Had to walk halfway across TX anon's self back in the day because, as one deputy told anon, "people 'round here don't like to pick up hitchhikers, because sometimes they get accused of murder."
I was a teenager, very naive, and so failed to read in between the lines of that veiled threat until years later.
It's a beautiful country, aini't it? It was better when each region still had its traditions and personality.
