i'm not going to say that true unemployment ISN'T at a record low, but maybe i was an economist in a past life, and i WILL tell you that unemployment as a number is almost entirely made-up. it's one of the more malleable figures in the basket.

unemployment rate = unemployed people / total employable people
unemployed people = people who "can" work, and "are looking for work" who have been out of work for some set period of time.
it's an arbitrary number - how do you define "are looking for work" and how do you define that set period?
there isn't a good standard measurement for it.
and then, once you've mangled the top number, the bottom number is "total employable people". this is also easily manipulated.

that was the joke when i was in school. if you set the metric to…say…six months, then any trend which appears over any six month period is suspicious.
