>we just need be good to eachother thats all

This is the de-Christianized version of "just be a nice Church lady" Christianity.

By far the best non-Christian/pre-Christian articulation of morality in Western culture is Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.

There ain't no "just" anything.

Aiming at human excellence leads us on a hard road with many twists and turns.

>most of the bibles teachings seem to come out of Hellenistic Greece.

Yes, this is true, even if some very sensitive "Christians" vociferously deny this.

It seems the big difference is that the New Testament overtly seeks to make this available to EVERYONE… but you have to do the work even if you are not up for reading Aristotle.

>I need to get some Aristotle

Supposedly Winston Churchill read the Nicomachean Ethics and said basically "Yeah, this is pretty much what I already figured out via life…" (my paraphrase)

And that is pretty impressive if Winston is pretty much the based "our finest hour" guy…

He likely read some oldskool translation like WD Ross which isn't that bad.

But personally I like the Joe Sachs translation which is intentionally very "down to earth" while still maintaining fidelity.

There are now many translations of MA's Meditations for "the normal man" but I think Sachs gives us that for the Nic Ethics.

My $0.02.
