there was a major NVIDIA driver bug in GDM and Wayland that hit last week.
had to run a different window manager and revert to X-Windows which took a bit of time to figure out.
that wasn't fun. Kind of ruined a Saturday.
the bug is still there, but the difference is that Linux lets you run different windowing managers and different desktops without much difficulty.
If I'd known what to do the problem would have just been a hickup.
I don't run Windows. I run Linux.
down load an ISO
burn it to a fob
boot from the fob
I recommend using a fresh harddrive.
leave you drives alone.
if you don't screw with the drives all the data will still be there.
It's really really easy.
you need to know how to go into the computer setup screen and enable boot from USB but I assume that's not an issue for you.
the other thing: ALWAYS keep your home/ area seperate from the root drive or you will have issues later on. (don't use just on giant partition)
so what that means is that you need to understand what various partitions you need.
you need a root partition
you need a boot partition
you need to install a boot loader
you need a home partition.
You might even want a bunch of home paritions and other various partitions to run servers.
the worst mistake you can make is to just use all of a giant harddrive to load home and root into one giant partition. It will not be easy to migrate later.
another important thing: always have a backup computer or too.
learn how to boot to runlevel 3 so you can fix issues if the windowing manager or the video driver don't work.
It's not too steep a learning curve, I've been doing it for over twenty years.
for a while I'd run wine to play tomb raider, but then I just stopped playing that and never went back to anything Windows ever again.
but old stuff from the 1990s will run in wine if I wanted to. (but I don't want to).
Windows is for rubes and corporations laundering money so that the microsoft stock they own will go higher.
Linux is free and easy.
Windows is broken by design and very expensive.
PS: some say that Windows is actually running Linux and virtualizing it.
