Little unknown fact about the Swiss Guard's uniforms.

 

Michaelangelo was RENOWNED for his artistry throughout Italy. The Vatican ordered him to come and paint the Sistine Chapel- at no charge, of course. (Vatican, back in the day, was known to not pay it's bills). Michaelangelo politely declined to work for Vatican. Vatican sent out people to look for him and bring him to kneel. He hid. Eventually they found him. He acquiessed and painted the ceiling. As a result of his outstanding work, the Vatican asked him to create the Guard's uniforms. Through his blinding rage of being forced to paint the ceiling for 4+ years, on his back, and forced to paint in an art-form-genre previously unknown to him , he happily agreed and produced the uniforms you see now. And he was not paid for the Sistine Chapel.
