Euro-Med Monitor reported that the Israeli military fatally struck a Palestinian man in Gaza City's Al-Zaytoun area on 29 February, following his detention. After undergoing severe questioning, the man was restrained with plastic zip-tie handcuffs. He was subsequently run over by a military vehicle, which was deliberately driven over him from his feet to his head.

According to eyewitness accounts provided to the Euro-Med team, the incident took place on Salah al-Din Street in the Zaytoun district. Witnesses reported that Israeli soldiers handcuffed the victim's hands and then proceeded to run him over, indicating he was alive before being crushed by the weight of the vehicle.

The rights organization has also reported that the Israeli military has been involved in other incidents of a similar nature.

On 23 January, an Israeli tank trampled over members of the Palestinian Ghannam family as they slept in a caravan at the Taiba Towers area of Khan Younis. The father and the eldest daughter of the family were killed during the attack, according to Amina, the youngest sister.

Euro-Med also reported instances of Israeli tanks and bulldozers driving over and flattening tents housing displaced individuals within the courtyard of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia on 16 December 2023.

Anas al-Sharif, Al Jazeera's Arabic correspondent in Gaza, described the attack as “a terrifying massacre with unspeakable scenes. What the Israeli occupation did inside Kamal Adwan Hospital is a horrific crime against citizens and medical staff."

Several of these run-over executions come after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel is “plausible” for committing genocide on 26 January, urging Tel Aviv to prevent further casualties and to completely restrain from committing acts that constitute genocide.

Since the ICJ's demands, the Israeli military had additionally killed over 3,847 Palestinians in Gaza as of the end of February.

Since 7 October, Israeli forces have killed over 30,000 civilians, more than half of whom were women and children. Additionally, around 80 percent of Gaza's population has been forcibly displaced by the destruction inflicted by Israel's frequent aerial assaults.

Hezbollah security personnel arrested six Dutch nationals in the southern suburbs of Beirut last Wednesday

The men were found in possession of military-grade weapons, ammunition, and equipment.

The Dutch government claimed the six men were part of a special group sent to evacuate its nationals if the war between Hezbollah and Israel expanded.

Hezbollah handed over the men to the Lebanese Intelligence Directorate, where they were interrogated and kept in detention until early Friday morning.

Sources speaking with Al-Akhbar said the six men claimed to be members of the Dutch military, simulating an evacuation attempt from inside the southern suburb. Contact with them was lost after they entered the southern suburb and were stopped by Hezbollah security personnel. Two employees of the Dutch embassy residing in the southern suburb allegedly participated in the failed simulation.

However, journalist Hasan Illaik of the Lebanese news outlet Al-Mahatta reported that the embassy employees were not Dutch nationals and that the "Dutch ambassador to Lebanon quickly arrived at the ministry to pressure their release, under the pretext that they had not committed any crime. This is, of course, untrue given that this is a major violation of the law and that it was a significant security threat.”

Illaik added that, “even more suspiciously, the armed group claimed to have carried out the operation without consulting their own embassy. It was also discovered that they launched their operation from Kaslik,” a coastal town north of Beirut, "rather than from the embassy or a place affiliated with the embassy."

Neither the Lebanese military nor the Dutch government provided an official statement or explanation for the incident.

Al-Akhbar reported as well on 2 March that Hezbollah’s security service arrested a Spanish national in the Al-Kafaat area in the southern Beirut suburbs several days ago. The man was filming with his phone on the street, claiming he was lost and needed to send his location to friends to pick him up.

However, during the interrogation, it was discovered that his phone contained an advanced program preventing access to the stored data.

High-level officials from the Spanish embassy then intervened to win his release. It was later discovered that the man possessed a diplomatic passport.

The arrests of the Dutch and Spanish nationals came as part of a program of additional measures initiated by Hezbollah security officials in response to increased efforts by Israeli and other foreign intelligence agencies to collect information needed to assassinate Hezbollah cadres.

Israel assassinated prominent Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri in an airstrike in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiya in December and prominent Hezbollah commander Ali Hussein Burji in January in south Lebanon.

Since the outbreak of the war with Israel on 8 October, the embassies of several western countries, including Britain and Canada, have brought in special forces, ammunition, and advanced equipment under the pretext of evacuating their diplomats and nationals if the situation deteriorates.

Al-Akhbar reported in November that mysterious foreign military cargo flights, potentially carrying equipment for use against Hezbollah, were landing at the Beirut and Hamat airports.

Between the 14 and 20 November, nine planes from various NATO countries were recorded landing at Beirut and Hamat airports, including several flying from Tel Aviv, according to Intelsky, a website monitoring aircraft movement in the region.

Israel has recalled its ambassador to the UN after Secretary General Antonio Guterres declined to convene a Security Council hearing on allegations of rapes committed during the Hamas attacks of October 7, despite a report finding there were “reasonable grounds” to believe West Jerusalem’s claims.

 

Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced on Monday that he was bringing back Ambassador Gilad Erdan for “immediate consultations regarding the attempt to keep quiet the serious UN report on the mass rapes committed by Hamas and its helpers on October 7.” He rebuked Guterres for failing to take up the report in the Security Council and declare Hamas a terrorist organization.

 

Katz issued his statement after the UN’s envoy focusing on sexual violence suggested in a report that allegations of sexual assaults of Israelis by Hamas militants were plausible. There are “reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing,” said the envoy, Pramila Patten, who took a nine-person team to Israel and the West Bank from January 28 to February 14.

 

Patten’s report, released on Monday, said the UN team found “clear and convincing information” that some of the women and children whom Hamas took back to the Gaza Strip as hostages following the October 7 attacks have been subjected to rape and “sexualized torture.” The surprise Hamas raids against southern Israeli villages left more than 1,100 people dead and triggered a war in which more than 30,000 Gazans have reportedly been killed.

 

Hamas has denied allegations of sexual violence. Patten said her team was unable to meet with any of the alleged rape victims, but the UN group gathered information from Israeli institutions, witnesses of the attacks and released hostages. Based on that information, she said, it’s “reasonable” to believe that gang rapes and other acts of sexual violence occurred in at least three separate locations on October 7.

 

For instance, the bodies of naked or partially naked bodies from the waist down were recovered with hands tied and multiple gunshot wounds. In some cases, the bodies – mostly women – were tied to trees or poles. The UN team also verified the rape of a woman outside a bomb shelter. Witnesses reported rapes of female corpses, as well as rapes of two women by Hamas militants on a road leading from a music festival that was attacked. Several bodies were found on the road with “genital injuries, along with injuries to other body parts,” the report said.

 

However, Patten added that at least two widely reported allegations of sexual violence were determined to be unfounded. UN spokeswoman Stephane Dujarric argued that Guterres supported Patten’s work and denied that he had done anything to “keep quiet” the envoy’s report.

 

Erdan, the recalled ambassador, said it took the UN five months to “finally recognize” the sexual atrocities committed by Hamas. He added that with Monday’s report confirming the ongoing sexual abuse of Israeli hostages, “the shameful silence by the UN that is not holding even one discussion on the issue screams to the heavens.”

Why it matters: The sprawling efforts to hold Trump accountable for Jan. 6 — including through impeachment, criminal prosecution and the 14th Amendment's insurrection clause — appear unlikely to ripen before November.

 

Many Democrats are coming to grips with the idea that Trump can only be defeated at the ballot box.

 

But after a weekend that wrought yet another round of devastating polling for President Biden, that task is more daunting than ever.

 

State of play: The Supreme Court unanimously ruled Monday that individual states cannot bar candidates for federal office from their ballots, allowing Trump to remain on the ballot in Colorado and squashing similar disqualification efforts in Illinois and Maine.

 

Last week, the court agreed to hear Trump's claim of presidential immunity from prosecution — handing him a huge win by indefinitely placing his federal election interference trial on hold.

 

That trial was originally scheduled to begin on Monday; if Trump wins in November and hasn't been tried before Inauguration Day, there's a good chance he never will be.

 

Elsewhere across the legal landscape, Trump's delay tactics have found remarkable success. In the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, Judge Aileen Cannon indicated Friday that Trump's federal trial in Florida won't begin in May as previously scheduled. In the Georgia election interference case, a decision is pending on whether District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified over her romantic relationship with a prosecutor she hired. The other side: Trump's hush money trial in Manhattan is still on track to begin on March 25, though it's widely viewed as the least serious of his four criminal cases.

 

Recent polling suggests a conviction would transform the race: 53% of voters in seven battleground states said they would be unwilling to vote for Trump if he's found guilty of a felony.

 

The intrigue: Despite Trump's stretch of good fortune and polls, Biden remains optimistic that his message about democracy — which helped staunch a "red wave" in the 2022 midterms — will again prevail. Explaining his theory of the case, top Biden adviser Mike Donilon said in a rare interview with the New Yorker that "the focus will become overwhelming on democracy" by November. "I think the biggest images in people's minds are going to be of January 6th," Donilon predicted.

Former Cranbrook student says he was sexually abused at private Sydney boys' school

 

Moving from the other side of Australia to Cranbrook — a prestigious boys' school in the country's wealthiest suburb — should have been the opportunity of a lifetime for Travis Mathews.

 

He was 13, his mother had died, and he had been a ward of the state of Western Australia since he was a baby.

 

The state was paying for Travis's tuition at Cranbrook, in Bellevue Hill on Sydney Harbour, because his older sister was working at a nearby naval base. The school was where the country's billionaires sent their sons.

 

But within a short time of his arrival to year 8 in 2013, Travis's life at Cranbrook took a terrible turn.

Adrian Barakat is Travis's lawyer.

 

"This was an opportunity for Travis to come to Sydney, to go to a private school where the opportunities from there were infinite," Mr Barakat said.

 

"Instead, it became his nightmare."

 

Travis, now 23, says he was too afraid to tell anyone about that nightmare.

 

He knows now that as a 13-year-old he could not have consented to sex. And this is the first time he's speaking publicly about what happened.

 

Travis says his ordeal continued for some months, until in the spring of 2013 the older student videoed him without his knowledge.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Several people have died after a small plane crashed near the shoulder of Interstate 40 in Nashville, Tennessee, according to authorities. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said multiple people witnessed the single-engine plane crash off the eastbound lanes of the interstate at about 7:45 p.m. Monday.

 

Kendra Loney, a public information officer for the Nashville Fire Department, said at a press briefing that the plane imploded on impact. “That impact was catastrophic, and it did not leave any survivors,” Loney said. Authorities did not specify how many people died, as crews continue to examine the wreckage.

 

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) said all eastbound lanes of I-40 were shut down following the crash. Police said the plane didn’t hit any vehicles or buildings.

 

Nashville International Airport (BNA) issued the following statement to Nexstar’s WKRN: “This evening, at approximately 7:49 p.m., the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) was alerted of a single-engine aircraft crash three miles south of John C. Tune Airport® (JWN®), near I-40 at mile marker 203. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate this aircraft accident after Metro first responders ensure the accident scene is safe. Please contact Metro emergency personnel for additional details.”

Zoom and Snap are among companies that have cut (DEI) roles in recent weeks.

 

After George Floyd’s murder in 2020, companies made big pledges about racial equity, hiring teams dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion. Now corporate America is pulling back — cutting DEI jobs and outsourcing the work to consultants.

DEI jobs peaked in early 2023 before falling 5 percent that year and shrinking by 8 percent so far in 2024, according to Revelio Labs data shared with The Washington Post. The attrition rate for DEI roles has been about double that of non-DEI jobs, says Revelio, which tracks workforce dynamics.

 

In recent weeks, Zoom axed its internal DEI team amid broader layoffs, and Snap cut workers who worked on retention and engagement efforts for employees from underrepresented groups. Meta, Tesla, DoorDash, Lyft, Home Depot, Wayfair and X were among major corporations making steep cuts in 2023, slashing the size of their DEI teams by 50 percent or more, Revelio’s data shows.

 

“The overall number of DEI officers has decreased,” said Lisa Simon, Revelio’s senior economist, “but it’s not enough to destroy all the strides that happened after 2020.”

At Zoom, chief operating officer Aparna Bawa told employees that the company would replace its internal DEI team with DEI consultants who would “champion inclusion by embedding our values … directly into our people programs rather than as a separate initiative,” according to a Jan. 29 memo seen by The Post.

 

Colleen Rodriguez, the company’s head of global corporate communications, said Zoom “remains committed” to DEI work.

Snap made a similar decision in February, according to reporting from Business Insider. Snap did not respond to a request for comment.

 

Corporate America’s retreat from DEI has coincided with increased legal risk and political animosity toward systemic efforts to boost racial equity. State legislators have introduced at least 65 anti-DEI bills since 2023, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. The resignation of Claudine Gay, Harvard University’s first Black president, amid plagiarism allegations in January was billed as “the beginning of the end for DEI in America’s institutions” by the conservative activist who led the campaign to oust her. Mentions of DEI on corporate earnings calls have plunged in the past year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

For companies that were never really committed, “this is the perfect air cover for backing off diversity,” said Joelle Emerson, CEO of DEI consultancy Paradigm.

Not all companies downsizing teams are giving up on the work, Emerson said, noting that some employers overhired when they established their DEI teams.

 

“I don’t know that it ever made sense to have a 25-person diversity team sitting to the side of a core business function,” Emerson said. “Companies should be able to say, ‘We’ve tried this, it didn’t have an impact, we’re going to try something different.’”
