got a task order from Axient to supply two of the company’s Ambassador-class satellite platforms and support equipment, and to integrate payloads for upcoming U.S. Space Force missions.

The satellites will be integrated with a platform known as ESPA Grande, a payload adapter designed to facilitate rideshare missions by providing additional payload capacity on national security launch vehicles.

ESPA Grande buses are often used for small national security payloads. Terran Orbital’s Ambassador spacecraft is the largest allowed by the ESPA Grande interface for rideshare missions.

Delivery within 12 months

Terran Orbital’s chief executive Marc Bell said the Ambassador platforms for this contract, to be delivered within 12 months, are similar to those provided for the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer satellites produced by Lockheed Martin.

AFRL, located at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, awarded Axient, based in Huntsville, Alabama, a $25 million task order in September 2023 for “integrated space experiments” to be performed over the next three years. Axient awarded Terran Orbital the $15 million task order in December 2023.

A Freedom of Information Act lawsuit has revealed that the Biden administration has flown at least 320,000 migrants into the United States in an effort to reduce the number of crossings at the southern border, according to Todd Bensman of the Center for Immigration Studies.

"The program at the center of the FOIA litigation is perhaps the most enigmatic and least-known of the Biden administration’s uses of the CBP One cellphone scheduling app, even though it is responsible for almost invisibly importing by air 320,000 aliens with no legal right to enter the United States since it got underway in late 2022," wrote Bensman.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had initially refused to disclose information about the flights, which use a cell phone app, CBP One, to arrange.

"Under these legally dubious parole programs, aliens who cannot legally enter the country use the CBP One app to apply for travel authorization and temporary humanitarian release from those airports. The parole program allows for two-year periods of legal status during which adults are eligible for work authorization," Bensman continues.

The flights resulted in illegal immigrants being placed in at least 43 American cities from January through December 2023.

Under the terms of their release, migrants are able to remain in the US for two years without obtaining legal status, and are meanwhile eligible for work authorization.

The Biden administration initially refused to disclose which airports undocumented aliens were being flown into, citing a 'law enforcement exception,' new information reveals that the government thought 'bad actors' might pose a safety risk or create law enforcement opportunities - with CBP lawyers writing that revealing the specific airports would "reveal information about the relative number of individuals arriving, and thus resources expended at particular airports."

According to the Hungarian leader, “there is only one solution: peace negotiations must begin sooner or later,” and involve the US in some capacity. Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, went down for thousands of users on Tuesday.

As many as 500,000 Facebook users had reported issues logging in or accessing the site as of mid-morning Eastern Time on Tuesday, according to outage tracker Downdetector. Around 50,000 outage reports had been issued regarding Instagram and another 10,000 for Facebook Messenger, although the number of reports had already begun to fall within an hour after they began.

Some users found they had been logged out of their Facebook accounts. Others got notifications on Instagram that “something went wrong” and their feeds could not be loaded.

Threads, Meta’s competitor to Elon Musk’s X, also went down and showed users a popup that said “Something went wrong, please try again later” in place of their feed.

At the news conference Tuesday, Bugti claimed that Afghan nationals carried out 14 of the 24 major terrorist attacks that have taken place in Pakistan this year.

“There are attacks on us from Afghanistan and Afghan nationals are involved in those attacks. We have evidence present for that,” he added.

The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday issued arrest warrants for Lieutenant-General Sergey Kobylash and Admiral Viktor Sokolov, accusing the two top Russian military commanders of committing war crimes amid the Ukrainian conflict.

The two top officers, serving as the commanders of Russia’s Long-Range Aviation and Black Sea Fleet respectively, are accused of committing “the war crime of directing attacks at civilian objects,” causing “excessive incidental harm to civilians,” as well as perpetrating a “crime against humanity,” the ICC said in a press release.

The Deputy Secretary will leave the US State Department in several weeks, Antony Blinken has announced

US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland is poised to leave her post in the coming weeks, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced. The senior official, widely regarded as a foreign policy hawk, played a key role in the Western-backed coup in Ukraine in 2014.

In December 2013, she visited Kiev with the late Senator John McCain to hand out pastries to armed protesters in the city's central square. Days before the February coup, as orchestrated mass murder gripped the city, she was recorded discussing how to “midwife this thing” with then-US ambassador to Kiev, Geoffrey Pyatt, reportedly exclaiming “F**k the EU” when it came to a choice of new leader in the war-torn country.

Nuland resigned from the State Department during the Trump administration, taking the helm of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) think-tank before joining the Albright Stonebridge Group and the board of the neo-liberal National Endowment for Democracy (NED). She rejoined the government after President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

She has worked on arming Ukraine and assembling a Western coalition that would supply Kiev with weapons and ammunition for the conflict with Russia. Last month, she pleaded to Congress to approve $61 billion in funding to Ukraine, arguing that most of it would be “going right back into the US economy,” to create jobs in the weapons industry.

Her most recent trip to Kiev involved intervening with President Vladimir Zelensky on behalf of General Valery Zaluzhny, though to no avail. Zaluzhny was subsequently fired.

In a CNN interview at the end of February, Nuland admitted the defeat of US efforts towards Moscow, acknowledging that the target of her policy is “not the Russia that, frankly, we wanted.”

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova attributed Nuland’s exit to “the failure of the anti-Russian course of the Biden administration.”

“Russophobia, proposed by Victoria Nuland as the main foreign policy concept of the United States, is dragging the Democrats to the bottom like a stone,” Zakharova said. Posting a photo of Nuland taken at an Orthodox church at some point, she said that if the US politician wanted to “go to a monastery to atone for your sins, we can put in a good word.”

Nuland is married to neoconservative stalwart Robert Kagan, a co-founder of the Project for the New American Century. Her sister-in-law Kimberley Kagan, married to Robert’s brother Fred, runs the Institute for the Study of War. Her temporary replacement at the State Department will be Under Secretary for Management John Bass.

In a statement on Tuesday, Blinken noted that his friend “Toria” has held most of the jobs at the State Department, from a consular officer to ambassador and deputy secretary, over her 35-year career. Her most recent posting was as undersecretary for political affairs. She was also Blinken’s acting deputy after the July 2023 retirement of Wendy Sherman, until Kurt Campbell was confirmed to the post last month.

“What makes Toria truly exceptional is the fierce passion she brings to fighting for what she believes in most: freedom, democracy, human rights, and America’s enduring capacity to inspire and promote those values around the world,” Blinken said.

He also noted that her “leadership on Ukraine” will be the subject of study “for years to come” by diplomats and students of foreign policy.
